Abstract:Twenty years ago, Rota posed the problem of finding all possible algebraic identities that can be satisfied by a linear operator on an algebra, named Rota’s Classification Problem later. Rota’s Classification Problem has proceeded two steps to understand it and has been studied actively recently. In particular, the method of Gröbner-Shirshov bases has been used successfully in the study of Rota’s Classification Problem. Quite recently, a new approach introduced to Rota’s Classification Problem and classified some (new) operated polynomial identities. In this paper, we prove that all operated polynomial identities classified via this new approach are Gröbner-Shirshov. This gives a partial answer of Rota’s Classification Problem.

Abstract:We study a question which can be roughly stated as follows: Given a (unital or nonunital) algebra $A$ together with a Gr\"obner-Shirshov basis $G$, consider the free operated algebra $B$ over $A$, such that the operator satisfies some polynomial identities $\Phi$ which are Gr\"obner-Shirshov in the sense of Guo et al., when doesthe union $\Phi\cup G$ will be an operated Gr\"obner-Shirshov basis for $B$? We answer this question in the affirmative under a mild condition in our previous work with Wang. When this condition is satisfied, $\Phi\cup G$ is an operated Gr\"obner-Shirshov basis for $ B$ and as a consequence, we also get a linear basis of $B$. However, the condition could not be applied directly to differential type algebras introduced by Guo, Sit and Zhang, including usual differential algebras. This paper solves completely this problem for differential type algebras.Some new monomial orders are introduced which, together with some known ones, permit the application of the previous result to most of differential type algebras, thus providing new operated GS bases and linear bases for these differential type algebras.Versions are presented both for unital and nonunital algebras. However, a class of examples are also presented, for which the natural expectation in the question is wrong and these examples are dealt with by direct inspection.

Abstract:This paper investigates algebraic objects equipped with an operator, such as operated monoids, operated algebras etc. Various free object functors in these operated contexts are explicitly constructed. For operated algebras whose operator satisfies a set Φ of relations (usually called operated polynomial identities (aka. OPIs)), Guo defined free objects, called free Φ-algebras, via universal algebra. Free Φ-algebras over algebras are studied in details. A mild sufficient condition is found such that Φ together with a Gröbner-Shirshov basis of an algebra A form a Gröbner-Shirshov basis of the free Φ-algebra over algebra A in the sense of Guo et al.. Ample examples for which this condition holds are provided, such as all Rota-Baxter type OPIs, a class of differential type OPIs, averaging OPIs and Reynolds OPI.

Abstract:In this paper we revisit Rota's Classification Problem on classifying algebraic identities for linear operator. We reformulate Rota's Classification Problem in the contexts of rewriting systems and Gröbner-Shirshov bases, through which Rota's Classification Problem amounts to the classification of operators, given by their defining operator identities, that give convergent rewriting systems or Gröbner-Shirshov bases. Relationship is established between the reformulations in terms of rewriting systems and that of Gröbner-Shirshov bases. We provide an effective condition that gives Gröbner-Shirshov operators and obtain a new class of Gröbner-Shirshov operators.

Abstract:We introduce a new approach to the classification of operator identities, based on basic concepts from the theory of algebraic operads together with computational commutative algebra applied to determinantal ideals of matrices over polynomial rings. We consider operator identities of degree 2 (the number of variables in each term) and multiplicity 1 or 2 (the number of operators in each term), but our methods apply more generally. Given an operator identity with indeterminate coefficients, we use partial compositions to construct a matrix of consequences, and then use computer algebra to determine the values of the indeterminates for which this matrix has submaximal rank. For multiplicity 1 we obtain six identities, including the derivation identity. For multiplicity 2 we obtain eighteen identities and two parametrized families, including the left and right averaging identities, the Rota-Baxter identity, the Nijenhuis identity, and some new identities which deserve further study.

Abstract:We give a criterion for a collection of polynomials to be a universal Gröbner basis for an ideal in terms of the multidegree of the closure of the corresponding affine variety in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$. This criterion can be used to give simple proofs of several existing results on universal Gröbner bases. We introduce fine Schubert polynomials, which record the multidegrees of the closures of matrix Schubert varieties in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{n^2}$. We compute the fine Schubert polynomials of permutations $w$ where the coefficients of the Schubert polynomials of $w$ and $w^{-1}$ are all either 0 or 1, and we use this to give a universal Gröbner basis for the ideal of the matrix Schubert variety of such a permutation.

Abstract:One of the natural ways to prove that the Hall words (Philip Hall, 1933) consist of a basis of a free Lie algebra is a direct construction: to start with a linear space spanned by Hall words, to define the Lie product of Hall words, and then to check that the product yields the Lie identities (Marshall Hall, 1950). Here we suggest another way using the Composition-Diamond lemma for free anti-commutative (non-associative) algebras (A.I. Shirshov, 1962).

Abstract:We establish a poset structure on combinatorial bases of multivariate polynomials defined by positive expansions, and study properties common to bases in this poset. Included are the well-studied bases of Schubert polynomials, Demazure characters and Demazure atoms; the quasi-key, fundamental and monomial slide bases introduced in 2017 by Assaf and the author; and a new basis we introduce completing this poset structure. We show the product of a Schur polynomial and an element of a basis in this poset expands positively in that basis; in particular, we give the first Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of a Schur polynomial and a quasi-key polynomial. This rule simultaneously extends Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg's (2011) Littlewood-Richardson rule for quasi-Schur polynomials and refines their Littlewood-Richardson rule for Demazure characters. We also establish bijections connecting combinatorial models for these polynomials including semi-skyline fillings and quasi-key tableaux.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the Lyndon-Shirshov words to Lyndon-Shirshov $\Omega$-words on a set $X$ and prove that the set of all non-associative Lyndon-Shirshov $\Omega$-words forms a linear basis of the free Lie $\Omega$-algebra on the set $X$. From this, we establish Gröbner-Shirshov bases theory for Lie $\Omega$-algebras. As applications, we give Gröbner-Shirshov bases for free $\lambda$-Rota-Baxter Lie algebras, free modified $\lambda$-Rota-Baxter Lie algebras and free Nijenhuis Lie algebras and then linear bases of such three free algebras are obtained.

Abstract:We define a new monoidal category on collections (shuffle composition). Monoids in this category (shuffle operads) turn out to bring a new insight in the theory of symmetric operads. For this category, we develop the machinery of Gröbner bases for operads, and present operadic versions of Bergman's Diamond Lemma and Buchberger's algorithm. This machinery can be applied to study symmetric operads. In particular, we obtain an effective algorithmic version of Hoffbeck's PBW criterion of Koszulness for (symmetric) quadratic operads.

Abstract:Signature-based algorithms have become a standard approach for computing Gröbner bases in commutative polynomial rings. However, so far, it was not clear how to extend this concept to the setting of noncommutative polynomials in the free algebra. In this paper, we present a signature-based algorithm for computing Gröbner bases in precisely this setting. The algorithm is an adaptation of Buchberger's algorithm including signatures. We prove that our algorithm correctly enumerates a signature Gröbner basis as well as a Gröbner basis of the module generated by the leading terms of the generators' syzygies, and that it terminates whenever the ideal admits a finite signature Gröbner basis. Additionally, we adapt well-known signature-based criteria eliminating redundant reductions, such as the syzygy criterion, the F5 criterion and the singular criterion, to the case of noncommutative polynomials. We also generalise reconstruction methods from the commutative setting that allow to recover, from partial information about signatures, the coordinates of elements of a Gröbner basis in terms of the input polynomials, as well as a basis of the syzygy module of the generators. We have written a toy implementation of all the algorithms in the Mathematica package OperatorGB and we compare our signature-based algorithm to the classical Buchberger algorithm for noncommutative polynomials.

Abstract:Let F be an infinite field of characteristic p≠2 , G be a group, and * be an involution of G extended linearly to an involution of the group algebra FG . In the literature, group identities on units U(FG) and on symmetric units U+(FG)={α∈U(FG)|α*=α} have been considered. Here, we investigate normalized Laurent polynomial identities (as a generalization of group identities) on U+(FG) under the conditions that either p > 2 or F is algebraically closed. For instance, we show that if G is torsion and U+(FG) satisfies a normalized Laurent polynomial identity, then U+(FG) satisfies a group identity and FG satisfies a polynomial identity.

Abstract:We construct two families of free resolutions that resolve the ideals of certain opposite Schubert varieties restricted to the big open cell. We conjecture that these examples have genericity properties translating to structure theorems for perfect ideals with given Betti numbers, extending the well-known theorem of Buchsbaum and Eisenbud on Gorenstein ideals of codimension three.

Abstract:In this paper, we elaborate Gröbner-Shirshov bases method for Leibniz (super)algebras. We show that there is a unique reduced Gröbner-Shirshov basis for every (graded) ideal of a free Leibniz (super)algebra. As applications, we construct linear bases of free metabelian Leibniz superalgebras and new linear bases of free metabelian Lie algebras. We present a complete characterization of extensions of a Leibniz (super)algebra by another Leibniz (super)algebra, where the former is presented by generators and relations.
