Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:We investigate two Stieltjes continued fractions given by the paperfolding sequence and the Rudin-Shapiro sequence. By explicitly describing certain subsequences of the convergents $P_n(x)/Q_n(x)$ modulo $4$, we give the formal power series expansions (modulo $4$) of these two continued fractions and prove that they are congruent modulo $4$ to algebraic series in $\mathbb{Z}[[x]]$. Therefore, the coefficient sequences of the formal power series expansions are $2$-automatic. Write $Q_{n}(x)=\sum_{i\ge 0}a_{n,i}x^{i}$. Then $(Q_{n}(x))_{n\ge 0}$ defines a two-dimensional coefficient sequence $(a_{n,i})_{n,i\ge 0}$. We prove that the coefficient sequences $(a_{n,i}\mod 4)_{n\ge 0}$ introduced by both $(Q_{n}(x))_{n\ge 0}$ and $(P_{n}(x))_{n\ge 0}$ are $2$-automatic for all $i\ge 0$. Moreover, the pictures of these two dimensional coefficient sequences modulo $4$ present a kind of self-similar phenomenon.

Abstract:Assume that $\alpha>1$ is an algebraic number and $\xi\neq0$ is a real number. We are concerned with the distribution of the fractional parts of the sequence $(\xi \alpha^{n})$. Under various Diophantine conditions on $\xi$ and $\alpha$, we obtain lower bounds on the number $n$ with $1\leq n\leq N $ for which the fractional part of the sequence $(\xi \alpha^{n})_{n\geq1}$ fall into a prescribed region $I\subset [0,1]$, extending several results in the literature. As an application, we show that the Fourier decay rate of some self-similar measures is logarithmic, generalizing a result of Varjú and Yu.

Abstract:For any integer $k\geq 1,$ define $L_k: \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}$ by $(a_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\mapsto (a'_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ where $a'_n=\det(a_{n+i+j})_{i,j=0}^{k-1}$. Previously, Zhu showed that $L_k$ preserves the Stieltjes moment (SM) property of sequences (Proc. Am. Math. Soc., 2019). The proof used the characterization of SM sequences in terms of positive semidefinite Hankel matrices. In this note, we give another proof by viewing SM sequences as weighted enumerations of closed walks on $\mathbb{N}$. Our proof is essentially a double-counting argument that views a $k$-tuple of non-crossing Dyck paths as a single closed walk on some bipartite subgraph of $\mathbb{N}^k.$

Abstract:$q$-deformed real numbers are power series with integer coefficients. We study Stieltjes and Jacobi type continued fraction expansions of $q$-deformed real numbers and find many new examples of such continued fractions. We also investigate the corresponding sequences of Hankel determinants and find an infinite family of power series for which several of the first sequences of Hankel determinants consist of $-1,0$ and $1$ only. These Hankel sequences satisfy Somos and Gale-Robinson recurrences.

Abstract:In 1976, Donald Cartwright and John McMullen characterized axiomatically the Riemann-Liouvile fractional integral in a paper that was published in 1978. The motivation for their work was to answer affirmatively to a conjecture stated by J. S. Lew a few years before, in 1972. Essentially, their ``Cartwright-McMullen theorem in fractional calculus'' proved that the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral is the only continuous extension of the usual integral operator to positive real orders, in such a way that the Index Law holds. In this paper, we propose an analogous result for the uniqueness of the extension of the Stieltjes integral operator, in the case of a smooth integrator.

A finiteness condition for complex continued fraction algorithms

Abstract:A continued fraction algorithm allows to represent numbers in a way that is particularly valuable if one wants to approximate irrational numbers by rationals. Some of these algorithms are simple in the sense that the possible representations can be characterized in an easy way. For instance, for the classical continued fraction algorithm each infinite string of positive integer digits (called partial quotients in this setting) can occur. For complex continued fraction algorithms this does not hold. However, for some algorithms an easy condition, the so-called finite range condition, characterizes the possible "digit strings". We show that this condition holds for complex $\boldsymbol{\alpha}$-Hurwitz algorithms with parameters $\boldsymbol{\alpha}\in\mathbb{Q}^2$. Our proofs are elementary, and our result opens new perspectives for the exploration of these algorithms.

Abstract:We determine the classical approximation constants $w_{3}(\zeta),w_{3}^{\ast}(\zeta),\lambda_{3}(\zeta)$ such as the uniform constants $\widehat{w}_{3}(\zeta),\widehat{w}_{3}^{\ast}(\zeta),\widehat{\lambda}_{3}(\zeta)$ associated to real numbers $\zeta$ whose continued fraction expansions are given by a Sturmian word. We more generally provide a description of the combined graph of the parametric successive minima functions defined by Schmidt and Summerer in dimension three for such Sturmian continued fractions. This both complements similar results due to Bugeaud and Laurent concerning the two-dimensional constants and generalizes a recent result of the author. As a side result we obtain new information on the spectra of certain exponents of approximation. Moreover, we provide some information on the exponents $\lambda_{n}(\zeta)$ for a Sturmian continued fraction $\zeta$ and arbitrary $n$.

Abstract:We introduce a $q$-analog of the higher continued fractions introduced by the last three authors in a previous work (together with Gregg Musiker), which are simultaneously a generalization of the $q$-rational numbers of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko. They are defined as ratios of generating functions for $P$-partitions on certain posets. We give matrix formulas for computing them, which generalize previous results in the $q=1$ case. We also show that certain properties enjoyed by the $q$-rationals are also satisfied by our higher versions.

Fractional Finite Sums Theory: a motivation and some new results

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the study of the fractional finite sums theory. We present the classes of functions for which it is possible to characterize the constant related to the derivative of fractional sums (denominated by essence of a function). Examples of the essences of functions are presented, including the Bernoulli numbers, which are obtained as essences of the functions $f(x)=x^a$, $a \in \mathbb{N}^*$. Based on the new results, we can expand the comprehension of the Euler-Maclaurin summation formula for a real number instead of only considering natural numbers. Moreover, we utilize the concept of the essence of a function to propose a new regularization method for divergent series.

Abstract:We consider a conservative ergodic measure-preserving transformation $T$ of the measure space $(X,\mathcal{B},\mu)$ with $\mu$ a $\sigma$-finite measure and $\mu(X)=\infty$. Given an observable $g:X\to \mathbb{R}$, it is well known from results by Aaronson that in general the asymptotic behaviour of the Birkhoff sums $S_Ng(x):= \sum_{j=1}^N\, (g\circ T^{j-1})(x)$ strongly depends on the point $x\in X$, and that there exists no sequence $(d_N)$ for which $S_Ng(x)/d_N \to 1$ for $\mu$-almost every $x\in X$. In this paper we consider the case $g\not\in L^1(X,\mu)$ assuming that there exists $E\in\mathcal{B}$ with $\mu(E)<\infty$ and $\int_E g\,\mathrm{d}\mu=\infty$ and continue the investigation initiated in previous work by the authors. We show that for transformations $T$ with strong mixing assumptions for the induced map on a finite measure set, the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of $S_Ng(x)$ for an unbounded observable $g$ may be obtained using two methods, adding a number of summands depending on $x$ to $S_Ng$ and trimming. The obtained sums are then asymptotic to a scalar multiple of $N$. The results are applied to a couple of non-regular continued fraction algorithms, the backward (or Rényi type) continued fraction and the even-integer continued fraction algorithms, to obtain the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of the sums of the digits of the algorithms.

Abstract:For the each of the five Euclidean rings of complex quadratic integers, we consider a complex continued fraction algorithm with digits in the ring. We show for each algorithm that the maximal digit obeys a Fréchet distribution. We use this to find a limiting distribution for cusp excursions on Bianchi orbifolds associated with the aforementioned rings of quadratic integers.
