Abstract:A partially hinged, partially free rectangular plate is considered, with the aim to address the possible unstable end behaviors of a suspension bridge subject to wind. This leads to a nonlinear plate evolution equation with a nonlocal stretching active in the span-wise direction. The wind-flow in the chord-wise direction is modeled through a piston-theoretic approximation, which provides both weak (frictional) dissipation and non-conservative forces. The long-time behavior of solutions is analyzed from various points of view. Compact global attractors, as well as fractal exponential attractors, are constructed using the recent quasi-stability theory. The non-conservative nature of the dynamics requires the direct construction of a uniformly absorbing ball, and this relies on the superlinearity of the stretching. For some parameter ranges, the non-triviality of the attractor is shown through the spectral analysis of the stationary linearized (non self-adjoint) equation and the existence of multiple unimodal solutions is shown. Several stability results, obtained through energy estimates under various smallness conditions and/or assumptions on the equilibrium set, are also provided. Finally, the existence of a finite set of determining modes for the dynamics is demonstrated, justifying the usual modal truncation in engineering for the study of the qualitative behavior of suspension bridge dynamics.

Abstract:Based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, this paper presents the state space equation for axisymmetric deformation of a laminated transversely isotropic annular plate. The Finite Hankel transform is then introduced and applied to the state space equation. Four exact solutions corresponding to four specified boundary conditions are obtained and expressions for displacements and stresses are presented. Numerical results are finally compared with those obtained by the classical plate theory, the Reissner plate theory and the finite element method.
Analysis of a nonlinear fish-bone model for suspension bridges with rigid hangers in the presence of flow effects

Abstract:We consider a dynamic system of nonlinear partial differential equations modeling the motions of a suspension bridge. This fish-bone model captures the flexural displacements of the bridge deck's mid-line, and each chordal filament's rotation angle from the centerline. These two dynamics are strongly coupled through the effect of cable-hanger, appearing through a sublinear function. Additionally, a structural nonlinearity of Woinowsky-Krieger type is included, allowing for large displacements. Well-posedness of weak solutions is shown and long-time dynamics are studied. In particular, to force the dynamics, we invoke a non-conservative potential flow approximation which, although greatly simplified from the full multi-physics fluid-structure interaction, provides a driver for non-trivial end behaviors. We describe the conditions under which the dynamics are uniformly stable, as well as demonstrate the existence of a compact global attractor under all nonlinear and non-conservative effects. To do so, we invoke the theory of quasi-stability, first explicitly constructing an absorbing ball via stability estimates and, subsequently, demonstrating a stabilizability estimate on trajectory differences applied to the aforesaid absorbing ball. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to examine the possible end behaviors of the dynamics.

Numerical Simulation Of Free Surface Flow With An Elastic Plate Using A Cip-Based Model

Abstract:Free surface flow interaction with an elastic plate is simulated by a Constraint Interpolation Profile-based Model. A finite difference method (FDM) based on the CIP method is used for solving the flow field in a fixed staggered Cartesian grid and a finite element method (FEM) is used for dealing with the structural deformation. Beside, a volume of fluid type method, the THINC/SW (Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing with Slope Weighting) method is used to capture the free surface and a Ghost-Cell Immersed Boundary Method is adopted to couple the fluid and structure interaction. To verify the model, a rolling tank sloshing with a thin elastic plate is computed. Predicted results are found to be more agreement with the experimental results than reference data. Furthermore, two other benchmark experiments are tested, including an elastic gate deformation in dam break and a hanging elastic beam in a shallow oil sloshing. The computed results agree well with published literatures. It validates the reliability of the present solver to deal with nonlinear fluid-structure interactions.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the development of a numerical model for the analysis of nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problems of large-deformable curvilinear fiber-reinforced composite laminated plates in viscous flows. A higher-order shear deformation zig-zag theory in conjunction with nonlinear von Kármán strains is employed to accommodate the large deformations of variable stiffness composite laminated plates. An implicit partitioned fluid-structure interaction method based on an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian framework is adopted for dealing with the coupling of the large-deformable plate and the viscous flow. The validity of the proposed model and method is confirmed by comparing the computed results of a two-layered plate with those available solutions in the literature. Effects of material properties and fiber paths of composite plates on the periodic limit cycle oscillation and the wake-flow vortices are examined. It is found that symmetrical lay-ups of the constant stiffness composite laminated plates can produce asymmetrical flapping shapes, resulting in asymmetrical hairpin vortex structures in the wake flow. For a variable stiffness composite laminated plate, the flexibility of the leading or trailing sections can be adjusted by the curved fiber path, which in turn leads to changes in the plate flapping shapes.

Structural instability of nonlinear plates modelling suspension bridges: mathematical answers to some long-standing questions

Abstract:We model the roadway of a suspension bridge as a thin rectangular plate and we study in detail its oscillating modes. The plate is assumed to be hinged on its short edges and free on its long edges. Two different kinds of oscillating modes are found: longitudinal modes and torsional modes. Then we analyze a fourth order hyperbolic equation describing the dynamics of the bridge. In order to emphasize the structural behavior we consider an isolated equation with no forcing and damping. Due to the nonlinear behavior of the cables and hangers, a structural instability appears. With a finite dimensional approximation we prove that the system remains stable at low energies while numerical results show that for larger energies the system becomes unstable. We analyze the energy thresholds of instability and we show that the model allows to give answers to several questions left open by the Tacoma collapse in 1940.

Abstract:Exact analysis for free vibration of long-span continuous rectangular plates is presented based on the classical Kirchhoff plate theory, using the state space approach associated with joint coupling matrices. Lévy-type solution is adopted to model the field variation in the direction perpendicular to the pair of simply supported edges. The series of internal rigid line supports are parallel to the remaining pair of edges, which can be of an arbitrary combination of simply supported, clamped and free edges. Transfer relationship is derived in the span direction by the state space approach. The joint coupling matrices are employed to avoid numerical instability that exists in the conventional state space approach for high-frequency calculation or long-span geometry. Numerical calculation is carried out to validate effectiveness and efficiency of the present method. Influence of location of internal line supports on natural frequencies of multi-span plates with large aspect ratios is investigated and discussed.

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of the hinged-girder floating bridge is elusive, because the main girder will produce elastic deformation induced by moving loads, as well as movement owing to the action of pier pontoons. Each section of hinged girder has been studied considering the rigid-body motion and elastic deformation at the same time. The moving equations of the hinged-girder floating bridge are established based on the vibration theory of beams. Motion of pier pontoons is studied in time domain as rigid floating bodies with potential theory. The total matrix equation is set up with the assuming modal method, which can be solved numerically. Examples indicate that the present model can express behaviors of the present type of floating bridge efficaciously, which provides technical means for the design and analysis of floating bridges.

Abstract:With the scaling up of ship in recent years, the explicit modeling of stiffened plates has made the numerical analysis time-consuming. The coordination of a massive number of elements may even bring the problem of convergence and stability, making the analysis unsolvable. The simplification of stiffened plate is particularly urgent in the nonlinear transient dynamic evaluation due to its small step time. Therefore, a simplified approach based on the stiffness equivalence for two-way stiffened plate is proposed. Firstly, based on the equilibrium and compatibility equations, the stiffened plate with orthotropic geometric properties is simplified as a single plate with orthotropic material properties. Then the load-deformation relationship of the single plate is developed by coupling the in-plane and out-of-plane stiffnesses. Subsequently, the simplified approach is used for the local hull structure to verify the applicability under static loading condition. Besides, a coupling model approach is proposed to avoid the local deformation error caused by the homogenization assumption. Afterwards, the modal analysis is conducted based on the simplified model of whole ship. Finally, the nonlinear transient dynamic evaluation of the whole ship model is performed under various collision conditions. For the modal analysis, the results of the homogenization model are accurate. But the simplification does not provide a significant improvement in computational efficiency. For the static and dynamic analysis, the responses of coupled model have good agreement with the detailed finite element model, while the computation time is significantly reduced. The simplified modeling approach can improve the computational efficiency, convergence and stability in the nonlinear transient dynamic evaluation of large ship.

Abstract:Abstract Bilayer plates are compound materials that exhibit large bending deformations when exposed to environmental changes that lead to different mechanical responses in the involved materials. In this article a new numerical method that is suitable for simulating the isometric deformation induced by a given material mismatch in a bilayer plate is discussed. A dimensionally reduced formulation of the bending energy is discretized generically in an abstract setting and specified for discrete Kirchhoff triangles; convergence towards the continuous formulation is proved. A practical semi-implicit discrete gradient flow employing a linearization of the isometry constraint is proposed as an iterative method for the minimization of the bending energy; stability and a bound on the violation of the isometry constraint are proved. The incorporation of obstacles is discussed and the practical performance of the method is illustrated with numerical experiments involving the simulation of large bending deformations and investigation of contact phenomena.

Abstract:The dynamics of viscous fluid flow over a circular flexible plate are studied numerically by an immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method for the fluid flow and a finite-element method for the plate motion. When the plate is clamped at its centre and placed in a uniform flow, it deforms by the flow-induced forces exerted on its surface. A series of distinct deformation modes of the plate are found in terms of the azimuthal fold number from axial symmetry to multifold deformation patterns. The developing process of deformation modes is analysed and both steady and unsteady states of the fluid-structure system are identified. The drag reduction due to the plate deformation and the elastic potential energy of the flexible plate are investigated. Theoretical analysis is performed to elucidate the deformation characteristics. The results obtained in this study provide physical insight into the understanding of the mechanisms on the dynamics of the fluid-structure system.

Abstract:We consider a deformable plate interacting with a non-Newtonian fluid flow in three dimensions as a simple model problem for fluid-structure-interaction phenomena in life sciences (e.g., red blood cell interacting with blood flow). A power-law function is used for the constitutive equation of the non-Newtonian fluid. The lattice Boltzmann equation (the D3Q19 model) is used for modeling the fluid flow. The immersed boundary (IB) method is used for modeling the flexible plate and handling the fluid-plate interaction. The plate drag and its scaling are studied; the influences of three dimensionless parameters (power-law exponent, bending modulus, and generalized Reynolds number) are investigated.

Abstract:Advances in Structural Engineering, Ahead of Print. An analytical model for predicting the deformation and internal forces of multitower suspension bridges is proposed in this paper. Equilibrium differential equations and deformation coordination equations are established based on deflection theory and coupling analysis of bridge components, in which the vertical stiffness contribution of girders and the longitudinal stiffness of all towers are considered. The equations for the deformation and internal forces of the bridge components, including towers, hangers, cables, and girders, are derived taking into account the live loads to which the multitower suspension bridge is subjected. The equations capture the mechanical characteristics of the bridge components, and the results can be obtained explicitly with the proposed model, notably improving the calculation efficiency. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed model are verified by two finite element model examples featuring two and three towers. A parametric analysis is performed to investigate the impact of major bridge parameters using the proposed model. The analysis results indicate that the longitudinal stiffness ratio of the mid-tower to the main cable plays an important role in the key design indices, including girder deflection and safety factor of anti-slipping of the saddle. A suitable stiffness range for the mid-tower is obtained by the proposed model.

Abstract:We consider the cylindrical bending of a simply-supported orthotropic rectangular plate, which is small-periodically heterogeneous in the thickness direction. A homogenized plate model is first established by using the two-scale asymptotic expansion method. The state-space method is then adopted to analyze the homogenized plate exactly. Analytical expressions for two sets of approximate stresses, i.e. the homogenized model stresses and the zeroth-order two-scale model stresses, are presented. To check the accuracy of the approximate stresses, the state-space method is also applied to the original laminate plate or the approximate laminate model of the original heterogeneous plate with continuously varying material properties to obtain an analytical solution. In the latter case, the analytical solution is approximate but approaches the exact solution gradually when the number of layers increases. In order to avoid numerical instability, the joint coupling matrix is utilized. Numerical results illustrate that the two-scale model can predict accurately the realistic stress field in the original plate if it contains enough repeated units along the thickness.
Nonlinear Dynamics of an Axially Moving Plate Submerged in Fluid with Parametric and Forced Excitation

Abstract:In this study, analytical and numerical methods are applied to investigate the dynamic response of an axially moving plate subjected to parametric and forced excitation. Based on the classical thin plate theory, the governing equation of the plate coupled with fluid is established and further discretized through the Galerkin method. These equations are solved using the method of multiple scales to obtain amplitude-frequency curves and phase-frequency curves. The stability of steady-state response is examined using Lyapunov's stability theory. In addition, numerical analysis is employed to validate the results of analytical solutions based on the Runge–Kutta method. The multi-value and stability of periodic solutions are verified through stable periodic orbits. Detailed parametric studies show that proper selection of system parameters enables the system to stay in primary resonance or simultaneous resonance, and the state of the system can switch among different periodic motions, contributing to the optimization of fluid–structure interaction system.

Abstract:A full theory for hinged beams and degenerate plates with multiple intermediate piers is developed. The analysis starts with the variational setting and the study of the linear stationary problem in one dimension. Well-posedness results are provided and the possible loss of regularity, due to the presence of the piers, is underlined. A complete spectral theorem is then proved, explicitly determining the eigenvalues on varying of the position of the piers and exhibiting the fundamental modes of oscillation. The obtained eigenfunctions are used to tackle the study of the nonlinear evolution problem in presence of different nonlinearities, focusing on the appearance of linear and (a suitable notion of) nonlinear instability, with a twofold goal: finding the most reliable nonlinearity describing the oscillations of real structures and determining the position of the piers that maximizes the stability of the structure. The last part of the paper is devoted to the study of degenerate plate models, where the structure is composed by a central beam moving vertically and by a continuum of cross-sections free to rotate around the beam and allowed to deflect from the horizontal equilibrium position. The torsional instability of the structure is investigated, taking into account the impact of different nonlinear terms aiming at modeling the action of cables and hangers in a suspension bridge. Again, the optimal position of the piers in terms of stability is discussed. The stability analysis is carried out both by means of analytical tools, such as Floquet theory, and numerical experiments. Several open problems and possible future developments are presented.

An SPH formulation for general plate and shell structures with finite deformation and large rotation

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a reduced-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) formulation for quasi-static and dynamic analyses of plate and shell structures undergoing finite deformation and large rotation. By exploiting Uflyand-Mindlin plate theory, the present surface-particle formulation is able to resolve the thin structures by using only one layer of particles at the mid-surface. To resolve the geometric non-linearity and capture finite deformation and large rotation, two reduced-dimensional linear-reproducing correction matrices are introduced, and weighted non-singularity conversions between the rotation angle and pseudo normal are formulated. A new non-isotropic Kelvin-Voigt damping is proposed especially for the both thin and moderately thick plate and shell structures to increase the numerical stability. In addition, a shear-scaled momentum-conserving hourglass control algorithm with an adaptive limiter is introduced to suppress the mismatches between the particle position and pseudo normal and those estimated with the deformation gradient. A comprehensive set of test problems, for which the analytical or numerical results from literature or those of the volume-particle SPH model are available for quantitative and qualitative comparison, are examined to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the present method.

Abstract:A semi-analytical modeling method towards the static and dynamic analyses for a class of flexure hinge-based compliant mechanisms or their composed systems is presented to provide accurate and efficient solutions. It is realized by firstly transforming the theoretical compliance matrix of a flexure hinge into a unified elemental stiffness matrix of a variable cross-section beam. Then, the semi-analytical finite element model of complex compliant mechanisms is established based on Lagrange's equation taking the flexure hinge, the flexible beam and the lumped mass as the minimum elements. Shearing effects of the flexure hinge and rotary inertia of the flexible beam are included to enhance the modeling accuracy. A comparison of the method with another existing theoretical method and the finite element software ANSYS for two exemplary compliant mechanisms reveals a maximum deviation of less than 8% regarding the static displacement and the fundamental frequency but with a much substantial reduction of degrees of freedom. The results suggest the presented method is applicable to time-critical scenarios such as dynamic topology optimization and real-time feedback control simulation for complex compliant mechanisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an efficient and accurate approach to investigate the post-buckling behavior of sandwich structures. In this framework, a novel one-dimensional layer-wise model using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory in the skins and higher-order kinematics in the core is proposed. The resulting nonlinear governing equations are then solved by the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) with a bifurcation indicator, which is more reliable and efficient than the classical iterative methods, e.g., Newton-Raphson method, in terms of detecting critical points and computing bifurcated branches. Several numerical tests, i.e., global buckling, local wrinkling and global-local-coupling instability phenomena of sandwich beams, are performed and the results show that the proposed approach is able to efficiently and precisely characterize the critical loads and the post-buckling behaviors of sandwich structures. Finally, the effect of three aspects, i.e., kinematics, strain-displacement relationships and interpolation functions on the computational accuracy of predicting these instability phenomena are investigated.
