Abstract:It is well known that a non-singular real plane projective curve of degree five with five connected components is separating if and only if its ovals are in non-convex position. In this article, this property is set into a different context and generalised to all real plane separating (M-2)-curves.

Abstract:A rational function on a real algebraic curve $C$ is called separating if it takes real values only at real points. Such a function defines a covering $\mathbb R C\to\mathbb{RP}^1$. Let $c_1,\dots,c_r$ be connected components of $\mathbb R C$. M. Kummer and K. Shaw defined the separating semigroup of $C$ as the set of all sequences $(d_1(f),\dots,d_r(f))$ where $f$ is a separating function and $d_i(f)$ is the degree of the restriction of $f$ to $c_i$. In the present paper we describe the separating semigroups of all genus 4 curves. For the proofs we consider the canonical embedding of $C$ into a quadric $X$ in $\mathbb P^3$ and apply Abel's theorem to 1-forms obtained as Poincaré residues at $C$ of certain meromorphic 2-forms on $X$.

Abstract:We use the isotropic projection of Laguerre geometry in order to establish a correspondence between plane curves and null curves in the Minkowski $3$-space. We describe the geometry of null curves (Cartan frame, pseudo-arc parameter, pseudo-torsion, pairs of associated curves) in terms of the curvature of the corresponding plane curves. This leads to an alternative description of all plane curves which are Laguerre congruent to a given one.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold. First of all, we confirm a few basic criteria of the finiteness of real forms of a given smooth complex projective variety, in terms of the Galois cohomology set of the discrete part of the automorphism group, the cone conjecture and the topological entropy. We then apply them to show that a smooth complex projective surface has at most finitely many non-isomorphic real forms unless it is either rational or a non-minimal surface birational to either a K3 surface or an Enriques surface. In the second part of the paper, we construct an Enriques surface whose blow-up at one point admits infinitely many non-isomorphic real forms. This answers a question of Kondo to us and also shows the three exceptional cases really occur.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that if two germs of plane curves ( C , 0) and $$(C',0)$$ ( C ′ , 0 ) with at least one singular branch are equivalent by a (real) smooth diffeomorphism, then C is complex isomorphic to $$C'$$ C ′ or to $$\overline{C'}$$ C ′ ̄ . A similar result was shown by Ephraim for irreducible hypersurfaces before, but his proof is not constructive. Indeed, we show that the complex isomorphism is given by the Taylor series of the diffeomorphism. We also prove an analogous result for the case of non-irreducible hypersurfaces containing an irreducible component that is non-factorable. Moreover, we provide a general overview of the different classifications of plane curve singularities.

Abstract:Let $R=K[x,y,z]$. A reduced plane curve $C=V(f)\subset \mathbf P^2$ is $free \ $ if its associated module of tangent derivations $\mathrm{Der}(f)$ is a free $R$-module, or equivalently if the corresponding sheaf $T_ {\mathbf P^2 }(-\log C)$ of vector fields tangent to $C$ splits as a direct sum of line bundles on $\mathbf P^2$. In general, free curves are difficult to find, and in this note, we describe a new method for constructing free curves in $\mathbf P^2$. The key tools in our approach are eigenschemes and pencils of curves, combined with an interpretation of Saito's criterion in this context. Previous constructions typically applied only to curves with quasihomogeneous singularities, which is not necessary in our approach. We illustrate our method by constructing large families of free curves.

Abstract:We prove that the equisingular deformation type of a simple real plane sextic curve with smooth real part is determined by its real homological type, \ie, the polarization, exceptional divisors, and real structure recorded in the homology of the covering $K3$-surface. As an illustration, we obtain an equisingular deformation classification of real plane sextics with empty real part (for completeness, we consider the few non-simple ones as well).

Generic models for genus 2 curves with real multiplication

Abstract:Explicit models of families of genus 2 curves with multiplication by $\sqrt D$ are known for $D= 2, 3, 5$. We obtain generic models for genus 2 curves over $\mathbb Q$ with real multiplication in 12 new cases, including all fundamental discriminants $D < 40$. A key step in our proof is to develop an algorithm for minimisation of conic bundles fibred over $\mathbb{P}^2$. We apply this algorithm to simplify the equations for the Mestre conic associated to the generic point on the Hilbert modular surface of fundamental discriminant $D < 100$ computed by Elkies--Kumar.

Negative Curves and Elliptic Fibrations on a Special Rational Surface

Abstract:The blown up complex projective plane in the twelve triple points of the dual Hesse arrangement has an infinite number of irreducible rational curves of self-intersection $-1$, for short, $(-1)$-curves. In the preprint version of [Dumnicki, 2019], T. Szemberg et alii tried to keep track of plane rational curves which produce $(-1)$-curves, by applying successively to a straight line compositions taken from three different quadratic Cremona maps preserving the dual Hesse arrangement, in such a way as to produce a diagram of bifurcations. The symmetric aspect of the degrees of curves encoded in the entries of the diagram motivated them to propose the problem of to give a closed formula for the degree of the rational curve at the entry $a_{i,j}$. We solved this problem for a slightly different diagram of bifurcations of the same Cremona maps, which recover and extends the data on degrees of the original diagram. We also are able to describe the position and multiplicites of singularities of each rational curve encoded in the diagram, as well as their equations (implemented in Python and Singular softwares). Our idea is to embed the plane rational curves as components of special elements of elliptic pencils, then apply a closed formula for the degrees of the generic curves of the elliptic pencils of [Puchuri, 2013], and, from this, extract the data of the rational curves on each entry of the diagram.

Abstract:We study the space of non-simple polarised abelian surfaces. Specifically, we describe for which pairs (m, n) the locus of polarised abelian surfaces of type (1, d) that contain two complementary elliptic curve of exponents m, n, denoted Ed(m,n)$$\mathcal {E}_d(m,n)$$ is non-empty. We show that if d is square-free, the locus Ed(m,n)$$\mathcal {E}_d(m,n)$$ is an irreducible surface (if non-empty). We also show that the loci Ed(d,d)$$\mathcal {E}_d(d,d)$$ can have many components if d is an odd square. Abstract:We address the question concerning the birational geometry of the strata of holomorphic and quadratic differentials. We show strata of holomorphic and quadratic differentials to be uniruled in small genus by constructing rational curves via pencils on K3 and del Pezzo surfaces respectively. Restricting to genus $3\leq g\leq6$, we construct projective bundles over a rational varieties that dominate the holomorphic strata with length at most $g-1$, hence showing in addition that these strata are unirational.

Severi curves of rational elliptic surfaces

Abstract:We study Severi curves parametrizing rational bisections of elliptic fibrations associated to general pencils of plane cubics. Our main results show that these Severi curves are connected and reduced, and we give an upper bound on their geometric genus using quasi-modular forms. We conjecture that these Severi curves are eventually reducible, and we formulate a precise conjecture for their degrees in $\mathbb{P}^2$, featuring a divisor sum formula for collision multiplicities of branch points.

Abstract:In this paper we examine the topology of Brill-Noether varieties associated to real trigonal curves. More precisely, we aim to count the connected components of the real locus of the varieties parametrizing linear systems of degree $d$ and dimension at least $r$. We do this count when the relations $m=g-d+r-1\leq d-2r-1$ are satisfied, where $m$ is the Maroni invariant and $g$ is the genus of the curve.

Partly inspired by the case of homogenous spaces carrying bi-algebraic structures (such as torii, Abelian varieties and Shimura varieties), Klingler and Lerer recently showed that any bi-algebraic curve in a stratum of the moduli space of Abelian differentials is linear provided that the so-called condition $(\star)$ is fulfilled. In this note, we construct a non-linear bi-algebraic curve, resp. surface, of Abelian differentials of genus $7$, resp. $10$.

Abstract:Working over a field ${\mathbb{k}}$ of characteristic $\ne 2$, we study what we call bisector fields, which are arrangements of paired lines in the plane that have the property that each line in the arrangement crosses the paired lines in pairs of points that all share the same midpoint. To do so, we use tools from the theory of algebraic curves and projective duality. We obtain a complete classification if ${\mathbb{k}}$ is real closed or algebraically closed, and we obtain a partial classification if ${\mathbb{k}}$ is a finite field. A classification for other fields remains an open question. Ultimately this is a question regarding affine equivalence within a system of certain rational quartic curves.

Abstract:We show that up to automorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^2_{\mathbb C}$ there are $5$ homogeneous convex foliations of degree four on $\mathbb{P}^2_{\mathbb C}.$ Using this result, we give a partial answer to a question posed in $2013$ by D. {Marín} and J. {Pereira} about the classification of reduced convex foliations on~$\mathbb{P}^2_{\mathbb C}.$

We prove that for , the corresponding curve of the pencil does not have the generic topology if and only if either the corresponding curve of the pulled-back pencil to the normalized surface has a non generic topology or w is a limit value for the function along the singular locus of , where f and g are generators of the pencil.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{R}_d$ be the space of stable sheaves $F$ which satisfy the Hilbert polynomial $\chi(F(m))=dm+1$ and are supported on rational curves in the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$. Then $\mathbf{R}_1$ (resp. $\mathbf{R}_2$) is isomorphic to $\mathbf{R}_1\cong\mathbb{P}^2$ (resp. $\mathbf{R}_2\cong \mathbb{P}^5$). Also it is very well-known that $\mathbf{R}_3$ is isomorphic to a $\mathbb{P}^6$-bundle over $\mathbb{P}^2$. In special $\mathbf{R}_d$ is smooth for $d\leq 3$. But for $d\geq4$ case, one can imagine that the space $\mathbf{R}_d$ is no more smooth because of the complexity of boundary curves. In this paper, we obtain an $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{C})$-equivariant smooth resolution of $\mathbf{R}_4$ for $d=4$, which is a $\mathbb{P}^5$-bundle over the blow-up of a Kronecker modules space.
