Abstract:The context of this work is the study of the differential uniformity of polynomials defined over finite fields of even characteristic. We provide infinite families of trinomials with high differential uniformity when the base field is large enough. It means in particular that these trinomials are not exceptional almost perfect nonlinear.

Abstract:We contribute to the exceptional APN conjecture by showing that no polynomial of degree m = 2 r (2 {\ell} + 1) where gcd(r, {\ell}) 2, r 2, {\ell} 1 with a nonzero second leading coefficient can be APN over infinitely many extensions of the base field. More precisely, we prove that for n sufficiently large, all polynomials of F 2 n [x] of such a degree with a nonzero second leading coefficient have a differential uniformity equal to m -- 2.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. Multiplicative differential (and the corresponding [math]-differential uniformity) was introduced by Ellingsen et al. in [[math]-differentials, multiplicative uniformity and (almost) perfect [math]-nonlinearity, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 66(9) (2020) 5781–5789], which has attracted lots of attention. Functions with low [math]-differential uniformity over finite fields, especially the P[math]N and AP[math]N functions, have been widely investigated due to their applications in cryptography. In this paper, we first compute the [math]-differential uniformity of two classes of permutation polynomials. For one of these, we explicitly determine the [math]-DDT entries. For the second type of function, we give bounds for its [math]-differential uniformity. Besides, several classes of P[math]N or AP[math]N functions are presented by employing some known functions and the (generalized) AGW criterion.

Abstract:We study the differential uniformity of the Wan-Lidl polynomials over finite fields. A general upper bound, independent of the order of the field, is established. Additional bounds are established in settings where one of the parameters is restricted. In particular, we establish a class of permutation polynomials which have differential uniformity at most 5 over fields of order $3\bmod 4$, irrespective of the field size. Computational results are also given.

Abstract:The notion of $c$-differential uniformity has recently received a lot of attention since its proposal~\cite{Ellingsen}, and recently a characterization of perfect $c$-nonlinear functions in terms of difference sets in some quasigroups was obtained in~\cite{AMS22}. Independent of their applications as a measure for certain statistical biases, the construction of functions, especially permutations, with low $c$-differential uniformity is an interesting mathematical problem in this area, and recent work has focused heavily in this direction. We provide a few classes of permutation polynomials with low $c$-differential uniformity. The used technique involves handling various Weil sums, as well as analyzing some equations in finite fields, and we believe these can be of independent interest.

Cubic power functions with optimal second-order differential uniformity

Abstract:We discuss the second-order differential uniformity of vectorial Boolean functions. The closely related notion of second-order zero differential uniformity has recently been studied in connection to resistance to the boomerang attack. We prove that monomial functions with univariate form $x^d$ where $d=2^{2k}+2^k+1$ and $\gcd(k,n)=1$ have optimal second-order differential uniformity. Computational results suggest that, up to affine equivalence, these might be the only optimal cubic power functions. We begin work towards generalising such conditions to all monomial functions of algebraic degree 3. We also discuss further questions arising from computational results.

Abstract:Let $F_1,\ldots,F_R$ be homogeneous polynomials with integer coefficients in $n$ variables with differing degrees. Write $\boldsymbol{F}=(F_1,\ldots,F_R)$ with $D$ being the maximal degree. Suppose that $\boldsymbol{F}$ is a nonsingular system and $n\ge D^2 4^{D+6}R^5$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$, whose main term is positive if (i) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution over the $p$-adic units $\mathbb{U}_p$ for all primes $p$, and (ii) $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ has a nonsingular solution in the open cube $(0,1)^n$. This can be viewed as a smooth local-global principle for $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ with differing degrees. It follows that, under (i) and (ii), the set of prime solutions to $\boldsymbol{F}(\boldsymbol{x})=\boldsymbol{0}$ is Zariski dense in the set of its solutions.

The second-order zero differential spectra of some functions over finite fields

Abstract:It was shown by Boukerrou et al.~\cite{Bouk} [IACR Trans. Symmetric Cryptol. 1 2020, 331--362] that the $F$-boomerang uniformity (which is the same as the second-order zero differential uniformity in even characteristic) of perfect nonlinear functions is~$0$ on $\F_{p^n}$ ($p$ prime) and the one of almost perfect nonlinear functions on $\F_{2^n}$ is~$0$. It is natural to inquire what happens with APN or other low differential uniform functions in even and odd characteristics. Here, we explicitly determine the second-order zero differential spectra of several maps with low differential uniformity. In particular, we compute the second-order zero differential spectra for some almost perfect nonlinear (APN) functions, pushing further the study started in Boukerrou et al.~\cite{Bouk} and continued in Li et al. \cite{LYT} [Cryptogr. Commun. 14.3 (2022), 653--662], and it turns out that our considered functions also have low second-order zero differential uniformity.

We prove that there exist exactly three distinct monogenic trinomials of the form whose Galois group is the cyclic group of order 4. Parametrized systems of generalized polynomial equations: first applications to fewnomials

Abstract:We consider positive solutions to parametrized systems of generalized polynomial equations (with real exponents and positive parameters). By a fundamental result obtained in parallel work, polynomial systems are determined by geometric objects, rather than matrices: a polytope $P$ (arising from the coefficient matrix) and two subspaces representing monomial differences and dependencies (arising from the exponent matrix). The dimension of the latter subspace, the monomial dependency $d$, is crucial. Indeed, we rewrite $\textit{polynomial}$ equations in terms of $d$ $\textit{binomial}$ equations on the coefficient polytope $P$, involving $d$ monomials in the parameters. We further study the solution set on $P$ using methods from analysis such as sign-characteristic functions and Wronskians. In this work, we present first applications to fewnomial systems through five (classes of) examples. In particular, we study (i) $n$ trinomials involving ${n+2}$ monomials in $n$ variables, having dependency $d=1$, and (ii) one trinomial and one $t$-nomial (with $t\ge3$) in two variables, having $d=t-1\ge2$. For (i), we bound the number of positive solutions using the number of roots of a univariate polynomial of degree at most $n$. We also show that this number is always less than or equal to the number of sign changes in an optimal Descartes' rule given in Bihan et al. (2021). For (ii), we improve upper bounds given in Li et al. (2003) and Koiran et al. (2015). Further, for two trinomials ($t=3$), we refine the known upper bound of five in terms of the exponents, and we find an example with five positive solutions that is even simpler than the smallest "Haas system".

Multiple recurrence and popular differences for polynomial patterns in rings of integers

Abstract:We demonstrate that the phenomenon of popular differences (aka the phenomenon of large intersections) holds for natural families of polynomial patterns in rings of integers of number fields. If $K$ is a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $E \subseteq \mathcal{O}_K$ has positive upper Banach density $d^*(E) = \delta > 0$, we show, inter alia: 1. If $p(x) \in K[x]$ is an intersective $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomial and $r, s \in \mathcal{O}_K$ are distinct and nonzero, then for any $\varepsilon > 0$, the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^3 - \varepsilon. \] is syndetic. Moreover, if $\frac{s}{r} \in \mathbb{Q}$, then there are syndetically many $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n), x + (r+s)p(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^4 - \varepsilon. \] 2. If $\{p_1, \dots, p_k\} \subseteq K[x]$ is a jointly intersective family of linearly independent $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomials, then the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + p_1(n), \dots, x + p_k(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right)> \delta^{k+1} - \varepsilon \] is syndetic. These two results generalize and extend previous work of Frantzikinakis and Kra on polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}$ and build upon recent work of the authors and Best on linear patterns in general abelian groups. The above combinatorial results follow from multiple recurrence results in ergodic theory, which require a sharpening of existing tools for handling polynomial multiple ergodic averages. A key advancement made in this paper is a new result on the equidistribution of polynomial orbits in nilmanifolds, which can be seen as a far-reaching generalization of Weyl's equidistribution theorem.

Scattered trinomials of $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[X]$ in even characteristic

Abstract:In recent years, several families of scattered polynomials have been investigated in the literature. However, most of them only exist in odd characteristic. In [B. Csajbók, G. Marino and F. Zullo: New maximum scattered linear sets of the projective line, Finite Fields Appl. 54 (2018), 133-150; G. Marino, M. Montanucci and F. Zullo: MRD-codes arising from the trinomial $x^q+x^{q^3}+cx^{q^5}\in\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[x]$, Linear Algebra Appl. 591 (2020), 99-114], the authors proved that the trinomial $f_c(X)=X^{q}+X^{q^{3}}+cX^{q^{5}}$ of $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[X]$ is scattered under the assumptions that $q$ is odd and $c^2+c=1$. They also explicitly observed that this is false when $q$ is even. In this paper, we provide a different set of conditions on $c$ for which this trinomial is scattered in the case of even $q$. Using tools of algebraic geometry in positive characteristic, we show that when $q$ is even and sufficiently large, there are roughly $q^3$ elements $c \in \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$ such that $f_{c}(X)$ is scattered. Also, we prove that the corresponding MRD-codes and $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$ are not equivalent to the previously known ones.

Intersecting families of polynomials over finite fields

Abstract:This paper establishes an analog of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem to polynomial rings over finite fields, affirmatively answering a conjecture of C. Tompkins. A $k$-uniform family of subsets of a set of finite size $n$ is $l$-intersecting if any two subsets in the family intersect in at least $l$ elements. The study of such intersecting families is a core subject of extremal set theory, tracing its roots to the seminal 1961 Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, which establishes a sharp upper bound on the size of these families. As an analog of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, we determine the largest possible size of a family of monic polynomials, each of degree $n$, over a finite field $F_q$, where every pair of polynomials in the family shares a common factor of degree at least $l$. We establish that the upper bound for this size is $q^{n-l}$ and further characterize all extremal families that achieve this maximum size. Further extending our study to triple-intersecting families, where every triplet of polynomials shares a common factor of degree at least $l$, we prove that only trivial families achieve the corresponding upper bound. Moreover, by relaxing the conditions to include polynomials of degree at most $n$, we affirm that the same upper bound holds and only trivial families achieve the corresponding upper bound.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> We obtain new uniform bounds for the symmetric tensor rank of multiplication in finite extensions of any finite field $\mathbb {F}_p$ or $\mathbb {F}_{p^2}$ where p denotes a prime number $\ge 5$ . In this aim, we use the symmetric Chudnovsky-type generalized algorithm applied on sufficiently dense families of modular curves defined over $\mathbb {F}_{p^2}$ attaining the Drinfeld–Vladuts bound and on the descent of these families to the definition field $\mathbb {F}_p$ . These families are obtained thanks to prime number density theorems of type Hoheisel, in particular a result due to Dudek (Funct Approx Commmentarii Math, 55(2):177–197, 2016).

On common index divisors and monogenity of certain number fields defined by trinomials of type $x^{2^r}+ax^m+b$

Abstract:Let $K = \Q(þ)$ be a number with $þ$ a root of an irreducible trinomial of type $ F(x)= x^{2^r}+ax^m+b \in \Z[x]$. In this paper, based on the $p$-adic Newton polygon techniques applied on decomposition of primes in number fields and the classical index theorem of Ore \cite{Narprime, O}, we study the monogenity of $K$. More precisely, we prove that if $a$ and $1+b$ are both divisible by $32$, then $K$ cannot be monogenic. For $m=1$, we provide explicit conditions on $a$, $b$ and $r$ for which $K$ is not monogenic. We also construct a family of irreducible trinomials which are not monogenic, but their roots generate monogenic number fields. To illustrate our results, we give some computational examples.

Universality theorems for zeros of random real polynomials with fixed coefficients

Abstract:Consider a monic polynomial of degree $n$ whose subleading coefficients are independent, identically distributed, nondegenerate random variables having zero mean, unit variance, and finite moments of all orders, and let $m \geq 0$ be a fixed integer. We prove that such a random monic polynomial has exactly $m$ real zeros with probability $n^{-3/4+o(1)}$ as $n\to \infty$ through integers of the same parity as $m$. More generally, we determine conditions under which a similar asymptotic formula describes the corresponding probability for families of random real polynomials with multiple fixed coefficients. Our work extends well-known universality results of Dembo, Poonen, Shao, and Zeitouni, who considered the family of real polynomials with all coefficients random. As a number-theoretic consequence of these results, we deduce that an algebraic integer $\alpha$ of degree $n$ has exactly $m$ real Galois conjugates with probability $n^{-3/4+o(1)}$, when such $\alpha$ are ordered by the heights of their minimal polynomials.

Abstract:In this article, we study the monogenity of a tower of number fields defined by the iterates of a stable polynomial. We give a necessary condition for the monogenity of the number fields defined by the iterates of a stable polynomial. When the stable polynomial is of certain type, we also give a sufficient condition for the monogenity of the fields defined by each of its iterate. As a consequence, we obtain an infinite 3-tower of monogenic number fields. Moreover, we construct an infinite family of stable polynomials such that each of its iterate is non-monogenic.

Abstract:We extend a technique, originally due to the first author and Poonen, for proving cases of the Strong Uniform Boundedness Principle (SUBP) in algebraic dynamics over function fields of positive characteristic. The original method applied to unicritical polynomials for which the characteristic does not divide the degree. We show that many new 1-parameter families of polynomials satisfy the SUBP, including the family of all quadratic polynomials in even characteristic. We also give a new family of non-polynomial, non-Lattès rational functions that satisfies the SUBP.
