Abstract:We study commutative Schur rings over the symplectic groups Sp$(n,2)$ containing the class $\mathcal C$ of symplectic transvections. We find the possible partitions of $\mathcal C$ determined by the Schur ring. We show how this restricts the possibilities for multiplicity one subgroups of Sp$(n,2)$.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Similar results are proved for the Jacobi groups GL(n)(R) (sic) H2n+1(R), GL(n)(C) (sic) H2n+1 (C), U(p, q) (sic) H2p+2q+1(R), Sp(2n)(R) (sic) H2n+1(R), Sp(2n)(C) (sic) H2n+1 (C) with their respective subgroups GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), Sp(2n)(R), and SP2n(C).

Abstract:Schur rings over the infinite dihedral group $\mathcal{Z}\rtimes\mathcal{Z}_2$ are studied according to properties of Schur rings over infinite groups and the classification of Schur rings over infinite cyclic groups. Schur rings over $\mathcal{Z}\rtimes{\mathcal{Z}}_2$ are classified under the assumption that $\mathcal{Z}$ is an $\mathcal{A}$-subgroup. Those Schur rings are proved to be traditional.

Non-Perturbative Explorations of Chiral Rings in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs

Abstract:We study the conditions under which 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) have multiplets housing operators that are chiral with respect to an $\mathcal{N}=1$ subalgebra. Our main focus is on the set of often-ignored and relatively poorly understood $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ representations. These multiplets typically evade direct detection by the most popular non-perturbative 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ tools and correspondences. In spite of this fact, we demonstrate the ubiquity of $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ multiplets and show they are associated with interesting phenomena. For example, we give a purely algebraic proof that they are present in all local unitary $\mathcal{N}>2$ SCFTs. We also show that $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ multiplets exist in $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories with rank greater than one and a conformal manifold or a freely generated Coulomb branch. Using recent topological quantum field theory results, we argue that certain $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ multiplets exist in broad classes of theories with the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-valued 't Hooft anomaly for $Sp(N)$ global symmetry. Motivated by these statements, we then study the question of whether $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ multiplets exist in rank-one SCFTs with exactly $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY. We conclude with various open questions.

On cocliques in commutative Schurian association schemes of the symmetric group

Abstract:Given the symmetric group $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and a multiplicity-free subgroup $H\leq G$, the orbitals of the action of $G$ on $G/H$ by left multiplication induce a commutative association scheme. The irreducible constituents of the permutation character of $G$ acting on $G/H$ are indexed by partitions of $n$ and if $\lambda \vdash n$ is the second largest partition in dominance ordering among these, then the Young subgroup $\operatorname{Sym}(\lambda)$ admits two orbits in its action on $G/H$, which are $\mathcal{S}_\lambda$ and its complement. In their monograph [Erdős-Ko-Rado theorems: Algebraic Approaches. {\it Cambridge University Press}, 2016] (Problem~16.13.1), Godsil and Meagher asked whether $\mathcal{S}_\lambda$ is a coclique of a graph in the commutative association scheme arising from the action of $G$ on $G/H$. If such a graph exists, then they also asked whether its smallest eigenvalue is afforded by the $\lambda$-module. In this paper, we initiate the study of this question by taking $\lambda = [n-1,1]$. We show that the answer to this question is affirmative for the pair of groups $\left(G,H\right)$, where $G = \operatorname{Sym}(2k+1)$ and $H = \operatorname{Sym}(2) \wr \operatorname{Sym}(k)$, or $G = \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ and $H$ is one of $\operatorname{Alt}(k) \times \operatorname{Sym}(n-k),\ \operatorname{Alt}(k) \times \operatorname{Alt}(n-k)$, or $\left(\operatorname{Alt}(k)\times \operatorname{Alt}(n-k)\right) \cap \operatorname{Alt}(n)$. For the pair $(G,H) = \left(\operatorname{Sym}(2k),\operatorname{Sym}(k)\wr \operatorname{Sym}(2)\right)$, we also prove that the answer to this question of Godsil and Meagher is negative.

Abstract:For every genuine irreducible admissible smooth representation $\pi$ of the metaplectic group $\widetilde{{\rm Sp}}(2n)$ over a $p$-adic field, and every smooth oscillator representation $\omega_\psi$ of $\widetilde{{\rm Sp}}(2n)$, we prove that the tensor product $\pi\otimes\omega_\psi$ is multiplicity free as a smooth representation of the symplectic group ${\rm Sp}(2n)$. Similar results are proved for general linear groups and unitary groups.

Abstract:A linear group is called unisingular if every element of it has eigenvalue 1. A certain aspect of the theory of abelian varieties requires the knowledge of unisingular irreducible subgroups of the symplectic groups over the field of two elements. A more special, but an important question is on the existence of such subgroups in the symplectic groups of particular degree. We answer this question for almost all degrees $2n<250$, specifically, the question remains open only 7 values of $n$. Additionally, the paper contains results of general nature on the structure of unisingular irreducible linear groups.

Abstract:In this paper, the irreducible representations of the coordinate ring Oq(spC2n) of quantum symplectic space are classified. Especially, the De Concini–Kac–Procesi conjecture is proved to be true for this algebra. The main steps are the computation of the center and the degree of the algebra Oq(spC2n) by using the associated quasipolynomial algebra Oq(spC2n), find some “good” points in the underlying symplectic leaves and construct some quasipolynomial algebras correspond to these “good” points.
An analysis of the multiplicity spaces in branching of symplectic groups

Abstract:Branching of symplectic groups is not multiplicity free. We describe a new approach to resolving these multiplicities that is based on studying the associated branching algebra $${\mathcal{B}}$$. The algebra $${\mathcal{B}}$$ is a graded algebra whose components encode the multiplicities of irreducible representations of Sp2n–2 in irreducible representations of Sp2n. Our first theorem states that the map taking an element of Sp2n to its principal n × (n + 1) submatrix induces an isomorphism of $${\mathcal{B}}$$ to a different branching algebra $${\mathcal{B}^{\prime}}$$. The algebra $${\mathcal{B}^{\prime}}$$ encodes multiplicities of irreducible representations of GLn–1 in certain irreducible representations of GLn+1. Our second theorem is that each multiplicity space that arises in the restriction of an irreducible representation of Sp2n to Sp2n–2 is canonically an irreducible module for the n-fold product of SL2. In particular, this induces a canonical decomposition of the multiplicity spaces into one-dimensional spaces, thereby resolving the multiplicities.
$\mathrm{SL}_2$-like Properties of Matrices Over Noncommutative Rings and Generalizations of Markov Numbers

Abstract:We study $2\times 2$ matrices over noncommutative rings with anti-involution, with a special focus on the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)$. We define traces and determinants of such matrices and use them to prove a Cayley Hamilton identity and trace relations which generalize well known relations for elements of $\mathrm{SL}_2(R)$ over a commutative ring. We compare the structure of elements of $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)$ with Manin matrices over general noncommutative rings; this naturally leads to a quantization $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)_q$. In contrast to the usual definition of the quantum group as a deformation of the ring of matrix functions on $\mathrm{SL}_2(R)$, this quantization produces a group of matrices over a new noncommutative ring with involution. We finish the comparison by constructing a generalization of a Hopf algebra structure on the noncommutative ring of matrix functions of our quantum group. Finally, we use the noncommutative surface-type cluster algebras of Berenstein and Retakh to give a geometric interpretation of our Hopf algebra structure and to produce noncommutative generalizations of Markov numbers over many rings with involution including the complex numbers, dual numbers, matrix rings, and group rings.

Separability of Schur rings over abelian groups of odd order

Abstract:An $S$-ring (a Schur ring) is said to be separable with respect to a class of groups $\mathcal{K}$ if every algebraic isomorphism from the $S$-ring in question to an $S$-ring over a group from $\mathcal{K}$ is induced by a combinatorial isomorphism. A finite group $G$ is said to be separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$ if every $S$-ring over $G$ is separable with respect to $\mathcal{K}$. We prove that every abelian group $G$ of order $9p$, where $p$ is a prime, is separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Modulo previously obtained results, this completes a classification of noncyclic abelian groups of odd order that are separable with respect to the class of all finite abelian groups. Also this implies that the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of the class of Cayley graphs over $G$ is at most 2.

Top-degree rational cohomology in the symplectic group of a number ring

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $R = \mathcal{O}_K$. We show that if $R$ is not a principal ideal domain, then the symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(R)$ has non-trivial rational cohomology in its virtual cohomological dimension. This demonstrates a sharp contrast to the situation where $R$ is Euclidean. To prove our result, we study the symplectic Steinberg module, i.e. the top-dimensional homology group of the spherical building associated to $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(K)$. We show that this module is not generated by integral apartment classes.

Abstract:For a smooth affine algebra $R$ of dimension $d \geq 3$ over a field $k$ and an invertible alternating matrix $\chi$ of rank $2n$, the group $Sp(\chi)$ of invertible matrices of rank $2n$ over $R$ which are symplectic with respect to $\chi$ acts on the right on the set $Um_{2n}(R)$ of unimodular rows of length $2n$ over $R$. In this paper, we prove that $Sp(\chi)$ acts transitively on $Um_{2n}(R)$ if $k$ is algebraically closed, $d! \in k^{\times}$ and $2n \geq d$.

Symmetries and intrinsic vs. extrinsic properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0, n}$

Abstract:We consider the following question: How much of the combinatorial structure determining properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ is ``intrinsic'' and how much new information do we obtain from using properties specific to this space? Our approach is to study the effect of the $S_n$-action. Apart from being a natural action to consider, it is known that this action does not extend to other wonderful compactifications associated to the $A_{n - 2}$ hyperplane arrangement. We find the differences in intersection patterns of faces on associahedra and permutohedra which characterize the failure to extend to other compactifications and show that this is reflected by most terms of degree $\ge 2$ of the cohomology/Chow ring. Even from a combinatorial perspective, terms of degree 1 are more naturally related to geometric properties. In particular, imposing $S_n$-invariance implies that many of the log concave sequences obtained from degree 1 Hodge--Riemann relations (and all of them for $n \le 2000$) on the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ can be restricted to those with a special recursive structure. A conjectural result implies that this is true for all $n$. Elements of these sequences can be expressed as polynomials in quantum Littlewood--Richardson coefficients multiplied by terms such as partition components, factorials, and multinomial coefficients. After dividing by binomial coefficients, polynomials with these numbers as coefficients can be interepreted in terms of volumes or resultants. Finally, we find a connection between the geometry of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ and higher degree Hodge--Riemann relations of other rings via Toeplitz matrices.

Abstract:For a punctured surface $S$, we characterize the representations of its fundamental group into $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$ that arise as the monodromy of a meromorphic projective structure on $S$ with poles of order at most two and no apparent singularities. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gallo-Kapovich-Marden concerning $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^1$-structures on closed surfaces, and settles a long-standing question about characterizing monodromy groups for the Schwarzian equation on punctured spheres. The proof involves a geometric interpretation of the Fock-Goncharov coordinates of the moduli space of framed $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$-representations, following ideas of Thurston and some recent results of Allegretti-Bridgeland.

Abstract:Armed with the explicit computation of Schur Multipliers, we offer a classification of SU(n) orbifolds for n = 2,3,4 which permit the turning on of discrete torsion. This is in response to the host of activity lately in vogue on the application of discrete torsion to D-brane orbifold theories. As a by-product, we find a hitherto unknown class of N = 1 orbifolds with non-cyclic discrete torsion group. Furthermore, we supplement the status quo ante by investigating a first example of a non-Abelian orbifold admitting discrete torsion, namely the ordinary dihedral group as a subgroup of SU(3). A comparison of the quiver theory thereof with that of its covering group, the binary dihedral group, without discrete torsion, is also performed.

Abstract:Let $\varphi: C\to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a degree $d$ cover of curves. In work by Castryck, Zhao and the author, we showed how one can attach to each partition $\lambda$ of $d$ a multi-set of scrollar invariants of $\lambda$ with respect to $\varphi$. We studied these invariants when $\varphi$ is simply branched, and related these new scrollar invariants to known geometric data. In this article we show how one can remove this simple branching condition, using the notion of $S_d$-closure as developed by Bhargava and Satriano. With this new framework, we are able to generalize all results from this work to arbitrary covers $C\to \mathbb{P}^1$. In particular, we obtain a syzygy-free interpretation for the splitting types of the syzygy bundles in the Casnati--Ekedahl resolution of an arbitrary cover $\varphi: C\to \mathbb{P}^1$. By using the Maroni bound, we are able to give new general bounds on these splitting types.

Abstract:A surgery on a knot in 3-sphere is called SU(2)-cyclic if it gives a manifold whose fundamental group has no non-cyclic SU(2) representations. Using holonomy perturbations on the Chern-Simons functional, we prove that the distance of two SU(2)-cyclic surgery coefficients is bounded by the sum of the absolute values of their numerators. This is an analog of Culler-Gordon-Luecke-Shalen's cyclic surgery theorem.
