Abstract:This paper studies the global and local properties of the trajectories of Gaussian random fields with stationary increments and proves sufficient conditions for Strassen’s functional laws of the iterated logarithm at zero and infinity respectively. The sets of limit points of those Gaussian random fields are obtained. The main results are applied to fractional Riesz–Bessel processes and the sets of limit points of this field are obtained.

Abstract:We prove a general result on a relationship between a limit of normalized numbers of interval crossings by a càdlàg path and an occupation measure associated with this path. Using this result we define local times of fractional Brownian motions (classically defined as densities of relevant occupation measure) as weak limits of properly normalized numbers of interval crossings. We also discuss a similar result for càdlàg semimartingales, in particular for alpha-stable processes, and for Rosenblatt processes, and provide natural examples of deterministic paths which possess quadratic or higher order variation but no local times.

Abstract:We derive subexponential tail asymptotics for the distribution of the maximum of a compound renewal process with linear component and of a Lévy process, both with negative drift, over random time horizon $\tau$ that does not depend on the future increments of the process. Our asymptotic results are uniform over the whole class of such random times. Particular examples are given by stopping times and by $\tau$ independent of the processes. We link our results with random walk theory.

Abstract:Following our previous work [68], this paper continues to investigate the evolution dynamics of local times of spectrally positive Levy processes with Gaussian components in the spatial direction. We first prove that conditioned on the finiteness of the first time at which the local time at zero exceeds a given value, local times at positive line are equal in law to the unique solution of a stochastic Volterra equation driven by a Gaussian white noise and two Poisson random measures with convolution kernel given in terms of the scale function. The existence and uniqueness of strong solution of the stochastic Volterra equation are also proved when the Levy measure has finite first moment. We then provide several equivalent representations and propose a flow in the local times by establishing a comparison principle for local times of Levy processes with various drifts or stopped when local times at zero exceed different given values. Armed with the stochastic Volterra equation, we also provide some properties of local times, including the uniform moment estimates, $(1/2-\varepsilon)$-Holder continuity and maximal inequality. By using the method of duality, we establish an exponential-affine representation of the Laplace functional in terms of the unique non-negative solution of a nonlinear Volterra equation associated with the Laplace exponent of the Levy process. This gives us another perspective on the evolution dynamics of local times in the spatial direction.

Abstract:We examine the sets of late points of a symmetric random walk on $Z^2$ projected onto the torus $Z^2_K$, culminating in a limit theorem for the cover time of the toral random walk. This extends the work done for the simple random walk in Dembo, et al. (2006) to a large class of random walks projected onto the lattice torus. The approach uses comparisons between planar and toral hitting times and distributions on annuli, and uses only random walk methods.

Abstract:We consider a class of stationary processes exhibiting both long-range dependence and heavy tails. Separate limit theorems for sums and for extremes have been established recently in literature with novel objects appearing in the limits. In this article, we establish the joint sum-max limit theorems for this class of processes. In the finite-variance case, the limit consists of two independent components: a fractional Brownian motion arising from the sum, and a long-range dependent random sup measure arising from the maximum. In the infinite-variance case, we obtain in the limit two dependent components: a stable process and a random sup measure whose dependence structure is described through the local time and range of a stable subordinator. For establishing the limit theorem in the latter case, we also develop a joint convergence result for the local time and range of subordinators, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let (X,(X) over cap) be a pair of Borel standard processes on a Lusin space E that are in weak duality with respect to some or-finite measure m that has full support on E. Let F be a finely closed subset of E. In,this paper, we obtain the characterization of a Levy system of the time changed process of X by a positive continuous additive functional (PCAF in abbreviation) of X having support F, under the assumption that every m-semipolar set of X is m-polar for X. The characterization of the Levy system is in terms of Feller measures, which are intrinsic quantities for the part process of X killed upon leaving E \ F. Along the way, various relations between the entrance law, exit system, Feller measures and the distribution of the starting and ending point of excursions of X away from F are studied. We also show that the time changed process of X is a special standard process having a weak dual and that the mu-semipolar set of Y is mu-polar for Y, where mu is the Revuz measure for the PCAF used in the time change.
Stochastic Volterra Equations for the Local Times of Spectrally Positive Stable Processes

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the evolution dynamics of local times of a spectrally positive stable process in the spatial direction. The main results state that conditioned on the finiteness of the first time at which the local time at zero exceeds a given value, the local times at positive half line are equal in distribution to the unique solution of a stochastic Volterra equation driven by a Poisson random measure whose intensity coincides with the Lévy measure. This helps us to provide not only a simple proof for the Hölder regularity, but also a uniform upper bound for all moments of the Hölder coefficient as well as a maximal inequality for the local times. Moreover, based on this stochastic Volterra equation, we extend the method of duality to establish an exponential-affine representation of the Laplace functional in terms of the unique solution of a nonlinear Volterra integral equation associated with the Laplace exponent of the stable process.

We prove the existence of a value $\alpha_* \in (\frac12,1)$ across which $\mathcal{L}^{\alpha}$ trivialises as follows: for all $\alpha > \alpha_*$ and $\epsilon\geq N^{-c}$ there exists a coupling of $\mathcal{L}^\alpha$ and two occupation sets $\mathcal{B}^{\alpha_\pm}$ of i.i.d. Abstract:In this paper, we consider random dynamical systems formed by concatenating maps acting on the unit interval in an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) fashion. Considered as a stationary Markov process, the random dynamical system possesses a unique stationary measure . We consider a class of non-square-integrable observables , mostly of form , where is a non-recurrent point (in particular a non-periodic point) satisfying some other genericity conditions and, more generally, regularly varying observables with index . The two types of maps we concatenate are a class of piecewise expanding maps and a class of intermittent maps possessing an indifferent fixed point at the origin. Under conditions on the dynamics and , we establish Poisson limit laws, convergence of scaled Birkhoff sums to a stable limit law, and functional stable limit laws in both the annealed and quenched case. The scaling constants for the limit laws for almost every quenched realization are the same as those of the annealed case and determined by . This is in contrast to the scalings in quenched central limit theorems where the centering constants depend in a critical way upon the realization and are not the same for almost every realization.

Abstract:We present a novel theoretical result on estimation of local time and occupation time measure of an {\alpha}-stable Lévy process with {\alpha} in (1, 2). Our approach is based upon computing the conditional expectation of the desired quantities given high frequency data, which is an L^2-optimal statistic by construction. We prove the corresponding stable central limit theorems and discuss a statistical application. In particular, this work extends the results of [Ivanovs and i Podolskij (2021)], which investigated the case of the Brownian motion.

Abstract:Stochastic clocks represent a class of time change methods for incorporating trading activity into continuous-time financial models, with the ability to deal with typical asymmetrical and tail risks in financial returns. In this paper we propose a significant improvement of stochastic clocks for the same objective but without decreasing the number of trades or changing the trading intensity. Our methodology targets any Lévy subordinator, or more generally any process of nonnegative independent increments, and is based on various choices of regulating kernels motivated from repeated averaging. By way of a hyperparameter linked to the degree of regulation, arbitrarily large skewness and excess kurtosis of returns can be easily achieved. Generic-time Laplace transforms, characterizing triplets, and cumulants of the regulated clocks and subsequent mixed models are analyzed, serving purposes ranging from statistical estimation and option price calibration to simulation techniques. Under specified jump--diffusion processes and tempered stable processes, a robust moment-based estimation procedure with profile likelihood is developed and a comprehensive empirical study involving S\&P500 and Bitcoin daily returns is conducted to demonstrate a series of desirable effects of the proposed methods.

The fractional Poisson process and other limit point processes for rare events in infinite ergodic theory

Abstract:We study the process of suitably normalized successive return times to rare events in the setting of infinite-measure preserving dynamical systems. Specifically, we consider small neighborhoods of points whose measure tends to zero. We obtain two types of results. First, we conduct a detailed study of a class of interval maps with a neutral fixed point and we fully characterize the limit processes for all points, highlighting a trichotomy and the emergence of the fractional (possibly compound) Poisson process. This is the first time that these processes have been explicitly identified in this context. Second, we prove an abstract result that offers an explanation for the emergence of the fractional Poisson process, as the unique fixed point of a functional equation, drawing a parallel with the well-established behavior of the Poisson process in finite-measure preserving dynamical systems.

Abstract:We study long time behavior of integrated trawl processes introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen. The trawl processes form a class of stationary infinitely divisible processes, described by an infinitely divisible random measure (Lévy base) and a family of shifts of a fixed set (trawl). We assume that the Lévy base is symmetric and homogeneous and that the trawl set is determined by the trawl function that decays slowly. Depending on the geometry of the trawl set and on the Lévy measure corresponding to the Lévy base we obtain various types of limits in law of the normalized integrated trawl processes for large times. The limit processes are always stable and self-similar with stationary increments. In some cases they have independent increments - they are stable Lévy processes where the index of stability depends on the parameters of the model. We show that stable limits with stability index smaller than 2 may appear even in cases when the underlying Lévy base has all its moments finite. In other cases, the limit process has dependent increments and it may be considered as a new extension of fractional Brownian motion to the class of stable processes.
