Abstract:We consider the permutation analogue of Penney's game for words. Two players, in order, each choose a permutation of length $k\ge3$; then a sequence of independent random values from a continuous distribution is generated, until the relative order of the last $k$ numbers coincides with one of the chosen permutations, making that player the winner.

Abstract:We introduce a guessing game, permutation Wordle, in which a guesser attempts to recover a hidden permutation in $S_n$. In each round, the guesser guesses a permutation (using information from previous rounds) and is told which entries of that permutation are correct. We describe a natural guessing strategy, which we believe to be optimal. We show that the number of permutations this strategy solves in $k+1$ rounds is the Eulerian number $A(n,k)$. We also describe an extension to suited permutations: the setter chooses a permutation in $S_n$ and also a coloring of $[n]$ using $s$ colors. We generalize our strategy, give a recurrence for the number of suited permutations solved in $k+1$ rounds, and relate these numbers to the Eulerian numbers. In the case of two suits, or signed permutations, we also relate these numbers to the Eulerian numbers of type B.

Word length, bias and bijections in Penney's ante

Abstract:Fix two words over the binary alphabet $\{0,1\}$, and generate iid Bernoulli$(p)$ bits until one of the words occurs in sequence. This setup, commonly known as Penney's ante, was popularized by Conway, who found (in unpublished work) a simple formula for the probability that a given word occurs first. We study win probabilities in Penney's ante from an analytic and combinatorial perspective, building on previous results for the case $p = \frac{1}{2}$ and words of the same length. For words of arbitrary lengths, our results bound how large the win probability can be for the longer word. When $p = \frac{1}{2}$ we characterize when a longer word can be statistically favorable, and for $p \neq \frac{1}{2}$ we present a conjecture describing the optimal pairs, which is supported by computer computations. Additionally, we find that Penney's ante often exhibits symmetry under the transformation $p \to 1-p$. We construct new explicit bijections that account for these symmetries, under conditions that can be easily verified by examining auto- and cross-correlations of the words.

Abstract:This paper explores the properties of partitions of roller coaster permutations. A roller coaster permutation is a permutation the alternates between increasing and decreasing a maximum number of times, while its subsequences also alternate between increasing and decreasing a maximum number of times simultaneously. The focus of this paper is on achieving an upper bound for the partition number of a roller coaster permutation of length $n$.

Abstract:We consider a game in which a blindfolded player attempts to set $n$ counters lying on the vertices of a rotating regular $n$-gon table simultaneously to $0$. When the counters count$\pmod{m}$ we simplify the argument of Bar Yehuda, Etzion, and Moran (1993) showing that the player can win if and only if $n = 1$, $m = 1$, or $(n, m) = (p^a, p^b)$ for some prime $p$ and $a, b \in \mathbb{N}$. We broadly generalize the result to the setting where the counters can be permuted by any element of a subset of the symmetric group $S \subseteq S_n$, with the original formulation corresponding to $S = \mathbb{Z}_n$ (rotations of the table).

Abstract:Is there a joint distribution of $n$ random variables over the natural numbers, such that they always form an increasing sequence and whenever you take two subsets of the set of random variables of the same cardinality, their distribution is almost the same? We show that the answer is yes, but that the random variables will have to take values as large as $2^{2^{\dots ^{2^{\Theta\left(\frac{1}{\epsilon}\right)}}}}$, where $\epsilon\leq \epsilon_n$ measures how different the two distributions can be, the tower contains $n-2$ $2$'s and the constants in the $\Theta$ notation are allowed to depend on $n$. This result has an important consequence in game theory: It shows that even though you can define extensive form games that cannot be implemented on players who can tell the time, you can have implementations that approximate the game arbitrarily well.

Abstract:Consider the following game between a random player R and a deterministic player D. There is a pile of n elements at the beginning. The rules for playing are as follows: In each turn of R, if the pile contains exactly m elements, R removes k elements from the pile, where k is independently identically distributed from {1, . . . , m}. In each turn of D, D removes only one element. The winner is the player that, at the end of its round, has no elements remaining. R starts first to play. This short paper shows that Dn, which is defined as the probability of D winning the game (when is initialized with n elements), approaches 1/e when n increases; and more specifically, Dn = dn/n!, where dn is the n-th derangement number.

Abstract:We study scaling limits of random permutations ("permutons") constrained by having fixed densities of a finite number of patterns. We show that the limit shapes are determined by maximizing entropy over permutons with those constraints. In particular, we compute (exactly or numerically) the limit shapes with fixed \hbox{12} density, with fixed \hbox{12} and \hbox{123} densities, with fixed \hbox{12} density and the sum of \hbox{123} and \hbox{213} densities, and with fixed \hbox{123} and \hbox{321} densities. In the last case we explore a particular phase transition. To obtain our results, we also provide a description of permutons using a dynamic construction.

The Ulam-Hammersley problem for multiset permutations

Abstract:We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the longest increasing/non-decreasing subsequences in a random uniform multiset permutation in which each element in {1,...,n} occurs k times, where k may depend on n. This generalizes the famous Ulam-Hammersley problem of the case k=1. The proof relies on poissonization and a connection with variants of the Hammersley-Aldous-Diaconis particle system.

Abstract:We consider a two player simultaneous-move game where the two players each select any permissible $n$-sided die for a fixed integer $n$. A player wins if the outcome of his roll is greater than that of his opponent. Remarkably, for $n>3$, there is a unique Nash Equilibrium in pure strategies. The unique Nash Equilibrium is for each player to throw the Standard $n$-sided die, where each side has a different number. Our proof of uniqueness is constructive. We introduce an algorithm with which, for any nonstandard die, we may generate another die that beats it.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the structure of a special class of permutations known as roller coaster permutations, first introduced by Ahmed & Snevily (2013). A roller coaster permutation is described as, a permutation that maximizes the total switches from ascending to descending, or visa versa, for the permutation as well as all of its subpermutations, simultaneously. This paper looks at the structure of these permutations, particularly the alternating structure, what the entires of these permutations can look like, we then introduce a notion of a condition stronger than alternating that we shall refer to as recursively alternating.

Abstract:A popular puzzle TOP-SPIN consists of a permutation of 20 numbered disks on an oval track, with a tumstile capable of reversing a string of 4 consecutive disks. The goal is to sort the disks into identity permutation using reversals. We consider the more general case of sorting n element permutations with a tumstile of size k.The problem of computing the reversal distances is of considerable importance in reconstructing the evolutionary history of the genome. The minimum reversal sequence sorting the one genome to another corresponds to the most likely evolutionary path between them.We give a complete solution for all n and k, of the number of equivalence classes of n-permutations under k-reversal, for both permutations and circular permutations. We also prove the upper and lower bounds on the reversal distances between two permutations.

Abstract:Random permutations with distribution conditionally uniform given the set of record values can be generated in a unified way, coherently for all values of $n$. Our central example is a two-parameter family of random permutations that are conditionally uniform given the counts of upper and lower records. This family interpolates between two versions of Ewens' distribution. We discuss characterisations of the conditionally uniform permutations, their asymptotic properties, constructions and relations to random partitions.

Abstract:We consider two games between two players Ann and Ben who build a word together by adding alternatively a letter at the end of a shared word. In the nonrepetitive game, Ben wins the game if he can create a square of length at least 4, and Ann wins if she can build an arbitrarily long word without Ben winning. In the erase-repetition game, whenever a square occurs the second part of the square is erased and the goal of Ann is still to build an arbitrarily long word (Ben simply wants to limit the size of the word in this game). Grytczuk, Kozik, and Micek showed that Ann has a winning strategy for the nonrepetitive game if the alphabet is of size at least 6 and for the erase-repetition game if the alphabet is of size at least 8. In this article, we lower these bounds to respectively 4 and 6. The bound obtained by Grytczuk et al. relied on the so-called entropy compression and the previous bound by Pegden relied on some particular version of the Lovász Local Lemma. We recently introduced a counting argument that can be applied to the same set of problems as entropy compression or the Lovász Local Lemma and we use our method here. For these two games, we know that Ben has a winning strategy when the alphabet is of size at most 3, so our result for the nonrepetitive game is optimal, but we are not able to close the gap for the erase-repetition game.

Abstract:Define $S_n(R;T)$ to be the number of permutations on $n$ letters which avoid all patterns in the set $R$ and contain each pattern in the multiset $T$ exactly once. In this paper we enumerate $S_n(\{\alpha\};\{\beta\})$ and $S_n(\emptyset;\{\alpha,\beta\})$ for all $\alpha \neq \beta \in S_3$. The results for $S_n(\{\alpha\};\{\beta\})$ follow from two papers by Mansour and Vainshtein.

Abstract:The main theme of this paper is the enumeration of the occurrence of a pattern in words and permutations. We mainly focus on asymptotic properties of the sequence $f_r^v(k,n),$ the number of $n$-array $k$-ary words that contain a given pattern $v$ exactly $r$ times. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of the random variable $X_n,$ the number of pattern occurrences in a random $n$-array word. The two topics are closely related through the identity $P(X_n=r) = $ $\frac{1}{k^n}f_r^v(k,n).$ In particular, we show that for any $r\geq 0,$ the Stanley-Wilf sequence $\bigl(f_r^v(k,n)\bigr)^{1/n}$ converges to a limit independent of $r,$ and determine the value of the limit. We then obtain several limit theorems for the distribution of $X_n,$ including a CLT, large deviation estimates, and the exact growth rate of the entropy of $X_n.$ Furthermore, we introduce a concept of weak avoidance and link it to a certain family of non-product measures on words that penalize pattern occurrences but do not forbid them entirely. We analyze this family of probability measures in a small parameter regime, where the distributions can be understood as a perturbation of a uniform measure. Finally, we extend some of our results for words, including the one regarding the equivalence of the limits of the Stanley-Wilf sequences, to pattern occurrences in permutations.

Abstract:We construct a Parrondo's game using discrete-time quantum walks (DTQWs). Two losing games are represented by two different coin operators. By mixing the two coin operators UA(αA, βA, γA) and UB(αB, βB, γB), we may win the game. Here, we mix the two games in position instead of time. With a number of selections of the parameters, we can win the game with sequences ABB, ABBB, etc. If we set βA = 45°, γA = 0, αB = 0, βB = 88°, we find game 1 with [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] will win and get the most profit. If we set αA = 0, βA = 45°, αB = 0, βB = 88° and game 2 with [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] will win most. Game 1 is equivalent to game 2 with changes in sequences and steps. But at large enough steps, the game will lose at last. Parrondo's paradox does not exist in classical situation with our model.

Abstract:We consider a few special cases of the more general question: How many permutations $\pi\in\mathcal{S}_n$ have the property that $\pi^2$ has $j$ descents for some $j$? In this paper, we first enumerate Grassmannian permutations $\pi$ by the number of descents in $\pi^2$. We then consider all permutations whose square has exactly one descent, fully enumerating when the descent is "small" and providing a lower bound in the general case. Finally, we enumerate permutations whose square or cube has the maximum number of descents, and finish the paper with a few future directions for study.
