Abstract:Following the analogies between knots and primes, 3-manifolds and number rings in arithmetic topology, we show a topological analogue of the Hasse norm principle for finite cyclic coverings of 3-manifolds, which was originally stated for finite cyclic extensions of number fields.

Abstract:Given an arithmetic lattice of the unitary group U(3,1) arising from a hermitian form over a CM-field, we show that all unitary representations of U(3,1) with nonzero cohomology contribute to the cohomology of the attached arithmetic complex 3-manifold, at least when we pass to a finite-index subgroup of the given arithmetic lattice.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field, $T$ be an algebraic $k$-torus, $X$ be a smooth $k$-compactification of $T$ and ${\rm Pic}\,\overline{X}$ be the Picard group of $\overline{X}=X\times_k\overline{k}$ where $\overline{k}$ is a fixed separable closure of $k$. Hoshi, Kanai and Yamasaki [HKY22], [HKY23] determined $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})$ for norm one tori $T=R^{(1)}_{K/k}(\mathbb{G}_m)$ and gave a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse norm principle for extensions $K/k$ of number fields with $[K:k]\leq 15$. In this paper, we treat the case where $[K:k]=16$. Among $1954$ transitive subgroups $G=16Tm\leq S_{16}$ $(1\leq m\leq 1954)$ up to conjugacy, we determine $1101$ (resp. $774$, $31$, $37$, $1$, $1$, $9$) cases with $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})=0$ (resp. $Z/2Z$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 2}$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 3}$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 4}$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 6}$, $Z/4Z$) where $G$ is the Galois group of the Galois closure $L/k$ of $K/k$. We see that $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})=0$ implies that the Hasse norm principle holds for $K/k$. In particular, among $22$ primitive $G=16Tm$ cases, i.e. $H\leq G=16Tm$ is maximal with $[G:H]=16$, we determine exactly $6$ cases $(m=178, 708, 1080, 1329, 1654, 1753)$ with $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})\neq 0$ $($$(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 2}$, $Z/2Z$, $(Z/2Z)^{\oplus 2}$, $Z/2Z$, $Z/2Z$, $Z/2Z$). Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse norm principle for $K/k$ with $[K:k]=16$ for $22$ primitive $G=16Tm$ cases. As a consequence of the $22$ primitive $G$ cases, we get the Tamagawa number $\tau(T)=1$, $1/2$, $1/4$ of $T=R^{(1)}_{K/k}(\mathbb{G}_m)$ over a number field $k$ via Ono's formula $\tau(T)=1/|Sha(T)|$ where $Sha(T)$ is the Shafarevich-Tate group of $T$.

Hasse principle for Kummer varieties in the case of generic 2-torsion

Abstract:Conditional on finiteness of relevant Shafarevich--Tate groups, Harpaz and Skorobogatov used Swinnerton-Dyer's descent-fibration method to establish the Hasse principle for Kummer varieties associated to a 2-covering of a principally polarised abelian variety under certain largeness assumptions on its mod 2 Galois image. Their method breaks down however when the Galois image is maximal, due to the possible failure of the Shafarevich--Tate group of quadratic twists of A to have square order. In this work we overcome this obstruction by combining second descent ideas in the spirit of Harpaz and Smith with results on the parity of 2-infinity Selmer ranks in quadratic twist families. This allows Swinnerton-Dyer's method to be successfully applied to K3 surfaces arising as quotients of 2-coverings of Jacobians of genus 2 curves with no rational Weierstrass points.

A Projective Twist on the Hasse Norm Theorem

Abstract:A finite extension of global fields $L/K$ satisfies the Hasse norm principle if any nonzero element of $K$ has the property that it is a norm locally if and only if it is a norm globally. In 1931, Hasse proved that any cyclic extension satisfies the Hasse norm principle, providing a novel approach to extending the local-global principle to equations with degree greater than $2$. In this paper, we introduce the projective Hasse norm principle, generalizing the Hasse norm principle to multiple fields and asking whether a projective line that contains a norm locally in every field must also contain a norm globally in every field. We show that the projective Hasse norm principle is independent from the conjunction of Hasse norm principles in all of the constituent fields in the general case, but that the latter implies the former when the fields are all Galois and independent. We also prove an analogue of the Hasse norm theorem for the projective Hasse norm theorem, namely that the projective Hasse norm principle holds in all cyclic extensions.

Abstract:For any pair of orientable closed hyperbolic $3$--manifolds, this paper shows that any isomorphism between the profinite completions of their fundamental groups witnesses a bijective correspondence between the Zariski dense $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Q}^{\mathtt{ac}})$--representations of their fundamental groups, up to conjugacy; moreover, corresponding pairs of representations have identical invariant trace fields and isomorphic invariant quaternion algebras. (Here, $\mathbb{Q}^{\mathtt{ac}}$ denotes an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$.) Next, assuming the $p$--adic Borel regulator injectivity conjecture for number fields, this paper shows that uniform lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ with isomorphic profinite completions have identical invariant trace fields, isomorphic invariant quaternion algebras, identical covolume, and identical arithmeticity.

Abstract:We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the Hasse norm principle for field extensions $K/k$ when the Galois groups ${\rm Gal}(L/k)$ of the Galois closure $L/k$ of $K/k$ are isomorphic to the Mathieu group $M_{11}$ of degree $11$ of order $7920$ or the Janko group $J_1$ of order $175560$ by determining $H^1(k,{\rm Pic}\, \overline{X})=0$ or $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ for norm one tori $T=R^{(1)}_{K/k}(\mathbb{G}_m)$ with a smooth $k$-compactification $X$ and $\overline{X}=X\times_k\overline{k}$. The result gives a first step towards understanding the all pictures of the Hasse norm principle for the $26$ sporadic simple groups.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and let $d\in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$. In this paper, following the analogy between knots and primes, we study the $p$-torsion growth in a compatible system of $(\mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z})^d$-covers of 3-manifolds and establish several analogues of Cuoco--Monsky's multivariable versions of Iwasawa's class number formula. Our main goal is to establish the Cuoco--Monsky type formula for branched covers of links in rational homology 3-spheres. In addition, we prove the precise formula over integral homology 3-spheres prompted by Greenberg's conjecture. We also obtain results on reduced Alexander polynomials and on the Betti number periodicity. Furthermore, we investigate the twisted Whitehead links in $S^3$ and point out that the Iwasawa $\mu$-invariant of a $\mathbb{Z}_p^{\,2}$-cover can be an arbitrary non-negative integer. We also calculate the Iwasawa $\mu$ and $\lambda$-invariants of the Alexander polynomials of all links in Rolfsen's table.

Abstract:This article contains a proof of the fact that, under certain mild technical conditions, the action of the automorphism group of a cyclic 3-manifold cover of the type SxR, where S is a compact surface, yields a compact quotient. This result is then immediately applied to extend a theorem on the fiberings over the circle of certain compact 3-manifolds which are torus sums. As a corollary, I prove the validity of the conditional main theorem in my article titled "A fibering theorem for 3-manifolds", which appeared in the Journal of Groups, Complexity, Cryptology in 2021 and its subsequent erratum. This paper also furnishes a proof of the irreducibility of the summands of compact 3-manifolds which are torus sums and irreducible, and a proof of the interesting observation that a compact connected orientable 3-manifold whose fundamental group contains a subnormal subgroup of infinite index is the connected sum of an irreducible compact 3-manifold with (finitely many) 3-balls.

Abstract:In this article, we study the existence of tautological families on a Zariski open set of the coarse moduli space parametrizing certain Galois covers over projective spaces. More specifically, let ($1$) $\mathscr{H}_{n.r.d}$ (resp. $M_{n,r,d}$) be the stack (resp. coarse moduli) parametrizing smooth simple cyclic covers of degree $r$ over the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ branched along a divisor of degree $rd \geq 4$, and ($2$) $\mathscr{H}_{1,3,d_1,d_2}$ (resp. $M_{1,3,d_1,d_2}$) be the stack (resp. coarse moduli) of smooth cyclic triple covers over $\mathbb{P}^1$ with $2d_1-d_2 \geq 4$ and $2d_2-d_1 \geq 4$. In the former case, we show that such a family exists if and only if $\textrm{gcd}(rd, n+1) \mid d$ while in the latter case, we show that it always exists. We further show that even when such a family exists, often it cannot be extended to the open locus of objects without extra automorphisms. The existence of tautological families on a Zariski open set of its coarse moduli can be interpreted in terms of rationality of the stack if the coarse moduli space is rational. Combining our results with known results on the rationality of the coarse moduli of points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and the coarse moduli of plane curves, we determine the rationality of $\mathscr{H}_{1,r,d}$ (resp. $\mathscr{H}_{2,r,d}$) for $rd \geq 4$ (resp. $rd\geq 49$). On the other hand $\mathscr{H}_{1,3,d_{1},d_{2}}$ is unirational, and we show that its coarse moduli $M_{1,3,d_1,d_2}$ is unirational and fibred over a rational base by homogeneous varieties which are rational if $\textrm{char}(\mathbb{k}) = 0$. Our study is motivated by the work of Gorchinskiy and Viviani on the moduli of hyperelliptic curves.

Abstract:Given a branched cover of manifolds, one can lift homeomorphisms along the cover to obtain a (virtual) homomorphism between mapping class groups. Following a question of Margalit-Winarski, we study the injectivity of this lifting map in the case of $3$-manifolds. We show that in contrast to the case of surfaces, the lifting map is generally not injective for most regular branched covers of $3$-manifolds. This includes the double cover of $S^3$ branched over the unlink, which generalizes the hyperelliptic branched cover of $S^2$. In this case, we find a finite normal generating set for the kernel of the lifting map.

Abstract:Attaching a 2-handle to a genus two or greater boundary component of a 3-manifold is a natural generalization of Dehn filling a torus boundary component. We prove that there is an interesting relationship between an essential surface in a sutured 3-manifold, the number of intersections between the boundary of the surface and one of the sutures, and the cocore of the 2-handle in the manifold after attaching a 2-handle along the suture. We use this result to show that tunnels for tunnel number one knots or links in any 3-manifold can be isotoped to lie on a branched surface corresponding to a certain taut sutured manifold hierarchy of the knot or link exterior. In a subsequent paper, we use the theorem to prove that band sums satisfy the cabling conjecture, and to give new proofs that unknotting number one knots are prime and that genus is superadditive under band sum. To prove the theorem, we introduce band taut sutured manifolds and prove the existence of band taut sutured manifold hierarchies.

Abstract:A 3-manifold M is said to have Property C if the degrees of finite coverings over M are determined by the manifolds. Thurston asked the following questions: is there a real-valued invariant of 3-manifolds with a certain covering property, and which 3-manifolds have Property C? For geometric manifolds the conjecture is that M has Property C if and only if it is not covered by (surface) x S-1 or a torus bundle over S-1. With the aid of the Gromov norm, the conjecture is quickly reduced to the case of graph manifolds.In this paper we define a new invariant omega(M) for graph manifolds. It has the covering property that if N is a d-fold covering space of M, then omega(N) = d omega(M). Thus in the generic case, when omega(M) not equal 0, the manifold M has Property C. We also use the methods to prove two other results. The first classifies all geometric manifolds that admit non-trivial self-coverings. The second solves a problem of Gonzales-Acuna and Whitten about the cohopficity of 3-manifold groups, and determines all closed geometric manifolds that have cohopfian fundamental groups.

Abstract:We show that if a closed oriented $n$-manifold $M$ has a non-trivial cohomology class of even degree $k$, whose all pullbacks to products of type $S^1\times N$ vanish, then the topological complexity $\mathrm{TC}(M)$ is at least $6$, if $n$ is odd, and at least $7$ or $9$, if $n$ is even. These bounds extend and improve a result of Mescher and apply for instance to negatively curved manifolds and to connected sums with at least one such summand. In fact, better bounds are obtained due to the non-vanishing of the Gromov norm. As a consequence, in dimension four, we completely determine the topological complexity of these connected sums, namely we show that it is equal to its maximum value nine. Furthermore, we discuss realisation of degree two homology classes by tori, and show how to construct non-realisable classes out of realisable classes in connected sums. The examples of this paper will quite often be aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have trivial center and connected sums. We thus discuss the possible relation between the maximum topological complexity $2n+1$ and the triviality of the center for aspherical $n$-manifolds and their connected sums.

$h$-Principles for curves and knots of constant torsion

Abstract:We prove that curves of constant torsion satisfy the $C^1$-dense h-principle in the space of immersed curves in Euclidean space. In particular, there exists a knot of constant torsion in each isotopy class. Our methods, which involve convex integration and degree theory, quickly establish these results for curves of constant curvature as well.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a rational prime, $q>1$ a power of $p$ and $F=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. For an integer $d\geq 2$, let $D$ be a central division algebra over $F$ of dimension $d^2$ which is split at $\infty$ and has invariant $\mathrm{inv}_x(D)=1/d$ at any place $x$ of $F$ at which $D$ ramifies. Let $X^D$ be the Drinfeld--Stuhler variety, the coarse moduli scheme of the algebraic stack over $F$ classifying $\mathscr{D}$-elliptic sheaves. In this paper, we establish various arithmetic properties of $\mathscr{D}$-elliptic sheaves to give an explicit criterion for the non-existence of rational points of $X^D$ over a finite extension of $F$ of degree $d$. As an application, for $d=2$, we present explicit infinite families of quadratic extensions of $F$ over which the curve $X^D$ violates the Hasse principle.

Abstract:We introduce holed cone structures on 3-manifolds to generalize cone structures. In the same way as a cone structure, a holed cone structure induces the holonomy representation. We consider the deformation space consisting of the holed cone structures on a 3-manifold whose holonomy representations are irreducible. This deformation space for positive cone angles is a covering space on a reasonable subspace of the character variety.

Abstract:In this article, we establish the compatibility between norms and transfers in motivic homotopy theory. More precisely, we construct norm functors for motivic spaces equipped with various flavours of transfer. This yields a norm monoidal refinement of the infinite $\mathbb{P}^1$-delooping machine of Elmanto-Hoyois-Khan-Sosnilo-Yakerson. We apply this refinement to construct a normed algebra structure on the very effective Hermitian $\mathrm{K}$-theory spectrum.

Abstract:Given a tuple of holomorphic differentials on a Riemann surface, one can define a Higgs bundle in the Hitchin section and a natural symmetric pairing of the Higgs bundle. We study whether a Higgs bundle of rank 3 in the Hitchin section has a compatible harmonic metric when the spectral curve is a 2-sheeted branched covering of the Riemann surface. In particular, we give a condition for Higgs bundles in the Hitchin section on $\mathbb{C}$ or $\mathbb{C}^*$ to have compatible harmonic metrics.
