Abstract:Movements for social change are often tied to a particular locale. This makes Augmented Reality (AR), which changes how people perceive their surroundings, a promising technology for social justice. Site-specific AR empowers activists to re-tell the story of a place, with or without permission of its owner. It has been used, for example, to reveal hidden histories, re-imagine problematic monuments, and celebrate minority cultures. However, challenges remain concerning technological ownership and accessibility, scalability, sustainability, and navigating collaborations with marginalized communities and across disciplinary boundaries. This half-day workshop at CHI 2024 seeks to bring together an interdisciplinary group of activists, computer scientists, designers, media scholars, and more to identify opportunities and challenges across domains. To anchor the discussion, participants will each share one example of an artifact used in speculating, designing, and/or delivering site-specific AR experiences. This collection of artifacts will inaugurate an interactive database that can inspire a new wave of activists to leverage AR for social justice.

Abstract:Dear Visitor and Charleston Reconstructed were location-based augmented reality (AR) experiences created between 2018 and 2020 dealing with two controversial monument sites in the US. The projects were motivated by the ability of AR to 1) link layers of context to physical sites in ways that are otherwise difficult or impossible and 2) to visualize changes to physical spaces, potentially inspiring changes to the spaces themselves. We discuss the projects' motivations, designs, and deployments. We reflect on how physical changes to the projects' respective sites radically altered their outcomes, and we describe lessons for future work in location-based AR, particularly for projects in contested spaces.

Abstract:In this position paper, we explore the power of storytelling and its connection to place through the use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology, particularly within the context of Thámien Ohlone history on the Santa Clara University campus. To do this, we utilized SLAM and 8th Wall to create virtual, location-based experiences that geolocate tribal stories at present-day sites, showcase the living culture of the Thámien Ohlone tribe, and advocate for physical markers that could exist to recognize their story. When doing so, we made sure to select locations that added to the story each stop tells to serve as our anchors. Our research then investigates both the social and technical considerations involved in selecting anchors for AR experiences, using the Thámien Ohlone AR Tour as a case study.

Abstract:The 2nd Joint Workshop on Cross Reality (JWCR'24), organized as part of ISMAR 2024, seeks to explore the burgeoning field of Cross Reality (CR), which encompasses the seamless integration and transition between various points on the reality-virtuality continuum (RVC) such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Virtuality (AV), and Augmented Reality (AR). This hybrid workshop aims to build upon the foundation laid by the inaugural JWCR at ISMAR 2023, which successfully unified diverse CR research communities. The workshop will address key themes including CR visualization, interaction, user behavior, design, development, engineering, and collaboration. CR Visualization focuses on creating and displaying spatial data across the RVC, enabling users to navigate and interpret information fluidly. CR Interaction delves into natural user engagements using gestures, voice commands, and other advanced techniques to enhance immersion. The study of CR User Behavior and Experience investigates how users perceive and interact within these hybrid environments. Furthermore, CR Design and Development emphasizes creating effective CR applications using innovative processes and tools, while CR Collaboration examines methods for fostering teamwork in mixed reality settings.

Towards Security and Privacy for Multi-user Augmented Reality: Foundations with End Users

Abstract:Immersive augmented reality (AR) technologies are becoming a reality. Prior works have identified security and privacy risks raised by these technologies, primarily considering individual users or AR devices. However, we make two key observations: (1) users will not always use AR in isolation, but also in ecosystems of other users, and (2) since immersive AR devices have only recently become available, the risks of AR have been largely hypothetical to date. To provide a foundation for understanding and addressing the security and privacy challenges of emerging AR technologies, grounded in the experiences of real users, we conduct a qualitative lab study with an immersive AR headset, the Microsoft HoloLens. We conduct our study in pairs-22 participants across 11 pairs-wherein participants engage in paired and individual (but physically co-located) HoloLens activities. Through semi-structured interviews, we explore participants' security, privacy, and other concerns, raising key findings. For example, we find that despite the HoloLens's limitations, participants were easily immersed, treating virtual objects as real (e.g., stepping around them for fear of tripping). We also uncover numerous security, privacy, and safety concerns unique to AR (e.g., deceptive virtual objects misleading users about the real world), and a need for access control among users to manage shared physical spaces and virtual content embedded in those spaces. Our findings give us the opportunity to identify broader lessons and key challenges to inform the design of emerging single- and multi-user AR technologies.
Multimodal 3D Fusion and In-Situ Learning for Spatially Aware AI

Abstract:Seamless integration of virtual and physical worlds in augmented reality benefits from the system semantically "understanding" the physical environment. AR research has long focused on the potential of context awareness, demonstrating novel capabilities that leverage the semantics in the 3D environment for various object-level interactions. Meanwhile, the computer vision community has made leaps in neural vision-language understanding to enhance environment perception for autonomous tasks. In this work, we introduce a multimodal 3D object representation that unifies both semantic and linguistic knowledge with the geometric representation, enabling user-guided machine learning involving physical objects. We first present a fast multimodal 3D reconstruction pipeline that brings linguistic understanding to AR by fusing CLIP vision-language features into the environment and object models. We then propose "in-situ" machine learning, which, in conjunction with the multimodal representation, enables new tools and interfaces for users to interact with physical spaces and objects in a spatially and linguistically meaningful manner. We demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system through two real-world AR applications on Magic Leap 2: a) spatial search in physical environments with natural language and b) an intelligent inventory system that tracks object changes over time. Abstract:This workshop aimed for a deeper exploration of trust and acceptance in human-robot interaction (HRI) from a multidisciplinary perspective including robots' capabilities of sensing and perceiving other agents, the environment, and human-robot dynamics. The workshop was held online in conjunction with IEEE RO-MAN 2021 (see https://ro-man2021.org/). Three invited speakers and six position papers analysed/discussed different aspects of human-robot interaction that can affect, enhance, undermine, or recover humans' trust in robots, such as the use of social cues or behaviour transparency. Abstract:This position paper presents the AR Language Map, a speculative artifact designed to enhance understanding of linguistic justice among middle and high school students through augmented reality (AR) that allows students to map their linguistic experiences. Through a social justice-oriented academic outreach program aimed at linguistically, economically, and racially minoritized students, academic concepts on language, culture, race, and power are introduced to California middle school and high school students. The curriculum has activities for each lesson plan drawn from students' culturally relevant experiences. By enabling interactive exploration of linguistic justice, this tool aims to foster empathy, challenge linguistic racism, and valorize linguistic diversity. We discuss its conceptualization within the broader context of AR in social justice education. The AR Language Map not only deepens students' understanding of these critical issues but also enables them to become co-creators of their learning experiences.

Abstract:Digital and interactive technologies are becoming increasingly embedded in everyday lives of people around the world. Application of technologies such as real-time, context-aware, and interactive technologies; augmented and immersive realities; social media; and location-based services has been particularly evident in urban environments where technological and sociocultural infrastructures enable easier deployment and adoption as compared to non-urban areas. There has been growing consumer demand for new forms of experiences and services enabled through these emerging technologies. We call this ambient media, as the media is embedded in the natural human living environment. The 8th Semantic Ambient Media Workshop Experience (SAME) Proceedings where based on a collaboration between the SEACHI Workshop Smart Cities for Better Living with HCI and UX, which has been organized by UX Indonesia and was held in conjunction with Computers and Human-Computer Interaction (CHI) 2016 in San Jose, CA USA. Abstract:Conversational Agents are increasingly integrated into our daily routines, assisting us with various tasks, from simple commands such as scheduling events to more complex conversational search interactions. Such conversational search systems are traditionally evaluated with word-overlap metrics such as F1 score and accuracy. The full-day workshop on Search-Oriented Conversational Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) at CHIIR 2024 explored the evaluation of conversational search systems from the user's perspective. This interactive workshop included multiple panel discussions and working groups focused on developing and discussing innovative, user-centered evaluation methods for these systems. The Clarkston AR Gateways Project: Anchoring Refugee Presence and Narratives in a Small Town

Abstract:This paper outlines the Clarkston AR Gateways Project, a speculative process and artifact entering its second phase, where Augmented Reality (AR) will be used to amplify the diverse narratives of Clarkston, Georgia's refugee community. Focused on anchoring their stories and presence into the town's physical and digital landscapes, the project employs a participatory co-design approach, engaging directly with community members. This placemaking effort aims to uplift refugees by teaching them AR development skills that help them more autonomously express and elevate their voices through public art. The result is hoped to be AR experiences that not only challenge prevailing narratives but also celebrate the tapestry of cultures in the small town. This work is supported through AR's unique affordance for users to situate their experiences as interactive narratives within public spaces. Such site-specific AR interactive stories can encourage interactions within those spaces that shift how they are conceived, perceived, and experienced. This process of refugee-driven AR creation reflexively alters the space and affirms their presence and agency. The project's second phase aims to establish a model adaptable to diverse, refugee-inclusive communities, demonstrating how AR storytelling can be a powerful tool for cultural orientation and celebration.

The full-day workshop consisted of informal discussions, invited talks and peer-reviewed technical talks describing recent research contributions to the area of Digital Rights Management. As in previous years, the DRM workshop provided an interdisciplinary bridge between different research areas that span the landscape of DRM, including cryptography, system security, law and economy. This year we were delighted to have two invited talks, one covering legal aspects of DRM, given by Bruce Boyden from the Marquette University Law School, and one covering technical aspects, given by Brendan Traw from Intel. This year’s workshop continues on its original mission of stimulating collaboration and cross-pollination between the Security & Privacy and Artificial Intelligence research communities. We are delighted to once again be co-located with the premier ACM Computer and Communication Security (CCS 2011) conference. The call for papers attracted 18 high quality submissions spanning North & South America, Europe, the Middle East & Asia, and representing both academia and industry. Of these submissions, the Program Committee accepted 7 research papers and 3 position papers, making for a wonderful program that will bring together leading researchers with backgrounds in both Security & Privacy and AI. This year’s ACM AISec will cover such topics as identifying workers hired online for web service abuse, malware and malicious webpage detection, probabilistic attack planning, and intrusion analysis. In addition the program includes an exciting keynote by Prof. Dawn Song of UC Berkeley who is an internationally recognized leader in Security & Privacy research with extensive experience applying state-of-the-art techniques from Machine Learning to exposing vulnerabilities in real-world systems and to developing robust defenses. These proceedings feature an invited paper, Adversarial Machine Learning, following from the AISec’2010 keynote delivered by Prof. J. D. Tygar (UC Berkeley), whose work investigates Machine Learning through the lens of Security & Privacy, an important topic also covered by one of this year’s position papers.
ARtivism: AR-Enabled Accessible Public Art and Advocacy

Abstract:Activism can take a multitude of forms, including protests, social media campaigns, and even public art. The uniqueness of public art lies in that both the act of creation and the artifacts created can serve as activism. Furthermore, public art is often site-specific and can be created with (e.g., commissioned murals) or without permission (e.g., graffiti art) of the site's owner. However, the majority of public art is inaccessible to blind and low vision people, excluding them from political and social action. In this position paper, we build on a prior crowdsourced mural description project and describe the design of one potential process artifact, ARtivism, for making public art more accessible via augmented reality. We then discuss tensions that may occur at the intersection of public art, activism, and technology.

Abstract:The First Search Futures Workshop, in conjunction with the Fourty-sixth European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR) 2024, looked into the future of search to ask questions such as: • How can we harness the power of generative AI to enhance, improve and re-imagine Information Retrieval (IR)? • What are the principles and fundamental rights that the field of Information Retrieval should strive to uphold? • How can we build trustworthy IR systems in light of Large Language Models and their ability to generate content at super human speeds? • What new applications and affordances does generative AI offer and enable, and can we go back to the future, and do what we only dreamed of previously? The workshop started with seventeen lightning talks from a diverse set speakers. Instead of conventional paper presentations, the lightning talks provided a rapid and concise overview of ideas, allowing speakers to share critical points or novel concepts quickly. This format was designed to encourage discussion and introduce a wide range of topics within a short period, thereby maximising the exchange of ideas and ensuring that participants could gain insights into various future search areas without the deep dive typically required in longer presentations. This report, co-authored by the workshop's organisers and its participants, summarises the talks and discussions. This report aims to provide the broader IR community with the insights and ideas discussed and debated during the workshop - and to provide a platform for future discussion. Date: 24 March 2024. Abstract:Augmented, virtual and mixed reality technologies offer new ways of interacting with digital media. However, such technologies are not well explored for people with different ranges of abilities beyond a few specific navigation and gaming applications. While new standardization activities are investigating accessibility issues with existing AR/VR systems, commercial systems are still confined to specialized hardware and software limiting their widespread adoption among people with disabilities as well as seniors. This proposal takes a novel approach by exploring the application of user model-based personalization for AR/VR systems to improve accessibility. The workshop will be organized by experienced researchers in the field of human computer interaction, robotics control, assistive technology, and AR/VR systems, and will consist of peer reviewed papers and hands-on demonstrations. Keynote speeches and demonstrations will cover latest accessibility research at Microsoft, Google, Verizon and leading universities.

Abstract:Learning space for children with different sensory needs, nowadays, can be interactive, multisensory experiences, designed collaboratively by 1) specialists in special-needs learning, 2) extended realities (XR) technologists, and 3) sensorial diverse children, to provide the motivation, challenge, and development of key skills. While traditional audio and visual sensors in XR are challenging for XR applications to meet the needs of visually and hearing impaired sensorial-diverse children, our research goes a step ahead by integrating sensory technologies including haptic, tactile, kinaesthetic, and olfactory feedback that was well received by the children. Our research also demonstrates the protocols for 1) development of a suite of XR-applications; 2) methods for experiments and evaluation; and 3) tangible improvements in XR learning experience. Our research considered and is in compliance with the ethical and social implications and has the necessary approval for accessibility, user safety, and privacy.

Working in Extended Reality in the Wild: Worker and Bystander Experiences of XR Virtual Displays in Real-World Settings

Abstract:Although access to sufficient screen space is crucial to knowledge work, workers often find themselves with limited access to display infrastructure in remote or public settings. While virtual displays can be used to extend the available screen space through extended reality (XR) head-worn displays (HWD), we must better understand the implications of working with them in public settings from both users' and bystanders' viewpoints. To this end, we conducted two user studies. We first explored the usage of a hybrid AR display across real-world settings and tasks. We focused on how users take advantage of virtual displays and what social and environmental factors impact their usage of the system. A second study investigated the differences between working with a laptop, an AR system, or a VR system in public. We focused on a single location and participants performed a predefined task to enable direct comparisons between the conditions while also gathering data from bystanders. The combined results suggest a positive acceptance of XR technology in public settings and show that virtual displays can be used to accompany existing devices. We highlighted some environmental and social factors. We saw that previous XR experience and personality can influence how people perceive the use of XR in public. In addition, we confirmed that using XR in public still makes users stand out and that bystanders are curious about the devices, yet have no clear understanding of how they can be used.

Abstract:NASA's vision for space exploration stresses the cultivation of human-robotic systems. Similar systems are also envisaged for a variety of hazardous earthbound applications such as urban search and rescue. Recent research has pointed out that to reduce human workload, costs, fatigue driven error and risk, intelligent robotic systems will need to be a significant part of mission design. However, little attention has been paid to joint human-robot teams. Making human-robot collaboration natural and efficient is crucial. In particular, grounding, situational awareness, a common frame of reference and spatial referencing are vital in effective communication and collaboration. Augmented Reality (AR), the overlaying of computer graphics onto the real worldview, can provide the necessary means for a human-robotic system to fulfill these requirements for effective collaboration. This article reviews the field of human-robot interaction and augmented reality, investigates the potential avenues for creating natural human-robot collaboration through spatial dialogue utilizing AR and proposes a holistic architectural design for human-robot collaboration.
