Abstract:To answer the question "Is $10$ a solitary number?", we have established a necessary and sufficient condition on primes $p$ and $q$ so that $p$ divides $\sigma(q^{2a})$($a\in\mathbb{Z^+}$). Also We have found the form of $q$ whenever $p$ divides $\sigma(q^{2a})$ for $q>p$ . Using these two, we have proved that if $n$ is a friend of $10$ then it is an odd square with at least seven distinct prime factors, $5$ being the least one. Moreover there exists a prime factor $p$ of $n$ such that $2a+1\equiv 0 \pmod f$ where $f$ is the smallest odd positive integer greater than $1$ and less than or equal to $\min\{ 2a+1,p-1\}$ such that $5^{f}\equiv 1 \pmod p$, provided $5^{2a}\mid \mid n$, $a\in \mathbb{Z^+}$. Further, there exist prime factors $p$ and $q$ not necessarily distinct of $n$ such that $p\equiv1 \pmod {10}$ and $q\equiv 1\pmod 6$. Besides, we have proved that if a Fermat prime $F_k$ divides $n$ then $n$ must have a prime factor congruent to $1$ modulo $2F_k$.

Abstract:For each positive integer n , if the sum of the factors of n is divided by n , then the result is called the abundancy index of n . If the abundancy index of some positive integer m equals the abundancy index of n but m is not equal to n , then m and n are called friends. A positive integer with no friends is called solitary. The smallest positive integer that is not known to have a friend and is not known to be solitary is 10. It is not known if the number 6 has odd friends, that is, if odd perfect numbers exist. In a 2007 article, Nielsen proved that the number of nonidentical prime factors in any odd perfect number is at least 9. A 2015 article by Nielsen, which was more complicated and used a computer program that took months to complete, increased the lower bound from 9 to 10. This work applies methods from Nielsen's 2007 article to show that each friend of 10 has at least 10 nonidentical prime factors. This is a formal write-up of results presented at the Southern Africa Mathematical Sciences Association Conference 2023 at the University of Pretoria.

Abstract:Markoff mod-$p$ graphs are conjectured to be connected for all primes $p$. In this paper, we use results of Chen and Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak to confirm the conjecture for all $p > 3.448\cdot10^{392}$. We also provide a method that quickly verifies connectivity for many primes below this bound. In our study of Markoff mod-$p$ graphs we introduce the notion of \emph{maximal divisors} of a number. We prove sharp asymptotic and explicit upper bounds on the number of maximal divisors, which ultimately improves the Markoff graph $p$-bound by roughly 140 orders of magnitude as compared with an approach using all divisors.

Abstract:Let $x$ and $n$ be positive integers. We prove a non-trivial lower bound for $x$, dependant only on $\omega_n$, the number of distinct prime factors of $x^n-1$. By considering the divisibility of $\varphi \mid x^n-1$ for $\varphi \mid n$, we obtain a further refinement. This bound has applications for existence problems relating to primitive elements in finite fields.

Abstract:In this article, we obtain upper bounds on the number of irreducible factors of some classes of polynomials having integer coefficients, which in particular yield some of the well known irreducibility criteria. For devising our results, we use the information about prime factorization of the values taken by such polynomials at sufficiently large integer arguments along with the information about their root location in the complex plane. Further, these techniques are extended to bivariate polynomials over arbitrary fields using non-Archimedean absolute values, yielding extensions of the irreducibility results of M. Ram Murty and S. Weintraub to bivariate polynomials.

Abstract:We establish quantitative lower bounds for the number of primes $p$ such that, for an odd integer $b$, $p - b \leq N$ and $p - b = 2^{k(N) + m} P_k \quad \text{for some } m \geq 0$, where $P_k$ is a product of at most $k$ primes other than 2, for $k \geq 2$. Abstract:Let be the sequence of Fibonacci numbers and, for each positive integer k , let be the set of primes p such that . We prove that the relative density of exists, and we give a formula for in terms of an absolutely convergent series. Furthermore, we give an effective criterion to establish if a given k satisfies , and we provide upper and lower bounds for the counting function of the set of such k 's. As an application of our results, we give a new proof of a lower bound for the counting function of the set of integers of the form , for some positive integer n . Abstract:In this paper, we study the linear independence between the distribution of the number of prime factors of integers and that of the largest prime factors of integers. Respectively, under a restriction on the largest prime factors of integers, we will refine the Erdős-Kac Theorem and Loyd's recent result on Bergelson and Richter's dynamical generalizations of the Prime Number Theorem. At the end, we will show that the analogue of these results holds with respect to the Erdős-Pomerance Theorem as well.

Abstract:We show the primes have level of distribution $66/107\approx 0.617$ using triply well-factorable weights. This gives the highest level of distribution for primes in any setting, improving on the prior record level $3/5=0.60$ of Maynard. We also extend this level to $5/8=0.625$, assuming Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. As applications of the method, we obtain new upper bounds for twin primes and for Goldbach representations of even numbers $a$. For the Goldbach problem, this is the first use of a level of distribution beyond the square-root barrier, and leads to the greatest improvement on the problem since Bombieri-Davenport from 1966. Our proof optimizes the Deshouillers-Iwaniec spectral large sieve estimates, both in the exceptional spectrum and uniformity in the residue $a$, refining Drappeau-Pratt-Radziwill and Assing-Blomer-Li.

Abstract:Zhang has shown there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing two primes. It appears that the current techniques cannot prove that there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing three primes, even if strong conjectures such as the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture are assumed. We show that there are infinitely many intervals of length at most $10^8$ which contain two primes and a number with at most 31 prime factors.

Abstract:Ferrers diagrams are used to visually represent integer partitions. We describe a way to use Ferrers diagrams to uniquely represent integers in terms of their prime factors. This leads to a lower bound on the number of primes less than a given integer, namely $\pi(x) \geq \frac{\lfloor \lg x \rfloor}{\lg (\lfloor \lg x \rfloor + 1)}$ where $\pi(x)$ is the prime counting function and $\lg(x)$ denotes the base 2 logarithm. This results in a new proof of the infinitude of primes.

Abstract:We prove that there exists a universal constant $D$ such that if $p$ is a prime divisor of the index of the Fitting subgroup of a finite group $G$, then the number of conjugacy classes of G is at least $Dp/log_2 p$. Abstract:Servais and Grün used results about linear support for the prime number sequence to obtain upper bounds on the smallest prime in odd perfect numbers. This was extended by Cohen and Hendy who proved that for every there exists an integer such that for any sequence of odd primes, and found minimal values of for , and conjectured minimal values for . We give a new proof of the existence of and the values for . We also show that if we assume that the second Hardy-Littlewood conjecture, for , is true, then we can in a finite number of steps determine numbers, , that give quite close bounds for the values of , namely , and determine the values of for . We also consider the question of whether the values of can be replaced by smaller numbers if we assume that . We will show that if we assume that the first Hardy-Littlewood conjecture is true, then we can determine the minimum such values, , for . We also determine some lower bounds for for . It is well-known that the two Hardy-Littlewood conjectures are mutually exclusive, but we never use both conjectures simultaneously. These results give us the upper bound on the smallest prime in odd perfect numbers, where is the number of distinct primes dividing the odd perfect number. This bound was also found by Cohen and Hendy, but we improve the constants .
