Abstract:We consider the following decision problem: given two simply typed $\lambda$-terms, are they $\beta$-convertible? Equivalently, do they have the same normal form? It is famously non-elementary, but the precise complexity - namely TOWER-complete - is lesser known. One goal of this short paper is to popularize this fact. Our original contribution is to show that the problem stays TOWER-complete when the two input terms belong to Blum and Ong's safe $\lambda$-calculus, a fragment of the simply typed $\lambda$-calculus arising from the study of higher-order recursion schemes. Previously, the best known lower bound for this safe $\beta$-convertibility problem was PSPACE-hardness. Our proof proceeds by reduction from the star-free expression equivalence problem, taking inspiration from the author's work with Pradic on "implicit automata in typed $\lambda$-calculi". These results also hold for $\beta\eta$-convertibility.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a general realizability semantics for the simply typed $\lambda\mu$-calculus. Then, based on this semantics, we derive both weak and strong normalization results for two versions of the $\lambda\mu$-calculus equipped with specific simplification rules. The novelty in our method, in addition to its more systematic approach, lies in its applicability to a broader set of reduction rules. Furthermore, we have obtained a surprising characterization of the typed $\lambda\mu$-terms with the help of our saturation properties.

Abstract:The symmetric $\lambda \mu$-calculus is the $\lambda \mu$-calculus introduced by Parigot in which the reduction rule $\m'$, which is the symmetric of $\mu$, is added. We give arithmetical proofs of some strong normalization results for this calculus. We show (this is a new result) that the $\mu\mu'$-reduction is strongly normalizing for the un-typed calculus. We also show the strong normalization of the $\beta\mu\mu'$-reduction for the typed calculus: this was already known but the previous proofs use candidates of reducibility where the interpretation of a type was defined as the fix point of some increasing operator and thus, were highly non arithmetical.

Abstract:<p>Tse and Zdancewic have formalized the notion of noninterference for Abadi etal.'s DCC in terms of logical relations and given a proof of noninterference byreduction to parametricity of System F. Unfortunately, their proof containserrors in a key lemma that their translation from DCC to System F preserves thelogical relations defined for both calculi. In fact, we have found acounterexample for it. In this article, instead of DCC, we provenoninterference for sealing calculus, a new variant of DCC, by reduction to thebasic lemma of a logical relation for the simply typed lambda-calculus, using afully complete translation to the simply typed lambda-calculus. Fullcompleteness plays an important role in showing preservation of the two logicalrelations through the translation. Also, we investigate relationship amongsealing calculus, DCC, and an extension of DCC by Tse and Zdancewic and showthat the first and the last of the three are equivalent.</p>

Abstract:Parametricity allows the transfer of proofs between different implementations of the same data structure. The lambdaPi-calculus modulo theory is an extension of the lambda-calculus with dependent types and user-defined rewrite rules. It is a logical framework, used to exchange proofs between different proof systems. We define an interpretation of theories of the lambdaPi-calculus modulo theory, inspired by parametricity. Such an interpretation allows to transfer proofs for free between theories that feature the notions of proposition and proof, when the source theory can be embedded into the target theory.

Abstract:In the standard presentations of $\lambda $-calculus (e.g., in [H. Barendregt, The Lambda Calculus, Its Syntax and Semantics, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1981] or [J. R. Hindley, B. Lecher, J. P. Seldin, Introduction to Combinatory Logic, Cambridge Univ. Press, London, 1972]) the operation of substitution is defined as a primitive operation and used in the definition of convertibility. In the present paper we show that the axioms for the theory of lambda-conversion can be simplified in such a way that substitution is not needed at all, as it is reduced to a more elementary operation of replacement without giving up the intuitive simplicity of the lambda-notation. This is achieved by making essential use of the properties of substitution in formulating the axiom system. Also, another unusual axiom system will be presented which uses renaming that replaces every (free or bound) occurrence of a variable by another. Finally, we give the outline of a program written in PL/I that computes the normal form (if any) of $\lambda $-terms by using our axioms.

Kalmár-style constructive completeness proofs for classical positive propositional calculi

Abstract:We shall settle the completeness of some classical positive propositional calculi (positive propositional calculi in which the so-called Peirce's law holds) by resorting to a close adaptation of Kalmar's completeness proof procedure. First of all, we shall employ this adaptation to establish the completeness of the most familiar axiomatic characterization of the classical logic of material implication and disjunction. Next, we shall demonstrate that the completeness of the so-called classical positive propositional calculus can be proved either through essentially the same adaptation of Kalmar's procedure or as an immediate consequence of the conjunction of our first result and the circumstance of each positive formula being reducible to a syntactically and semantically equivalent one exhibiting a particular normal form. Finally, by defining disjunction in terms of material implication and so mirroring the classical calculus of material implication and disjunction in the classical implicative calculus, the completeness of the latter, as well as the completeness of the classical calculus of material implication and conjunction, will be shown to follow from the completeness of the former in quite simple and direct ways. It is worth noting that all these completeness proofs will be constructive, that is to say, we can easily extract from each of them an effective method for producing formal deductions of all theses of the axiomatic system concerned.

Simply-typed constant-domain modal lambda calculus I: distanced beta reduction and combinatory logic

Abstract:A system $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is developed that combines modal logic and simply-typed lambda calculus, and that generalizes the system studied by Montague and Gallin. Whereas Montague and Gallin worked with Church's simple theory of types, the system $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is developed in the typed base theory most commonly used today, namely the simply-typed lambda calculus. Further, the system $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is controlled by a parameter $\upsilon$ which allows more options for state types and state variables than is present in Montague and Gallin. A main goal of the paper is to establish the basic metatheory of $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$: (i) a completeness theorem is proven for $\beta\eta$-reduction, and (ii) an Andrews-like characterization of Henkin models in terms of combinatory logic is given; and this involves a distanced version of $\beta$-reduction and a $\mathsf{BCKW}$-like basis rather than $\mathsf{SKI}$-like basis. Further, conservation of the maximal system $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\omega}$ over $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is proven, and expressibility of $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\omega}$ in $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\upsilon}$ is proven; thus these modal logics are highly expressive. Similar results are proven for the relation between $\boldsymbol\lambda_{\omega}$ and $\boldsymbol\lambda$, the corresponding ordinary simply-typed lambda calculus. This answers a question of Zimmerman in the simply-typed setting. In a companion paper this is extended to Church's simple theory of types.

Abstract:We prove a characterization of first-order string-to-string transduction via $\lambda$-terms typed in non-commutative affine logic that compute with Church encoding, extending the analogous known characterization of star-free languages. We show that every first-order transduction can be computed by a $\lambda$-term using a known Krohn-Rhodes-style decomposition lemma. The converse direction is given by compiling $\lambda$-terms into two-way reversible planar transducers. The soundness of this translation involves showing that the transition functions of those transducers live in a monoidal closed category of diagrams in which we can interpret purely affine $\lambda$-terms. One challenge is that the unit of the tensor of the category in question is not a terminal object. As a result, our interpretation does not identify $\beta$-equivalent terms, but it does turn $\beta$-reductions into inequalities in a poset-enrichment of the category of diagrams.

Abstract:λμ-calculus is introduced by Parigot as an extension isomorphic to an alternative presentation of classical natural deduction. Since then, many properties of it have been studied and, in particular, it does not enjoy the separation property shown by David and Py. Λμ-calculus is proposed by de Groote and developed by Saurin as an extension of λμ-calculus Saurin demonstrates that the separation property holds for the Λμ -calculus. Bakel gives a characterization of strong normalization of λμ-calculus in the view of intersection type. In this paper, we will extend the intersection type assignment system to the Λμ -calculus, and show that it characterizes those terms that are strongly normalizing. The system satisfies the subject reduction and subject expansion properties.

Abstract:We review the close relationship between abstract machines for (call-by-name or call-by-value) lambda-calculi (extended with Felleisen's C) and sequent calculus, reintroducing on the way Curien-Herbelin's syntactic kit expressing the duality of computation. We use this kit to provide a term language for a presentation of LK (with conjunction, disjunction, and negation), and to transcribe cut elimination as (non confluent) rewriting. A key slogan here, which may appear here in print for the first time, is that commutative cut elimination rules are explicit substitution propagation rules. We then describe the focalised proof search discipline (in the classical setting), and narrow down the language and the rewriting rules to a confluent calculus (a variant of the second author's focalising system L). We then define a game of patterns and counterpatterns, leading us to a fully focalised finitary syntax for a synthetic presentation of classical logic, that provides a quotient on (focalised) proofs, abstracting out the order of decomposition of negative connectives.

Some General Completeness Results for Propositionally Quantified Modal Logics

Abstract:We study the completeness problem for propositionally quantified modal logics on quantifiable general frames, where the admissible sets are the propositions the quantifiers can range over and expressible sets of worlds are admissible, and Kripke frames, where the quantifiers range over all sets of worlds. We show that any normal propositionally quantified modal logic containing all instances of the Barcan scheme is strongly complete with respect to the class of quantifiable general frames validating it. We also provide a sufficient condition for the truth of all formulas, possibly with quantifiers, to be preserved under passing from a quantifiable general frame to its underlying Kripke frame. This is reminiscent of both the idea of elementary submodel in model theory and the persistence concepts in propositional modal logic. The key to this condition is the concept of finite diversity (Fritz 2023), and with it, we show that if $\Theta$ is a set of Sahlqvist formulas whose class of Kripke frames has finite diversity, then the smallest normal propositionally quantified modal logic containing $\Theta$, Barcan, a formula stating the existence of world propositions, and a formula stating the definability of successor sets, is Kripke complete. As a special case, we have a simple finite axiomatization of the logic of Euclidean Kripke frames.

Abstract:The algebraic $\lambda$-calculus is an extension of the ordinary $\lambda$-calculus with linear combinations of terms. We establish that two ordinary $\lambda$-terms are equivalent in the algebraic $\lambda$-calculus iff they are $\beta$-equal. Although this result was originally stated in the early 2000's (in the setting of Ehrhard and Regnier's differential $\lambda$-calculus), the previously proposed proofs were wrong: we explain why previous approaches failed and develop a new proof technique to establish conservativity.

Abstract:We advocate the use of de Bruijn's universal abstraction $\lambda^\infty$ for the quantification of schematic variables in the predicative setting and we present a typed $\lambda$-calculus featuring the quantifier $\lambda^\infty$ accompanied by other practically useful constructions like explicit substitutions and expected type annotations. The calculus stands just on two notions, i.e., bound rt-reduction and parametric validity, and has the expressive power of $\lambda\rightarrow$. Thus, while not aiming at being a logical framework by itself, it does enjoy many desired invariants of logical frameworks including confluence of reduction, strong normalization, preservation of type by reduction, decidability, correctness of types and uniqueness of types up to conversion. This calculus belongs to the $\lambda\delta$ family of formal systems, which borrow some features from the pure type systems and some from the languages of the Automath tradition, but stand outside both families. In particular, the calculus includes and evolves two earlier systems of this family. Moreover, a machine-checked specification of its theory is available.

Abstract:This paper studies normalisation by evaluation for typed lambda calculus from a categorical and algebraic viewpoint. The first part of the paper analyses the lambda definability result of Jung and Tiuryn via Kripke logical relations and shows how it can be adapted to unify definability and normalisation, yielding an extensional normalisation result. In the second part of the paper the analysis is refined further by considering intensional Kripke relations (in the form of Artin glueing) and shown to provide a function for normalising terms, casting normalisation by evaluation in the context of categorical glueing. The technical development includes an algebraic treatment of the syntax and semantics of the typed lambda calculus that allows the definition of the normalisation function to be given within a simply typed metatheory. A normalisation-by-evaluation program in a dependently-typed functional programming language is synthesised.

Abstract:We prove two completeness results for Kleene algebra with tests and a top element, with respect to guarded string languages and binary relations. While the equational theories of those two classes of models coincide over the signature of Kleene algebra, this is no longer the case when we consider an additional constant ``top'' for the full element. Indeed, the full relation satisfies more laws than the full language, and we show that those additional laws can all be derived from a single additional axiom. We recover that the two equational theories coincide if we slightly generalise the notion of relational model, allowing sub-algebras of relations where top is a greatest element but not necessarily the full relation. We use models of closed languages and reductions in order to prove our completeness results, which are relative to any axiomatisation of the algebra of regular events. For one of our constructions, we extend the concept of finite monoid recognisability to guarded-string languages; this device makes it possible to obtain a PSpace algorithm for the equational theory of binary relations.
