Abstract:This paper presents a formalization of the classical proof of completeness in Henkin-style developed by Troelstra and van Dalen for intuitionistic logic with respect to Kripke models. The completeness proof incorporates their insights in a fresh and elegant manner that is better suited for mechanization. We discuss details of our implementation in the Lean theorem prover with emphasis on the prime extension lemma and construction of the canonical model. Our implementation is restricted to a system of intuitionistic propositional logic with implication, conjunction, disjunction, and falsity given in terms of a Hilbert-style axiomatization. As far as we know, our implementation is the first verified Henkin-style proof of completeness for intuitionistic logic following Troelstra and van Dalen's method in the literature. Kalmár-style constructive completeness proofs for classical positive propositional calculi

Abstract:We shall settle the completeness of some classical positive propositional calculi (positive propositional calculi in which the so-called Peirce's law holds) by resorting to a close adaptation of Kalmar's completeness proof procedure. First of all, we shall employ this adaptation to establish the completeness of the most familiar axiomatic characterization of the classical logic of material implication and disjunction. Next, we shall demonstrate that the completeness of the so-called classical positive propositional calculus can be proved either through essentially the same adaptation of Kalmar's procedure or as an immediate consequence of the conjunction of our first result and the circumstance of each positive formula being reducible to a syntactically and semantically equivalent one exhibiting a particular normal form. Finally, by defining disjunction in terms of material implication and so mirroring the classical calculus of material implication and disjunction in the classical implicative calculus, the completeness of the latter, as well as the completeness of the classical calculus of material implication and conjunction, will be shown to follow from the completeness of the former in quite simple and direct ways. It is worth noting that all these completeness proofs will be constructive, that is to say, we can easily extract from each of them an effective method for producing formal deductions of all theses of the axiomatic system concerned.

Abstract:In this paper we give a new proof for the completeness of infinite valued propositional Łukasiewicz logic introduced by Łukasiewicz and Tarski in 1930. Our approach employs a Hilbert-style proof that relies on the concept of maximal consistent extensions, and unlike classical logic, in this context, the maximal extensions are not required to include all formulas or their negations. To illustrate this point, we provide examples of such formulas.

Some General Completeness Results for Propositionally Quantified Modal Logics

Abstract:We study the completeness problem for propositionally quantified modal logics on quantifiable general frames, where the admissible sets are the propositions the quantifiers can range over and expressible sets of worlds are admissible, and Kripke frames, where the quantifiers range over all sets of worlds. We show that any normal propositionally quantified modal logic containing all instances of the Barcan scheme is strongly complete with respect to the class of quantifiable general frames validating it. We also provide a sufficient condition for the truth of all formulas, possibly with quantifiers, to be preserved under passing from a quantifiable general frame to its underlying Kripke frame. This is reminiscent of both the idea of elementary submodel in model theory and the persistence concepts in propositional modal logic. The key to this condition is the concept of finite diversity (Fritz 2023), and with it, we show that if $\Theta$ is a set of Sahlqvist formulas whose class of Kripke frames has finite diversity, then the smallest normal propositionally quantified modal logic containing $\Theta$, Barcan, a formula stating the existence of world propositions, and a formula stating the definability of successor sets, is Kripke complete. As a special case, we have a simple finite axiomatization of the logic of Euclidean Kripke frames.

Abstract:We present a completeness result for a logical system which combines stit logic and justification logic in order to represent proving activity of the agents. This logic is interpreted over the semantics introduced in earlier publications. We define a Hilbert-style axiomatic system for this logic and show that this system is strongly complete relative to the intended semantics.

Abstract:This thesis aims to provide a suite of techniques to generate completeness results for coalgebraic logics with axioms of arbitrary rank. We have chosen to investigate the possibility to generalize what is arguably one of the most successful methods to prove completeness results in `classical' modal logic, namely completeness-via-canonicity. This technique is particularly well-suited to a coalgebraic generalization because of its clean and abstract algebraic formalism.

Abstract:Sandqvist gave a proof-theoretic semantics (P-tS) for classical logic (CL) that explicates the meaning of the connectives without assuming bivalance. Later, he gave a semantics for intuitionistic propositional logic (IPL). While soundness in both cases is proved through standard techniques, the proof completeness for CL is complex and somewhat obscure, but clear and simple for IPL. Makinson gave a simplified proof of completeness for classical propositional logic (CPL) by directly relating the the P-tS to the logic's extant truth-functional semantics. In this paper, we give an elementary, constructive, and native -- in the sense that it does not presuppose the model-theoretic interpretation of classical logic -- proof of completeness the P-tS of CL using the techniques applies for IPL. Simultaneously, we give a proof of soundness and completeness for first-order intuitionistic logic (IL).

Abstract:We continue our work on implicative assemblies by investigating under which circumstances a subset $M \subseteq \mathscr{S}$ gives rise to a lex full subcategory $\mathbf{Asm}_M$ of the quasitopos $\mathbf{Asm}_{\mathcal{A}}$ of all assemblies such that $(\mathbf{Asm}_M)_{reg/lex} \simeq \mathbf{Asm}_{\mathcal{A}}$. We establish a characterisation. Furthermore, this latter is relevant to the study of $\mathbf{Asm}_M$'s ex/lex-completion.

Abstract:The logic FO(ID) uses ideas from the field of logic programming to extend first order logic with non-monotone inductive definitions. Such logic formally extends logic programming, abductive logic programming and datalog, and thus formalizes the view on these formalisms as logics of (generalized) inductive definitions. The goal of this paper is to study a deductive inference method for PC(ID), which is the propositional fragment of FO(ID). We introduce a formal proof system based on the sequent calculus (Gentzen-style deductive system) for this logic. As PC(ID) is an integration of classical propositional logic and propositional inductive definitions, our sequent calculus proof system integrates inference rules for propositional calculus and definitions. We present the soundness and completeness of this proof system with respect to a slightly restricted fragment of PC(ID). We also provide some complexity results for PC(ID). By developing the proof system for PC(ID), it helps us to enhance the understanding of proof-theoretic foundations of FO(ID), and therefore to investigate useful proof systems for FO(ID).

Abstract:The logic iGLC is the intuitionistic version of Löb's Logic plus the completeness principle A → □ A . In this paper, we prove an arithmetical completeness theorems for iGLC for theories equipped with two provability predicates □ and △ that prove the schemes A → △ A and □ △ S → □ S for S ∈ Σ 1 . We provide two salient instances of the theorem. In the first, □ is fast provability and △ is ordinary provability and, in the second, □ is ordinary provability and △ is slow provability. Using the second instance, we reprove a theorem previously obtained by Mohammad Ardeshir and Mojtaba Mojtahedi [1] determining the Σ 1 -provability logic of Heyting Arithmetic.

Abstract:Left-sequential logics provide a means for reasoning about (closed) propositional terms with atomic propositions that may have side effects and that are evaluated sequentially from left to right. Such propositional terms are commonly used in programming languages to direct the flow of a program. In this thesis we explore two such left-sequential logics. First we discuss Fully Evaluated Left-Sequential Logic, which employs a full evaluation strategy, i.e., to evaluate a term every one of its atomic propositions is evaluated causing its possible side effects to occur. We then turn to Short-Circuit (Left-Sequential) Logic as presented in [BP10b], where the evaluation may be 'short-circuited', thus preventing some, if not all, of the atomic propositions in a term being evaluated. We propose evaluation trees as a natural semantics for both logics and provide axiomatizations for the least identifying variant of each. From this, we define a logic with connectives that prescribe a full evaluation strategy as well as connectives that prescribe a short-circuit evaluation strategy.

Abstract:We give an analysis and generalizations of some long-established constructive completeness results in terms of categorical logic and pre-sheaf and sheaf semantics. The purpose is in no small part conceptual and organizational: from a few basic ingredients arises a more unified picture connecting constructive completeness with respect to Tarski semantics, to the extent that it is available, with various completeness theorems in terms of presheaf and sheaf semantics (and thus with Kripke and Beth semantics). From this picture are obtained both ("reverse mathematical") equivalence results and new constructive completeness theorems; in particular, the basic set-up is flexible enough to obtain strong constructive completeness results for languages of arbitrary size and languages for which equality between the elements of the signature is not decidable.

Abstract:We define instantiational and algorithmic completeness for a formal language. We show that, in the presence of Church's Thesis, an alternative interpretation of Goedelian incompleteness is that Peano Arithmetic is instantiationally complete, but algorithmically incomplete. We then postulate a Provability Thesis that links Peano Arithmetic and effective algorithmic computability, just as Church's Thesis links Recursive Arithmetic and effective instantiational computability.

Abstract:Alongside the analogy between maximal ideals and complete theories, the Jacobson radical carries over from ideals of commutative rings to theories of propositional calculi. This prompts a variant of Lindenbaum’s Lemma that relates classical validity and intuitionistic provability, and the syntactical counterpart of which is Glivenko’s Theorem. The Jacobson radical in fact turns out to coincide with the classical deductive closure. As a by-product we obtain a possible interpretation in logic of the axioms-as-rules conservation criterion for a multi-conclusion Scott-style entailment relation over a single-conclusion one.

Proof-theoretic Semantics for the Logic of Bunched Implications

Abstract:Typically, substructural logics are used in applications because of their resource interpretations, and these interpretations often refer to the celebrated number-of-uses reading of their implications. However, despite its prominence, this reading is not at all reflected in the truth-functional semantics of these logics. It is a proof-theoretic interpretation of the logic. Hence, one desires a \emph{proof-theoretic semantics} of such logics in which this reading is naturally expressed. This paper delivers such a semantics for the logic of Bunched Implications (BI), generalizing earlier work on IMLL, which is well-known as a logic of resources with numerous applications to verification and modelling. Specifically, it delivers a base-extension semantics (B-eS) for BI in which resources are \emph{bunches} of atoms that get passed from antecedent to consequent in precisely the expected way.

Fraïssé's conjecture, partial impredicativity and well-ordering principles, part I

Abstract:Fraïssé's conjecture (proved by Laver) is implied by the $\Pi^1_1$-comprehension axiom of reverse mathematics, as shown by Montalbán. The implication must be strict for reasons of quantifier complexity, but it seems that no better bound has been known. We locate such a bound in a hierarchy of Suzuki and Yokoyama, which extends Towsner's framework of partial impredicativity. Specifically, we show that Fraïssé's conjecture is implied by a principle of pseudo $\Pi^1_1$-comprehension. As part of the proof, we introduce a cofinite version of the $\Delta^0_2$-Ramsey theorem, which may be of independent interest. We also relate pseudo $\Pi^1_1$-comprehension to principles of pseudo $\beta$-model reflection (due to Suzuki and Yokoyama) and reflection for $\omega$-models of transfinite induction (studied by Rathjen and Valencia-Vizcaíno). In a forthcoming companion paper, we characterize pseudo $\Pi^1_1$-comprehension by a well-ordering principle, to get a transparent combinatorial bound for the strength of Fraïssé's conjecture.
