Abstract:Using Isabelle/HOL, we verify the state-of-the-art decision procedure for multi-level syllogistic with singleton (MLSS for short), which is a quantifier-free fragment of set theory. We formalise its syntax and semantics as well as a sound and complete tableau calculus for it. We also provide an executable specification of a decision procedure that exhaustively applies the rules of the calculus and prove its termination. Furthermore, we extend the calculus with a lightweight type system that paves the way for an integration of the procedure into Isabelle/HOL.

Abstract:Hybrid logic is one of the extensions of modal logic. The many-dimensional product of hybrid logic is called hybrid product logic (HPL). We construct a sound and complete tableau calculus for two-dimensional HPL. Also, we made a tableau calculus for hybrid dependent product logic (HdPL), where one dimension depends on the other. In addition, we add a special rule to the tableau calculus for HdPL and show that it is still sound and complete. All of them lack termination, however.

Abstract:We shall settle the completeness of some classical positive propositional calculi (positive propositional calculi in which the so-called Peirce's law holds) by resorting to a close adaptation of Kalmar's completeness proof procedure. First of all, we shall employ this adaptation to establish the completeness of the most familiar axiomatic characterization of the classical logic of material implication and disjunction. Next, we shall demonstrate that the completeness of the so-called classical positive propositional calculus can be proved either through essentially the same adaptation of Kalmar's procedure or as an immediate consequence of the conjunction of our first result and the circumstance of each positive formula being reducible to a syntactically and semantically equivalent one exhibiting a particular normal form. Finally, by defining disjunction in terms of material implication and so mirroring the classical calculus of material implication and disjunction in the classical implicative calculus, the completeness of the latter, as well as the completeness of the classical calculus of material implication and conjunction, will be shown to follow from the completeness of the former in quite simple and direct ways. It is worth noting that all these completeness proofs will be constructive, that is to say, we can easily extract from each of them an effective method for producing formal deductions of all theses of the axiomatic system concerned.

Abstract:In this work we suggest the use of a set-theoretical interpretation of semantic tableaux for teaching propositional logic. If the student has previous notions of basic set theory, this approach to semantical tableaux can clarify her the way semantic trees operate, linking the syntactical and semantical sides of the process. Also, it may be useful for the introduction of more advanced topics in logic, like modal logic.

Abstract:The logic FO(ID) uses ideas from the field of logic programming to extend first order logic with non-monotone inductive definitions. Such logic formally extends logic programming, abductive logic programming and datalog, and thus formalizes the view on these formalisms as logics of (generalized) inductive definitions. The goal of this paper is to study a deductive inference method for PC(ID), which is the propositional fragment of FO(ID). We introduce a formal proof system based on the sequent calculus (Gentzen-style deductive system) for this logic. As PC(ID) is an integration of classical propositional logic and propositional inductive definitions, our sequent calculus proof system integrates inference rules for propositional calculus and definitions. We present the soundness and completeness of this proof system with respect to a slightly restricted fragment of PC(ID). We also provide some complexity results for PC(ID). By developing the proof system for PC(ID), it helps us to enhance the understanding of proof-theoretic foundations of FO(ID), and therefore to investigate useful proof systems for FO(ID).

Abstract:To specify and verify the concurrent and reactive systems with the theorem proving approach, a complete axiomatization is formalized for first order projection temporal logic (PTL) with both finite and infinite time. To this end, PTL is restricted to a finite domain, and the syntax, semantics as well as the axiomatization of PTL are presented. Further, the techniques of labeled normal form and labeled normal form graph of PTL formulas are introduced respectively, with which a decision procedure for quantifier free PTL (QFPTL) formulas is given. Moreover, a generalized labeled normal form graph is defined and employed to transform a quantified PTL formula into its equivalent QFPTL formula. Finally, a decision procedure for PTL is formalized and the completeness of the axiomatic system is proved based on the decidability of PTL formulas.

Abstract:We present the first complete axiomatisation for quantifier-free separation logic. The logic is equipped with the standard concrete heaplet semantics and the proof system has no external feature such as nominals/labels. It is not possible to rely completely on proof systems for Boolean BI as the concrete semantics needs to be taken into account. Therefore, we present the first internal Hilbert-style axiomatisation for quantifier-free separation logic. The calculus is divided in three parts: the axiomatisation of core formulae where Boolean combinations of core formulae capture the expressivity of the whole logic, axioms and inference rules to simulate a bottom-up elimination of separating connectives, and finally structural axioms and inference rules from propositional calculus and Boolean BI with the magic wand.

A propositional cirquent calculus for computability logic

Abstract:Cirquent calculus is a proof system with inherent ability to account for sharing subcomponents in logical expressions. Within its framework, this article constructs an axiomatization CL18 of the basic propositional fragment of computability logic the game-semantically conceived logic of computational resources and tasks. The nonlogical atoms of this fragment represent arbitrary so called static games, and the connectives of its logical vocabulary are negation and the parallel and choice versions of conjunction and disjunction. The main technical result of the article is a proof of the soundness and completeness of CL18 with respect to the semantics of computability logic.

Abstract:Extending classical propositional logic, instantial neighbor-hood logic (INL) employs formulas like square (alpha(1), ..., alpha(j); alpha(0)). The intended meaning of such a formula is: there is a neighborhood (of the current point) in which alpha(0) universally holds and none of alpha(1), ..., alpha(j) universally fails. This paper offers to INL a tableau system that supports mechanical proof/counter-model search.

Abstract:Hybrid logic is a modal logic with additional operators specifying nominals and is highly expressive. For example, there is no formula corresponding to the irreflexivity of Kripke frames in basic modal logic, but there is in hybrid logic. Irreflexivity is significant in that irreflexive and symmetric Kripke frames can be regarded as undirected graphs reviewed from a graph theoretic point of view. Thus, the study of the hybrid logic with axioms corresponding to irreflexivity and symmetry can help to elucidate the logical properties of undirected graphs. In this paper, we formulate the tableau method of the hybrid logic for undirected graphs. Our main result is to show the completeness theorem and the termination property of the tableau method, which leads us to prove the decidability.

Abstract:Quasi-Boolean modal algebras are quasi-Boolean algebras with a modal operator satisfying the interaction axiom. Sequential quasi-Boolean modal logics and the relational semantics are introduced. Kripke-completeness for some quasi-Boolean modal logics is shown by the canonical model method. We show that every descriptive persistent quasi-Boolean modal logic is canonical. The finite model property of some quasi-Boolean modal logics is proved. A cut-free Gentzen sequent calculus for the minimal quasi-Boolean logic is developed and we show that it has the Craig interpolation property.

Simple tableaux for two expansions of Gödel modal logic

Abstract:This paper considers two logics. The first one, $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{inv}$, is an expansion of the Gödel modal logic $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}$ with the involutive negation $\sim_\mathsf{i}$ defined as $v({\sim_\mathsf{i}}\phi,w)=1-v(\phi,w)$. The second one, $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{bl}$, is the expansion of $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{inv}$ with the bi-lattice connectives and modalities. We explore their semantical properties w.r.t. the standard semantics on $[0,1]$-valued Kripke frames and define a unified tableaux calculus that allows for the explicit countermodel construction. For this, we use an alternative semantics with the finite model property. Using the tableaux calculus, we construct a decision algorithm and show that satisfiability and validity in $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{inv}$ and $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}_\mathsf{bl}$ are PSpace-complete.

Abstract:We present a completeness result for a logical system which combines stit logic and justification logic in order to represent proving activity of the agents. This logic is interpreted over the semantics introduced in earlier publications. We define a Hilbert-style axiomatic system for this logic and show that this system is strongly complete relative to the intended semantics.

Abstract:Barely set-valued tableaux are a variant of Young tableaux in which one box contains two numbers as its entry. It has recently been discovered that there are product formulas enumerating certain classes of barely set-valued tableaux. We give some $q$-analogs of these product formulas by introducing a version of major index for these tableaux. We also give product formulas and $q$-analogs for barely set-valued plane partitions. Many of the results are stated in the generality of $P$-partitions that then specialize to particularly nice formulas for rectangles and minuscule posets. The proofs use several probability distributions on the set of order ideals of a poset, depending on the real parameter $q>0$, which we think could be of independent interest.

Proofs of valid categorical syllogisms in one diagrammatic and two symbolic axiomatic systems

Abstract:Gottfried Leibniz embarked on a research program to prove all the Aristotelic categorical syllogisms by diagrammatic and algebraic methods. He succeeded in proving them by means of Euler diagrams, but didn't produce a manuscript with their algebraic proofs. We demonstrate how key excerpts scattered across various Leibniz's drafts on logic contained sufficient ingredients to prove them by an algebraic method -- which we call the Leibniz-Cayley (LC) system -- without having to make use of the more expressive and complex machinery of first-order quantificational logic. In addition, we prove the classic categorical syllogisms again by a relational method -- which we call the McColl-Ladd (ML) system -- employing categorical relations studied by Hugh McColl and Christine Ladd. Finally, we show the connection of ML and LC with Boolean algebra, proving that ML is a consequence of LC, and that LC is a consequence of the Boolean lattice axioms, thus establishing Leibniz's historical priority over George Boole in characterizing and applying (a sufficient fragment of) Boolean algebra to effectively tackle categorical syllogistic.
