Abstract:The Schur class, denoted by $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$, is the set of all functions analytic and bounded by one in modulus in the open unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$, that is \[ \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D}) = \{\varphi \in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}): \|\varphi\|_{\infty} := \sup_{z \in \mathbb{D}} |\varphi(z)| \leq 1\}. \] The elements of $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ are called Schur functions. A classical result going back to I. Schur states: A function $\varphi: \mathbb{D} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ is in $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{D})$ if and only if there exist a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and an isometry (known as colligation operator matrix or scattering operator matrix) \[ V = \begin{bmatrix} a & B \\ C & D \end{bmatrix} : \mathbb{C} \oplus \mathcal{H} \rightarrow \mathbb{C} \oplus \mathcal{H}, \] such that $\varphi$ admits a transfer function realization corresponding to $V$, that is \[ \varphi(z) = a + z B (I_{\mathcal{H}} - z D)^{-1} C \quad \quad (z \in \mathbb{D}). \] An analogous statement holds true for Schur functions on the bidisc. On the other hand, Schur-Agler class functions on the unit polydisc in $\mathbb{C}^n$ is a well-known "analogue" of Schur functions on $\mathbb{D}$. In this paper, we present algorithms to factorize Schur functions and Schur-Agler class functions in terms of colligation matrices. More precisely, we isolate checkable conditions on colligation matrices that ensure the existence of Schur (Schur-Agler class) factors of a Schur (Schur-Agler class) function and vice versa.

Abstract:We deduce factorization properties for a quasi-Banach module over a quasi-Banach algebra. Especially we extend a result by Hewitt and prove that if any such algebra which possess a bounded left approximate identity, then any element in the module can be factorized. As applications, we deduce factorization properties for Wiener amalgam spaces, for an extended family of modulation spaces and for Schatten symbol classes in pseudo-differential calculus under multiplications like convolutions, twisted convolutions and symbolic products. For example we show for Wiener amalgam spaces that WL^{1,r}*WL^{p,q}=WL^{p,q} when r in (0,1], and p and q are finite and larger than r. In particular we improve Rudin's identity L^1*L^1=L^1.

Abstract:In the first part of the paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition on a complex-valued function F on R 2 such that F ⁢ ( f ) ∈ M θ r , s ⁢ ( R n ) for all f ∈ M θ r , 1 ⁢ ( R n ) , 1 ≤ r < ∞ , 1 ≤ s < 2 , where M θ r , s ⁢ ( R n ) is the affine modulation space associated with the fractional Fourier transform. In this context, we obtain that if F acts on M θ r , 1 ⁢ ( R n ) by composition, then F is necessarily real analytic and F ⁢ ( 0 ) = 0 . As M θ r , 1 ⁢ ( R n ) is neither a Banach algebra nor closed under complex conjugation, we prove sufficiency of the condition for a subclass of M θ r , 1 ⁢ ( R n ) under some additional hypothesis on F. We provide an example to show that we cannot drop the additional hypothesis. Thus we characterize the functions that operate in the affine modulation space setting. In the second part, we study the factorization problem in the context of M θ r , s ⁢ ( R n ) . We obtain factorization of M θ r , s ⁢ ( R 2 ⁢ n ) , viewing it as an L 1 ⁢ ( R 2 ⁢ n ) module with respect to convolution and λ-twisted convolution associated with the fractional Fourier transform. The problems mentioned above originated in the work of Helson, Kahane, Katznelson, Rudin, Cohen, and Hewitt respectively.

Abstract:Grothendieck's inequalities for operators and bilinear forms imply some factorization results for complex m × n matrices. The theory of operator spaces provides a set up which describes 4 norm optimal factorizations of Grothendieck's sort. Abstract:Factorization algebras are local-to-global objects living on manifolds, and they arise naturally in mathematics and physics. Their local structure encompasses examples like associative algebras and vertex algebras; in these examples, their global structure encompasses Hochschild homology and conformal blocks. In the setting of quantum field theory, factorization algebras articulate a minimal set of axioms satisfied by the observables of a theory, and they capture concepts like the operator product and correlation functions. In this survey article for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, 2nd Edition, we give the definitions and key examples, compare this approach with other approaches to mathematically formalizing field theory, describe key results, and explain how higher symmetries can be encoded in this framework.

Abstract:A problem by Feichtinger, Heil, and Larson asks whether a positive-definite integral operator with $M_1$ kernel admits a symmetric rank-one decomposition which is strongly square-summable with respect to the $M_1$ norm. In conjunction with a concurrent result by Bandeira-Mixon-Steinerberger, we provide a negative answer to the problem and study special cases where such factorization is possible. We also discuss an application of the results to the semidefinite relaxation of a quadratic program.

Abstract:We provide a toolbox of extension, gluing, and assembly techniques for factorization algebras. Using these tools, we fill various gaps in the literature on factorization algebras on stratified manifolds, the main one being that constructible factorization algebras form a sheaf of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories. Additionally, we explain how to assemble constructible factorization algebras from the data on the individual strata together with module structures associated to the relative links; thus answering a question by Ayala. Along the way, we give detailed proofs of the following facts which are also of independent interest: constructibility is a local condition; the $\infty$-category of disks is a localization of any sufficiently fine poset of disks; constructibility implies the Weiss condition on disks; constructible factorization algebras are algebras for the $\infty$-operad of embedded disks. For each of these, variants or special cases already existed, but they were either incomplete or not general enough.

Abstract:Grothendieck's inequalities for operators and bilinear forms imply some factorization results for complex m x n matrices. Based on the theory of operator spaces and completely bounded mappings we present norm optimal versions of these results and two norm optimal factorization results related to the Schur product. We show that the spaces of respectively bilinear forms and Schur multipliers are conjugate duals to each other with respect to their completely bounded norms.

Abstract:We consider families of quasisymmetric functions with the property that if a symmetric function $f$ is a positive sum of functions in one of these families, then f is necessarily a positive sum of Schur functions. Furthermore, in each of the families studied, we give a combinatorial description of the Schur coefficients of $f$. We organize six such families into a poset, where functions in higher families in the poset are always positive integer sums of functions in each of the lower families. This poset includes the Schur functions, the quasisymmetric Schur functions, the fundamental quasisymmetric generating functions of shifted dual equivalence classes, as well as three new families of functions --- one of which is conjectured to be a basis of the vector space of quasisymmetric functions. Each of the six families is realized as the fundamental quasisymmetric generating functions over the classes of some refinement of dual Knuth equivalence. Thus, we also produce a poset of refinements of dual Knuth equivalence. In doing so, we define quasi-dual equivalence to provide classes that generate quasisymmetric Schur functions.

Abstract:Factorizing datasets is an interesting process in a multitude of approaches, but many times it is not possible or efficient the computation of a factorization of the dataset. A method to obtain independent subcontexts of a formal context with Boolean data was proposed in Dubois and Prade based on the operators used in possibility theory. In this paper, we will analyze this method and study different properties related to the pairs of sets from which a factorization of a formal context arises. We also inspect how the properties given in the classical case can be extended to the fuzzy framework, which is essential to obtain a mechanism that allows the computation of independent subcontexts of a fuzzy context.
