Abstract:For a finite group $G$, the size of a minimum generating set of $G$ is denoted by $d(G)$. Given a finite group $G$ and an integer $k$, deciding if $d(G)\leq k$ is known as the minimum generating set (MIN-GEN) problem. A group $G$ of order $n$ has generating set of size $\lceil \log_p n \rceil$ where $p$ is the smallest prime dividing $n=|G|$. This fact is used to design an $n^{\log_p n+O(1)}$-time algorithm for the group isomorphism problem of groups specified by their Cayley tables (attributed to Tarjan by Miller, 1978). The same fact can be used to give an $n^{\log_p n+O(1)}$-time algorithm for the MIN-GEN problem. We show that the MIN-GEN problem can be solved in time $n^{(1/4)\log_p n+O(1)}$ for general groups given by their Cayley tables. This runtime incidentally matches with the runtime of the best known algorithm for the group isomorphism problem. We show that if a group $G$, given by its Cayley table, is the product of simple groups then a minimum generating set of $G$ can be computed in time polynomial in $|G|$. Given groups $G_i$ along with $d(G_i)$ for $i\in [r]$ the problem of computing $d(\Pi_{i\in[r]} G_i)$ is nontrivial. As a consequence of our result for products of simple groups we show that this problem also can be solved in polynomial time for Cayley table representation. For the MIN-GEN problem for permutation groups, to the best of our knowledge, no significantly better algorithm than the brute force algorithm is known. For an input group $G\leq S_n$, the brute force algorithm runs in time $|G|^{O(n)}$ which can be $2^{\Omega(n^2)}$. We show that if $G\leq S_n$ is a primitive permutation group then the MIN-GEN problem can be solved in time quasi-polynomial in $n$. We also design a $\mathrm{DTIME}(2^n)$ algorithm for computing a minimum generating set of permutation groups all of whose non-abelian chief factors have bounded orders.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group. In order to determine the smallest cardinality $d(G)$ of a generating set of $G$ and a generating set with this cardinality, one should repeat many times the test whether a subset of $G$ of small cardinality generates $G$. We prove that if a chief series of $G$ is known, then the numbers of these generating tests can be drastically reduced. At most $|G|^{13/5}$ subsets must be tested. This implies that the minimum generating set problem for a finite group $G$ can be solved in polynomial time.

Abstract:A generating set for a finite group $G$ is said to be minimal if no proper subset generates $G$, and $m(G)$ denotes the maximal size of a minimal generating set for $G$. We prove a conjecture of Lucchini, Moscatiello and Spiga by showing that there exist $a,b > 0$ such that any finite group $G$ satisfies $m(G) \leq a \cdot \delta(G)^b$, for $\delta(G) = \sum_{\text{$p$ prime}} m(G_p)$ where $G_p$ is a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$. To do this, we first bound $m(G)$ for all almost simple groups of Lie type (until now, no nontrivial bounds were known except for groups of rank $1$ or $2$). In particular, we prove that there exist $a,b > 0$ such that any finite simple group $G$ of Lie type of rank $r$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_{p^f}$ satisfies $r + \omega(f) \leq m(G) \leq a(r + \omega(f))^b$, where $\omega(f)$ denotes the number of distinct prime divisors of $f$. In the process, we confirm a conjecture of Gill and Liebeck that there exist $a,b > 0$ such that a minimal base for a faithful primitive action of an almost simple group of Lie type of rank $r$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p^f}$ has size at most $ar^b + \omega(f)$.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new algorithm for generating all permutations of multisets. The method uses transpositions only and adjacent transpositions are favoured. The algorithm requires a strong homogeneous transposition condition: non-adjacent transpositions are allowed only if all elements between the two permuted elements are equal to the smallest of those two elements. The storage required by the algorithm is small.

On derangements in simple permutation groups

Abstract:Let $G \leqslant {\rm Sym}(\Omega)$ be a finite transitive permutation group and recall that an element in $G$ is a derangement if it has no fixed points on $\Omega$. Let $\Delta(G)$ be the set of derangements in $G$ and define $\delta(G) = |\Delta(G)|/|G|$ and $\Delta(G)^2 = \{ xy \,:\, x,y \in \Delta(G)\}$. In recent years, there has been a focus on studying derangements in simple groups, leading to several remarkable results. For example, by combining a theorem of Fulman and Guralnick with recent work by Larsen, Shalev and Tiep, it follows that $\delta(G) \geqslant 0.016$ and $G = \Delta(G)^2$ for all sufficiently large simple transitive groups $G$. In this paper, we extend these results in several directions. For example, we prove that $\delta(G) \geqslant 89/325$ and $G = \Delta(G)^2$ for all finite simple primitive groups with soluble point stabilisers, without any order assumptions, and we show that the given lower bound on $\delta(G)$ is best possible. We also prove that every finite simple transitive group can be generated by two conjugate derangements, and we present several new results on derangements in arbitrary primitive permutation groups.

Abstract:We prove that if G is a sufficiently large finite almost simple group of Lie type, then given a fixed nontrivial element x in G and a coset of G modulo its socle, the probability that x and a random element of the coset generate a subgroup containing the socle is uniformly bounded away from 0 (and goes to 1 if the field size goes to infinity). This is new even if G is simple. Together with results of Lucchini and Burness--Guralnick--Harper, this proves a conjecture of Lucchini and has an application to profinite groups. A key step in the proof is the determination of the limits for the proportion of elements in a classical group which fix no subspace of any bounded dimension.

Minimal operations over permutation groups

Abstract:We classify the possible types of minimal operations above an arbitrary permutation group. Above the trivial group, a theorem of Rosenberg yields that there are five types of minimal operations. We show that above any non-trivial permutation group there are at most four such types. Indeed, except above Boolean groups acting freely on a set, there are only three. In particular, this is the case for oligomorphic permutation groups, for which we improve a result of Bodirsky and Chen by showing one of the types in their classification does not exist. Building on these results, we answer three questions of Bodirsky that were previously open.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group with exponent $n>1$, and let $a_1,\ldots,a_{n-1}\in G$. We show that there is a permutation $\sigma\in S_{n-1}$ such that all the elements $sa_{\sigma(s)}\ (s=1,\ldots,n-1)$ are nonzero if and only if $$\left|\left\{1\le s<n:\ \frac{n}{d}a_s\ne 0\right\}\right|\ge d-1\ \ \textrm{ for every positive divisor }\ d\ \textrm{ of }\ n.$$ When $G$ is the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$, this confirms a conjecture of Z.-W. Sun.

Abstract:In this note we present a simplified and slightly generalized version of a lemma the authors published in 1987. The lemma as stated here asserts that if the order of a permutation of $n$ elements is greater than $n^{\alpha}$ then some non-identity power of the permutation has support size less than $n/{\alpha}$. The original version made an unnecessary additional assumption on the cycle structure of the permutation; the proof of the present cleaner version follows the original proof verbatim. Application areas include parallel and sequential algorithms for permutation groups, the diameter of Cayley graphs of permutation groups, and the automorphisms of structures with regularity constraints such as Latin squares, Steiner 2-designs, and strongly regular graphs. This note also serves as a modest tribute to the junior author whose untimely passing is deeply mourned.

Abstract:It is well known that every finite simple group can be generated by two elements and this leads to a wide range of problems that have been the focus of intensive research in recent years. In this survey article we discuss some of the extraordinary generation properties of simple groups, focussing on topics such as random generation, $(a,b)$-generation and spread, as well as highlighting the application of probabilistic methods in the proofs of many of the main results. We also present some recent work on the minimal generation of maximal and second maximal subgroups of simple groups, which has applications to the study of subgroup growth and the generation of primitive permutation groups.

Orbits of permutation groups with no derangements

Abstract:Let $G$ be a nontrivial finite permutation group of degree $n$. If $G$ is transitive, then a theorem of Jordan states that $G$ has a derangement. Equivalently, a finite group is never the union of conjugates of a proper subgroup. If $G$ is intransitive, then $G$ may fail to have a derangement, and this can happen even if $G$ has only two orbits, both of which have size $(1/2+o(1))n$. However, we conjecture that if $G$ has two orbits of size exactly $n/2$ then $G$ does have a derangement, and we prove this conjecture when $G$ acts primitively on at least one of the orbits. Equivalently, we conjecture that a finite group is never the union of conjugates of two proper subgroups of the same order, and we prove this conjecture when at least one of the subgroups is maximal. The same conjecture was implicitly made by Feldman. We prove other cases of the conjecture, and we highlight connections our results have with intersecting families of permutations and roots of polynomials modulo primes. Along the way, we also prove a linear variant on Isbell's conjecture regarding derangements of prime-power order.

Abstract:Let G be a permutation group on a finite set . The base size of G is the minimal size of a subset of with trivial pointwise stabiliser in G. In this paper, we extend earlier work of Fawcett by determining the precise base size of every finite primitive permutation group of diagonal type. In particular, this is the first family of primitive groups arising in the O'Nan–Scott theorem for which the exact base size has been computed in all cases. Our methods also allow us to determine all the primitive groups of diagonal type with a unique regular suborbit.

Abstract:Let $G_{k,n}$ be a group of permutations of $kn$ objects which permutes things independently in disjoint blocks of size $k$ and then permutes the blocks. We investigate the probabilistic and/or enumerative aspects of random elements of $G_{k,n}$. This includes novel limit theorems for fixed points, cycles of various lengths, number of cycles and inversions. The limits are compound Poisson distributions with interesting dependence structure.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite permutation group acting on $\Omega$. A base for $G$ is a subset $B \subseteq \Omega$ such that the pointwise stabilizer $G_{(B)}$ is the identity. The base size of $G$, denoted by $b(G)$, is the cardinality of the smallest possible base. The minimal degree of $G$, denoted by $\mu(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of the support of a non trivial element of $G$. In this paper, we establish a new upper bound for $b(G)$ when $G$ is primitive, and subsequently prove that if $G$ is a primitive group different from the Mathieu group of degree $24$, then $\mu(G)b(G)\leq n \log n$, where $n$ is the degree of $G$. This bound is best possible, up to a multiplicative constant.
