Abstract:Semi-direct products of finite groups have permutation representations that are constructed from the permutation representations of their constituents. One can envision these in a metaphoric sense in which a rope is made from a bundle of threads. In this way, subgroups and quotients are easily visualized. The general idea is applied to the finite subgroups of the special unitary group of $(2\times 2)$-matrices. Amusing diagrams are developed that describe the unit quaternions, the binary tetrahedral, octahedral, and icosahedral group as well as the dicyclic groups. In all cases, the quotients as subgroups of the permutation group are readily apparent. These permutation representations lead to injective homomorphisms into semi-direct products.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group on $\Omega$. The $G$-invariant partitions form a sublattice of the lattice of all partitions of $\Omega$, having the further property that all its elements are uniform (that is, have all parts of the same size). If, in addition, all the equivalence relations defining the partitions commute, then the relations form an \emph{orthogonal block structure}, a concept from statistics; in this case the lattice is modular. If it is distributive, then we have a \emph{poset block structure}, whose automorphism group is a \emph{generalised wreath product}. We examine permutation groups with these properties, which we call the \emph{OB property} and \emph{PB property} respectively, and in particular investigate when direct and wreath products of groups with these properties also have these properties. A famous theorem on permutation groups asserts that a transitive imprimitive group $G$ is embeddable in the wreath product of two factors obtained from the group (the group induced on a block by its setwise stabiliser, and the group induced on the set of blocks by~$G$). We extend this theorem to groups with the PB property, embeddng them into generalised wreath products. We show that the map from posets to generalised wreath products preserves intersections and inclusions. We have included background and historical material on these concepts.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical groups GL(n), U(n), O(n) or Sp(2n), over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well known that the contragredient of an irreducible admissible smooth representation of G is isomorphic to a twist of it by an automorphism of G. We prove that similar results hold for double covers of G that occur in the study of local theta correspondences.

Abstract:We investigate the representation of the symmetric group afforded by the action on its conjugacy class of fixed point free involutions, over an algebraically closed field of finite characteristic p. We discuss the general form of the set of involutions fixed by an arbitrary vertex of an irreducible component of the module afforded by the action, and show how such a set is composed of certain basic fixed point sets which we can enumerate in the case p = 2. The Broué correspondence allows us to pass from the fixed point sets to the vertices.

Abstract:Let σ ={σ _i | i∈ I} be some partition of the set ℙ of all primes and G a finite group. A set ℋ of subgroups of G is said to be a complete Hall σ -set of G if every member 1 of ℋ is a Hall σ _i -subgroup of G for some i∈ I and ℋ contains exactly one Hall σ _i -subgroup of G for every i such that σ _i∩π (G)∅ . Abstract:We focus on the permutation polynomials of the form $L(X)+\Tr_{m}^{3m}(X)^{s}$ over $\F_{q^3}$, where $\F_q$ is the finite field with $q=p^m$ elements, $p$ is a prime number, $m$ is a positive integer, $\Tr_{m}^{3m}$ is the relative trace function from $\F_{p^{3m}}$ to $\F_{p^{m}}$, $L(X)$ is a linearized polynomial over $\F_{q^{3}}$, and $s>1$ is a positive integer. More precisely, we present six new classes of permutation polynomials over $\F_{q^3}$ of the aforementioned form: one class over finite fields of even characteristic, three classes over finite fields of odd characteristic, and the remaining two over finite fields of arbitrary characteristic. Furthermore, we show that these classes of permutation polynomials are inequivalent to the known ones of the same form. We also provide the explicit expressions for the compositional inverses of each of these classes of permutation polynomials.

Abstract:The permutation representation afforded by a Coxeter group W acting on the cosets of a standard parabolic subgroup inherits many nice properties from W such as a shellable Bruhat order and a flat deformation over Z[q] to a representation of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In this paper we define a larger class of ``quasiparabolic" subgroups (more generally, quasiparabolic W-sets), and show that they also inherit these properties. Our motivating example is the action of the symmetric group on fixed-point-free involutions by conjugation.

Abstract:Permutation Matrices are a well known class of matrices which encode the elements of the symmetric group on $d$ elements as a square $d\times d$ matrix. Motivated by [4], we define a similar class of matrices which are a generalization of Permutation Matrices. We give explicit formulas for the multiplication of these matrices. Lastly, we discuss the spectral radius, eigenvalues, and periodicity before giving a form of Birkhoff-Von Neumann's Theorem for Left Stochastic Matrices.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group. For all $a \in \Z$, such that $(a,|G|)=1$, the function $\rho_a: G \to G$ sending $g$ to $g^a$ defines a permutation of the elements of $G$. Motivated by a recent generalization of Zolotarev's proof of classic quadratic reciprocity, due to Duke and Hopkins, we study the signature of the permutation $\rho_a$. By introducing the group of conjugacy equivariant maps and the symmetric difference method on groups, we exhibit an integer $d_{G}$ such that $\text{sgn}(\rho_a)=(\frac{d_G}{a})$ for all $G$ in a large class of groups, containing all finite nilpotent and odd order groups.

Canon Permutation Posets

Abstract:A permutation of the multiset $\{1^m,2^m,\dots,n^m\}$ is a canon permutation if the subsequence formed by the $j$th copy of each element of $[n]:=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ is identical for all $j\in[m]$. Canon permutations were introduced by Elizalde and are motivated by pattern-avoiding concepts such as (quasi-)Stirling permutations. He proved that the descent polynomial of canon permutations exhibits a surprising product structure; as a further consequence, it is palindromic. Our goal is to understand canon permutations from the viewpoint of Stanley's $(P,w)$-partitions, along the way generalizing Elizalde's definition and results. We start with a labeled poset $P$ and extend it in a natural way to a canon labeling of the product poset $P \times [n]$. The resulting descent polynomial has a product structure which arises naturally from the theory of $(P,w)$-partitions. When $P$ is graded, this theory also implies palindromicity. We include results on weak descent polynomials, an amphibian construction between canon permutations and multiset permutations as well as $\gamma$-positivity and interpretations of descent polynomials of canon permutations.

Abstract:We investigate the question as to when the members of a finite regular semigroup may be permuted in such a way that each member is mapped to one of its inverses. In general this is not possible. However we reformulate the problem in terms of a related graph and, using an application of Hall's Marriage Lemma, we show in particular that the finite full transformation semigroup does enjoy this property.

Abstract:We describe an algorithm, implemented in Python, which can enumerate any permutation class with polynomial enumeration from a structural description of the class. In particular, this allows us to find formulas for the number of permutations of length n which can be obtained by a finite number of block sorting operations (e.g., reversals, block transpositions, cut-and-paste moves).

Abstract:Permutation clones generalise permutation groups and clone theory. We investigate permutation clones defined by relations, or equivalently, the automorphism groups of powers of relations. We find many structural results on the lattice of all relationally defined permutation clones on a finite set. We find all relationally defined permutation clones on two element set. We show that all maximal borrow closed permutation clones are either relationally defined or cancellatively defined. Permutation clones generalise clones to permutations of $A^n$. Emil Jeřábek found the dual structure to be weight mappings $A^k\rightarrow M$ to a commutative monoid, generalising relations. We investigate the case when the dual object is precisely a relation, equivalently, that $M={\mathbb B}$, calling these relationally defined permutation clones. We determine the number of relationally defined permutation clones on two elements (13). We note that many infinite classes of clones collapse when looked at as permutation clones.

Abstract:We raise the question of the realizability of permutation modules in the context of Kahn's realizability problem for abstract groups and the G -Moore space problem. Specifically, given a finite group G , we consider a collection of finitely generated -modules that admit a submodule decomposition on which G acts by permuting the summands. Then we prove the existence of connected finite spaces X that realize each as its i -th homology, G as its group of self-homotopy equivalences , and the action of G on each as the action of on .

Succinct Permutation Graphs

Abstract:We present a succinct data structure for permutation graphs, and their superclass of circular permutation graphs, i.e., data structures using optimal space up to lower order terms. Unlike concurrent work on circle graphs (Acan et al. 2022), our data structure also supports distance and shortest-path queries, as well as adjacency and neighborhood queries, all in optimal time. We present in particular the first succinct exact distance oracle for (circular) permutation graphs. A second succinct data structure also supports degree queries in time independent of the neighborhood's size at the expense of an $O(\log n/\log \log n)$-factor overhead in all running times. Furthermore, we develop a succinct data structure for the class of bipartite permutation graphs. We demonstrate how to run algorithms directly over our succinct representations for several problems on permutation graphs: Clique, Coloring, Independent Set, Hamiltonian Cycle, All-Pair Shortest Paths, and others. Finally, we initiate the study of semi-distributed graph representations; a concept that smoothly interpolates between distributed (labeling schemes) and centralized (standard data structures). We show how to turn some of our data structures into semi-distributed representations by storing only $O(n)$ bits of additional global information, circumventing the lower bound on distance labeling schemes for permutation graphs.
