Abstract:A pure topological characterization of primitive ideal spaces of separable nuclear C*-algebras is given. We show that a $T_0$-space $X$ is a primitive ideal space of a separable nuclear C*-algebra $A$ if and only if $X$ is point-complete second countable, and there is a continuous pseudo-open and pseudo-epimorphic map from a locally compact Polish space $P$ into $X$.

Abstract:Given a Hausdorff locally compact étale groupoid $\mathcal G$, we describe as a topological space the part of the primitive spectrum of $C^*(\mathcal G)$ obtained by inducing one-dimensional representations of amenable isotropy groups of $\mathcal G$. When $\mathcal G$ is amenable, second countable, with abelian isotropy groups, our result gives the description of $\operatorname{Prim} C^*(\mathcal G)$ conjectured by van Wyk and Williams. This, in principle, completely determines the ideal structure of a large class of separable C$^*$-algebras, including the transformation group C$^*$-algebras defined by amenable actions of discrete groups with abelian stabilizers and the C$^*$-algebras of higher rank graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we pursue three aims. The first one is to apply Amitsur's relations and radicals theory to the study of the lattices of closed two-sided ideals of C*-algebras A . We show that many new and many well-known results about C*-algebras follow naturally from this approach. To use "relation-radical" approach, we consider various subclasses of the class of all C*-algebras, which we call C*-properties, as they often linked to some properties of C*-algebras. Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.

Abstract:This article studies the properties of positive definite, radial functions on free groups following the work of Haagerup and Knudby . We obtain characterizations of radial functions with respect to the $\ell^{2}$ length on the free groups with infinite generators and the characterization of the positive definite, radial functions with respect to the $\ell^{p}$ length on the free real line with infinite generators for $0 < p \leq 2$. We obtain the Levi-Khintchine formulas for length-radial conditionally negative functions as well.

Abstract:The orbital diameter of a primitive permutation group is the maximal diameter of its orbital graphs. There has been a lot of interest in bounds for the orbital diameter. In this paper we provide explicit bounds on the diameters of groups of primitive affine groups with almost quasisimple point stabilizer. As a consequence we obtain a partial classification of primitive affine groups with orbital diameter less than or equal to 2.

Abstract:We present a method to explicitly compute a complete set of orthogonal primitive idempotents in a simple component with Schur index 1 of a rational group algebra $\mathbb{Q}G$ for $G$ a finite generalized strongly monomial group. For the same groups with no exceptional simple components in $\mathbb{Q}G$, we describe a subgroup of finite index in the group of units $\mathcal{U}(\mathbb{Z}G)$ of the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z}G$ that is generated by three nilpotent groups for which we give explicit description of their generators. We exemplify the theoretical constructions with a detailed concrete example to illustrate the theory. We also show that the Frobenius groups of odd order with a cyclic complement is a class of generalized strongly monomial groups where the theory developed in this paper is applicable.

Abstract:Let $\Lambda$ be an artin algebra and $\mathcal{C}$ be a functorially finite subcategory of mod$\Lambda$ which contains $\Lambda$ or $D\Lambda$. We use the concept of the infinite radical of $\mathcal{C}$ and show that $\mathcal{C}$ has an additive generator if and only if rad$^\infty_{\mathcal{C}}$ vanishes. In this case we describe the morphisms in powers of the radical of $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of its irreducible morphisms. Moreover, under a mild assumption, we prove that $\mathcal{C}$ is of finite representation type if and only if any family of monomorphisms (epimorphisms) between indecomposable objects in $\mathcal{C}$ is noetherian (conoetherian). Also, by using injective envelopes, projective covers, left $\mathcal{C}$-approximations and right $\mathcal{C}$-approximations of simple $\Lambda$-modules, we give other criteria to describe whether $\mathcal{C}$ is of finite representation type. In addition, we give a nilpotency index of the radical of $\mathcal{C}$ which is independent from the maximal length of indecomposable $\Lambda$-modules in $\mathcal{C}$.

On the stable radical of the module category for special biserial algebras

Abstract:Suppose $\Lambda$ is a special biserial algebra over an algebraically closed field. Schröer showed that if $\Lambda$ is domestic then the radical of the category of finitely generated (left) $\Lambda$-modules is nilpotent, and the least ordinal, denoted $\mathrm{st}(\Lambda)$, where the decreasing sequence of powers of the radical stabilizes satisfies $\mathrm{st}(\Lambda)<\omega^2$. With Gupta and Sardar, the third author conjectured that if $\Lambda$ has at least one band then $\omega\le\mathrm{st}(\Lambda)<\omega^2$ even when $\Lambda$ is non-domestic. In this paper we settle this conjecture in the affirmative. We also describe an algorithm to compute $\mathrm{st}(\Lambda)$ up to a finite error. We also show that for each $\omega\leq\alpha<\omega^2$ there is a finite-dimensional tame representation type algebra $\Gamma$ with $\mathrm{st}(\Gamma)=\alpha$.

Maximal amenability of the radial subalgebra in free quantum group factors

Abstract:We show that the radial MASA in the orthogonal free quantum group algebra L(FO_N) is maximal amenable if N is large enough, using the Asymptotic Orthogonality Property. This relies on a detailed study of the corresponding bimodule, for which we construct in particular a quantum analogue of Rădulescu's basis. As a byproduct we also obtain the value of the Pukánszky invariant for this MASA.

Abstract:If $k$ is an infinite cardinal, we say a C*-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is residually less than $k$ dimensional, $R_{<k}D,$ if the family of representations of $\mathcal{A}$ on Hilbert spaces of dimension less than $k$ separates the points of $\mathcal{A}.$ We give characterizations of this property, and we show that if $\{\mathcal{A}_{i}:i\in I\} $ is a family of $R_{<k}D$ algebras, then the free product $\underset{i\in I}{\ast}\mathcal{A}_{i}$ is $R_{<k}D$. If each $\mathcal{A}_{i}$ is unital, we give sufficient conditions, depending on the cardinal $k$, for the free product $\underset{i\in I}{\ast_{\mathbb{C}}}\mathcal{A}_{i}$ in the category of unital C*-algebras to be $R_{<k}D$. We also give a new characterization of RFD, in terms of a lifting property, for separable C*-algebras.

Abstract:Let G = S^d, d = 0, 1 or 3, act freely on a finitistic connected space X. This paper gives the cohomology classification of X if a mod 2 or rational cohomology of the orbit space X/G is isomorphic to the product of a projective space and sphere FP^n x S^m, where F = R, C or H, respectively. For a free involution on X, a lower bound of covering dimension of the coincidence set of a continuous map f: X -> R^k is also determined.

Abstract:In classical and real algebraic geometry there are several notions of the radical of an ideal I. There is the vanishing radical defined as the set of all real polynomials vanishing on the real zero set of I, and the real radical defined as the smallest real ideal containing I. By the real Nullstellensatz they coincide. This paper focuses on extensions of these to the free algebra R<x,x^*> of noncommutative real polynomials in x=(x_1,...,x_g) and x^*=(x_1^*,...,x_g^*). We work with a natural notion of the (noncommutative real) zero set V(I) of a left ideal I in the free algebra. The vanishing radical of I is the set of all noncommutative polynomials p which vanish on V(I). In this paper our quest is to find classes of left ideals I which coincide with their vanishing radical. We completely succeed for monomial ideals and homogeneous principal ideals. We also present the case of principal univariate ideals with a degree two generator and find that it is very messy. Also we give an algorithm (running under NCAlgebra) which checks if a left ideal is radical or is not, and illustrate how one uses our implementation of it.

Abstract:Given a Baumslag-Solitar group, we study its space of subgroups from a topological and dynamical perspective. We first determine its perfect kernel (the largest closed subset without isolated points). We then bring to light a natural partition of the space of subgroups into one closed subset and countably many open subsets that are invariant under the action by conjugation. One of our main results is that the restriction of the action to each piece is topologically transitive. This partition is described by an arithmetically defined function, that we call the phenotype, with values in the positive integers or infinity. We eventually study the closure of each open piece and also the closure of their union. We moreover identify in each phenotype a (the) maximal compact invariant subspace.
