Abstract:Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations are used to revisit the experiments on multibubble cavitation performed by Bremond et al. , Phys. Fluids 18 , 121505 (2006); Phys. Rev. Lett. 96 , 224501 (2006). In particular, we aim at understanding the asymmetry observed therein during the expansion and collapse of bubble clusters subjected to a pressure pulse. Our numerical simulations suggest that the asymmetry is due to the force applied by the imposed pressure pulse and it is a consequence of the finite effective speed of sound in the liquid. By comparing our numerical results to the experiments, we found that the effective speed of sound under the experimental conditions was smaller than that of degassed water due to microbubbles in the system which resulted from prior cavitation experiments in the same setup. The estimated values of the effective speed of sound are consistent with those derived from the classical theory of wave propagation in liquids with small amounts of gas. To support this theory, we also present evidence of tiny bubbles remaining in the liquid bulk as a result of the fragmentation of large bubbles during the prior cavitation experiments. Numerical Study of the Kinematic and Acoustic Characteristics of Bubble Clusters

Abstract:Direct numerical simulations are performed to study single gas/vapor bubble and spherical bubble clusters containing 13–352 vapor bubbles in compressible flow fields. The numerical results show that the single cavitation bubble keeps spherical during the collapse process, and the far-field acoustic pressure calculated by the Ffowcs William-Hawkings (FW-H) formulation is basically consistent with the analytical solution obtained based on the volume acceleration calculation. However, the spherical bubble cluster collapses layer by layer due to the strong coupling between bubbles. The closer to the center of the bubble cluster, the shorter the collapse time and the stronger the non-spherical deformation. The collapse of a bubble cluster would generate multiple acoustic pressure peaks, which cannot be accurately predicted by the volume fluctuation sound source theory. The size and volume fraction of the bubble cluster have a significant influence on the collapse time and the distribution of sound pressure. We found that when the volume fraction of a bubble cluster is large, the total collapse time is basically the same as that of its corresponding single bubble with the equal volume. The frequency distribution of sound pressure of a dense bubble cluster is also close to that of its corresponding single bubble. In addition, we found that a bubble cluster with randomly distributed bubble diameters collapses asymmetrically and rebounds in the late stage of the collapse process. The above study reveals part of the mechanism of bubble cluster collapse and sound generation, and provides a theoretical basis for the establishment of cavitation noise model.

Abstract:The detachment of bubbles from an underwater nozzle inevitably generates distinct acoustic signals. This work proposes numerical simulation models to investigate the effect of different nozzle wall configurations on bubble formation and acoustic characteristics. A combination of large eddy simulation (LES) model and Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW-H) equation is successfully applied to predict bubble acoustic pressures. The adaptive filtering techniques of signal processing are utilized in bubble acoustic analyses. In particular, transient spectrum based on time–frequency analyses can not only precisely count the bubbling period but also effectively measure the bubble sizes. The numerical results for bubble size are in good agreement with the theoretical data (less than 10% deviation). The main results of this research show that the structure of the nozzle wall plays a guiding role in vortex motion around bubbles. The bubble size also increases with the increase in exit-lip thickness, whereas the bubbling rate decreases.
Finite amplitude wave propagation through bubbly fluids

Abstract:The existence of only a few bubbles could drastically reduce the acoustic wave speed in a liquid. Wood's equation models the linear sound speed, while the speed of an ideal shock waves is derived as a function of the pressure ratio across the shock. The common finite amplitude waves lie, however, in between these limits. We show that in a bubbly medium, the high frequency components of finite amplitude waves are attenuated and dissipate quickly, but a low frequency part remains. This wave is then transmitted by the collapse of the bubbles and its speed decreases with increasing void fraction. We demonstrate that the linear and the shock wave regimes can be smoothly connected through a Mach number based on the collapse velocity of the bubbles.

Abstract:It has been found recently that the dynamic behavior of a cavitating hydrofoil is different from that in pure water in that, not only are the natural frequencies different, but the mode shapes may also change. In order to elucidate the mechanism behind this phenomenon, finite element simulations were carried out based on acoustic-structure coupling equations. It was found that the structure and acoustic modes exhibit mode transitions with the variation of the sound speed in the cavity. Further, the mode transition was caused by coupling of the structure with the acoustic modes, which was induced by the vapor mode. The amplitude of the vibration near the mode transition point was high and the mode shape was easily excited. Moreover, with the change of the sound speed in the cavity, the different distributions of the acoustic pressure mode resulted in different structure mode shapes, even on the same transition line. Considering this, a sheet cavitation was simulated by a small change of the void fraction to 0.999 and the sound speed from 343 to 275 m/s to obtain good agreement with the experimental data. Both results showed that the second bending mode under cavitation conditions became a bending-torsion coupled mode.

Abstract:This study develops a three-dimensional imaging system to obtain comprehensive information on asymmetric bubbles formed in five nozzles with exits of the same cross section to examine the relationship between their patterns of flow and their acoustic characteristics. Acoustic signals of the bubbles were recorded by a hydrophone, and were analyzed through filtering and the short-time Fourier transform. The results show that the morphology of the bubbles became complex with increasing aspect ratio of the cross section of the nozzle exit. This complexity was reflected in the shape of the bubbles as well as their manner of detachment and motion. Furthermore, the asymmetry of the bubbles had a significant impact on the sound pressure. Different bubble detachments from five nozzles can lead to different waveforms of sound pressures, viz., “triangle,” “tree,” and “fish.” The differences are proved to be closely associated with the bubbles having different patterns of flow. The work here can be used to identify the patterns of flow of bubbles, reduce noise, and detect failure.

Abstract:In this paper, the volume of fluid (VOF) model in conjunction with continuum surface force (CSF) model is applied to numerically investigate the single bubble formation process in the bubble columns. Meanwhile, the hybrid method (large-eddy simulation (LES) and acoustic analogy method) is used for bubble acoustic prediction. Experimental results provide a reliable validation of the numerical results. Adaptive filtering technique and time-frequency analyses are adapted for the numerical acoustic data at the gas velocity of 0.1 m/s. The spectrum and spectrogram approaches indicate that the numerical acoustic data covers two principal frequency components, in which, one is the bubble generation rate and the other is the natural frequency of volumetric bubble oscillation. By combining the studies of flow field and acoustic signals, volumetric bubble oscillation is found to be excited by an axial water jet up into the bubble, immediately following the bubble detachment. The results of this study lead to the proposition that numerical simulation method could be applied to well understanding of the physics behind the passive acoustic emission. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Direct numerical study of speed of sound in dispersed air-water two-phase flow

Abstract:Speed of sound is a key parameter for the compressibility effects in multiphase flow. We present a new approach to do direct numerical simulations on the speed of sound in compressible two-phase flow, based on the stratified multiphase flow model (Chang & Liou, JCP 2007). In this method, each face is divided into gas-gas, gas-liquid, and liquid-liquid parts via reconstruction of volume fraction, and the corresponding fluxes are calculated by Riemann solvers. Viscosity and heat transfer models are included. The effects of frequency (below the natural frequency of bubbles), volume fraction, viscosity and heat transfer are investigated. With frequency 1 kHz, under viscous and isothermal conditions, the simulation results satisfy the experimental ones very well. The simulation results show that the speed of sound in air-water bubbly two-phase flow is larger when the frequency is higher. At lower frequency, for the phasic velocities, the homogeneous condition is better satisfied. Considering the phasic temperatures, during the wave propagation an isothermal bubble behavior is observed. Finally, the dispersion relation of acoustics in two-phase flow is compared with analytical results below the natural frequency. This work for the first time presents an approach to the direct numerical simulations of speed of sound and other compressibility effects in multiphase flow, which can be applied to study more complex situations, especially when it is hard to do experimental study.

Simulating cavitation over different scales and regimes

Abstract:Cavitation is investigated over a range of scales and regimes for various flow configurations. At the bubble scale level, a volume-of-fluid (VOF) based incompressible flow solver is developed, and three canonical bubble collapse problems are simulated for validation. The results obtained from the VOF model show good agreement with past experiments and numerical simulations. The ability to study and track multiple bubbles is also incorporated in the context of the VOF model via a Lagrangian tagging algorithm. For cavitation inception, we study a shear layer at Re τ = 1500. Joint–PDFs of the flow invariants are obtained along the shear layer and the cores of the elongated vortices are found to be the regions most likely to experience inception. These regions have a rotation rate 4 × stronger than the stretching rate. Lastly, a fully compressible multi–scale method accounting for both the sheet cavities and the micro-bubbles is developed and validated. This model is applied to a case where both the unresolved and resolved bubble coexist and the findings are discussed.

Modeling time-delayed acoustic interactions of cavitation bubbles and bubble clusters

Abstract:We propose a low-dimensional modeling approach to simulate the dynamics, acoustic emissions and interactions of cavitation bubbles, based on a quasi-acoustic assumption. This quasi-acoustic assumption accounts for the compressibility of the medium surrounding the bubble and its finite speed of sound, whereby the potential of the acoustic wave emitted by the bubble propagates along outgoing characteristics. With these ingredients, a consistent set of equations describing the radial bubble dynamics as well as the resulting acoustic emissions and bubble-bubble interactions is obtained, which is accurate to the first order of the Mach number. This model is tested by considering several representative test cases, including the resonance behavior of multiple interacting bubbles and the response of dense mono- and polydisperse bubble clusters to a change in ambient pressure. The results are shown to be in excellent agreement with results reported in the literature. The differences associated with the finite propagation speed of the acoustic waves are observed to be most pronounced for the pressure-driven bubble dynamics in dense bubble clusters and the onset of cavitation in response to a change in ambient pressure.

Abstract:In order to simulate the acoustic cavitation process of double-bubble coupling, based on the fluid dynamics governing equation and fluid volume fraction model, this paper constructed a three-dimensional finite element simulation model of double-bubble coupled ultrasonic cavitation in Fluent software, and numerically simulated the dynamic process of double-bubble coupled acoustic cavitation in fluid driven by ultrasonic wave. The nonlinear dynamic characteristics of coupled acoustic cavitation with double bubbles are studied by evaluating the variation of the acoustic field around the cavitation bubble. The results indicate that under the ultrasonic drive, the spherical bubbles gradually widen at first to the maximal radius, then shrink swiftly, and eventually collapse. There is an interaction force between the paired double bubbles, which inhibits the expansion of cavitation bubbles and increases the bubble contraction time. The energy conversion ability of the cavitation bubble is strengthened in the contraction stage. Compared with the acoustic cavitation of the single bubble, the pressure inside the bubble is expanded when the coupled double bubble collapses. The analytical results in this paper will provide reference for the dynamic process simulation of the ultrasonic cavitation bubble group.

Abstract:Cavities exhibit inherent self-sustaining oscillations driven by the coupling between their hydrodynamic and acoustic properties. In practical applications, cavities are often placed within confinements that introduce compression waves, significantly influencing their primary flow characteristics. The oscillations in cavities have widespread applications, such as in fuel-air mixing, heat exchangers, and landing gears However, when resonance occurs, these oscillations can lead to structural failures. Therefore, understanding cavity oscillations under diverse geometrical configurations and flow conditions is essential. The present study examines the impact of top wall confinement on an open cavity with a length-to-depth ratio (L/D) ratio of 3 at Mach 1.71, along with the effects of varying deflection angles on flow characteristics and the influence of an increased Mach number on configurations with the highest and lowest oscillation frequencies. A three-dimensional numerical investigation is carried out, employing large eddy simulations within the OpenFOAM framework. We analyze the flow fields through the spatial variation of density over time. Fast Fourier Transformation and Wavelet Transformation reveal the frequency content from unsteady pressure signals and illustrate its evolution over time under different conditions. Additionally, reduced-order modeling provides a better understanding of the relationship between frequencies and flow structures of the cavity. Results from these analyses demonstrate that top wall confinement increases oscillation frequency, while greater deflection angles introduce Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the flow field, reducing the frequency. An increase in the Mach number to 2, further intensifies instability, substantially affecting oscillations.

Abstract:In this work, we perform high-speed imaging and numerical simulation to investigate the transient dynamics of cavitation bubbles near the end of a slender cylinder. The bubble dynamics can be categorized into four distinct regimes in terms of the types of bubble collapse, corresponding to the regular jet, needle jet, in-phase double jets, and anti-phase double jets, respectively, depending on two dimensionless parameters, the normalized cylinder radius η (=rc/Rmax, where rc is the cylinder radius and Rmax is the spherical bubble radius at maximum expansion), and the dimensionless standoff distance γ (=SD/Rmax, where SD is the standoff distance between the end surface of the cylinder and bubble center). The peak velocity of the liquid jet could easily reach a supersonic state in the regime of the needle jet when the cavitation bubble collapses near a slender cylinder, and the maximum jet velocity can reach up to 635 m/s. Quantitative analysis of the evolution of pressure distribution also indicates that the end surface of the cylinder will have strong hydrodynamic pressure loading, particularly for the case of η=0.3 and γ ranging from 0.5 to 0.83. Additionally, we find that the collapse time of the cavitation bubble near a slender cylinder is close to the Rayleigh collapse time. We believe that our findings can be valuable in mitigating or utilizing cavitation near solid cylinders.

Abstract:<p>Bubble behaviors near a boundary in an ultrasonic field are the fundamental forms of acoustic cavitation and of substantial importance in various applications, such as industry cleaning, chemical engineering and food processing. The effects of two important factors that strongly affect the dynamics of a single acoustic cavitation bubble, namely, the initial bubble radius and the standoff distance, were investigated in this work. The temporal evolution of the bubble was recorded using high speed microphotography. Meanwhile, the time of bubble collapse and the characteristics of the liquid jets were analyzed. The results demonstrate that the intensity of the acoustic cavitation, which is characterized by the time of bubble collapse and the liquid jet speed, reaches the optimum level under suitable values of the initial bubble radius and the normalized standoff distance. As the initial bubble radius and the normalized standoff distance increase or decrease from the optimal values, the time of the bubble collapse increases, and the first liquid jet's speed decreases substantially, whereas the speeds of the second and third liquid jets exhibit no substantial changes. These results on bubble dynamics in an ultrasonic field are important for identifying or correcting the mechanisms of acoustic cavitation and for facilitating its optimization and application.</p>

Mass and heat transfer in audible sound driven bubbles

Abstract:Most research on sonoluminescence and sonochemistry has been conducted at acoustic frequencies above ∼20 kHz. Consequently, mathematical models for the dynamics of acoustically-driven bubbles have hardly been examined in the audible frequency spectrum. Here, we develop a new hybrid modelling approach that combines the rigour of the advection-diffusion model whilst retaining the simplicity of a reduced-order boundary layer model to predict phase-change, mass and heat transfer in an inertially collapsing bubble excited by audible sound. Differences in these approaches are explored through a thorough validation against experimental data obtained from ultra-high speed videos of bubble dynamics at 17.8 kHz. Our results indicate that, while the boundary layer model agrees well with the advection-diffusion model at high driving frequencies, there are significant deviations at lower frequencies, where the boundary layer model overpredicts parameters such as bubble size and quantity of trapped vapour while underpredicting others such as temperature and pressure. These deviations at lower frequencies is caused by an inaccurate estimation of the boundary layer thickness originating from the time-scale competition between diffusion and fast bubble wall motion. Our work questions the suitability of existing reduced-order models developed for ultrasonic frequencies when applied to the audible range, reinforcing that further research in the audible range is needed.

Abstract:With the appropriate approximation, we have formulated the equation of multibubble motion for two cases: a filament of bubbles and a small spherical cluster of bubbles. Our results have yielded a collective mode of bubble motion in which individual bubbles of similar size expand and compress almost simultaneously. Each vibrating bubble radiates sound waves and originates the radiation sound pressure, which affects the motion of the other bubbles. The numerical simulation has revealed that this interaction suppresses single-bubble motion and tends to homogeneously spread the energy of the acoustic standing wave to each individual bubble.

Abstract:Cavitation and its effects are well investigated, especially single bubble cavitation and its collapse near rigid and elastic boundaries. In our current article, we investigated novel experiments of a single cavitation bubble near an oscillatory boundary. We generated the cavitation bubble by laser focusing in water. A flat glass plate was fixed to the shaft of the magnetostriction oscillator coil. We investigated the dynamics of bubbles at two relative wall distances (ratio of the distance between the bubble center and plate surface to the maximum radius of the bubble) of the bubble from the glass plate in combination with four modes of oscillation. Each mode has specific frequency and amplitude of oscillation. The high-speed camera captured the dynamics of the bubble using the back-illumination method with a framing rate of 120Kfps and simultaneously we used an optical CMOS sensor to measure the oscillation of the glass plate. We presented a clear comparison among the bubble dynamics near stationary and oscillating plates with parameters such as oscillating modes and direction. We correlated the dynamics of the bubble with the motion of the plate. In addition, we highlighted the differences including the characteristics of bubble shape and jetting that occurred during the collapse phase. The comparison of the time histories of the bubble's equivalent size postulated that the bubble's collapse times vary significantly in some cases compared to the bubble's dynamics near the stationary plate. In all cases, we noticed the shortening of the bubble's collapsing time, i.e. accelerated collapses. In our findings, we noticed a collapse times reduction of about 4–15%. Our finding signifies the importance of introducing the oscillation of the boundaries to obtain effective energy concentration over the time during the collapse. Our study also suggests that forced oscillation of boundaries is undesirable for destructive cavitation effects. The method we suggested for the manipulation of bubble dynamics holds potential for enhancing the efficiency of applications such as lithotripsy in biomedical devices, actuation and micro pumping in microfluidic devices, and effective semiconductor surface cleaning. Not but least, obtained results can be used as benchmark in future for validating numerical methods.

Abstract:The cavitation dynamics of an air-vapor mixture bubble with ultrasonic excitation can be greatly affected by the equation of state (EOS) for the interior gases. To simulate the cavitation dynamics, the Gilmore-Akulichev equation was coupled with the Peng–Robinson (PR) EOS or the Van der Waals (vdW) EOS. In this study, the thermodynamic properties of air and water vapor predicted by the PR and vdW EOS were first compared, and the results showed that the PR EOS gives a more accurate estimation of the gases within the bubble due to the less deviation from the experimental values. Moreover, the acoustic cavitation characteristics predicted by the Gilmore-PR model were compared to the Gilmore-vdW model, including the bubble collapse strength, the temperature, pressure and number of water molecules within the bubble. The results indicated that a stronger bubble collapse was predicted by the Gilmore-PR model rather than the Gilmore-vdW model, with higher temperature and pressure, as well as more water molecules within the collapsing bubble. More importantly, it was found that the differences between both models increase at higher ultrasound amplitudes or lower ultrasound frequencies while decreasing as the initial bubble radius and the liquid parameters ( e.g. , surface tension, viscosity and temperature of the surrounding liquid) increase. This study might offer important insights into the effects of the EOS for interior gases on the cavitation bubble dynamics and the resultant acoustic cavitation-associated effects, contributing to further optimization of its applications in sonochemistry and biomedicine.

Abstract:Thermodynamic effects delay the growth of cavitation bubbles and may accumulate to a considerable level in a bubbly cloud. Under thermo-sensitive conditions, due to thermo- dynamic effects, a bubbly cloud is often believed to behave similarly to a single cavitation bubble with respect to its shape, oscillation, etc. Discrepancies in thermodynamic effects on cavitating flows in previous experimental studies may result from the lack of control of non-dimensional parameter groups under this special condition. In the present paper we first derive the non-dimensional parameter groups from the dynamics of a single cavitation bubble traveling through a Venturi tube. Among them, three major non-dimensional pa- rameters are proposed for similitude conditions of Venturi cavitation experiments between different liquids, namely, the thermodynamic parameter, the Reynolds number, and the rel- ative cavitation number. Our theory is validated with systematic experiments of Venturi cavitation in water, Freon 113 and fluoroketone in a small-scale closed-circuit cavitation tunnel under well-controlled conditions. Simultaneous high-speed observations from top and front views provide improved measurement of the cavitation characteristics. By com- paring the variations of the attached cavity lengths and their oscillation frequencies, we successfully achieve similarities between different working liquids. The results are of par- ticular importance for surrogates, when the original working liquid is too costly or too hazardous, e.g. cryogenic liquid hydrogen LH2 or liquid oxygen LO2.
