Abstract:For an ideal $I$ in a Noetherian ring $R$, we introduce and study its conductor as a tool to explore the Rees algebra of $I$. The conductor of $I$ is an ideal $C(I)\subset R$ obtained from the defining ideals of the Rees algebra and the symmetric algebra of $I$ by a colon operation. Using this concept we investigate when adding an element to an ideal preserves the property of being of linear type. In this regard, a generalization of a result by Valla in terms of the conductor ideal is presented. When the conductor of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring is the graded maximal ideal, a criteria is given for when the Rees algebra and the symmetric algebra have the same Krull dimension. Finally, noting the fact that the conductor of a monomial ideal is a monomial ideal, the conductor of some families of monomial ideals, namely bounded Veronese ideals and edge ideals of graphs, are determined.

Abstract:Homogeneous, zero temperature scaling solutions with Bianchi VII spatial geometry are constructed in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory. They correspond to quantum critical saddle points with helical symmetry at finite density. Assuming $AdS_{5}$ UV asymptotics, the small frequency/(temperature) dependence of the AC/(DC) electric conductivity along the director of the helix are computed. A large class of insulating and conducting anisotropic phases is found, as well as isotropic, metallic phases. Conduction can be dominated by dissipation due to weak breaking of translation symmetry or by a quantum critical current.

Abstract:For Morse-Smale pairs on a smooth, closed manifold the Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex can be defined. The associated Morse homology is isomorphic to the singular homology of the manifold and yields the classical Morse relations for Morse functions. A similar approach can be used to define homological invariants for isolated invariant sets of flows on a smooth manifold, which gives an analogue of the Conley index and the Morse-Conley relations. The approach will be referred to as Morse-Conley-Floer homology.

Abstract:It is indisputable that the search for high-temperature superconductivity has stimulated the work on low-dimensional organic conductors at its beginning. Since the discovery of true metal-like conduction in molecular compounds more than 50 years ago, it appeared that the chemical composition and the quasi one-dimensional crystalline structure of these conductors were determining factors for their physical properties; materials with incommensurate conduction band filling favoring the low-dimensional electron-phonon diverging channel and the establishment of the Peierls superstructure and more rarely superconductivity at low temperature, while those with commensurate band filling favor either magnetic insulating or superconducting states depending on the intensity of the coupling between conductive chains. In addition, the simple structures of these materials have allowed the development of theoretical models in close cooperation with almost all experimental findings. Even though these materials have not yet given rise to true high-temperature superconductivity, the wealth of their physical properties makes them systems of choice in the field of condensed matter physics due to their original properties and their educational qualities. Research efforts continue in this field. The present retrospective, which does not attempt to be an exhaustive review of the field, provides a set of experimental findings alluding to the theoretical development while a forthcoming article will address in more details the theoretical aspect of low dimensional conductors and superconductors.

The perfect conductivity problem with arbitrary vanishing orders and non-trivial topology

Abstract:The perfect conductivity problem concerns optimal bounds for the magnitude of an electric field in the presence of almost touching perfect conductors. This reduces to obtaining gradient estimates for harmonic functions with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the narrow region between the conductors. In this paper we extend estimates of Bao-Li-Yin to deal with the case when the boundaries of the conductors are given by graphs with arbitrary vanishing orders. Our estimates allow us to deal with globally defined narrow regions with possibly non-trivial topology. We also prove the sharpness of our estimates in terms of the distance between the perfect conductors. The precise optimality statement we give is new even in the setting of Bao-Li-Yin.

Bounds and anomalies of inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effects

Abstract:It is well recognized that interpreting transport experiment results can be challenging when the samples being measured are spatially nonuniform. However, quantitative understanding on the differences between measured and actual transport coefficients, especially the Hall effects, in inhomogeneous systems is lacking. In this work we use homogenization theory to find exact bounds of the measured or homogenized anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) in inhomogeneous conductors under minimal assumptions. In particular, we prove that the homogenized AHC cannot exceed the bounds of the local AHC. However, in common experimental setups, anomalies that appear to violate the above bounds can occur, with a popular example being the "humps" or "dips" of the Hall hysteresis curves usually ascribed to the topological Hall effect (THE). We give two examples showing how such apparent anomalies could be caused by different types of inhomogeneities and discuss their relevance in experiments.

Abstract:It is known that, for $C$ an abelian category and $I$ small, the functor category $C^I$ is again abelian; thus we can do homology in such categories, and examine how it relates to homology in $C$ itself. However, there does not seem to be any good reference collecting these ideas together. This article seeks to fill the gap by showing that homology in $C^I$ behaves as one would expect.

Abstract:We study the phase structure and charge transport at finite temperature and chemical potential in the non-Hermitian PT-symmetric holographic model of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1912.06647" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1912.06647">arXiv:1912.06647</a>. The non-Hermitian PT-symmetric deformation is realized by promoting the parameter of a global U(1) symmetry to a complex number. Depending on the strength of the deformation, we find three phases: stable PT-symmetric phase, unstable PT-symmetric phase, and an unstable PT-symmetry broken phase. In the three phases, the square of the condensate and also the spectral weight of the AC conductivity at zero frequency are, respectively, positive, negative, and complex. We check that the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule for the AC conductivity holds in all the three phases. We also investigate a complexified U(1) rotor model with PT-symmetric deformation, derive its phase structure and condensation pattern, and find a zero frequency spectral weight analogous to the holographic model.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a cohomology theory of a left-symmetric conformal algebra and study its some applications. We define the cohomology of a left-symmetric conformal algebra, and then give an isomorphism between the cohomology spaces of the left-symmetric conformal algebra and its sub-adjacent Lie conformal algebra. As applications of the cohomology theory, we study linear deformations, formal $1$-parameter deformations, $T^*$-extensions of a left-symmetric conformal algebra respectively and obtain some properties.

Chai's conjectures on base change conductors

Abstract:The base change conductor is an invariant introduced by Chai which measures the failure of a semiabelian variety to have semiabelian reduction. We investigate the behaviour of this invariant in short exact sequences, as well as under duality and isogeny. Our results imply Chai's conjecture on the additivity of the base change conductor in short exact sequences, while also showing that a proposed generalisation of this conjecture fails. We use similar methods to show that the base change conductor is invariant under duality of Abelian varieties in equal positive characteristic (answering a question of Chai), as well as giving a new short proof of a formula due to Chai, Yu, and de Shalit which expresses the base change conductor of a torus in terms of its (rational) cocharacter module.

Abstract:For a constructible etale sheaf on a smooth variety of positive characteristic ramified along an effective divisor, the largest slope in Abbes and Saito's ramification theory of the sheaf gives a divisor with rational coefficients called the conductor divisor. In this article, we prove decreasing properties of the conductor divisor after pull-backs. The main ingredient behind is the construction of etale sheaves with pure ramifications. As applications, we first prove a lower semi-continuity property for conductors of etale sheaves on relative curves in the equal characteristic case, which supplement Deligne and Laumon's lower semi-continuity property of Swan conductors and is also an l-adic analogue of Andre's semi-continuity result of Poincare-Katz ranks for meromorphic connections on complex relative curves. Secondly, we give a ramification bound for the nearby cycle complex of an etale sheaf ramified along the special fiber of a regular scheme semi-stable over an equal characteristic henselian trait, which extends a main result in a joint work with Teyssie and answers a conjecture of Leal in a geometric situation.

Abstract:Topological structure of translation-invariant noncommutative Yang-Mills theories are studied by means of a cohomology theory, so called star-cohomology, which plays an intermediate role between de Rham and cyclic (co)homology theory for noncommutative algebras and gives rise to a cohomological formulation comparable to Seiberg-Witten map.

Abstract:Deep Very Large Array radio observations are presented for the REFLEX clusters RXCJ0437.1+0043 and RXCJ1314.4-2515. They are at similar distance and show similar X-ray luminosity, but they are quite different in X-ray structure. Indeed RXCJ0437.1+0043 is regular and relaxed, whereas RXCJ1314.4-2515 is characterized by substructure and possible merging processes. The radio images reveal no diffuse emission in RXCJ0437.1+0043, and a complex diffuse structure in RXCJ1314.4-2515. The diffuse source in the latter cluster consists of a central radio halo which extends to the West toward the cluster periphery and bends to the North to form a possible relic. Another extended source is detected in the eastern cluster peripheral region. Although there could be plausible optical identifications for this source, it might also be a relic candidate owing to its very steep spectrum. The present results confirm the tight link between diffuse cluster radio sources and cluster merger processes.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to homology groups of cubical sets with coefficients in contravariant systems of Abelian groups. The study is based on the proof of the assertion that the homology groups of the category of cubes with coefficients in the diagram of Abelian groups are isomorphic to the homology groups of normalized complex of the cubical Abelian group corresponding to this diagram. The main result shows that the homology groups of a cubical set with coefficients in a contravariant system of Abelian groups are isomorphic to the values of left derived functors of the colimit functor on this contravariant system. This is used to obtain the isomorphism criterion for homology groups of cubical sets with coefficients in contravariant systems, and also to construct spectral sequences for the covering of a cubical set and for a morphism between cubical sets. This version of the preprint contains a refinement of the proof of Lemma 3.2 corresponding to Lemma 4 from the paper of the same name published in the journal Appl. Category. Struct. 27, 199-216 (2019).

Abstract:Etale groupoids arise naturally as models for leaf spaces of foliations, for orbifolds, and for orbit spaces of discrete group actions. In this paper we introduce a sheaf homology theory for etale groupoids. We prove its invariance under Morita equivalence, as well as Verdier duality between Haefliger cohomology and this homology. We also discuss the relation to the cyclic and Hochschild homologies of Connes' convolution algebra of the groupoid, and derive some spectral sequences which serve as a tool for the computation of these homologies.

Homogenization Modeling and Effective Mechanical Constants for Em Composite Conductor with Cooling Channel

Abstract:A homogenization modeling to predict the effective mechanical properties of electric machinery composite conductor consisting of metallic core with cooling channel, and multi-layer of insulating materials was presented. A two-level homogenization scheme to model complex composite with multi-phase materials and the validation of using finite element method was developed. Composite cylinder assembly model was adopted in the Level 1homogenization for the metallic core and the cooling channel was analyzed as a fiber void with null material properties. The effective mechanical properties of the composite insulation layers were homogenized by smearing the properties of the multiple insulation layers of bonding, insulation and insulation–fiber-reinforced composite. Level 2 homogenization derived nine effective mechanical constants for conductor through a combined homogenization sequences. The good comparisons between the analytical predictions and the results obtained from the finite element analyses demonstrated the applicability of the model.
A family of repulsive neutral conductor geometries via abstract vector spaces

Abstract:Recently it was shown that it is possible for a neutral, isolated conductor to repel a point charge (or, a point dipole). Here we prove this fact using general properties of vectors and operators in an inner-product space. We find that a family of neutral, isolated conducting surface geometries, whose shape lies somewhere between a hemispherical bowl and an ovoid, will repel a point charge. In addition, we find another family of surfaces (with a different shape) that will repel a point dipole. The latter geometry can lead to Casimir repulsion.

Abstract:Canadian Journal of Physics, Ahead of Print. We explore a holographic superconductor model in which a real scalar field is nonminimally coupled to a gauge field. We consider several types of the nonminimal coupling function h(ψ) including exponential, hyperbolic (cosh), power-law, and fractional forms. We investigate the influences of the nonminimal coupling parameter α on condensation, critical temperature, and conductivity. We can categorize our results in two groups. In the first group, conductor/superconductor phase transition is easier to occur for larger values of α, while in the second group stronger effects of the nonminimal coupling makes the formation of scalar hair harder. Although the real and imaginary parts of conductivity are impressed by different forms of h(ψ), they follow some universal behaviors such as connecting with each other through Kramers–Kronig relation in ω → 0 limit or the appearance of gap frequency at low temperatures around ωg ∼ 8Tc, which shifts to larger values by increasing the strength of α. Among all forms of h(ψ) we observe that h(ψ) = 1 + αψ2 gives us better information in wide range of nonminimal coupling constant and temperature. Choosing the best form of h(ψ), we construct a family of solutions for holographic conductor/superconductor phase transitions to discover the effect of the hyperscaling violation when the gauge and scalar fields are nonminimally coupled. we find that the critical temperature increases for higher effects of hyperscaling violation θ and nonminimal coupling constant α. By increasing these two parameters, we obtain lower values of condensation which means that conductor/superconductor phase transition will acquire easier. Furthermore, we understand that the hyperscaling violation affects the conductivity σ of the holographic superconductors and changes the expected relation in the gap frequency. Some universal behaviors like infinite DC conductivity are observed. In addition, we consider a five-dimensional Gauss–Bonnet (GB) black hole with a flat horizon. We find out that the critical temperature decreases for larger values of GB coupling constant, λ, or smaller values of nonminimal coupling constant, α, which means that the condensation is harder to form. Moreover, we study the electrical conductivity in the holographic setup. We observe that the gap frequency shifts to larger values for stronger λ, and becomes flat by increasing α.
