Abstract:The degenerate affine and affine BMW algebras arise naturally in the context of Schur-Weyl duality for orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras and quantum groups, respectively. Cyclotomic BMW algebras, affine Hecke algebras, cyclotomic Hecke algebras, and their degenerate versions are quotients. In this paper the theory is unified by treating the orthogonal and symplectic cases simultaneously; we make an exact parallel between the degenerate affine and affine cases via a new algebra which takes the role of the affine braid group for the degenerate setting. A main result of this paper is an identification of the centers of the affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras in terms of rings of symmetric functions which satisfy a "cancellation property" or "wheel condition" (in the degenerate case, a reformulation of a result of Nazarov). Miraculously, these same rings also arise in Schubert calculus, as the cohomology and K-theory of isotropic Grassmanians and symplectic loop Grassmanians. We also establish new intertwiner-like identities which, when projected to the center, produce the recursions for central elements given previously by Nazarov for degenerate affine BMW algebras, and by Beliakova-Blanchet for affine BMW algebras.

Abstract:In this project, we will study the Brauer group that was first defined by R. Brauer. The elements of the Brauer group are the equivalence classes of finite dimensional central simple algebra. Therefore understanding the structure of the Brauer group of a field is equivalent to a complete classification of finite dimensional central division algebras over the field. One of the important achievements of algebra and number theory in the last century is the determination of Br(Q), the Brauer group of rational numbers. The aim of this dissertation is to review this project, i.e., determining Br(Q). There are three main steps. The first step is to determine Br(R), the Brauer group of real numbers. The second step is to identify Br(k_\nu), the Brauer group of the local fields. The third step is to construct two maps Br(Q) to Br(R) and Br(Q) to Br(Q_p) and to use these two maps to understand Br(Q). This dissertation completed the first two steps of this enormous project. To the author's knowledge, in literature there is no document including all the details of determining Br(Q) and most of them are written from a advanced perspective that requires the knowledge of class field theory and cohomology. The goal of this document is to develop the result in a relatively elementary way. The project mainly follows the logic of the book [6], but significant amount of details are added and some proofs are originated by the author, for example, 1.2.6, 1.4.2(ii), 4.2.6, and maximality and uniqueness of 5.5.12.

Abstract:We define the affine Frobenius Brauer category $\mathcal{AB}(A, -^\star)$ associated to each symmetric involutive Frobenius superalgebra $A$. We then define an action of these categories on the categories of finite-dimensional supermodules for orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras defined over $A$. The case where $A$ is the base field recovers the known action of the affine Brauer category on categories of supermodules for orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras. The definition and associated action of $\mathcal{AB}(A, -^\star)$ are both novel when $A$ is e.g. the quaternions $\mathbb{H}$, a finite group algebra, a zigzag superalgebra, or a truncated polynomial algebra. Finally, we state a conjecture for bases of hom-spaces in $\mathcal{AB}(A, -^\star)$ and outline a potential proof strategy.

The Representations of the Brauer-Chen Algebra

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the structure and representation theory of the Brauer algebra associated to a complex reflection group (here called the Brauer-Chen algebra), defined by Chen in 2011. We prove that it is semisimple and provide a construction for its simple modules for generic values of the parameters, in a uniform way for all complex reflection groups. We then apply these results to the cases of all irreducible complex reflection groups: for the groups in the infinite series, we obtain a numerical formula for the dimension of the corresponding Brauer algebra, and for all exceptional complex reflection groups, we compute the dimension of the corresponding Brauer algebra explicitly, using computational methods. We also obtain a uniformly defined basis for the Brauer algebra of any complex reflection group, defined over a field. Finally, we determine for which complex reflection groups the corresponding Brauer algebra is a free module over its ring of definition.

Abstract:A strict monoidal category referred to as affine Brauer category $\mathcal{AB}$ is introduced over a commutative ring $\kappa$ containing multiplicative identity $1$ and invertible element $2$. We prove that morphism spaces in $\mathcal{AB}$ are free over $\kappa$. The cyclotomic (or level $k$) Brauer category $\mathcal{CB}^f(\omega)$ is a quotient category of $\mathcal{AB}$. We prove that any morphism space in $\mathcal{CB}^f(\omega)$ is free over $\kappa$ with maximal rank if and only if the $\mathbf u$-admissible condition holds in the sense of (1.30). Affine Nazarov-Wenzl algebras and cyclotomic Nazarov-Wenzl algebras will be realized as certain endomorphism algebras in $\mathcal{AB}$ and $\mathcal{CB}^f(\omega)$, respectively. We will establish higher Schur-Weyl duality between cyclotomic Nazarov-Wenzl algebras and parabolic BGG categories $\mathcal O$ associated to symplectic and orthogonal Lie algebras over the complex field $\mathbb C$. This enables us to use standard arguments in [1,26,27] to compute decomposition matrices of cyclotomic Nazarov-Wenzl algebras. The level two case was considered by Ehrig and Stroppel in [14].

Abstract:Let $k$ be a Brauer field, that is, a field over which every diagonal form in sufficiently many variables has a nonzero solution; for instance, $k$ could be an imaginary quadratic number field. Brauer proved that if $f_1, \ldots, f_r$ are homogeneous polynomials on a $k$-vector space $V$ of degrees $d_1, \ldots, d_r$, then the variety $Z$ defined by the $f_i$'s has a non-trivial $k$-point, provided that $\dim{V}$ is sufficiently large compared to the $d_i$'s and $k$. We offer two improvements to this theorem, assuming $k$ is infinite. First, we show that the Zariski closure of the set $Z(k)$ of $k$-points has codimension $<C$, where $C$ is a constant depending only on the $d_i$'s and $k$. And second, we show that if the strength of the $f_i$'s is sufficiently large in terms of the $d_i$'s and $k$, then $Z(k)$ is actually Zariski dense in $Z$. The proofs rely on recent work of Ananyan and Hochster on high strength polynomials.

On the BCSS Proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra

Abstract:Section 10.4 of the 1998 Springer-Verlag book {\em Complexity and Real Computation}, by Blum, Cucker, Shub, and Smale, contains a particularly elegant proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra: The central idea of the proof naturally leads to a homotopy continuation algorithm for finding the roots of univariate polynomials, and extends naturally to a proof of Bézout's Theorem (on the number of roots of systems of $n$ equations in $n$ unknowns). We present a more detailed version of the BCSS Proof which is hopefully useful for students and researchers not familiar with algebraic geometry. So while there are no new results in this paper, the exposition is arguably more elementary. Any errors here are solely the responsibility of the current author.

Abstract:We define a degenerate affine version of the walled Brauer algebra, that has the same role plaid by the degenerate affine Hecke algebra for the symmetric group algebra. We use it to prove a higher level mixed Schur-Weyl duality for gl_N. We consider then families of cyclotomic quotients of level two which appear naturally in Lie theory and we prove that they inherit from there a natural grading and a graded cellular structure.

Abstract:We construct a normal form for the walled Brauer algebra, together with the reduction algorithm. We apply normal form to calculate the numbers of monomials in generators with minimal length. We further utilize normal form to give explicit expressions for a generating set and annihilator ideal of a particular cyclic vector in a cell module.

Fractional Brauer configuration algebras I: definitions and examples

Abstract:In 2017, Green and Schroll introduced a generalization of Brauer graph algebras which they call Brauer configuration algebras. In the present paper, we further generalize Brauer configuration algebras to fractional Brauer configuration algebras by generalizing Brauer configurations to fractional Brauer configurations. The fractional Brauer configuration algebras are locally bounded but neither finite-dimensional nor symmetric in general. We show that if the fractional Brauer configuration is of type S (resp. of type MS), then the corresponding fractional Brauer configuration algebra is a locally bounded Frobenius algebra (resp. a locally bounded special multiserial Frobenius algebra). Moreover, we show that over an algebraically closed field, the class of finite-dimensional indecomposable representation-finite fractional Brauer configuration algebras in type S coincides with the class of basic indecomposable finite-dimensional standard representation-finite self-injective algebras.

Abstract:Cayley and nilpotent graphs arise from the interaction between graph theory and algebra and are used to visualize the structures of some algebraic objects as groups and commutative rings. On the other hand, Green and Schroll introduced Brauer graph algebras and Brauer configuration algebras to investigate the algebras of tame and wild representation types. An appropriated system of multisets (called a Brauer configuration) induces these algebras via a suitable bounded quiver (or bounded directed graph), and the combinatorial properties of such multisets describe corresponding indecomposable projective modules, the dimensions of the algebras and their centers. Undirected graphs are examples of Brauer configuration messages, and the description of the related data for their induced Brauer configuration algebras is said to be the Brauer analysis of the graph. This paper gives closed formulas for the dimensions of Brauer configuration algebras (and their centers) induced by Cayley and nilpotent graphs defined by some finite groups and finite commutative rings. These procedures allow us to give examples of Hamiltonian digraph constructions based on Cayley graphs. As an application, some quantum entangled states (e.g., Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger and Dicke states) are described and analyzed as suitable Brauer messages.

Closed Form of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Formula for the Generators of Semisimple Complex Lie Algebras

Abstract:Recently it has been introduced an algorithm Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula, which extends the Van-Brunt and Visser recent results, leading to new closed forms of BCH formula. More recently, it has been shown that there are {\it 13 types} of such commutator algebras. We show, by providing the explicit solutions, that these include the generators of the semisimple complex Lie algebras. More precisely, for any pair, $X$, $Y$ of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y)=\exp(W) $$ The derivation of such closed forms follows, in part, by using the above mentioned recent results. The complete derivation is provided by considering the structure of of the root system. Furthermore, if $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ are three generators of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find, for a wide class of cases, $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$ and $Z$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y) \exp(Z)=\exp(W) $$ It turns out that the relevant commutator algebras are {\it type 1c-i}, {\it type 4} and {\it type 5}. A key result concerns an iterative application of the algorithm leading to relevant extensions of the cases admitting closed forms of the BCH formula. Here we provide the main steps of such an iteration that will be developed in a forthcoming paper.

The centre of the modular affine vertex algebra

Abstract:The Feigin--Frenkel theorem states that, over the complex numbers, the centre of the universal affine vertex algebra at the critical level is an infinite rank polynomial algebra. The first author and W.~Wang observed that in positive characteristics, the universal affine vertex algebra contains a large central subalgebra known as the $p$-centre. They conjectured that at the critical level the centre should be generated by the Feigin--Frenkel centre and the $p$-centre. In this paper we prove the conjecture for classical simple Lie algebras for $p$ larger than the Coxeter number, and for exceptional Lie algebras in large characteristics. Finally, we give an example which shows that at non-critical level the center is larger than the $p$-centre.

Abstract:This paper investigates centralizers and twisted centralizers in degenerate and non-degenerate Clifford (geometric) algebras. We provide an explicit form of the centralizers and twisted centralizers of the subspaces of fixed grades, subspaces determined by the grade involution and the reversion, and their direct sums. The results can be useful for applications of Clifford algebras in computer science, physics, and engineering.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, and let $\mathcal{X}$ be a proper regular flat scheme over $\mathcal{O}_{K}$ with a generic fiber $X$ geometrically connected over $K$. We prove that there is an exact sequence up to finite groups $0\rightarrow Sha(Pic_{X/K}^0)\rightarrow Br(\mathcal{X})\rightarrow Br(X_{\bar{K}})^{G_K}\rightarrow 0$, which generalizes a theorem of Artin and Grothendieck for arithmetic surfaces to arbitrary dimensions. Consequently, we reduce Artin's question regarding the finiteness of $Br(\mathcal{X})$ for proper regular flat schemes $\mathcal{X}$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ to $3$-dimensional arithmetic schemes.
