Abstract:Let $X=G/H$ be a spherical variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\ge0$. We compute the $p'$-parts of $\pi_0(H)$ and $\pi_1(X)$ from the spherical system of $X$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds. Some relationships between the growth of fundamental groups and the volume growth of universal covers of Finsler manifolds are found. Some estimates of entropies and the number of generators of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are given. Moreover, the quasi-isometry and the geometric norm in Finsler geometry are considered.

Abstract:We investigate the space $X$ of unitary hermitian matrices over $\frp$-adic fields through spherical functions. First we consider Cartan decomposition of $X$, and give precise representatives for fields with odd residual characteristic, i.e., $2\notin \frp$. In the latter half we assume odd residual characteristic, and give explicit formulas of typical spherical functions on $X$, where Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials of type $C_n$ appear as a main term, parametrization of all the spherical functions. By spherical Fourier transform, we show the Schwartz space $\SKX$ is a free Hecke algebra $\hec$-module of rank $2^n$, where $2n$ is the size of matrices in $X$, and give the explicit Plancherel formula on $\SKX$.

Abstract:We show that the $p$-group complex of a finite group $G$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension at most $n$ if $G$ contains a self-centralising normal subgroup $H$ which is isomorphic to a group of Lie type and Lie rank $n$ in characteristic $p$. If in addition every order-$p$ element of $G$ induces an inner or field automorphism on $H$, the $p$-group complex of $G$ is $G$-homotopy equivalent to a spherical complex obtained from the Tits building of $H$.

Remarks on $p$-primary torsion of the Brauer group

Abstract:For a smooth and proper variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, the group $Br(X)[p^\infty]$ is a direct sum of finitely many copies of $\mathbb{Q}_p/\mathbb{Z}_p$ and an abelian group of finite exponent. The latter is an extension of a finite group $J$ by the group of $k$-points of a connected commutative unipotent algebraic group $U$. In this paper we show that (1) if $X$ is ordinary, then $U = 0$; (2) if $X$ is a surface, then $J$ is the Pontryagin dual of $NS(X)[p^\infty]$; (3) if $X$ is an abelian variety, then $J = 0$. Using Crew's formula, we compute $Br(X)[p^\infty]$ for Enriques surfaces and abelian $3$-folds. Generalizing a result of Ogus, we give a criterion for the injectivity of the canonical map from flat to crystalline cohomology in degree $2$.

Abstract:We give explicit models for spherical functions on $p$-adic symmetric spaces $X=H\backslash G$ for pairs of $p$-adic groups $(G,H)$ of the form $(\mathrm{U}(2r),\mathrm{U}(r)\times \mathrm{U}(r)),$ $(\mathrm{O}(2r),\mathrm{O}(r)\times \mathrm{O}(r)),$ $(\mathrm{Sp}(4r),\mathrm{Sp}(2r)\times\mathrm{Sp}(2r))),$ $(\mathrm{U}(2r+1),\mathrm{U}(r+1)\times \mathrm{U}(r)),$ and $ (\mathrm{O}(2r+1),\mathrm{O}(r+1)\times \mathrm{O}(r)).$ As an application, we completely describe their Hecke module structure.

On $B$-root subgroups on horospherical varieties

Abstract:Given a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ and a spherical $G$-variety $X$, a $B$-root subgroup on $X$ is a one-parameter additive group of automorphisms of $X$ normalized by a Borel subgroup $B \subset G$. We obtain a complete description of all $B$-root subgroups on a certain open subset of $X$. When $X$ is horospherical and either complete or contains a unique closed $G$-orbit, we determine all $G$-stable prime divisors in $X$ that can be connected with the open $G$-orbit via the action of a suitable $B$-root subgroup.

The geometric fundamental group of the affine line over a finite field

Abstract:The affine line and the punctured affine line over a finite field F are taken as benchmarks for the problem of describing geometric étale fundamental groups. To this end, using a reformulation of Tannaka duality we construct for a projective variety X a (non-commutative) universal affine pro-algebraic group Lu(X), such that for any given affine subvariety U of X any finite and étale Galois covering of U over F is a pull-back of a Galois covering of a quotient Lu(X,U) of Lu(X). Then the geometric fundamental group of U is a completion of the k-points of Lu(X,U), where k is an algebraic closure of F. We obtain explicit descriptions of the universal affine groups Lu(X,U) for U the affine line and the punctured affine line over F.

Abstract:We study the fundamental group of the $p$-subgroup complex of a finite group $G$. We show first that $\pi_1(A_3(A_{10}))$ is not a free group (here $A_{10}$ is the alternating group on $10$ letters). This is the first concrete example in the literature of a $p$-subgroup complex with non-free fundamental group. We prove that, modulo a well-known conjecture of M. Aschbacher, $\pi_1(A_p(G)) = \pi_1(A_p(S_G)) * F$, where $F$ is a free group and $\pi_1(A_p(S_G))$ is free if $S_G$ is not almost simple. Here $S_G = \Omega_1(G)/O_{p'}(\Omega_1(G))$. This result essentially reduces the study of the fundamental group of $p$-subgroup complexes to the almost simple case. We also exhibit various families of almost simple groups whose $p$-subgroup complexes have free fundamental group.

Generalised spherical minors and their relations

Abstract:Let H be a spherical subgroup of minimal rank of the semisimple simply connected complex algebraic group G. We define some functions on the homogeneous space G/H that we call generalised spherical minors. When G = H x H, we recover Fomin-Zelevinsky generalised minors. We prove that generalised spherical minors satisfy some integer coefficients polynomial relations, that extend the identities of classical generalised minors due to Fomin and Zelevinsky, and that have the shape of exchange relations of LP-algebras.

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.

Abstract:Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$ and let $G$ be a finite $p$-group. The results of Harbater, Katz and Gabber associate a $G$-cover of the projective line ramified only over $\infty$ to every $k$-linear action of $G$ on $k[[t]]$. In this paper we relate the HKG-covers to the classical problem of determining the equivariant structure of cohomologies of a curve with an action of a $p$-group. To this end, we present a new way of computing cohomologies of HKG-covers. As an application of our results, we compute the equivariant structure of the de Rham cohomology of Klein four covers in characteristic $2$.

On the motivic description of truncated fundamental group rings

Abstract:A topological theorem that appears in a paper by Deligne-Goncharov (and which they attribute to Beilinson) states the following. Let $(X,*)$ be a path connected pointed space with a reasonable topology and denote by $I$ the augmentation ideal of its fundamental group ring. Then for every field F and positive integer n, the space of F-valued linear forms on $ I/I^{n+1}$ is naturally isomorphic to $H^n(X^n,X(n,*); F)$, where $X(n,*)$ is an explicitly defined subspace of $X^n$. We here construct a simple isomorphism between $I/I^{n+1}$ and $H_n(X^n,X(n,*); \mathbf{Z})$ and express the maps that define the Hopf algebra structure on the $I$-adic completion of the fundamental group ring of $(X,*)$ in these terms.

Abstract:Consider a generalized Grassmannian G/P⊂P embedded in a projective space by a complete linear system of a positive generator of the Picard group. For a very general hypersurface H⊂P , we study subvarieties of G/P∩H that are not of general type (or not of positive geometric genus). When the degree of the hypersurface is not small, we show that, under a certain condition on the parabolic subgroup P , such subvarieties are union of lines. Our result is a generalization of Clemens-Ran's result concerning G/P=Pn .

Abstract:Quotient grading classes are essential participants in the computation of the intrinsic fundamental group $\pi_1(A)$ of an algebra $A$. In order to study quotient gradings of a finite-dimensional semisimple complex algebra $A$ it is sufficient to understand the quotient gradings of twisted gradings. We establish the graded structure of such quotients using Mackey's obstruction class. Then, for matrix algebras $A=M_n(\mathbb{C})$ we tie up the concepts of braces, group-theoretic Lagrangians and elementary crossed products. We also manage to compute the intrinsic fundamental group of the diagonal algebras $A=\mathbb{C} ^4$ and $A=\mathbb{C} ^5$.

On p-torsions of geometric Brauer groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective integral variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. We show that the finiteness of the exponent of the $p$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is equivalent to the Tate conjecture for divisors, generalizing D'Addezio's theorem for abelian varieties to arbitrary smooth projective varieties. In combination with the Leray spectral sequence for rigid cohomology derived from the Berthelot conjecture recently proved by Ertl-Vezzani, we show that the cokernel of $\mathrm{Br}_{\mathrm{nr}}(K(X)) \rightarrow \mathrm{Br}(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ is of finite exponent. This completes the $p$-primary part of the generalization of Artin-Grothendieck's theorem on relations between Brauer groups and Tate-Shafarevich groups to higher relative dimensions.

Abstract:We compute the fundamental group of the Galois cover of a surface of degree~$8$, with singularities of degree $4$, whose degeneration envelope is isomorphic to an octahedron. The group is shown to be a metabelian group of order $2^{23}$. The computation amalgamates local groups, classified elsewhere, by an iterative combination of computational and group theoretic methods. Three simplified surfaces, for which the fundamental group of the Galois cover is trivial, demonstrate how nontrivial cycles in the degenerated surface complicate the computation.

Abstract:We determine the 0-th Hochschild homology of the associative algebra of simplicial cochains valued in a PID: it consists of the ``finite-type" homotopy invariants of free loops, equivalently finite-type class functions on the fundamental group. One major motivation for this calculation is joint work in progress aiming to geometrically construct invariants of links in the 3-sphere as well as other $3$-manifolds, and to realize Milnor's linking numbers as evaluations of 0-th Hochschild homology classes.

Abstract:If $X$ is a closed $2n$-dimensional aspherical manifold, i.e., the universal cover of $X$ is contractible, then the Chern-Hopf-Thurston conjecture predicts that $(-1)^n\chi(X)\geq 0$. We prove this conjecture when $X$ is a complex projective manifold whose fundamental group admits an almost faithful linear representation over any field. In fact, we prove a much stronger statement that if $X$ is a complex projective manifold with large fundamental group and $\pi_1(X)$ admits an almost faithful linear representation, then $\chi(X, \mathcal{P})\geq 0$ for any perverse sheaf $\mathcal{P}$ on $X$. To prove this, we introduce a vanishing cycle functor of multivalued one-forms and apply techniques from non-abelian Hodge theory, both in archimedean and non-archimedean settings. These techniques allow us to deduce the desired positivity from the geometric properties of pure and mixed period maps.
