Abstract:This is Part A of four Parts dedicated to modular lattices of finite length. It builds on 1992 notes of the author (available on ResearchGate), and in so doing heeds a wish of the late Gian-Carlo Rota. Part A is in fairly final form and mainly features known material, exceptions being a short proof of the distributivity of congruence lattices of lattices, as well as the concept of a point-splitting (which applies to arbitrary partial linear spaces). The planned content of Parts B,C,D is given in the introduction of Part A. Suffice it to say that deep results from <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://C.Herrmann" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://R.Wille" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> will be treated in English for the first time. All of this (even Part A) is work in process and comments/contributions are welcome.

An Analogue of Distributivity for Ungraded Lattices

Abstract:In this paper, we study lattices that posess both the properties of being extremal (in the sense of Markowsky) and of being left modular (in the sense of Blass and Sagan). We call such lattices trim and show that they posess some additional appealing properties, analogous to those of a distributive lattice. For example, trimness is preserved under taking intervals and suitable sublattices. Trim lattices satisfy a weakened form of modularity. The order complex of a trim lattice is contractible or homotopic to a sphere; the latter holds exactly if the maximum element of the lattice is a join of atoms. Any distributive lattice is trim, but trim lattices need not be graded. The main example of ungraded trim lattices are the Tamari lattices and generalizations of them. We show that the Cambrian lattices in types A and B defined by Reading are trim; we conjecture that all Cambrian lattices are trim.
ST-Distributive and ST-Modular Lattices

Abstract:For two subsets S and T of a given lattice L, we define a relative distributive (modular) property over L, that underlies a large family including the usual class of distributive (modular) lattices. Our proposed class will be called ST-distributive (ST-modular) lattices. In this paper, we explore elemental properties of ST-distributivity (ST-modularity) and find examples of maximal S and T to form ST-distributive lattices for some non-distributive finite lattices of small order. We also characterize the maximal pairs of subsets (S,T), subject to certain constraints, that induce ST-distributivity in the lattice family M_n,n for all natural numbers n greater than or equal to 3. Afterwards, we present an application of ST-modular to convex sets and polytopes. This application has been the first example found and the main guiding light for our new definitions. The aforementioned definitions are closely related to distributive elements of Birkhoff-Gratzer and Stanley's SS-lattices.

S-Glued sums of lattices

Abstract:For many equation-theoretical questions about modular lattices, Hall and Dilworth give a useful construction: Let $L_0$ be a lattice with largest element $u_0$, $L_1$ be a lattice disjoint from $L_0$ with smallest element $v_1$, and $a \in L_0$, $b \in L_1$ such that the intervals $[a, u_0]$ and $[v_1, b]$ are isomorphic. Then, after identifying those intervals you obtain $L_0 \cup L_1$, a lattice structure whose partial order is the transitive relation generated by the partial orders of $L_0$ and $L_1$. It is modular if $L_0$ and $L_1$ are modular. Since in this construction the index set $\{0, 1\}$ is essentially a chain, this work presents a method -- termed S-glued -- whereby a general family $L_x\ (x \in S)$ of lattices can specify a lattice with the small-scale lattice structure determined by the $L_x$ and the large-scale structure determined by $S$. A crucial application is representing finite-length modular lattices using projective geometries.

An extension of Birkhoff's representation theorem to infinite distributive lattices

Abstract:Birkhoff's representation theorem for finite distributive lattices states that any finite distributive lattice is isomorphic to the lattice of order ideals (lower sets) of the partial order of the join-irreducible elements of the lattice. This theorem can be extended as follows: A non-finite distributive lattice that is locally finite and has a $\hat{0}$ is isomorphic to the lattice of finite order ideals of the partial order of the join-irreducible elements of the lattice. In addition, certain ``well ordering'' properties are shown to be equivalent to the premises of the extended theorem.

Notes on congruence lattices and lamps of slim semimodular lattices

Abstract:Since their introduction by G. Grätzer and E. Knapp in 2007, more than four dozen papers have been devoted to finite slim planar semimodular lattices (in short, SPS lattices or slim semimodular lattices) and to some related fields. In addition to distributivity, there have been seven known properties of the congruence lattices of these lattices. The first two properties were proved by G. Grätzer, the next four by the present author, while the seventh was proved jointly by G. Grätzer and the present author. Five out of the seven properties were found and proved by using lamps, which are lattice theoretic tools introduced by the present author in a 2021 paper. Here, using lamps, we present infinitely many new properties. Lamps also allow us to strengthen the seventh previously known property, and they lead to an algorithm of exponential time to decide whether a finite distributive lattice can be represented as the congruence lattice of an SPS lattice. Some new properties of lamps are also given.

Abstract:This survey of methods surrounding lattice point methods for binomial ideals begins with a leisurely treatment of the geometric combinatorics of binomial primary decomposition. It then proceeds to three independent applications whose motivations come from outside of commutative algebra: hypergeometric systems, combinatorial game theory, and chemical dynamics. The exposition is aimed at students and researchers in algebra; it includes many examples, open problems, and elementary introductions to the motivations and background from outside of algebra.

On the lattice of closed subgroups of a profinite group

Abstract:The subgroup lattice of a group is a great source of information about the structure of the group itself. The aim of this paper is to use a similar tool for studying profinite groups. In more detail, we study the lattices of closed or open subgroups of a profinite group and its relation with the whole group. We show, for example, that procyclic groups are the only profinite groups with a distributive lattice of closed or open subgroups, and we give a sharp characterization of profinite groups whose lattice of closed (or open) subgroups satisfies the Dedekind modular law; we actually give a precise description of the behaviour of modular elements of the lattice of closed subgroups. We also deal with the problem of carrying some structural information from a profinite group to another one having an isomorphic lattice of closed (or open) subgroups. Some interesting consequences and related results concerning decomposability and the number of profinite groups with a given lattice of closed (or open) subgroups are also obtained.

In particular, we find out that solvable Leibniz algebras with an upper semi-modular lattice are either almost-abelian or have an abelian ideal spanned by the elements with square zero. We also study Leibniz algebras in which every subalgebra is a weak quasi-ideal, as well as modular symmetric Leibniz algebras.

Abstract:<p>Our main goal is to develop a representation for finite distributive nearlattices through certain ordered structures. This representation generalizes the well-known representation given by Birkhoff for finite distributive lattices through finite posets. We also study finite distributive nearlattices through the concepts of dual atoms, boolean elements, complemented elements and irreducible elements. We prove that the sets of boolean elements and complemented elements form semi-boolean algebras. We show that the set of boolean elements of a finite distributive lattice is a boolean lattice.</p>

Rationality of Lorentzian Lattice CFTs And The Associated Modular Tensor Category

Abstract:We classify the irreducible modules of a rational Lorentzian lattice vertex operator algebra (LLVOA) based on an even, self-dual Lorentzian lattice $\Lambda\subset\mathbb{R}^{m,n}$ of signature $(m,n)$. We show that the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible modules of the LLVOA are in one-to-one correspondence with the equivalence classes $\Lambda_0^\circ/\Lambda_0$ for a certain subset $\Lambda_0^\circ\subset\mathbb{R}^{m,n}$ and a full rank sublattice $\Lambda_0\subset\Lambda$. We also classify the intertwining operators between the modules and calculate the fusion rules. We then describe the standard construction of modular tensor category (MTC) associated to rational LLCFTs. We explicitly construct the modular data and braiding and fusing matrices for the MTC. As a concrete example, we show that the LLCFT based on a certain even, self-dual Lorentzian lattice of signature $(m, n)$, with $m$ even, realizes the $D(m \bmod 8)$ level 1 Kac-Moody MTC.

Abstract:Complemented lattices and uniquely complemented lattices are very important, not only in mathematics, but also in physics, biology, and even in social sciences. They have been investigated for a long time, especially by Huntington, Birkhoff, Dilworth and others. And yet, on some of these structures - namely, uniquely complemented nondistributive lattices -, despite the many existing articles concerning them, we basically know very little. In this article, we situate these lattest structures in the context of complemented and uniquely complemented lattices, offering a general overview of the links between these lattices and others, close to them, such as the orthocomplemented lattices of physics as well as various other partially ordered sets. We finally show how uniquely complemented nondistributive lattices have been constructed with the technique of free lattices.

The Lattice Problem for Models of $\mathsf{PA}$

Abstract:The lattice problem for models of Peano Arithmetic ($\mathsf{PA}$) is to determine which lattices can be represented as lattices of elementary submodels of a model of $\mathsf{PA}$, or, in greater generality, for a given model $\mathcal{M}$, which lattices can be represented as interstructure lattices of elementary submodels $\mathcal{K}$ of an elementary extension $\mathcal{N}$ such that $\mathcal{M} \preccurlyeq \mathcal{K} \preccurlyeq \mathcal{N}$. The problem has been studied for the last 60 years and the results and their proofs show an interesting interplay between the model theory of PA, Ramsey style combinatorics, lattice representation theory, and elementary number theory. We present a survey of the most important results together with a detailed analysis of some special cases to explain and motivate a technique developed by James Schmerl for constructing elementary extensions with prescribed interstructure lattices. The last section is devoted to a discussion of lesser-known results about lattices of elementary submodels of countable recursively saturated models of PA.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of lattices, the modernistic lattices, and their duals, the comodernistic lattices. We show that every modernistic or comodernistic lattice has shellable order complex. We go on to exhibit a large number of examples of (co)modernistic lattices. We show comodernism for two main families of lattices that were not previously known to be shellable: the order congruence lattices of finite posets, and a weighted generalization of the k-equal partition lattices. We also exhibit many examples of (co)modernistic lattices that were already known to be shellable. To start with, the definition of modernistic is a common weakening of the definitions of semimodular and supersolvable. We thus obtain a unified proof that lattice in these classes are shellable. Subgroup lattices of solvable groups form another family of comodernistic lattices that were already proved to be shellable. We show not only that subgroup lattices of solvable groups are comodernistic, but that solvability of a group is equivalent to the comodernistic property on its subgroup lattice. Indeed, the definition of comodernistic exactly requires on every interval a lattice-theoretic analogue of the composition series in a solvable group. Thus, the relation between comodernistic lattices and solvable groups resembles, in several respects, that between supersolvable lattices and supersolvable groups.

Abstract:Birkhoff's representation theorem (Birkhoff, Duke Math J 3(3):443–454, 1937) defines a bijection between elements of a distributive lattice and the family of upper sets of an associated poset. Although not used explicitly, this result is at the backbone of the combinatorial algorithm by Irving et al. (J ACM 34(3):532-543, 1987) for maximizing a linear function over the set of stable matchings in Gale and Shapley's stable marriage model (Gale and Shapley, Am Math Monthly 69(1):9–15 1962). In this paper, we introduce a property of distributive lattices, which we term as affine representability, and show its role in efficiently solving linear optimization problems over the elements of a distributive lattice, as well as describing the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of the lattice elements. We apply this concept to the stable matching model with path-independent quota-filling choice functions, thus giving efficient algorithms and a compact polyhedral description for this model. To the best of our knowledge, this model generalizes all those for which similar results were known, and our paper is the first that proposes efficient algorithms for stable matchings with choice functions, beyond classical extensions of the Deferred Acceptance algorithm.
