Abstract:A method to calculate exact Green's functions on lattices in various dimensions is presented. Expressions in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions in one or more variables are obtained for various examples by relating the resolvent to a contour integral, evaluated using residues. Different ways of arranging the series leads to different combinations of hypergeometric functions providing identities involving generalized hypergeometric functions. The method is shown to be useful for computing Green's functions with next-nearest neighbor hopping as well.

Abstract:We consider the complexity of Green's relations when the semigroup is given by transformations on a finite set. Green's relations can be defined by reachability in the (right/left/two-sided) Cayley graph. The equivalence classes then correspond to the strongly connected components. It is not difficult to show that, in the worst case, the number of equivalence classes is in the same order of magnitude as the number of elements. Another important parameter is the maximal length of a chain of components. Our main contribution is an exponential lower bound for this parameter. There is a simple construction for an arbitrary set of generators. However, the proof for constant alphabet is rather involved. Our results also apply to automata and their syntactic semigroups.

Abstract:In this paper, we formulate the notion of split elements of a unipotent class in a connected reductive group $G$. Generalized Green functions of $G$ can be computed by using Lusztig's algorithm, if split elements exist for any unipotent class. The existence of split elements is reduced to the case where $G$ is a simply connected, almost simple group. We show, in the case of classical groups, split elements exist, which is a refinement of previous results. In the case of exceptional groups, we show the existence of split elements, possibly except one class for $G$ of type $E_7$.

Abstract:In a remarkable series of works, Guo, Phong, Song, and Sturm have obtained key uniform estimates for the Green's functions associated with certain Kähler metrics. In this note, we broaden the scope of their techniques by removing one of their assumptions and allowing the complex structure to vary. We apply our results to various families of canonical Kähler metrics.

Abstract:The Green functions were first introduced by Green to compute the character table of GLn(q) in 1955. They were later generalized by Deligne and Lusztig for an arbitrary finite group of Lie type G(q) using l-adic cohomological methods (1976). They proved that these Green functions satisfy an orthogonality relation (we call the first orthogonality relation). Ten years later Kawanaka proved that they satisfy an other orthogonality relation (we call the second orthogonality relation). In this notes, we provide a geometrical understanding of these two orthogonality relations and explain how we can see geometrically that the two orthogonality relations are in fact equivalent.

Characterization of Green's function of discrete Schrödinger operator on a finite graph by its spanning subgraphs

Abstract:The Green's function of the discrete Schödinger operator on a finite graph is considered. This setting reproduces Laplacian and signless Laplacian by adjusting appropriate potentials. We show two ways of the expression for the Green's function by using graph structures. The first way is based on the factor of the graph by subtrees which have uni-self-loops; the second way is based on that by odd unicycle graphs.

Abstract:Lusztig's algorithm of computing generalized Green functions of reductive groups involves an ambiguity of certain scalars. In this paper, for reductive groups of classical type with arbitrary characteristic, we determine those scalars explicitly, and eliminate the ambiguity. Our results imply that all the generalized Green functions of classical type are computable.

Abstract:Based on results of Digne-Michel-Lehrer (2003) we give two formulae for two-variable Green functions attached to Lusztig induction in a finite reductive group. We present applications to explicit computation of these Green functions, to conjectures of Malle and Rotilio, and to scalar products between Lusztig inductions of Gelfand-Graev characters.

Abstract:In a previous paper, "Generalized Green functions and unipotent classes for finite reductive groups, I", we have determined certain unknown scalars involved in the algorithm of computing generalized Green functions in the case of SL_n. In this paper, we consider a similar problem for the case of classical groups Sp_{2n}, SO_N with arbitrary characteristic. Our result enables us, in particular, to compute Green functions in bad characteristic case, which was not known before.

Abstract:We study the electronic properties of the generalized Fibonacci lattices generated by the inflation rule (A, B) --> (AB(n), A) with n > 1. A unified real-space renormalization-group scheme is presented for calculating the exact local Green's function at any given site. Analysis suggests that there are extended states in these lattices. Furthermore, the appearance of the extended states and the smoothness of the local density of states depends on the system parameters, implying that these exists a state transition phenomenon similar to that of the incommensurate Harper's model.

Abstract:In this paper, we will compute the characteristic polynomials for finite dimensional representations of classical complex Lie algebras and the exceptional Lie algebra of type G2, which can be obtained through the orbits of integral weights under the action of their corresponding Weyl groups and the invariant polynomial theory of the Weyl groups. We show that the characteristic polynomials can be decomposed into products of irreducible orbital factors, each of which is invariant under the action of their corresponding Weyl groups.

Abstract:The three exceptional lattices, $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$, have attracted much attention due to their anomalously dense and symmetric structures which are of critical importance in modern theoretical physics. Here, we study the electronic band structure of a single spinless quantum particle hopping between their nearest-neighbor lattice points in the tight-binding limit. Using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, we numerically sample their lattice Green's functions, densities of states, and random walk return probabilities. We find and tabulate a plethora of Van Hove singularities in the densities of states, including degenerate ones in $E_6$ and $E_7$. Finally, we use brute force enumeration to count the number of distinct closed walks of length up to eight, which gives the first eight moments of the densities of states.

Abstract:Gross, Kohnen and Zagier proved an averaged version of the algebraicity conjecture for special values of higher Green's functions on modular curves. In this work, we study an analogous problem for special values of Green's functions on hyperbolic $3$-space. We prove that their averages can be computed in terms of logarithms of primes and logarithms of units in real quadratic fields. Moreover, we study twisted averages of special values of Green's functions, which yield algebraic numbers instead of logarithms.

Abstract:By using heat kernel expansions for the Laplacian on a subgraph of a complete graph, we obtain formal expansions for the Green function of the Laplacian on a subgraph of a complete graph. We study this formal series for both the cases that the subgraph is complete and not complete, and in both cases, we obtain precise information about the convergence of the series.

Abstract:This article provides a geometric bridge between two entirely different character formulas for reductive Lie groups and answers the question posed by W.Schmid in [Sch]. A corresponding problem in the compact group setting was solved by N.Berline, E.Getzler and M.Vergne in [BGV] by an application of the theory of equivariant forms and particularly the fixed point integral localization formula. This article (besides its representation-theoretical significance) provides a whole family of examples where it is possible to localize integrals to fixed points with respect to an action of a NONcompact group. Moreover, a localization argument given here is not specific to the particular setting considered in this article and can be extended to a more general situation. There is a broadly accessible article [L] which explains how the argument works in the SL(2,R) case, where the key ideas are not obstructed by technical details and where it becomes clear how it extends to the general case.

Abstract:Let P be a second-order, linear, elliptic operator with real coefficients which is defined on a noncompact and connected Riemannian manifold M. It is well known that the equation P u = 0 in M admits a positive supersolution which is not a solution if and only if P admits a unique positive minimal Green function on M, and in this case, P is said to be subcritical in M. If P does not admit a positive Green function but admits a global positive (super)solution, then such a solution is called a ground state of P in M, and P is said to be critical in M. We prove for a critical operator P in M, the existence of a Green function which is dominated above by the ground state of P away from the singularity. Moreover, in a certain class of Green functions, such a Green function is unique, up to an addition of a product of the ground states of P and P ⋆ . Under some further assumptions, we describe the behavior at infinity of such a Green function. This result extends and sharpens the celebrated result of P. Li and L.-F. Tam concerning the existence of a symmetric Green function for the Laplace–Beltrami operator on a smooth and complete Riemannian manifold M.

Abstract:Lattice geometries and random walks on them are of great interest for their applications in different fields such as physics, chemistry, and computer science. In this work, we focus on multi-headed lattices and study properties of the Green functions for these lattices such as the associated differential equations and the P'olya numbers. In particular, we complete the analysis of three missing cases in dimensions no larger than five. Our results are built upon an automatic machinery of creative telescoping.

Abstract:Based on computeralgebra experiments we formulate a refined version of Green's conjecture and a conjecture of Schicho-Schreyer-Weimann which conjecturally also holds in positive characteristic. The experiments are done by using our Macaulay2 package, which constructs random canonically embedded curves of genus $g\leq 15$ over arbitrary small finite fields.
