Abstract:This volume contains the proceedings of MARS 2020, the fourth workshop on Models for Formal Analysis of Real Systems held as part of ETAPS 2020, the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. The MARS workshop brings together researchers from different communities who are developing formal models of real systems in areas where complex models occur, such as networks, cyber-physical systems, hardware/software codesign, biology, etc. The MARS workshops stem from two observations: (1) Large case studies are essential to show that specification formalisms and modelling techniques are applicable to real systems, whereas many research papers only consider toy examples or tiny case studies. (2) Developing an accurate model of a real system takes a large amount of time, often months or years. In most scientific papers, however, salient details of the model need to be skipped due to lack of space, and to leave room for formal verification methodologies and results. The MARS workshop remedies these issues, emphasising modelling over verification, so as to retain lessons learnt from formal modelling, which are not usually discussed elsewhere.

Abstract:This volume contains the proceedings of the Eighth Workshop on Mathematically Structured Functional Programming (MSFP 2020). The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Dublin, Ireland on the 25th of April as a satellite event of the European Joint Conferences on Theory & Practice of Software (ETAPS 2020). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ETAPS 2020, and consequently MSFP 2020, has been postponed to a date yet to be determined. The MSFP workshop highlights applications of mathematical structures to programming applications. We promote the use of category theory, type theory, and formal language semantics to the development of simple and reasonable programs. This year's papers cover a variety of topics ranging from array programming to dependent types to effects.

Abstract:In Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE), a portfolio of similar systems is developed from a shared set of software assets. Claimed benefits of SPLE include reductions in the portfolio size, cost of software development and time to production, as well as improvements in the quality of the delivered systems. Yet, despite these benefits, SPLE is still in the early adoption stage. We believe that automated approaches, tools and techniques that provide better support for SPLE activities can further facilitate its adoption in practice and increase its benefits. To promote work in this area, the FMSPLE'16 workshop focuses on automated analysis and formal methods, which can (1) lead to a further increase in development productivity and reduction in maintenance costs associated with management of the SPLE artifacts, and (2) provide proven guarantees for the correctness and quality of the delivered systems.

Abstract:The sixth workshop on Mathematically Structured Functional Programming is devoted to the derivation of functionality from structure. It is a celebration of the direct impact of Theoretical Computer Science on programs as we write them today. Modern programming languages, and in particular functional languages, support the direct expression of mathematical structures, equipping programmers with tools of remarkable power and abstraction. Where would Haskell be without monads? Functional reactive programming without arrows? Call-by-push-value without adjunctions? The list goes on. This workshop is a forum for researchers who seek to reflect mathematical phenomena in data and control. The sixth workshop on Mathematically Structured Functional Programming was held on 8th April 2016 as a part of ETAPS 2016 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. There were five contributed talks and one invited talk.

Abstract:Over the past years there has been quite a lot of activity in the algebraic community about using algebraic methods for providing support to model-driven software engineering. The aim of this workshop is to gather researchers working on the development and application of algebraic methods to provide rigorous support to model-based software engineering. The topics relevant to the workshop are all those related to the use of algebraic methods in software engineering, including but not limited to: formally specifying and verifying model-based software engineering concepts and related ones (MDE, UML, OCL, MOF, DSLs, ...); tool support for the above; integration of formal and informal methods; and theoretical frameworks (algebraic, rewriting-based, category theory-based, ...). The workshop's main goal is to examine, discuss, and relate the existing projects within the algebraic community that address common open-issues in model-driven software engineering.

Their design, implementation and their use in reasoning tasks, ranging from the correctness of software to the properties of formal systems, have been the focus of considerable research over the last two decades. Abstract:Type theories, logical frameworks and meta-languages form a common foundation for designing, implementing, and reasoning about formal languages and their semantics. They are central to the design of modern programming languages, certified software, and domain specific logics. More generally, they continue to influence applications in many areas in mathematics, logic and computer science. The Logical Frameworks and Meta-languages: Theory and Practice workshop aims to bring together designers, implementers, and practitioners working on these areas, and in particular about: the automation and implementation of the meta-theory of programming languages and related calculi; the design of proof assistants, automated theorem provers, and formal digital libraries building upon logical framework technology; theoretical and practical issues concerning the encoding of variable binding and fresh name generation, especially the representation of, and reasoning about, datatypes defined from binding signatures; case studies of meta-programming, and the mechanization of the (meta) theory of descriptions of programming languages and other calculi. This volume contains the final and revised versions of the papers presented at LFMTP 2010, which was held on July 14, 2010 in Edinburgh (UK). LFMTP 2010 was part of the Federated Logic Conference (FLoC 2010), and affilated with LICS 2010.

Abstract:These are the proceedings of the 14th International Workshop on Formal Engineering approaches to Software Components and Architectures (FESCA). The workshop was held on April 22, 2017 in Uppsala (Sweden) as a satellite event to the European Joint Conference on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS'17). The aim of the FESCA workshop is to bring together junior researchers from formal methods, software engineering, and industry interested in the development and application of formal modelling approaches as well as associated analysis and reasoning techniques with practical benefits for software engineering. In recent years, the growing importance of functional correctness and the increased relevance of system quality properties (e.g. performance, reliability, security) have stimulated the emergence of analytical and modelling techniques for the design and development of software systems. With the increasing complexity and utilization of today's software systems, FESCA aims at addressing two research questions: (1) what role is played by the software design phase in the systematic addressing of the analytical and modelling challenges, and (2) how can formal and semi-formal techniques be effectively applied to make the issues easier to address automatically, with lower human intervention.

Abstract:The ability to negotiate contracts for a wide range of aspects and to provide services conforming to them is a most pressing need in service-oriented architectures. High-level models of contracts are making their way into the area, but application developers are still left to their own devices when it comes to writing code that will comply with a contract concluded before service provision. At the programming language level, contracts appear as separate concerns that crosscut through application logic. Therefore there is a need for contract analysis tools that extract abstracted models from applications so they become amenable to formal reasoning using formal language techniques. Since its inception, the aim of of FLACOS has been that of bringing together researchers and practitioners working on language- or application-based solutions to these problems through the formalization of contracts, the design of appropriate abstraction mechanisms, and tools and techniques for analysis of contracts, and analysis, testing and monitoring of conformance to contracts by applications.

Abstract:Graphs are used as models in many areas of computer science and computer engineering. For example graphs are used to represent syntax, control and data flow, dependency, state spaces, models such as UML and other types of domain-specific models, and social network graphs. In all of these examples, the graph serves as an intuitive yet mathematically precise foundation for many purposes, both in theory building as well as in practical applications. Graph-based models serve as an abstract communication medium and are used to describe various concepts and phenomena. Moreover, once such graph-based models are constructed, they can be analyzed and transformed to verify the correctness of static and dynamic properties, to discover new properties, to deeply study a particular domain of interest or to produce new equivalent and/or optimized versions of graph-based models. The Graphs as Models (GaM) workshop series combines the strengths of two pre-existing workshop series: GT-VMT (Graph Transformation and Visual Modelling Techniques) and GRAPHITE (Graph Inspection and Traversal Engineering), but also solicits research from other related areas, such as social network analysis. GaM offers a platform for exchanging new ideas and results for active researchers in these areas, with a particular aim of boosting inter- and transdisciplinary research exploiting new applications of graphs as models in any area of computational science. This year (2017), the third edition of the GaM workshop was co-located with the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software 2017 (ETAPS'17), held in Uppsala, Sweden.

Abstract:This EPTCS volume contains the joint proceedings for the fourth international workshop on Formal Methods for Autonomous Systems (FMAS 2022) and the fourth international workshop on Automated and verifiable Software sYstem DEvelopment (ASYDE 2022), which were held on the 26th and 27th of September 2022. FMAS 2022 and ASYDE 2022 were held in conjunction with 20th International Conference on Software Engineering and Formal Methods (SEFM'22), at Humboldt University in Berlin. For FMAS, this year's workshop was our return to having in-person attendance after two editions of FMAS that were entirely online because of the restrictions necessitated by COVID-19. We were also keen to ensure that FMAS 2022 remained easily accessible to people who were unable to travel, so the workshop facilitated remote presentation and attendance. The goal of FMAS is to bring together leading researchers who are using formal methods to tackle the unique challenges presented by autonomous systems, to share their recent and ongoing work. Autonomous systems are highly complex and present unique challenges for the application of formal methods. Autonomous systems act without human intervention, and are often embedded in a robotic system, so that they can interact with the real world. As such, they exhibit the properties of safety-critical, cyber-physical, hybrid, and real-time systems. We are interested in work that uses formal methods to specify, model, or verify autonomous and/or robotic systems; in whole or in part. We are also interested in successful industrial applications and potential directions for this emerging application of formal methods.
