Abstract:We use spectral theory to produce embeddings of distributions in the algebras of generalized functions on a closed Riemannian manifold. These embeddings are invariant under isometries and preserve the singularity structure of the distributions.

Abstract:We prove asymptotic normality of the distributions defined by q-supernomials, which implies asymptotic normality of the distributions given by the central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion modules of the current algebra of sl2. The limit is taken over linearly scaled fusion powers of a fixed collection of irreducible representations. This includes as special instances all Demazure modules of the affine Kac-Moody algebra associated to sl2. Along with an available complementary result on the asymptotic normality of the basic specialization of graded tensors of the type A standard representation, our result is a central limit theorem for a serious class of graded tensors. It therefore serves as an indication towards universal behavior: The central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion and, in particular, Demazure modules behave asymptotically normal, as the number of fusions scale linearly in an asymptotic parameter, N say.

Abstract:In this paper we define Schwartz families in tempered distribution spaces and prove many their properties. Schwartz families are the analogous of infinite dimensional matrices of separable Hilbert spaces, but for the Schwartz test function spaces, having elements (functions) realizable as vectors indexed by real Euclidean spaces (ordered families of scalars indexed by real Euclidean spaces). In the paper, indeed, one of the consequences of the principal result (the characterization of summability for Schwartz families) is that the space of linear continuous operators among Schwartz test function spaces is linearly isomorphic with the space of Schwartz families. It should be noticed that this theorem is possible because of the very good properties of Schwartz test function spaces and because of the particular structures of the Schwartz families viewed as generalized matrices; in fact, any family of tempered distribution, regarded as generalized matrix, has one index belonging to a Euclidean space and one belonging to a test function space, so that any Schwartz family is a matrix in the sense of distributions. Another motivation for the introduction and study of these families is that these are the families which are summable with respect to every tempered system of coefficients, in the sense of superpositions. The Schwartz families we present in this paper are one possible rigorous and simply manageable mathematical model for the infinite matrices used frequently in Quantum Mechanics.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce and study the multiplication among smooth functions and Schwartz families. This multiplication is fundamental in the formulation and development of a spectral theory for Schwartz linear operators in distribution spaces, to introduce efficiently the Schwartz eigenfamilies of such operators and to build up a good functional calculus for them. The definition of eigenfamily is absolutely natural and this new operation allows us to develop a rigorous and manageable spectral theory for Quantum Mechanics, since it appears in a form extremely similar to the current use in Physics.

Abstract:The algebra of densities $\Den(M)$ is a commutative algebra canonically associated with a given manifold or supermanifold $M$. We introduced this algebra earlier in connection with our studies of Batalin--Vilkovisky geometry. The algebra $\Den(M)$ is graded by real numbers and possesses a natural invariant scalar product. This leads to important geometric consequences and applications to geometric constructions on the original manifold. In particular, there is a classification theorem for derivations of the algebra $\Den(M)$. It allows a natural definition of bracket operations on vector densities of various weights on a (super)manifold $M$, similar to how the classical Frölicher--Nijenhuis theorem on derivations of the algebra of differential forms leads to the Nijenhuis bracket. It is possible to extend this classification from "vector fields" (derivations) on $\Den(M)$ to "multivector fields". This leads to the striking result that an arbitrary even Poisson structure on $M$ possesses a canonical lifting to the algebra of densities. This is in sharp contrast with the previously studied case of an odd Poisson structure, where extra data are required for such a lifting.

Schwartz very weak solutions for Schrödinger type equations with distributional coefficients

Abstract:This paper continues the analysis of Schrödinger type equations with distributional coefficients initiated by the authors in [3]. Here we consider coefficients that are tempered distributions with respect to the space variable and are continuous in time. We prove that the corresponding Cauchy problem, which in general cannot even be stated in the standard distributional setting, admits a Schwartz very weak solution which is unique modulo negligible perturbations. Consistency with the classical theory is proved in the case of regular coefficients and Schwartz Cauchy data.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove several Ax-Schanuel type results for uniformizers of geometric structures; our general results describe the differential algebraic relations between the solutions of the partial differential equations satisfied by the uniformizers. In particular, we give a proof of the full Ax-Schanuel Theorem with derivatives for uniformizers of simple projective structure on curves including unifomizers of any Fuchsian group of the first kind and any genus. Combining our techniques with those of Ax, we give a strong Ax-Schanuel result for the combination of the derivatives of the j-function and the exponential function. In the general setting of Shimura varieties, we obtain an Ax-Schanuel theorem for the derivatives of uniformizing maps. Our techniques combine tools from differential geometry, differential algebra and the model theory of differentially closed fields.

Abstract:We define the universal exponential extension of an algebraically closed differential field and investigate its properties in the presence of a nice valuation and in connection with linear differential equations. Next we prove normalization theorems for algebraic differential equations over $H$-fields, as a tool in solving such equations in suitable extensions. The results in this monograph are essential in our work on Hardy fields in [6].

Abstract:Analogous to L.~Schwartz' study of the space $\mathcal{D}'(\mathcal{E})$ of semi-regular distributions we investigate the topological properties of the space $\mathcal{D}'(\dot{\mathcal{B}})$ of semi-regular vanishing distributions and give representations of its dual and of the scalar product with this dual. In order to determine the dual of the space of semi-regular vanishing distributions we generalize and modify a result of A. Grothendieck on the duals of $E \hat\otimes F$ if $E$ and $F$ are quasi-complete and $F$ is not necessarily semi-reflexive.

Universal properties of spaces of generalized functions

Abstract:By means of several examples, we motivate that universal properties are the simplest way to solve a given mathematical problem, explaining in this way why they appear everywhere in mathematics. In particular, we present the co-universal property of Schwartz distributions, as the simplest way to have derivatives of continuous functions, Colombeau algebra as the simplest quotient algebra where representatives of zero are infinitesimal, and generalized smooth functions as the universal way to associate set-theoretical maps of non-Archimedean numbers defined by nets of smooth functions (e.g. regularizations of distributions) and having arbitrary derivatives. Each one of these properties yields a characterization up to isomorphisms of the corresponding space. The paper requires only the notions of category, functor, natural transformation and Schwartz's distributions, and introduces the notion of universal solution using a simple and non-abstract language.

Abstract:We describe the multiplier algebra of the noncommutative Schwartz space. This multiplier algebra can be seen as the largest ${}^*$-algebra of unbounded operators on a separable Hilbert space with the classical Schwartz space of rapidly decreasing functions as the domain. We show in particular that it is neither a $\mathcal{Q}$-algebra nor $m$-convex. On the other hand, we prove that classical tools of functional analysis, for example, the closed graph theorem, the open mapping theorem or the uniform boundedness principle, are still available.

Abstract:Based on an infinite dimensional distributions space, we study the solution of the generalized stochastic Clairaut equation using a suitable convolution calculus. The solution of such equation is shown to be positive and its integral representation with respect to the Radon measure is given. Moreover, the contractivity property is studied. Finally, the system is shown to be finite-time stochastically stable.

We prove that all classical properties of these spaces, defined previously on affine spaces and on Nash manifolds, also hold in the case of affine real algebraic varieties, and give partial results for the non-affine case.

Abstract:Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group and let G'=[G,G] be its derived subgroup. Let (G,V) be a multiplicity free representation with a one dimensional quotient (see definition below). We prove that the algebra D(V)^{G'} of G'-invariant differential operators with polynomial coefficients on V, is a quotient of a so-called Smith algebra over its center. Over C this class of algebras was introduced by S.P. Smith as a class of algebras similar to the enveloping algebra U(sl(2)) of sl(2). Our result generalizes the case of the Weil representation, where the associative algebra generated by Q(x) and Q(?) (Q being a non degenerate quadratic form on V) is a quotient of U(sl(2)) Other structure results are obtained when (G,V) is a regular prehomogeneous vector space of commutative parabolic type.

Abstract:It is shown that the rich algebraic structure of the standard $d$-dimensional Coulomb problem can be extended to its Dunkl counterpart. Replacing standard derivatives by Dunkl ones in the so($d+1$,2) dynamical algebra generators of the former gives rise to a deformed algebra with similar commutation relations, except that the metric tensor becomes dependent on the reflection operators and that there are some additional commutation or anticommutation relations involving the latter. It is then shown that from some of the dynamical algebra generators it is straightforward to derive the integrals of motion of the Dunkl-Coulomb problem in Sturm representation. Finally, from the latter, the components of a deformed Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector are built. Together with the Dunkl angular momentum components, such operators insure the superintegrability of the Dunkl-Coulomb problem in Schrödinger representation.

Abstract:We answer various questions concerning the distribution of extensions of a given central simple algebra $K$ over a number field. Specifically, we give asymptotics for the count of inner Galois extensions $L|K$ of fixed degree and center with bounded discriminant. We also relate the distribution of outer extensions of $K$ to the distribution of field extensions of its center $Z(K)$. This paper generalizes the study of asymptotics of field extensions to the noncommutative case in an analogous manner to the program initiated by Deschamps and Legrand to extend inverse Galois theory to skew fields.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a countable discrete group. Given any sequence $(f_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of $\ell^p$-normalized functions ($p\in [1,2)$), consider the associated positive definite matrix coefficients $\langle f_n, \rho(\cdot) f_n\rangle$ of the right regular representation $\rho$. We construct an orthogonal decomposition of the corresponding {\it Schur multipliers} on the reduced group $C^*$-algebra or the uniform Roe algebra of $\Gamma$. We identify this decomposition explicitly via the limit points of the orbits $(\widetilde f_n)_{n\geq 1}$ in the group-invariant compactification of the quotient space constructed by Varadhan and the first author in [14]. We apply this result and use positive-definiteness to provide two (quite different) characterizations of amenability of $\Gamma$ -- one via a variational approach and the other using group-invariant percolation on Cayley graphs constructed by Benjamini, Lyons, Peres and Schramm [1]. These results underline, from a new point of view to the best of our knowledge, the manner in which Schur multipliers capture geometric properties of the underlying group $\Gamma$.

Joint distribution in residue classes of families of polynomially-defined additive functions

Abstract:Let $g_1, \dots , g_M$ be additive functions for which there exist nonconstant polynomials $G_1, \dots , G_M$ satisfying $g_i(p) = G_i(p)$ for all primes $p$ and all $i \in \{1, \dots , M\}$. Under fairly general and nearly optimal hypotheses, we show that the functions $g_1, \dots , g_M$ are jointly equidistributed among the residue classes to moduli $q$ varying uniformly up to a fixed but arbitrary power of $\log x$. Thus, we obtain analogues of the Siegel-Walfisz Theorem for primes in arithmetic progressions, but with primes replaced by values of such additive functions. Our results partially extend work of Delange from fixed moduli to varying moduli, and also generalize recent work done for a single additive function.
