Abstract:We introduce a Π 1 1 \Pi ^1_1 -uniformization principle and establish its equivalence with the set-theoretic hypothesis ( ω 1 ) L = ω 1 (\omega _1)^L=\omega _1 . This principle is then applied to derive the equivalence, to suitable set-theoretic hypotheses, of the existence of Π 1 1 \Pi ^1_1 -maximal chains and thin maximal antichains in the Turing degrees. We also use the Π 1 1 \Pi ^1_1 -uniformization principle to study Martin’s conjectures on cones of Turing degrees, and show that under V = L V=L the conjectures fail for uniformly degree invariant Π 1 1 \Pi ^1_1 functions.

Abstract:Bounded stationary reflection at a cardinal $\lambda$ is the assertion that every stationary subset of $\lambda$ reflects but there is a stationary subset of $\lambda$ that does not reflect at arbitrarily high cofinalities. We produce a variety of models in which bounded stationary reflection holds. These include models in which bounded stationary reflection holds at the successor of every singular cardinal $\mu > \aleph_\omega$ and models in which bounded stationary reflection holds at $\mu^+$ but the approachability property fails at $\mu$.

Abstract:A complete theory $T$ has the Schröder-Bernstein property or simply the SB-property if any pair of elementarily bi-embeddable models are isomorphic. This property has been studied in the discrete first-order setting and can be seen as a first step towards classification theory. This paper deals with the SB-property on continuous theories. Examples of complete continuous theories that have this property include Hilbert spaces and any completion of the theory of probability algebras. We also study a weaker notion, the SB-property up to perturbations. This property holds if any two elementarily bi-embeddable models are isomorphic up to perturbations. We prove that the theory of Hilbert spaces expanded with a bounded self-adjoint operator has the SB-property up to perturbations of the operator and that the theory of atomless probability algebras with a generic automorphism have the SB-property up to perturbations of the automorphism. We also study how the SB-property behaves with respect to randomizations. Finally we prove, in the continuous setting, that if $T$ is a strictly stable theory then $T$ does not have the SB-property.

Abstract:The main theorem of this paper establishes a uniform syndeticity result concerning the multiple recurrence of measure-preserving actions on probability spaces. More precisely, for any integers and any , we prove the existence of and (dependent only on d, l, and ) such that the following holds: Consider a solvable group of derived length l, a probability space , and d pairwise commuting measure-preserving -actions on . Let E be a measurable set in X with . Then, K many (left) translates of cover . This result extends and refines uniformity results by Furstenberg and Katznelson. As a combinatorial application, we obtain the following uniformity result. For any integers and any , there are and (dependent only on d, l, and ) such that for all finite solvable groups G of derived length l and any subset with (where m is the uniform measure on G), we have that K-many (left) translates of cover G. The proof of our main result is a consequence of an ultralimit version of Austin's amenable ergodic Szeméredi theorem.

Abstract:We investigate uniformity properties of strategies. These properties involve sets of plays in order to express useful constraints on strategies that are not \mu-calculus definable. Typically, we can state that a strategy is observation-based. We propose a formal language to specify uniformity properties, interpreted over two-player turn-based arenas equipped with a binary relation between plays. This way, we capture e.g. games with winning conditions expressible in epistemic temporal logic, whose underlying equivalence relation between plays reflects the observational capabilities of agents (for example, synchronous perfect recall). Our framework naturally generalizes many other situations from the literature. We establish that the problem of synthesizing strategies under uniformity constraints based on regular binary relations between plays is non-elementary complete.

Abstract:We deal with the fragment of modal logic consisting of implications of formulas built up from the variables and the constant `true' by conjunction and diamonds only. The weaker language allows one to interpret the diamonds as the uniform reflection schemata in arithmetic, possibly of unrestricted logical complexity. We formulate an arithmetically complete calculus with modalities labeled by natural numbers and \omega, where \omega corresponds to the full uniform reflection schema, whereas n<\omega corresponds to its restriction to arithmetical \Pi_{n+1}-formulas. This calculus is shown to be complete w.r.t. a suitable class of finite Kripke models and to be decidable in polynomial time.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of universal preparability for a state of a system, more precisely: for a normal state on a von Neumann algebra. It describes a situation where from an arbitrary initial state it is possible to prepare a target state with arbitrary precision by a repeated interaction with a sequence of copies of another system. For B(H)$${\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})}$$ we give criteria sufficient to ensure that all normal states are universally preparable which can be verified for a class of non-commutative birth and death processes realized, in particular, by the interaction of a micromaser with a stream of atoms. As a tool, the theory of tight sequences of states and of stationary states is further developed and we show that in the presence of stationary faithful normal states universal preparability of all normal states is equivalent to asymptotic completeness, a notion studied earlier in connection with the scattering theory of non-commutative Markov processes.

Abstract:Since being isolated by Viale and Weiss in 2009, the Guessing Model Property has emerged as a particularly prominent and powerful consequence of the Proper Forcing Axiom. In this paper, we investigate connections between variations of the Guessing Model Property and cardinal arithmetic, broadly construed. We improve upon results of Viale and Krueger by proving that a weakening of the Guessing Model Property implies Shelah's Strong Hypothesis. We also prove that, though the Guessing Model Property is known not to put an upper bound on the size of the continuum, it does imply that $2^{\omega_1}$ is as small as possible relative to the value of $2^\omega$. Building on work of Laver, we prove that, in the extension of any model of $\mathsf{PFA}$ by a measure algebra, every tree of height and size $\omega_1$ is B-special (a generalization of specialness introduced by Baumgartner that can also hold of trees with uncountable branches). Finally, we investigate the impact of forcing axioms for Suslin and almost Suslin trees on guessing model properties. In particular, we prove thatif $S$ is a Suslin tree, then the axioms $\mathsf{PFA}(S)$ and $\mathsf{PFA}(S)[S]$ imply the Guessing Model Property and the Indestructible Guessing Model Property, respectively, and, if $T^*$ is an almost Suslin Aronszajn tree, then the axiom $\mathsf{PFA}(T^*)$ implies the Indestructible Guessing Model Property. This answers a number of questions of Cox and Krueger.

Abstract:Hofmann and Streicher famously showed how to lift Grothendieck universes into presheaf topoi, and Streicher has extended their result to the case of sheaf topoi by sheafification. In parallel, van den Berg and Moerdijk have shown in the context of algebraic set theory that similar constructions continue to apply even in weaker metatheories. Unfortunately, sheafification seems not to preserve an important realignment property enjoyed by the presheaf universes that plays a critical role in models of univalent type theory as well as synthetic Tait computability, a recent technique to establish syntactic properties of type theories and programming languages. In the context of multiple universes, the realignment property also implies a coherent choice of codes for connectives at each universe level, thereby interpreting the cumulativity laws present in popular formulations of Martin-Löf type theory.

Abstract:In the lecture notes it is shown that an ordinal $\psi_{\Omega}(\varepsilon_{\mathbb{S}^{+}+1})$ is an upper bound for the proof-theoretic ordinal of a set theory ${\sf KP}\omega+(M\prec_{\Sigma_{1}}V)$. In this note we show that ${\sf KP}\omega+(M\prec_{\Sigma_{1}}V)$ proves the well-foundedness up to $\psi_{\Omega}(\omega_{n}(\mathbb{S}^{+}+1))$ for each $n$.
