Abstract:A critical discussion on the $H_0$ Hubble constant tension is presented by considering both early and late-type observations. From recent precise measurements, discrepancies emerge when comparing results for some cosmological quantities obtained at different redshifts. We highlight the most relevant measurements of $H_0$ and propose potential ideas to solve its tension. These solutions concern the exploration of new physics beyond the $\Lambda$CDM model or the evaluation of $H_0$ by other methods. In particular, we focus on the role of the look-back time.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper focuses on a key problem in cosmology, which is the inconsistency of the Hubble constant (H0), also known as the Hubble tension. The Hubble constant is a measure of the rate of cosmic expansion, but values obtained from different methods and different ranges of redshift show significant differences. The authors of the paper analyze observational data from early types (such as cosmic microwave background radiation) and late types (such as Type Ia supernovae), which result in a discrepancy of about 5σ when determining the Hubble constant. The paper discusses possible strategies to address this issue, including exploring new physics beyond the ΛCDM (cold dark matter) model and reevaluating H0 through different approaches. In particular, the method of using the look-back time to evaluate the Hubble constant is mentioned, which relies on the observed source's look-back time to determine the Hubble parameter at any redshift. Furthermore, the paper discusses the redshift-dependent Hubble constant and investigates its impact on cosmological distance measurements. The authors point out that although the ΛCDM model is highly successful in describing most aspects of cosmic history, it faces challenges such as the nature of dark energy and dark matter, as well as the H0 tension. The paper concludes by summarizing the findings and presenting conclusions. In summary, this paper aims to promote the understanding and possible modifications of the cosmological standard model through a critical discussion of the Hubble tension, in order to address the mismatch between observational data.
