Abstract:Let $G$ be a dp-minimal group; we prove some consequences of several different hypotheses on $G$. First, if $G$ is torsion-free, then it is abelian. Second, if $G$ admits a distal f-generic type, then it is virtually nilpotent; we prove this by equipping the quotient of $G$ by its FC-center in this case with a valued group structure. Finally, if $G$ has the uniform chain condition, for example if $G$ is stable, then $G$ is virtually solvable.

Abstract:We classify dp-minimal pure fields up to elementary equivalence. Most are equivalent to Hahn series fields $K((t^\Gamma))$ where $\Gamma$ satisfies some divisibility conditions and $K$ is $\mathbb{F}_p^{alg}$ or a local field of characteristic zero. We show that dp-small fields (including VC-minimal fields) are algebraically closed or real closed.

Abstract:By [6], a minimal group $G$ is called $z$-minimal if $G/Z(G)$ is minimal. In this paper, we present the $z$-Minimality Criterion for dense subgroups with some applications to topological matrix groups. For a locally compact group $G$, let $\operatorname{Inn}(G)$ be the group of all inner automorphisms of $G,$ endowed with the Birkhoff topology. Using a theorem by Goto [14], we obtain our main result which asserts that if $G$ is a connected Lie group and $H\in\{G/Z(G), \operatorname{Inn}(G)\},$ then $H$ is minimal if and only if it is centre-free and topologically isomorphic to $\operatorname{Inn}(G/Z(G)).$ In particular, if $G$ is a connected Lie group with discrete centre, then $\operatorname{Inn}(G)$ is minimal. We prove that a connected locally compact nilpotent group is $z$-minimal if and only if it is compact abelian. In contrast, we show that there exists a connected metabelian $z$-minimal Lie group that is neither compact nor abelian.

Abstract:. Minimal groups are the Hausdorﬀ topological groups G satisfying the open mapping theorem with respect to continuous isomorphisms, i.e., every continuous isomorphism G (cid:47) (cid:47) H , with a Hausdorﬀ topological group H , is a topological isomorphism. A topological group ( G, τ ) is called locally minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of the identity such that for every Hausdorﬀ group topology σ ≤ τ with V ∈ σ one has σ = τ . Minimal groups, as well as locally compact groups, are locally minimal. According to a well known theorem of Prodanov every subgroup of an inﬁnite compact abelian group K is minimal if and only if K is isomorphic to the group Z p of p -adic integers for some prime p . We ﬁnd a remarkable connection of local minimality to Lie groups and p -adic numbers by means of the following results extending Prodanov’s theorem: every subgroup of a locally compact abelian group K is locally minimal if and only if K is either a Lie group or K has an open subgroup isomorphic to Z p for some prime p . In the nonabelian case we prove that all subgroups of a connected locally compact group are locally minimal if and only if K is a Lie group, resolving in the positive Problem 7.49 from [ ? ].

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abeilian group. A sequence $S$ with terms from $G$ is zero-sum if the sum of terms in $S$ equals zero. It is a minimal zero-sum sequence if no proper, nontrivial subsequence is zero-sum. The maximal length of a minimal zero-sum subsequence in $G$ is the Davenport constant, denoted $D(G)$. For a rank 2 group $G=C_n \oplus C_n$, it is known that $D(G)=2n-1$. However, the structure of all maximal length minimal zero-sum sequences remains open. If every such sequence contains a term with multiplicity $n-1$, then $C_n \oplus C_n$ is said to have Property B, and it is conjectured that this is true for all rank 2 groups $C_n \oplus C_n$. In this paper, we show that Property B is multiplicative, namely, if $G=C_n \oplus C_n$ and $G=C_m \oplus C_m$ both satisfy Property B, with $m, n\geq 3$ odd and $mn>9$, then $C_{mn}\oplus C_{mn}$ satisfies Property B also. Combined with previous work in the literature, this reduces the question of establishing Property B to the prime cases, and in such case the complete structural description of the sequence follows.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a subgroup of a group $G$. $H$ is said satisfying $\Pi$-property in $G$, if $|G/K:N_{G/K}(HK/K\cap L/K)|$ is a $\pi(HK/K\cap L/K))$-number for any chief factor $L/K$ of $G$, and, if there is a subnormal supplement $T$ of $H$ in $G$ such that $H\cap T\le I\le H$ for some subgroup $I$ satisfying $\Pi$-property in $G$, then $H$ is said $\Pi$-normal in $G$. By these properties of some subgroups, we obtain some new criterions of $p$-nilpotency of finite groups.

Abstract:A topological group G is called locally minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of 1 in G such that if H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous isomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H, then f is open. This paper is focused on the study of quotients of locally minimal groups.A topological group G is called locally q-minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of the identity of G such that whenever H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous surjective homomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H, then f is open. We find a close connection between locally q-minimality and divisibility, by showing that a dense subgroup of Rn is locally q-minimal if and only if it is divisible. A description of the locally q-minimal subgroups of the n-dimensional torus Tn is also given.Two weaker versions of local q-minimality are proposed – a topological group G is:(a)locally t-minimal, if all Hausdorff quotients of G are locally minimal;(b)locally q⁎-minimal, if there exists a neighbourhood V of 1 in G such that whenever H is a Hausdorff group and f:G→H is a continuous surjective homomorphism such that f(V) is a neighbourhood of 1 in H and ker⁡f⊆V, then f is open.While local q-minimality and local t-minimality are preserved by taking quotients, local q⁎-minimality fails to have this property (so does not coincide with local t-minimality), yet it has a relevant advantage. By means of an appropriate notion of local t-density, one can show that a dense subgroup H of a Hausdorff group G is locally q⁎-minimal if and only if G is locally q⁎-minimal and H is locally t-dense in G. Similar criterion for local q-minimality is not available (examples are given to show that a topological group with a dense locally q-minimal subgroup need not be locally q-minimal). The interrelations of these three versions of local minimality, as well as their prominence properties are studied in detail.
p-Nilpotent maximal subgroups in finite groups

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and suppose that every maximal subgroup of a finite group is either $p$-nilpotent or has prime index. Such group need not be $p$-solvable, and we study its structure by proving that only one nonabelian simple group of order divisible by $p$, which belongs to the family ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$, can be involved in it. For $p=2$, we specify more, and in fact, such simple group must be isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_2({r^a})$ for certain values of the prime $r$ and the parameter $a$.

Abstract:It is known that a minimal prime system is either a subshift or with a connected phase space (Keynes and Newton Trans Am Math Soc 217:237–255, 1976 ). We show that a double minimal system is a subshift; this implies immediately that no non-periodic map has 4-fold topological minimal self-joinings. We also prove that a POD system is either uniformly rigid or is a subshift.

Abstract:This is a contribution to the classification problem for dp-minimal expansions of $(\mathbb{Z},+)$. Let $S$ be a dense cyclic group order on $(\mathbb{Z},+)$. We use results on "dense pairs" to construct uncountably many dp-minimal expansions of $(\mathbb{Z},+,S)$. These constructions are applications of the Mordell-Lang conjecture and are the first examples of "non-modular" dp-minimal expansions of $(\mathbb{Z},+)$. We canonically associate an o-minimal expansion $\mathcal{R}$ of $(\mathbb{R},+,\times)$, an $\mathcal{R}$-definable circle group $\mathbb{H}$, and a character $\mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{H}$ to a "non-modular" dp-minimal expansion of $(\mathbb{Z},+,S)$. We also construct a "non-modular" dp-minimal expansion of $(\mathbb{Z},+,\mathrm{Val}_p)$ from the character $\mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Z}^\times_p$, $k \mapsto \mathrm{exp}(pk)$.

Abstract:We first prove that if $\mathcal{Z}$ is a dp-minimal expansion of $\left(\mathbb{Z},+,0,1\right)$ which is not interdefinable with $\left(\mathbb{Z},+,0,1,<\right)$, then every infinite subset of $\mathbb{Z}$ definable in $\mathcal{Z}$ is generic in $\mathbb{Z}$. Using this, we prove that if $\mathcal{Z}$ is a dp-minimal expansion of $\left(\mathbb{Z},+,0,1\right)$ with monster model $G$ such that $G^{00}\neq G^{0}$, then for some $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}\backslash\mathbb{Q}$, the cyclic order on $\mathbb{Z}$ induced by the embedding $n\mapsto n\alpha+\mathbb{Z}$ of $\mathbb{Z}$ in $\mathbb{R}\big/\mathbb{Z}$ is definable in $\mathcal{Z}$. The proof employs the Gleason-Yamabe theorem for abelian groups.

Abstract:Let 𝔛 be a class of finite groups closed under taking subgroups, homomorphic images, and extensions. Following H. Wielandt, we call a subgroup H of a finite group G a submaximal 𝔛- subgroup if there exists an isomorphic embedding ϕ : G ↪ G * of G into some finite group G * under which G ϕ is subnormal in G * and H ϕ = K ∩ G ϕ for some maximal 𝔛- subgroup K of G * . In the case where 𝔛 coincides with the class of all π-groups for some set π of prime numbers, submaximal 𝔛- subgroups are called submaximal π-subgroups . In his talk at the well-known conference on finite groups in Santa Cruz in 1979, Wielandt emphasized the importance of studying submaximal π-subgroups , listed (without proof) certain of their properties, and formulated a number of open questions regarding these subgroups. Here we prove properties of maximal and submaximal 𝔛- and π - subgroups and discuss some open questions both Wielandt’s and new ones. One of such questions due to Wielandt reads as follows: Is it always the case that all submaximal 𝔛- subgroups are conjugate in a finite group G in which all maximal 𝔛- subgroups are conjugate?

Abstract:Let $\pi $ be a set of primes. According to H. Wielandt, a subgroup H of a finite group X is called a $\pi $-submaximal subgroup if there is a monomorphism $\phi :X\rightarrow Y$ into a finite group Y such that $X^\phi $ is subnormal in Y and $H^\phi =K\cap X^\phi $ for a $\pi $-maximal subgroup K of Y. In his talk at the celebrated conference on finite groups in Santa-Cruz (USA) in 1979, Wielandt posed a series of open questions and among them the following problem: to describe the $\pi $-submaximal subgroup of the minimal nonsolvable groups and to study properties of such subgroups: the pronormality, the intravariancy, the conjugacy in the automorphism group etc. In the article, for every set $\pi $ of primes, we obtain a description of the $\pi $-submaximal subgroup in minimal nonsolvable groups and investigate their properties, so we give a solution of Wielandt’s problem.

Abstract:Classes SSGP(n)(n < \omega) of topological groups are defined, and the class-theoretic inclusions SSGP(n) \subseteq SSGP(n+1) \subseteq m.a.p. are established and shown proper. These classes are investigated with respect to the properties normally studied by topologists (products, quotients, passage to dense subgroups, and the like). In passing the authors establish the presence of the SSGP(1) or SSGP(2) property in many of the early examples in the literature of abelian m.a.p. groups.
