Abstract:We study smooth complex projective varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying (chi)(X, O-X) = 0. We prove that the Albanese variety of X has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. By results of 'lien, another source of examples is provided by varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying h(0) (X, omega(X)) = 1. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hawn, and again, we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. We also formulate a conjecture on the general structure of these varieties in all dimensions.

Abstract:A generic polynomial f(x,y,z) with a prescribed Newton polytope defines a symmetric spatial curve f(x,y,z)=f(y,x,z)=0. We study its geometry: the number, degree and genus of its irreducible components, the number and type of singularities, etc. and discuss to what extent these results generalize to higher dimension and more complicated symmetries. As an application, we characterize generic one-parameter families of complex univariate polynomials, whose Galois group is a complete symmetric group.

Abstract:Euler-symmetric projective varieties, introduced by Baohua Fu and Jun-Muk Hwang in 2020, are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many $\mathbb{C}^{\times}$-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. In this paper, we study complete intersections in projective spaces which are Euler-symmetric. It is proven that such varieties are complete intersections of hyperquadrics and the base locus of the second fundamental form at a general point is again a complete intersection.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.
Compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics of symmetric powers of cellular varieties

Abstract:The compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic, introduced by Hoyois and later refined by Levine and others, is an anologue in motivic homotopy theory of the classical Euler characteristic of complex topological manifolds. It is an invariant on the Grothendieck ring of varieties $\mathrm{K}_0(\mathrm{Var}_k)$ taking values in the Grothendieck-Witt ring $\mathrm{GW}(k)$ of the base field $k$. The former ring has a natural power structure induced by symmetric powers of varieties. In a recent preprint, Pajwani and Pál construct a power structure on $\mathrm{GW}(k)$ and show that the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic respects these two power structures for $0$-dimensional varieties, or equivalently étale $k$-algebras. In this paper, we define the class $\mathrm{Sym}_k$ of symmetrisable varieties to be those varieties for which the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic respects the power structures and study the algebraic properties of $\mathrm{K}_0(\mathrm{Sym}_k)$. We show that it includes all cellular varieties, and even linear varieties as introduced by Totaro. Moreover, we show that it includes non-linear varieties such as elliptic curves. As an application of our main result, we compute the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics of symmetric powers of Grassmannians and certain del Pezzo surfaces.

Arithmetic geometry of character varieties with regular monodromy, I

Abstract:We study character varieties arising as moduli of representations of an orientable surface group into a reductive group $G$. We first show that if $G/Z$ acts freely on the representation variety, then both the representation variety and the character variety are smooth and equidimensional. Next, we count points on a family of smooth character varieties; namely, those involving both regular semisimple and regular unipotent monodromy. In particular, we show that these varieties are polynomial count and obtain an explicit expression for their $E$-polynomials. Finally, by analysing the $E$-polynomial, we determine certain topological invariants of these varieties such as the Euler characteristic and the number of connected components. As an application, we give an example of a cohomologically rigid representation which is not physically rigid.

Abstract:We construct a smooth projective algebraic variety $X_{\Psi}$ that compactifies an equivariant vector subbundle of the cotangent bundle of the flag variety of $\mathop{GL} ( n )$ (corresponding to a root ideal $\Psi$). The variety $X_\Psi$ carries natural class of line bundles whose spaces of global sections realize the Catalan functions defined in Chen-Haiman [thesis, UCBerkeley] and studied in Blasiak-Morse-Pun-Summers [J. Amer. Math. Soc. (2019), Invent. Math. (2024)]. We prove the vanishing conjectures of Chen-Haiman and (the tame cases of these of) Blasiak-Morse-Pun, as well as the monotonicity conjectures of Shimozono-Weyman [Electronic J. Combin. (2000)] using the geometry of $X_\Psi$.

Abstract:We prove a short, root-system uniform, combinatorial classification of Levi-spherical Schubert varieties for any generalized flag variety $G/B$ of finite Lie type. We apply this to the study of multiplicity-free decompositions of a Demazure module into irreducible representations of a Levi subgroup.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the moduli space of unipotent Weil-Deligne representations and characterise which irreducible components are smooth. We also study a certain class of unions of irreducible components, and prove that they are Cohen-Macaulay at points $(\Phi, N)$ with $\Phi$ regular semisimple. We apply the smoothness results proved earlier to show that a certain space of ordinary automorphic forms is a locally generically free module over the corresponding global deformation ring.

Abstract:We compute the quadratic Euler characteristic of the symmetric powers of a smooth, projective curve over any field $k$ that is not of characteristic two, using the Motivic Gauss-Bonnet Theorem of Levine-Raksit. As an application, we show over a field of characteristic zero that the power structure on the Grothendieck-Witt ring introduced by Pajwani-Pál computes the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of symmetric powers for all curves.

The Degeneracy Loci for Smooth Moduli of Sheaves

Abstract:Let S be a smooth projective surface over $\mathbb{C}$. We prove that, under certain technical assumptions, the degeneracy locus of the universal sheaf over the moduli space of stable sheaves is either empty or an irreducible Cohen-Macaulay variety of the expected dimension. We also provide a criterion for when the degeneracy locus is non-empty. This result generalizes the work of Bayer, Chen, and Jiang for the Hilbert scheme of points on surfaces. The above result is a special case of a general phenomenon: for a perfect complex of Tor-amplitude [0,1], the geometry of the degeneracy locus is closely related to the geometry of the derived Grassmannian. We analyze their birational geometry and relate it to the incidence varieties of derived Grassmannians. As a corollary, we prove a statement previously claimed by the author in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2408.06860" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.06860">arXiv:2408.06860</a>.

Euler systems for conjugate-symplectic motives

Abstract:Let $\rho$ be a conjugate-symplectic, geometric representation of the Galois group of a CM field. Under the assumption that $\rho$ is automorphic, even-dimensional, and of minimal regular Hodge--Tate type, we construct an Euler system for $\rho$ in the sense of forthcoming work of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner. The construction is based on Theta cycles as introduced in a previous paper, following works of Kudla and Liu on arithmetic theta series on unitary Shimura varieties; it relies on a certain modularity hypothesis for those theta series. Under some ordinariness assumptions, one can attach to $\rho$ a p-adic L-function. By recent results of Liu and the author, and the theory of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner, we deduce the following (unconditional) result under mild assumptions: if the p-adic L-function of $\rho$ vanishes to order 1 at the centre, then the Selmer group of $\rho$ has rank 1, generated by the class of an algebraic cycle. This confirms a case of the p-adic Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjecture.

Abstract:We show that the set of Fano varieties (with arbitrary singularities) whose anticanonical divisors have large Seshadri constants satisfies certain weak and birational boundedness. We also classify singular Fano varieties of dimension $n$ whose anticanonical divisors have Seshadri constants at least $n$, generalizing an earlier result of Liu and the author.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a Seshadri stratification on an embedded projective variety. Such a structure enables us to construct a Newton-Okounkov simplicial complex and a flat degeneration of the projective variety into a union of toric varieties. We show that the Seshadri stratification provides a geometric setup for a standard monomial theory. In this framework, Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths for Schubert varieties get a geometric interpretation as successive vanishing orders of regular functions.

Singularities of secant varieties from a Hodge theoretic perspective

Abstract:We study the singularities of secant varieties of smooth projective varieties using methods from birational geometry when the embedding line bundle is sufficiently positive. More precisely, we study the Du Bois complex of secant varieties and its relationship with the sheaves of differential forms. Through this analysis, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for these varieties to have $p$-Du Bois singularities (in a sense that was proposed in [SVV23]). In addition, we show that the singularities of these varieties are never higher rational, by giving a classification of the cases when they are pre-1-rational. From these results, we deduce several consequences, including a Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing result for the reflexive differential forms of the secant varieties.

E-polynomials of character varieties for real curves

Abstract:We calculate the E-polynomial for a class of the (complex) character varieties $\mathcal{M}_n^{\tau}$ associated to a genus $g$ Riemann surface $\Sigma$ equipped with an orientation reversing involution $\tau$. Our formula expresses the generating function $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} E(\mathcal{M}_n^{\tau}) T^n$ as the plethystic logarithm of a product of sums indexed by Young diagrams. The proof uses point counting over finite fields, emulating Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas.
