Abstract:This manuscript explores many convolution (restricted summation) type sequences via certain types of matrix based factorizations that can be used to express their generating functions. The last primary (non-appendix) section of the thesis explores the topic of how to best rigorously define a so-termed ``\emph{canonically best}'' matrix based factorization for a given class of convolution sum sequences. The notion of a canonical factorization for the generating function of such sequences needs to match the qualitative properties we find in the factorization theorems for Lambert series generating functions (LGFs). The expected qualitatively most expressive expansion we find in the LGF case results naturally from algebraic constructions of the underlying LGF series type. We propose a precise quantitative requirement to generalize this notion in terms of optimal cross-correlation statistics for certain sequences that define the matrix based factorizations of the generating function expansions we study. We finally pose a few conjectures on the types of matrix factorizations we expect to find when we are able to attain the maximal (respectively minimal) correlation statistic for a given sum type.

Postnikov and some structural theorems on reduced residue systems modulo prime-power ideals, is used to obtain estimates for certain character sums in algebraic number fields.

Uniqueness and explicit computation of mates in near-factorizations

Abstract:We show that a "mate'' $B$ of a set $A$ in a near-factorization $(A,B)$ of a finite group $G$ is unique. Further, we describe how to compute the mate $B$ very efficiently using an explicit formula for $B$. We use this approach to give an alternate proof of a theorem of Wu, Yang and Feng, which states that a strong circular external difference family cannot have more than two sets. We prove some new structural properties of near-factorizations in certain classes of groups. Then we examine all the noncyclic abelian groups of order less than $200$ in a search for a possible nontrivial near-factorization. All of these possibilities are ruled out, either by theoretical criteria or by exhaustive computer searches. (In contrast, near-factorizations in cyclic or dihedral groups are known to exist by previous results.) We also look briefly at nontrivial near-factorizations of index $\lambda > 1$ in noncyclic abelian groups. Various examples are found with $\lambda = 2$ by computer.

Factorization Theorems for Relatively Prime Divisor Sums, GCD Sums and Generalized Ramanujan Sums

Abstract:We generalize recent matrix-based factorization theorems for Lambert series generating functions generating the coefficients $(f \ast 1)(n)$ for some arithmetic function $f$. Our new factorization theorems provide analogs to these established expansions generating sums of the form $\sum_{d: (d,n)=1} f(d)$ (type I) and the Anderson-Apostol sums $\sum_{d|(m,n)} f(d) g(n/d)$ (type II) for any arithmetic functions $f$ and $g$. Our treatment of the type II sums includes a matrix-based factorization method relating the partition function $p(n)$ to arbitrary arithmetic functions $f$. We also conclude the last section of the article by directly expanding new formulas for an arithmetic function $g$ by the type II sums using discrete Fourier transforms for functions over inputs of greatest common divisors and by suitably defined orthogonal polynomial sequences whose weight function we can define by a discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) involving the partition function $p(n)$. There are numerous applications and special cases of our new results which we are able to cite as examples in the article. Particular cases of the applications we give in the article include new identities for Euler's totient function, the Ramanujan sums $c_q(n)$, the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, the Mertens function which is the summatory function of the Möbius function, and the cyclotomic polynomials.

On Formulas for Dedekind Sums and the Number of Lattice Points in Tetrahedra

Abstract:This paper explores a simple yet powerful relationship between the problem of counting lattice points and the computation of Dedekind sums. We begin by constructing and proving a sharp upper estimate for the number of lattice points in tetrahedra with some irrational coordinates for the vertices. Besides providing a sharper estimate, this upper bound (Theorem 1.1) becomes an equality (i.e. gives the exact number of lattice points) in a tetrahedron where the lengths of the edges divide each other. This equality condition can then be applied to the explicit computation of the classical Dedekind sums, a topic that is the central focus in the second half of our paper. In this half of the paper, we come up with a number of interesting results related to Dedekind sums, based on our upper estimate (Theorem 1.1). Among these findings, Theorem 1.9 and Theorem 1.10 deserve special attention, for they successfully generalize two of Apostol's formulas in [T.M. Apostol, Modular Functions and Dirichlet Series in Number Theory, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1997], and also directly imply the famous Reciprocity Law of Dedekind sums.

Abstract:We prove two general factorization theorems for fixed-point invariants of fibrations: one for the Lefschetz number and one for the Reidemeister trace. These theorems imply the familiar multiplicativity results for the Lefschetz and Nielsen numbers of a fibration. Moreover, the proofs of these theorems are essentially formal, taking place in the abstract context of bicategorical traces. This makes generalizations to other contexts straightforward.

Abstract:Algebraic Combinatorics originated in Algebra and Representation Theory, studying their discrete objects and integral quantities via combinatorial methods which have since developed independent and self-contained lives and brought us some beautiful formulas and combinatorial interpretations. The flagship hook-length formula counts the number of Standard Young Tableaux, which also gives the dimension of the irreducible Specht modules of the Symmetric group. The elegant Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the multiplicities of irreducible GL-modules in the tensor products of GL-modules. Such formulas and rules have inspired large areas of study and development beyond Algebra and Combinatorics, becoming applicable to Integrable Probability and Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Complexity Theory. We will see what lies beyond the reach of such nice product formulas and combinatorial interpretations and enter the realm of Computational Complexity Theory, that could formally explain the beauty we see and the difficulties we encounter in finding further formulas and ``combinatorial interpretations''. A 85-year-old such problem asks for a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficients of the Symmetric group, another one pertains to the plethysm coefficients of the General Linear group. In the opposite direction, the study of Kronecker and plethysm coefficients leads to the disproof of the wishful approach of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT) towards the resolution of the algebraic P vs NP Millennium problem, the VP vs VNP problem. In order to make GCT work and establish computational complexity lower bounds, we need to understand representation theoretic multiplicities in further detail, possibly asymptotically.

Abstract:Seventy years on, Moessner's theorem and Moessner's process -- i.e., the additive computation of integral powers -- continue to fascinate. They have given rise to a variety of elegant proofs, to an implementation in hardware, to generalizations, and now even to a popular video, "The Moessner Miracle.'' The existence of this video, and even more its title, indicate that while the "what'' of Moessner's process is understood, its "how'' and even more its "why'' are still elusive. And indeed all the proofs of Moessner's theorem involve more complicated concepts than both the theorem and the process. This article identifies that Moessner's process implements an additive function with dynamic programming. A version of this implementation without dynamic programming (1) gives rise to a simpler statement of Moessner's theorem and (2) can be abstracted and then instantiated into related additive computations. The simpler statement also suggests a simpler and more efficient implementation to compute integral powers as well as simple additive functions to compute, e.g., Factorial numbers. It also reveals the source of -- to quote John Conway and Richard Guy -- Moessner's magic.

Abstract:In this paper we show various new structural properties of free group factors using the recent resolution (due independently to Belinschi-Capitaine and Bordenave-Collins) of the Peterson-Thom conjecture. These results include the resolution to the coarseness conjecture independently due to the first-named author and Popa, a generalization of Ozawa-Popa's celebrated strong solidity result using vastly more general versions of the normalizer (and in an ultraproduct setting), a dichotomy result for intertwining of maximal amenable subalgebras of interpolated free group factors, as well as application to ultraproduct embeddings of nonamenable subalgebras of interpolated free group factors.

Abstract:In a previous paper we proposed a factorization principle for the correlation functions of Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) operators in free $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. These correlators are conjectured to described physical string amplitudes in an infinitely curved Ramond-Ramond pp-wave background. There was a puzzle that the factorization seems to break down for $S$-channel in the $2\rightarrow 2$ scattering process. Here we resolve this puzzle by including some diagrams missed in the previous paper. We also observe some interesting relations which further support the interpretation of higher genus correlators as physical string loop amplitudes.

Abstract:A surprising 'converse to the polynomial method' of Aaronson et al. (CCC'16) shows that any bounded quadratic polynomial can be computed exactly in expectation by a 1-query algorithm up to a universal multiplicative factor related to the famous Grothendieck constant. Here we show that such a result does not generalize to quartic polynomials and 2-query algorithms, even when we allow for additive approximations. We also show that the additive approximation implied by their result is tight for bounded bilinear forms, which gives a new characterization of the Grothendieck constant in terms of 1-query quantum algorithms. Along the way we provide reformulations of the completely bounded norm of a form, and its dual norm.

Abstract:In this paper we prove some generalizations of the classical Hasse-Davenport product relation for certain arithmetic factors defined on p-adic fields, among them one finds the epsilon-factors appearing in Tate's thesis. We then show that these generalizations are equivalent to some representation theoretic identities relating the determinant of ramified local coefficients matrices defined for coverings of SL(2,F) to Plancherel measures and gamma-factors.

Abstract:New algorithms for prime factorization that outperform the existing ones or take advantage of particular properties of the prime factors can have a practical impact on present implementations of cryptographic algorithms that rely on the complexity of factorization. Currently used keys are chosen on the basis of the present algorithmic knowledge and, thus, can potentially be subject to future breaches. For this reason, it is worth to investigate new approaches which have the potentiality of giving a computational advantage. The problem has also relevance in quantum computation, as an efficient quantum algorithm for prime factorization already exists. Thus, better classical asymptotic complexity can provide a better understanding of the advantages offered by quantum computers. In this paper, we reduce the factorization problem to the search of points of parametrizable varieties, in particular curves, over finite fields. The varieties are required to have an arbitrarily large number of intersection points with some hypersurface over the base field. For a subexponential or poly- nomial factoring complexity, the number of parameters have to scale sublinearly in the space dimension n and the complexity of computing a point given the parameters has to be subexponential or polynomial, respectively. We outline a procedure for building these varieties, which is illustrated with two constructions. In one case, we show that there are varieties whose points can be evaluated efficiently given a number of parameters not greater than n/2. In the other case, the bound is dropped to n/3. Incidentally, the first construction resembles a kind of retro-causal model. Retro-causality is considered one possible explanation of quantum weirdness.

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the greatest integer not belonging to the set $\big\{ \sum_{i=1}^na_ix_i\ |x_i\in \mathbb{N}\big\}$. The general Frobenius problem includes the determination of $g(A)$ and the related Sylvester number $n(A)$ and Sylvester sum $s(A)$. We present a new approach to the Frobenius problem. Basically, we transform the problem into an easier optimization problem. If the new problem can be solved explicitly, then we will be able to obtain a formula of $g(A)$. We illustrate the idea by giving concise proof of some existing formulas and finding some interesting new formulas of $g(A), n(A), s(A)$. Moreover, we find that MacMahon's partition analysis applies to give a new way of calculating $n(A), s(A)$ by using a rational function representation of a polynomial determined by $A$.
