Abstract:This work is the first in a series of papers devoted to constructing tables of structure constants for the complex simple Lie algebras and to finding an explicit form of Chevalley commutator formulas. The work consists of three parts. In the first part, expressions are found for the structure constants of the complex simple Lie algebra of type F_4 in the form of functions of structure constants corresponding to extraspecial pairs of roots. As a consequence, all Chevalley commutator formulas [x_r(u),x_s(y)] are calculated when the sum r+s is a root. Further, in the second part, tables of structure constants and Chevalley commutator formulas are given in the special case when all constants corresponding to extraspecial pairs are equal to one. Finally, in the third part, directed and weighted graphs associated with root systems are constructed. It is shown that the elements of the exponent of the adjacency matrices of directed graphs are the numbers P_{rs}, where P_{rs} is the number of representations of the root r in the form of a sum of the root s and fundamental roots such that any initial segment of the sum is a root. It is also shown that the elements of an exponent of the weight matrix of a weighted graph are the values of sums arising when calculating complex commutators in Chevalley groups.

Abstract:For a simple complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, fixing a principal $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple and highest weight vectors induces a basis of $\mathfrak{g}$ as vector space. For $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, we describe how to compute the Lie bracket in this basis using transvectants. This generalizes a well-known rule for $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ using Poisson brackets and degree 2 monomials in two variables. Our proof method uses a graphical calculus for classical invariant theory. Other Lie algebra types are discussed.

Abstract:Building on classical invariant theory, it is observed that the polarised traces generate the centraliser $Z_L(sl(N))$ of the diagonal embedding of $U(sl(N))$ in $U(sl(N))^{\otimes L}$. The paper then focuses on $sl(3)$ and the case $L=2$. A Calabi--Yau algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with three generators is introduced and explicitly shown to possess a PBW basis and a certain central element. It is seen that $Z_2(sl(3))$ is isomorphic to a quotient of the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ by a single explicit relation fixing the value of the central element. Upon concentrating on three highest weight representations occurring in the Clebsch--Gordan series of $U(sl(3))$, a specialisation of $\mathcal{A}$ arises, involving the pairs of numbers characterising the three highest weights. In this realisation in $U(sl(3))\otimes U(sl(3))$, the coefficients in the defining relations and the value of the central element have degrees that correspond to the fundamental degrees of the Weyl group of type $E_6$. With the correct association between the six parameters of the representations and some roots of $E_6$, the symmetry under the full Weyl group of type $E_6$ is made manifest. The coefficients of the relations and the value of the central element in the realisation in $U(sl(3))\otimes U(sl(3))$ are expressed in terms of the fundamental invariant polynomials associated to $E_6$. It is also shown that the relations of the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ can be realised with Heun type operators in the Racah or Hahn algebra.

On the character tables of the finite reductive groups $E_6(q)_{\text{ad}}$ and ${^2\!E}_6(q)_{\text{ad}}$

Abstract:We show how the character tables of the groups $E_6(q)_{\text{ad}}$ and ${^2\!E}_6(q)_{\text{ad}}$ can be constructed, where $q$ is a power of~$2$. (Partial results are also obtained for any $q$ not divisible by~$3$.) This is based on previous work by Hetz, Lusztig, Malle, Mizuno and Shoji, plus computations using Michel's version of {\sf CHEVIE}. We also need some general results that are specific to semisimple groups which are not of simply connected type. A further crucial ingredient is the determination of the values of the unipotent characters on unipotent elements for groups of type $D_4$ and $D_5$ (in characteristic~$2$).

Abstract:These are notes of a graduate course on semisimple Lie algebras and Chevalley groups (over arbitrary fields). Standard references for these topics are the lectures notes by Steinberg (1967) and the book by Carter (1972). The aim of this text is to give a self-contained introduction based on Lusztig's recent simplified approach, which is inspired by the general theory of ``canonical'' bases. Many constructions are of a purely combinatorial nature and, hence, can be implemented on a computer. We explicitly incorporate such algorithmic methods in our treatment. This is the first part of a planned book project.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study $W(2,2)$ Lie conformal algebra, which has a free $\mathbb{C}[\partial]$-basis $\{L, M\}$ such that $[L_\lambda L]=(\partial+2\lambda)L$, $[L_\lambda M]=(\partial+2\lambda)M$, $[M_\lambda M]=0$. In this paper, we study conformal derivations, central extensions and conformal modules for this Lie conformal algebra. Also, we compute the cohomology of this Lie conformal algebra with coefficients in its modules. In particular, we determine its cohomology with trivial coefficients both for the basic and reduced complexes.

Abstract:The octonionic root system of the exceptional Lie algebra E_8 has been constructed from the quaternionic roots of F_4 using the Cayley-Dickson doubling procedure where the roots of E_7 correspond to the imaginary octonions. It is proven that the automorphism group of the octonionic root system of E_7 is the adjoint Chevalley group G_2(2) of order 12096. One of the four maximal subgroups of G_2(2) of order 192 preserves the quaternion subalgebra of the E_7 root system. The other three maximal subgroups of orders 432,192 and 336 are the automorphism groups of the root systems of the maximal Lie algebras E_6xU(1), SU(2)xSO(12), and SU(8) respectively. The 7-dimensional manifolds built with the use of these discrete groups could be of potential interest for the compactification of the M-theory in 11-dimension.

Abstract:Finite dimensional Lie algebras are semi-direct product of the semisimple Lie algebras and solvable Lie algebras. Brieskorn gave the connection between simple Lie algebras and simple singularities. Simple Lie algebras have been well understood, but not the solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras. It is extremely important to establish connections between singularities and solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras. In this article, a new natural connection between the set of complex analytic isolated hypersurface singularities and the set of finite dimensional solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras has been constructed. We construct finite dimensional solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras naturally from isolated hypersurface singularities. These constructions help us to understand the solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras from the geometric point of view. Moreover, it is known that the classification of nilpotent Lie algebras in higher dimensions (> 7) remains to be a vast open area. There are one-parameter families of non-isomorphic nilpotent Lie algebras (but no two-parameter families) in dimension seven. Dimension seven is the watershed of the existence of such families. It is well-known that no such family exists in dimension less than seven, while it is hard to construct one-parameter family in dimension greater than seven. In this article, we construct an one-parameter family of solvable (resp. nilpotent) Lie algebras of dimension 11 (resp. 10) from (E) over tilde (7) singularities and show that the weak Torelli-type theorem holds. We shall also construct an one-parameter family of solvable (resp. nilpotent) Lie algebras of dimension 12 (resp. 11) from (E) over tilde (8) singularities and show that the Torelli-type theorem holds. Moreover, we investigate the numerical relation between the dimensions of the new Lie algebras and Yau algebras. Finally, the new Lie algebras arising from fewnomial isolated singularities are also computed.

Abstract:This manuscript has two goals: 1. To write an explicit description of the degenerate residual spectrum of the split, simple, simply-connected, exceptional groups of type $E_n$ (for $n=6,7,8$). 2. To set a practical guide for similar calculations and, in particular, to describe various methods of ``computational representation theory'' relevant to the study of residues of automorphic Eisenstein series. In Part I we supply background information and notations from the theory of automorphic representations as well as concrete information on the exceptional groups of type $E_n$ and their representation theory over non-Archimedean local fields. In Part II we make a systematic study of the residual spectrum of these groups where each chapter is devoted to a certain aspect of theory, it begins with methodical section and continues with sections devoted to the results for each of these groups. We describe completely the residual (square-integrable and non-square integrable) spectrum of the groups of type $E_6$ and $E_7$ and an almost complete description in the case of the group of type $E_8$. We also study and list Siegel-Weil like identities between residual representations of these groups and list the Arthur parameters for their square-integrable residual representations.

Closed Form of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Formula for the Generators of Semisimple Complex Lie Algebras

Abstract:Recently it has been introduced an algorithm Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula, which extends the Van-Brunt and Visser recent results, leading to new closed forms of BCH formula. More recently, it has been shown that there are {\it 13 types} of such commutator algebras. We show, by providing the explicit solutions, that these include the generators of the semisimple complex Lie algebras. More precisely, for any pair, $X$, $Y$ of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y)=\exp(W) $$ The derivation of such closed forms follows, in part, by using the above mentioned recent results. The complete derivation is provided by considering the structure of of the root system. Furthermore, if $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ are three generators of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find, for a wide class of cases, $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$ and $Z$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y) \exp(Z)=\exp(W) $$ It turns out that the relevant commutator algebras are {\it type 1c-i}, {\it type 4} and {\it type 5}. A key result concerns an iterative application of the algorithm leading to relevant extensions of the cases admitting closed forms of the BCH formula. Here we provide the main steps of such an iteration that will be developed in a forthcoming paper.
