Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamics especially the Joule-Thomson expansion of the $n$-dimensional FRW (Friedmann-Robertson-Walker) universe with a perfect fluid. We derive the thermodynamic equations of state $P=P(V, T)$ for the $n$-dimensional FRW universe in Einstein gravity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where the thermodynamic pressure $P$ defined by the work density $W$ of the perfect fluid, $i.e.$ $P\equiv W$. Furthermore, we present the Joule-Thomson expansion as an application of these equations of state to elucidate the cooling-heating properties of the $n$-dimensional FRW universe. We determine the inversion temperature and inversion pressure in the FRW universe with arbitrary dimensions for the first time, and illustrate the characteristics of inversion curves and isenthalpic curves in the $T$-$P$ plane. This study offers insights into deepening our comprehension of cooling and heating regions in the FRW universe, thereby revealing its expansion mechanisms.

We establish uniqueness of the Gibbs state and exponential decay of the correlation functions. Then, we apply this expansion to the Perron-Frobenius operator of weakly coupled map lattices.

Abstract:We explore the thermodynamic and phase transition properties of asymptotically AdS black holes within Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, focusing on Joule Thomson expansion. Thermodynamics is studied in the extended phase space, where the cosmological constant serves as thermodynamic pressure. We observe that the black hole undergoes a phase transition similar to that of a van der Waals system. We analyze charged and neutral cases separately to distinguish the effect of charge and Gauss Bonnet parameter on critical behavior and examine the phase structure. We find that the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter behaves similarly to black hole charge or spin, guiding the phase structure. To understand the underlying phase structure determined by the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient $\alpha$, we introduce a new order parameter. We discover that the change in the conjugate variable to the Gauss-Bonnet parameter acts as an order parameter, demonstrating a critical exponent of $1/2$ in the vicinity of the critical point. Since the phase structure is analogous to that of a van der Waals fluid, we investigate the Joule-Thomson expansion of the black hole. We analytically study the Joule-Thomson expansion, focusing on three key characteristics: the Joule-Thomson coefficient, inversion curves, and isenthalpic curves. We obtain isenthalpic curves in the $T-P$ plane and illustrate the cooling-heating regions.

Abstract:In this second part of our two-series on extracting the Hawking temperature of dynamical black holes, we focus into spacetimes that are conformal transformations of static spacetimes. Our previous investigation builds upon the Unruh-Hawking analogy, which relates the spacetime of a uniformly accelerating observer to the near-horizon region of a black hole, to obtain the Hawking temperature. However, in this work, we explicitly compute the Bogoliubov coefficients associated with incoming and outgoing modes, which not only yields the temperature but also thermal spectrum of particles emitted by a black hole. For illustration, we take the simplest nontrivial example of the linear Vaidya spacetime, which is conformal to the static metric and using this property, we analytically solve the massless scalar field in its background. This allows the explicit computations of the Bogoliubov coefficients to study the particle production in this spacetime. We also derive an expression for the total mass of such dynamical spacetimes using the conformal Killing vector. We then perform differential variations of the mass formula to determine whether the laws of dynamical black hole mechanics correspond to the laws of thermodynamics.

Short Interval Expansion of Rényi Entropy on Torus

Abstract:We investigate the short interval expansion of the Rényi entropy for two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) on a torus. We require the length of the interval ℓ to be small with respect to the spatial and temporal sizes of the torus. The operator product expansion of the twist operators allows us to compute the short interval expansion of the Rényi entropy at any temperature. In particular, we pay special attention to the large c CFTs dual to the AdS3 gravity and its cousins. At both low and high temperature limits, we read the Rényi entropies to order ℓ6, and find good agreements with holographic results. Moreover, the expansion allows us to read 1/c contribution, which is hard to get by expanding the thermal density matrix. We generalize the study to the case with the chemical potential as well.

Abstract:It is shown that aspects of the extended thermodynamic properties of the Taub-Bolt-AdS spacetime in four dimensions are similar to those of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. In a high temperature expansion, the equations of state begin to deviate only at next-to-subleading orders. By analogy with what has been done for black holes, Taub-Bolt's thermodynamic equations are used to define holographic heat engines, the first examples of gravitational heat engines defined using a spacetime that is not a black hole. As a further comparison, the Taub-Bolt engine efficiency is computed for two special kinds of engine cycle and compared to the results for analogous Schwarzschild black hole engine cycles.

Abstract:In this work we study the inversion temperature associated with the Joule-Thomson expansion from the thermodynamics of AdS-Reissner-Nördstrom black holes. We include quantum corrections in a cosmological fluid that can describe phantom dark matter or quintessence, both in a Kiselev scenario. The description of such physical systems involves numerical solutions and the results are presented as temperature-pressure plots for various values of the parameters of our model. We find non-zero minimum inversion temperatures as well as non-zero minimum pressures depending on the values of those parameters. Completing our study, we also find isenthalpic curves associated with black hole fixed mass processes.

Abstract:In this work, we extend the study in \href{<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/JHEP11(2022)013" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>}{JHEP11(2022)013} incorporating the AdS/CFT duality to establish a relationship between the local temperatures (Tolman temperatures) of a large (AdS) spherical and a (AdS) planar Schwarzschild black hole near the AdS boundary considering Gauss-Bonnet curvature correction in the gravitational action. We have shown that the higher curvature corrections appear in the local temperature relationship due to the inclusion of Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. By transforming the metric into Fefferman-Graham form, we have calculated the energy density of the conformal fluid at the boundary. The obtained result contains finite coupling corrections which are holographically induced by the Gauss-Bonnet curvature correction in the bulk theory. Following the well known approach of fluid/gravity duality, the energy density of the conformal fluid at the boundary is then compared with the black body radiation energy density. This comparison shows that the energy density is proportional to the temperature of the conformal fluid. The temperature of the conformal fluid is then shown to be related to the Tolman temperature of the black hole which then eventually helps us to establish both the Hawking temperature and Tolman temperature relationship between large spherically symmetric and planar Schwarzschild black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity near the AdS boundary.

Thermodynamics of Einstein static Universe with boundary

Abstract:The de Sitter state and the static Einstein Universe are the unique states, which have constant Ricci scalar curvature ${\cal R}$. Earlier it was shown that such unique symmetry of the de Sitter state leads to the special thermodynamic properties of this state, which are determined by the local temperature $T=1/(\pi R)$, where $R$ is the radius of the cosmological horizon. Then, what happens in static Universe? We consider the Einstein Universe, which has boundary. This can be the real physical boundary, or the border between two halves of the $R\times S^3$ Universe, if there is no contact between the halves. It appears that the static Einstein Universe with boundary is characterized by the same local temperature $T=1/(\pi R)$ as the de Sitter state. The thermodynamics of the bounded Einstein Universe is also similar to that of de Sitter. If this Universe contains Zel'dovich stiff matter, there is the holographic connection between the entropy of the Universe and the surface entropy $A/4G$ of the boundary. This means that in thermodynamics the physical boundary of the static Einstein Universe plays the role of the de Sitter cosmological horizon.

Heat capacity and quantum compressibility of dynamical spacetimes with thermal particle creation

Abstract:This work continues the investigation in two recent papers on the quantum thermodynamics of spacetimes, 1) placing what was studied in [1] for thermal quantum fields in the context of early universe cosmology, and 2) extending the considerations of vacuum compressibility of dynamical spaces treated in [2] to dynamical spacetimes with thermal quantum fields. We begin with a warning that thermal equilibrium condition is not guaranteed to exist or maintained in a dynamical setting and thus finite temperature quantum field theory in cosmological spacetimes needs more careful considerations than what is often described in textbooks. A full description requires nonequilibrium quantum field theory in dynamical spacetimes using `in-in' techniques. A more manageable subclass of dynamics is where thermal equilibrium conditions are established at both the beginning and the end of evolution are both well defined. Here we shall assume an in-vacuum state. It has been shown that if the intervening dynamics has an initial period of exponential expansion, such as in inflationary cosmology, particles created from the parametric amplification of the vacuum fluctuations in the initial vacuum will have a thermal spectrum measured at the out-state. Under these conditions finite temperature field theory can be applied to calculate the quantum thermodynamic quantities. Here we consider a massive conformal scalar field in a closed four-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe based on the simple analytically solvable Bernard-Duncan model. We calculate the energy density of particles created from an in-vacuum and derive the partition function. From the free energy we then derive the heat capacity and the quantum compressibility of the spacetimes with thermal particle creation. We end with some discussions and suggestions for further work in this program of studies.

Abstract:It has been shown previously, that the spatial thermal variation of a thermal medium can be recast as a variation in the Euclidean metric. It is now extended to temporal variations in temperature, for a non-relativistic thermal bath, which remains in local thermal equilibrium. This is achieved by examining the thermal field theory in a five-dimensional space-time-temperature. The bulk thermodynamic quantity, namely the energy density, is calculated for a neutral scalar field with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the concept of recasting thermal variations as a variation in the metric is extended to thermal systems in a gravitational field. The Einstein field equations, in the 5-D space-time-temperature, is determined. It is shown that the resulting Ricci scalar can lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking, leading to the Higgs mechanism. In essence, the asymmetry in the distribution of temperature in space-time can translate to spontaneous symmetry breaking of particle fields, in a very strong gravitational field.

Thermal Casimir effect for a Dirac field on flat space with a nontrivial circular boundary condition

Abstract:This work investigates the thermal Casimir effect associated with a massive spinor field defined on a four-dimensional flat space with a circularly compactified spatial dimension whose periodicity is oriented along a vector in $xy$-plane. We employ the generalized zeta function method to establish a finite definition for the vacuum free energy density. This definition conveniently separates into the zero-temperature Casimir energy density and additional terms accounting for temperature corrections. The structure of existing divergences is analyzed from the asymptotic behavior of the spinor heat kernel function and removed in the renormalization by subtracting scheme. The only non-null heat coefficient is the one associated with the Euclidean divergence. We also address the need for a finite renormalization to treat the ambiguity in the zeta function regularization prescription \text{associated} with this Euclidean heat kernel coefficient and ensure that the renormalization procedure is unique. The high- and low-temperature asymptotic limits are also explored. In particular, we explicitly show that free energy density lacks a classical limit at high temperatures, and the entropy density agrees with the Nernst heat theorem at low temperatures.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Volume 39, Issue 06, 28 February 2024. The Jordan frame (JF) field equations of scalar-tensor (ST) theory are strongly coupled and, the exact solutions cannot be obtained easily. By using the conformal transformation (CT), the ST action has been translated to the Einstein frame (EF) where the theory is known as the Einstein-dilaton (Ed) gravity. Also, an [math]-dimensional electromagnetic Lagrangian has been introduced which remains invariant under CT. The Ed-conformal-invariant field equations, which are confronted with the mathematical indeterminacy problem, have been solved by use of a power-law ansatz function. We have introduced two classes of black holes (BHs) which are asymptotically non-flat and non-AdS. The Ed exact solutions can produce BHs with three, two, one and without horizons. By calculating the thermodynamic quantities, and making use of the Smarr mass relation it has been shown that the thermodynamical first law is valid in the EF. Thermal stability of Ed BHs has been analyzed by considering specific heats, thermodynamic Ricci scalars and Gibbs free energies, separately. Then using the inverse CTs, the ST exact solutions have been obtained which show two classes of horizonless, one-horizon, two-horizon and three-horizon BHs. We found that CTs preserve thermodynamic quantities and, thermodynamic properties of the ST BHs are just like those of Ed ones.

Abstract:We provide a transparent discussion of the high temperature asymptotic behaviour of Cosmology in a dilaton-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (dEGB) scenario of modified gravity with vanishing scalar potential. In particular, we show that it has a clear interpretation in terms of only three attractors (stable critical points) of a set of autonomous differential equations: w = -1/3, w = 1 and 1 < w < 7/3, where w ≡ p/ρ is the equation of state, defined as the ratio of the total pressure and the total energy density. All the possible different high-temperature evolution histories of the model are exhausted by only eight paths in the flow of the set of the autonomous differential equations. Our discussion clearly explains why five out of them are characterized by a swift transition of the system toward the attractor, while the remaining three show a more convoluted evolution, where the system follows a meta-stable equation of state at intermediate temperatures before eventually jumping to the real attractor at higher temperatures. Compared to standard Cosmology, the regions of the dEGB parameter space with w = -1/3 show a strong enhancement of the expected Gravitational Wave stochastic background produced by the primordial plasma of relativistic particles of the Standard Model. This is due to the very peculiar fact that dEGB allows to have an epoch when the energy density ρ rad of the relativistic plasma dominates the energy of the Universe while at the same time the rate of dilution with T of the total energy density is slower than what usually expected during radiation dominance. This allows to use the bound from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) to put in dEGB a constraint T RH ≲ (10 8 – 10 9 ) GeV on the reheating temperature of the Universe T RH . Such BBN bound is complementary to late-time constraints from compact binary mergers.

Conformal Vacua and Entropy in de Sitter Space

Abstract:The dS/CFT correspondence is illuminated through an analysis of massive scalar field theory in d-dimensional de Sitter space. We consider a one-parameter family of dS-invariant vacua related by Bogolyubov transformations and compute the corresponding Green functions. It is shown that none of these Green functions correspond to the one obtained by analytic continuation from AdS. Among this family of vacua are in (out) vacua which have no incoming (outgoing) particles on past (future) infinity. Surprisingly, it is shown that in odd spacetime dimensions the in and out vacua are the same, implying the absence of particle production for this state. The correlators of the boundary CFT, as defined by the dS/CFT correspondence, are shown to depend on the choice of vacuum state - the correlators with all points on past infinity vanish in the in vacuum. For dS_3 we argue that this bulk vacuum dependence of the correlators is dual to a deformation of the boundary CFT_2 by a specific marginal operator. It is also shown that Witten's non-standard de Sitter inner product (slightly modified) reduces to the standard inner product of the boundary field theory. Next we consider a scalar field in the Kerr-dS_3 Euclidean vacuum. A density matrix is constructed by tracing out over modes which are causally inaccessible to a single geodesic observer. This is shown to be a thermal state at the Kerr-dS_3 temperature and angular potential. It is further shown that, assuming Cardy's formula, the microscopic entropy of such a thermal state in the boundary CFT precisely equals the Bekenstein-Hawking value of one quarter the area of the Kerr-dS_3 horizon.

Abstract:We present an exact solution of Einstein's field equations in toroidal coordinates. The solution has three regions: an interior with a string equation of state; an Israel boundary layer; an exterior with constant isotropic pressure and constant density, locally isometric to anti-de Sitter spacetime. The exterior can be a cosmological vacuum with negative cosmological constant. The size and mass of the toroidal loop depend on the size of the cosmological constant.

Real-time observables in de Sitter thermodynamics

Abstract:We study real-time finite-temperature correlators for free scalars of any mass in a $dS_{d+1}$ static patch in any dimension. We show that whenever the inverse temperature is a rational multiple of the inverse de Sitter temperature, certain Matsubara poles of the symmetric Wightman function disappear. At the de Sitter temperature, we explicitly show how the Lorentzian thermal correlators can all be obtained by analytic continuations from the round $S^{d+1}$. We establish the precise relation between the Harish-Chandra character for $SO(1,d+1)$ and the integrated spectral function, providing a novel dynamical perspective on the former and enabling generalizations. Furthermore, we study scalars with exceptional non-positive masses. We provide a physical picture for the distinctive structures of their characters. For the massless case, we perform a consistent static patch quantization, and find the unique $S^{d+1}$ correlator that analytically continues to the correlators in the quantum theory.

Abstract:We consider the quasi-de Sitter geometry of the inflationary universe. We calculate the energy flux of the slowly rolling background scalar field through the quasi-de Sitter apparent horizon and set it equal to the change of the entropy (1/4 of the area) multiplied by the temperature, dE = TdS. Remarkably, this thermodynamic law reproduces the Friedmann equation for the rolling scalar field. The flux of the slowly rolling field through the horizon of the quasi-de Sitter geometry is similar to the accretion of a rolling scalar field onto a black hole, which we also analyse. Next we add inflaton fluctuations which generate scalar metric perturbations. Metric perturbations result in a variation of the area entropy. Again, the equation dE = TdS with fluctuations reproduces the linearized Einstein equations. In this picture as long as the Einstein equations hold, holography does not put limits on the quantum field theory during inflation. Due to the accumulating metric perturbations, the horizon area during inflation randomly wiggles with dispersion increasing with time. We discuss this in connection with the stochastic description of inflation. We also address the issue of the instability of inflaton fluctuations in the `hot tin can' picture of the de Sitter horizon.
