Abstract:It has been shown previously, that the spatial thermal variation of a thermal medium can be recast as a variation in the Euclidean metric. It is now extended to temporal variations in temperature, for a non-relativistic thermal bath, which remains in local thermal equilibrium. This is achieved by examining the thermal field theory in a five-dimensional space-time-temperature. The bulk thermodynamic quantity, namely the energy density, is calculated for a neutral scalar field with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the concept of recasting thermal variations as a variation in the metric is extended to thermal systems in a gravitational field. The Einstein field equations, in the 5-D space-time-temperature, is determined. It is shown that the resulting Ricci scalar can lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking, leading to the Higgs mechanism. In essence, the asymmetry in the distribution of temperature in space-time can translate to spontaneous symmetry breaking of particle fields, in a very strong gravitational field.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore how to extend the thermal field theory to the five - dimensional spacetime - temperature framework in order to study the time - varying temperature in the non - relativistic thermal bath and generalize this concept in the thermal system in the gravitational field. Specifically, the paper mainly focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Introducing the 5D spacetime - temperature framework**: By introducing the five - dimensional spacetime - temperature framework, study the time - varying temperature in the non - relativistic thermal bath. This method allows the change of temperature to be re - interpreted as the change of metric, thus connecting the thermal gradient with the curvature of spacetime. 2. **Calculating the energy density**: For a neutral scalar field with a time - dependent Hamiltonian, calculate its energy density. This helps to understand the influence of the change of temperature with time and space on the thermal system. 3. **Deriving the Einstein field equations**: Derive the Einstein field equations in the five - dimensional spacetime - temperature framework and express them as the usual four - dimensional spacetime covariant operators. This process will lead to additional terms in the Ricci tensor and Ricci scalar. 4. **Spontaneous symmetry breaking**: Study whether the Ricci scalar resulting from the non - minimal coupling between the scalar Lagrangian and gravity can trigger spontaneous symmetry breaking and then lead to the Higgs mechanism when the scalar Lagrangian is non - minimally coupled to gravity. Specifically, a negative Ricci scalar can make the \((m^{2}+R)\phi^{2}\) term in the Lagrangian become negative, that is: \[ (m^{2}+R)\phi^{2}\to-\mu^{2}\phi^{2} \] This transformation may lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking. ### Formula summary - **Five - dimensional metric tensor**: \[ G^{(5)}_{ab}=\begin{bmatrix} h_{00}&0\\ 0&g^{(4)}_{\mu\nu} \end{bmatrix} \] where \(h_{00} = s(x,t)^{2}\), and \(g^{(4)}_{\mu\nu}\) is the four - dimensional spacetime metric tensor. - **Five - dimensional Ricci tensor**: \[ R^{(5)}_{ab}=\begin{bmatrix} R_{\beta\beta}&0\\ 0&R^{(4)}_{\mu\nu}-\frac{1}{s}\nabla^{(4)}_{\mu}\nabla^{(4)}_{\nu}s \end{bmatrix} \] where \(R_{\beta\beta}=s\nabla^{(4)}_{\mu}\nabla^{(4)}_{\mu}s\). - **Five - dimensional Ricci scalar**: \[ R^{(5)}=R^{(4)}-\frac{2}{s}\nabla^{(4)}_{\mu}\nabla^{(4)}_{\mu}s \] - **Spontaneous symmetry breaking condition**: \[ R^{(5)}<-\frac{m^{2}}{\zeta} \] or equivalently: \[ \frac{2}{s}\nabla^{(4)}_{\mu}\nabla^{(4)}_{\mu}s>R^{(4)}+\frac{m^{2}}{\zeta} \] Through these studies, the paper reveals how the asymmetry of the spacetime - temperature distribution is transformed into the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the particle field, especially in the strong gravitational field.
