Abstract:The expansion of a hypergraph, a natural extension of the notion of expansion in graphs, is defined as the minimum over all cuts in the hypergraph of the ratio of the number of the hyperedges cut to the size of the smaller side of the cut. We study the Hypergraph Small Set Expansion problem, which, for a parameter $\delta \in (0,1/2]$, asks to compute the cut having the least expansion while having at most $\delta$ fraction of the vertices on the smaller side of the cut. We present two algorithms. Our first algorithm gives an $\tilde O(\delta^{-1} \sqrt{\log n})$ approximation. The second algorithm finds a set with expansion $\tilde O(\delta^{-1}(\sqrt{d_{\text{max}}r^{-1}\log r\, \phi^*} + \phi^*))$ in a $r$--uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $d_{\text{max}}$ (where $\phi^*$ is the expansion of the optimal solution). Using these results, we also obtain algorithms for the Small Set Vertex Expansion problem: we get an $\tilde O(\delta^{-1} \sqrt{\log n})$ approximation algorithm and an algorithm that finds a set with vertex expansion $O\left(\delta^{-1}\sqrt{\phi^V \log d_{\text{max}} } + \delta^{-1} \phi^V\right)$ (where $\phi^V$ is the vertex expansion of the optimal solution). For $\delta=1/2$, Hypergraph Small Set Expansion is equivalent to the hypergraph expansion problem. In this case, our approximation factor of $O(\sqrt{\log n})$ for expansion in hypergraphs matches the corresponding approximation factor for expansion in graphs due to ARV.
On the Hardness of Approximating the $k$-Way Hypergraph Cut problem

Abstract:We consider the approximability of the k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT problem: the input is an edge-weighted hypergraph G = (V, epsilon) and an integer k and the goal is to remove a min-weight subset of the edges such that the residual hypergraph has at least k connected components. When G is a graph this problem admits a 2(1 - 1/0-approximation (Saran and Vazirani, SIAM J. Comput. 1995). However, there has been no non-trivial approximation ratio for general hypergraphs. In this note we show, via a very simple reduction, that an alpha-approximation for k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT implies an alpha(2)-approximation for the DENSEST l-SUBGRAPH problem. Our reduction combined with the hardness result of (Manurangsi, STOC'17) implies that under the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), there is no n(1/(loglogn)c)-approximation for k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT where c > 0 is a universal constant and n is the number of nodes. k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT is a special case of nodes. k-WAY HYPERGRAPH CUT is a special case k-WAY SUBMODULAR PARTITION and hence our hardness applies to this latter problem as well. These hardness results are in contrast to a 2-approximation for closely related problems where the goal is to separate k given terminals (Chekuri and Ene, FOCS'11), (Ene et al., SODA'13).

Abstract:In the non-uniform sparsest cut problem, we are given a supply graph G and a demand graph D, both with the same set of nodes V. The goal is to find a cut of V that minimizes the ratio of the total capacity on the edges of G crossing the cut over the total demand of the crossing edges of D. In this work, we study the non-uniform sparsest cut problem for supply graphs with bounded treewidth k. For this case, Gupta et al. (ACM STOC, 2013) obtained a 2-approximation with polynomial running time for fixed k, and it remained open the question of whether there exists a c-approximation algorithm for a constant c independent of k, that runs in FPT$$\textsf{FPT}$$ time. We answer this question in the affirmative. We design a 2-approximation algorithm for the non-uniform sparsest cut with bounded treewidth supply graphs that runs in FPT$$\textsf{FPT}$$ time, when parameterized by the treewidth. Our algorithm is based on rounding the optimal solution of a linear programming relaxation inspired by the Sherali-Adams hierarchy. In contrast to the classic Sherali-Adams approach, we construct a relaxation driven by a tree decomposition of the supply graph by including a carefully chosen set of lifting variables and constraints to encode information of subsets of nodes with super-constant size, and at the same time we have a sufficiently small linear program that can be solved in FPT$$\textsf{FPT}$$ time.

Efficient Approximation for Subgraph-Hitting Problems in Sparse Graphs and Geometric Intersection Graphs

Abstract:We investigate a fundamental vertex-deletion problem called (Induced) Subgraph Hitting: given a graph $G$ and a set $\mathcal{F}$ of forbidden graphs, the goal is to compute a minimum-sized set $S$ of vertices of $G$ such that $G-S$ does not contain any graph in $\mathcal{F}$ as an (induced) subgraph. This is a generic problem that encompasses many well-known problems that were extensively studied on their own, particularly (but not only) from the perspectives of both approximation and parameterization. In this paper, we study the approximability of the problem on a large variety of graph classes. Our first result is a linear-time $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation reduction from (Induced) Subgraph Hitting on any graph class $\mathcal{G}$ of bounded expansion to the same problem on bounded degree graphs within $\mathcal{G}$. This directly yields linear-size $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation lossy kernels for the problems on any bounded-expansion graph classes. Our second result is a linear-time approximation scheme for (Induced) Subgraph Hitting on any graph class $\mathcal{G}$ of polynomial expansion, based on the local-search framework of Har-Peled and Quanrud [SICOMP 2017]. This approximation scheme can be applied to a more general family of problems that aim to hit all subgraphs satisfying a certain property $\pi$ that is efficiently testable and has bounded diameter. Both of our results have applications to Subgraph Hitting (not induced) on wide classes of geometric intersection graphs, resulting in linear-size lossy kernels and (near-)linear time approximation schemes for the problem.

Near-optimal Size Linear Sketches for Hypergraph Cut Sparsifiers

Abstract:A $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-sparsifier of a hypergraph $G(V,E)$ is a (weighted) subgraph that preserves the value of every cut to within a $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-factor. It is known that every hypergraph with $n$ vertices admits a $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-sparsifier with $\tilde{O}(n/\epsilon^2)$ hyperedges. In this work, we explore the task of building such a sparsifier by using only linear measurements (a \emph{linear sketch}) over the hyperedges of $G$, and provide nearly-matching upper and lower bounds for this task. Specifically, we show that there is a randomized linear sketch of size $\widetilde{O}(n r \log(m) / \epsilon^2)$ bits which with high probability contains sufficient information to recover a $(1 \pm \epsilon)$ cut-sparsifier with $\tilde{O}(n/\epsilon^2)$ hyperedges for any hypergraph with at most $m$ edges each of which has arity bounded by $r$. This immediately gives a dynamic streaming algorithm for hypergraph cut sparsification with an identical space complexity, improving on the previous best known bound of $\widetilde{O}(n r^2 \log^4(m) / \epsilon^2)$ bits of space (Guha, McGregor, and Tench, PODS 2015). We complement our algorithmic result above with a nearly-matching lower bound. We show that for every $\epsilon \in (0,1)$, one needs $\Omega(nr \log(m/n) / \log(n))$ bits to construct a $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-sparsifier via linear sketching, thus showing that our linear sketch achieves an optimal dependence on both $r$ and $\log(m)$.

Abstract:The notion of vertex sparsification (in particular cut-sparsification) is introduced in (Moitra, 2009), where it was shown that for any graph $G = (V, E)$ and any subset of $k$ terminals $K \subset V$, there is a polynomial time algorithm to construct a graph $H = (K, E_H)$ \emph{on just the terminal set} so that simultaneously for all cuts $(A, K-A)$, the value of the minimum cut in $G$ separating $A$ from $K -A$ is approximately the same as the value of the corresponding cut in $H$. Then approximation algorithms can be run directly on $H$ as a proxy for running on $G$. We give the first super-constant lower bounds for how well a cut-sparsifier $H$ can simultaneously approximate all minimum cuts in $G$. %In fact, we prove that in general we cannot hope for approximation factors better than We prove a lower bound of $\Omega(\log^{1/4} k)$ – this is polynomially-related to the known upper bound of $O(\log k/\log \log k)$. Independently, a similar lower bound is given in (Makarychev, Makarychev, 2010). This is an exponential improvement on the $\Omega(\log \log k)$ bound given in (Leighton, Moitra, 2010) which in fact was for a stronger vertex sparsification guarantee, and did not apply to cut sparsifiers. Despite this negative result, we show that for many natural optimization problems, we do not need to incur a multiplicative penalty for our reduction. Roughly, we show that any rounding algorithm which also works for the $0$-extension relaxation can be used to construct good vertex-sparsifiers for which the optimization problem is easy. Using this, we obtain optimal $O(\log k)$-competitive Steiner oblivious routing schemes, which generalize the results in (Raecke, 2008). We also demonstrate that for a wide range of graph packing problems (which includes maximum concurrent flow, maximum multiflow and multicast routing, among others, as a special case), the integrality gap of the linear program is always at most $O(\log k)$ times the integrality gap restricted to trees. Lastly, we use our ideas to give an efficient construction for vertex-sparsifiers that match the current best existential results – this was previously open. Our algorithm makes novel use of Earth-mover constraints.
Tight Lower Bounds for Directed Cut Sparsification and Distributed Min-Cut

Abstract:In this paper, we consider two fundamental cut approximation problems on large graphs. We prove new lower bounds for both problems that are optimal up to logarithmic factors. The first problem is to approximate cuts in balanced directed graphs. In this problem, the goal is to build a data structure that $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-approximates cut values in graphs with $n$ vertices. For arbitrary directed graphs, such a data structure requires $\Omega(n^2)$ bits even for constant $\epsilon$. To circumvent this, recent works study $\beta$-balanced graphs, meaning that for every directed cut, the total weight of edges in one direction is at most $\beta$ times that in the other direction. We consider two models: the {\em for-each} model, where the goal is to approximate each cut with constant probability, and the {\em for-all} model, where all cuts must be preserved simultaneously. We improve the previous $\Omega(n \sqrt{\beta/\epsilon})$ lower bound to $\tilde{\Omega}(n \sqrt{\beta}/\epsilon)$ in the for-each model, and we improve the previous $\Omega(n \beta/\epsilon)$ lower bound to $\Omega(n \beta/\epsilon^2)$ in the for-all model. This resolves the main open questions of (Cen et al., ICALP, 2021). The second problem is to approximate the global minimum cut in a local query model, where we can only access the graph via degree, edge, and adjacency queries. We improve the previous $\Omega\bigl(\frac{m}{k}\bigr)$ query complexity lower bound to $\Omega\bigl(\min\{m, \frac{m}{\epsilon^2 k}\}\bigr)$ for this problem, where $m$ is the number of edges, $k$ is the size of the minimum cut, and we seek a $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation. In addition, we show that existing upper bounds with slight modifications match our lower bound up to logarithmic factors.

Abstract:We study the k-route cut problem: given an undirected edge-weighted graph G = (V, E), a collection {(s1, t1), (s2, t2), …, (sr, tr)} of source-sink pairs, and an integer connectivity requirement k, the goal is to find a minimum-weight subset E′ of edges to remove, such that the connectivity of every pair (si, ti) falls below k. Specifically, in the edge-connectivity version, EC-kRC, the requirement is that there are at most (k − 1) edge-disjoint paths connecting si to ti in G∖E′, while in the vertex-connectivity version, VC-kRC, the same requirement is for vertex-disjoint paths. Prior to our work, poly-logarithmic approximation algorithms have been known for the special case where k ⩽ 3, but no non-trivial approximation algorithms were known for any value k > 3, except in the single-source setting. We show an O(klog 3/2r)-approximation algorithm for EC-kRC with uniform edge weights, and several polylogarithmic bi-criteria approximation algorithms for EC-kRC and VC-kRC, where the connectivity requirement k is violated by a constant factor. We complement these upper bounds by proving that VC-kRC is hard to approximate to within a factor of kϵ for some fixed ϵ > 0. We then turn to study a simpler version of VC-kRC, where only one source-sink pair is present. We give a simple bi-criteria approximation algorithm for this case, and show evidence that even this restricted version of the problem may be hard to approximate. For example, we prove that the single source-sink pair version of VC-kRC has no constant-factor approximation, assuming Feige’s Random κ-AND assumption.
A simpler and parallelizable $O(\sqrt{\log n})$-approximation algorithm for Sparsest Cut

Abstract:Currently, the best known tradeoff between approximation ratio and complexity for the Sparsest Cut problem is achieved by the algorithm in [Sherman, FOCS 2009]: it computes $O(\sqrt{(\log n)/\varepsilon})$-approximation using $O(n^\varepsilon\log^{O(1)}n)$ maxflows for any $\varepsilon\in[\Theta(1/\log n),\Theta(1)]$. It works by solving the SDP relaxation of [Arora-Rao-Vazirani, STOC 2004] using the Multiplicative Weights Update algorithm (MW) of [Arora-Kale, JACM 2016]. To implement one MW step, Sherman approximately solves a multicommodity flow problem using another application of MW. Nested MW steps are solved via a certain ``chaining'' algorithm that combines results of multiple calls to the maxflow algorithm. We present an alternative approach that avoids solving the multicommodity flow problem and instead computes ``violating paths''. This simplifies Sherman's algorithm by removing a need for a nested application of MW, and also allows parallelization: we show how to compute $O(\sqrt{(\log n)/\varepsilon})$-approximation via $O(\log^{O(1)}n)$ maxflows using $O(n^\varepsilon)$ processors. We also revisit Sherman's chaining algorithm, and present a simpler version together with a new analysis.

Approximating Low-Dimensional Coverage Problems

Abstract:We study the complexity of the maximum coverage problem, restricted to set systems of bounded VC-dimension. Our main result is a fixed-parameter tractable approximation scheme: an algorithm that outputs a $(1-\eps)$-approximation to the maximum-cardinality union of $k$ sets, in running time $O(f(\eps,k,d)\cdot poly(n))$ where $n$ is the problem size, $d$ is the VC-dimension of the set system, and $f(\eps,k,d)$ is exponential in $(kd/\eps)^c$ for some constant $c$. We complement this positive result by showing that the function $f(\eps,k,d)$ in the running-time bound cannot be replaced by a function depending only on $(\eps,d)$ or on $(k,d)$, under standard complexity assumptions. We also present an improved upper bound on the approximation ratio of the greedy algorithm in special cases of the problem, including when the sets have bounded cardinality and when they are two-dimensional halfspaces. Complementing these positive results, we show that when the sets are four-dimensional halfspaces neither the greedy algorithm nor local search is capable of improving the worst-case approximation ratio of $1-1/e$ that the greedy algorithm achieves on arbitrary instances of maximum coverage.

Sparse Submodular Function Minimization

Abstract:In this paper we study the problem of minimizing a submodular function $f : 2^V \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ that is guaranteed to have a $k$-sparse minimizer. We give a deterministic algorithm that computes an additive $\epsilon$-approximate minimizer of such $f$ in $\widetilde{O}(\mathsf{poly}(k) \log(|f|/\epsilon))$ parallel depth using a polynomial number of queries to an evaluation oracle of $f$, where $|f| = \max_{S \subseteq V} |f(S)|$. Further, we give a randomized algorithm that computes an exact minimizer of $f$ with high probability using $\widetilde{O}(|V| \cdot \mathsf{poly}(k))$ queries and polynomial time. When $k = \widetilde{O}(1)$, our algorithms use either nearly-constant parallel depth or a nearly-linear number of evaluation oracle queries. All previous algorithms for this problem either use $\Omega(|V|)$ parallel depth or $\Omega(|V|^2)$ queries. In contrast to state-of-the-art weakly-polynomial and strongly-polynomial time algorithms for SFM, our algorithms use first-order optimization methods, e.g., mirror descent and follow the regularized leader. We introduce what we call {\em sparse dual certificates}, which encode information on the structure of sparse minimizers, and both our parallel and sequential algorithms provide new algorithmic tools for allowing first-order optimization methods to efficiently compute them. Correspondingly, our algorithm does not invoke fast matrix multiplication or general linear system solvers and in this sense is more combinatorial than previous state-of-the-art methods.

Tight Approximation and Kernelization Bounds for Vertex-Disjoint Shortest Paths

Abstract:We examine the possibility of approximating Maximum Vertex-Disjoint Shortest Paths. In this problem, the input is an edge-weighted (directed or undirected) $n$-vertex graph $G$ along with $k$ terminal pairs $(s_1,t_1),(s_2,t_2),\ldots,(s_k,t_k)$. The task is to connect as many terminal pairs as possible by pairwise vertex-disjoint paths such that each path is a shortest path between the respective terminals. Our work is anchored in the recent breakthrough by Lochet [SODA '21], which demonstrates the polynomial-time solvability of the problem for a fixed value of $k$. Lochet's result implies the existence of a polynomial-time $ck$-approximation for Maximum Vertex-Disjoint Shortest Paths, where $c \leq 1$ is a constant. Our first result suggests that this approximation algorithm is, in a sense, the best we can hope for. More precisely, assuming the gap-ETH, we exclude the existence of an $o(k)$-approximations within $f(k) \cdot $poly($n$) time for any function $f$ that only depends on $k$. Our second result demonstrates the infeasibility of achieving an approximation ratio of $n^{\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon}$ in polynomial time, unless P = NP. It is not difficult to show that a greedy algorithm selecting a path with the minimum number of arcs results in a $\lceil\sqrt{\ell}\rceil$-approximation, where $\ell$ is the number of edges in all the paths of an optimal solution. Since $\ell \leq n$, this underscores the tightness of the $n^{\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon}$-inapproximability bound. Additionally, we establish that Maximum Vertex-Disjoint Shortest Paths is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by $\ell$ but does not admit a polynomial kernel. Our hardness results hold for undirected graphs with unit weights, while our positive results extend to scenarios where the input graph is directed and features arbitrary (non-negative) edge weights.

A PTAS for $\ell_0$-Low Rank Approximation: Solving Dense CSPs over Reals

Abstract:We consider the Low Rank Approximation problem, where the input consists of a matrix $A \in \mathbb{R}^{n_R \times n_C}$ and an integer $k$, and the goal is to find a matrix $B$ of rank at most $k$ that minimizes $\| A - B \|_0$, which is the number of entries where $A$ and $B$ differ. For any constant $k$ and $\varepsilon > 0$, we present a polynomial time $(1 + \varepsilon)$-approximation time for this problem, which significantly improves the previous best $poly(k)$-approximation. Our algorithm is obtained by viewing the problem as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) where each row and column becomes a variable that can have a value from $\mathbb{R}^k$. In this view, we have a constraint between each row and column, which results in a {\em dense} CSP, a well-studied topic in approximation algorithms. While most of previous algorithms focus on finite-size (or constant-size) domains and involve an exhaustive enumeration over the entire domain, we present a new framework that bypasses such an enumeration in $\mathbb{R}^k$. We also use tools from the rich literature of Low Rank Approximation in different objectives (e.g., $\ell_p$ with $p \in (0, \infty)$) or domains (e.g., finite fields/generalized Boolean). We believe that our techniques might be useful to study other real-valued CSPs and matrix optimization problems. On the hardness side, when $k$ is part of the input, we prove that Low Rank Approximation is NP-hard to approximate within a factor of $\Omega(\log n)$. This is the first superconstant NP-hardness of approximation for any $p \in [0, \infty]$ that does not rely on stronger conjectures (e.g., the Small Set Expansion Hypothesis).

Abstract:We introduce a notion of code sparsification that generalizes the notion of cut sparsification in graphs. For a (linear) code $\mathcal{C} \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^n$ of dimension $k$ a $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-sparsification of size $s$ is given by a weighted set $S \subseteq [n]$ with $|S| \leq s$ such that for every codeword $c \in \mathcal{C}$ the projection $c|_S$ of $c$ to the set $S$ has (weighted) hamming weight which is a $(1 \pm \epsilon)$ approximation of the hamming weight of $c$. We show that for every code there exists a $(1 \pm \epsilon)$-sparsification of size $s = \widetilde{O}(k \log (q) / \epsilon^2)$. This immediately implies known results on graph and hypergraph cut sparsification up to polylogarithmic factors (with a simple unified proof). One application of our result is near-linear size sparsifiers for constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) over $\mathbb{F}_p$-valued variables whose unsatisfying assignments can be expressed as the zeros of a linear equation modulo a prime $p$. Building on this, we obtain a complete characterization of ternary Boolean CSPs that admit near-linear size sparsification. Finally, by connections between the eigenvalues of the Laplacians of Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{F}_2^k$ to the weights of codewords, we also give the first proof of the existence of spectral Cayley graph sparsifiers over $\mathbb{F}_2^k$ by Cayley graphs, i.e., where we sparsify the set of generators to nearly-optimal size.

Approximate packing of independent transversals in locally sparse graphs

Abstract:Consider a multipartite graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $n-o(n)$, parts $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ have size $|V_i|=n$, and every vertex has at most $o(n)$ neighbors in any part $V_i$. Loh and Sudakov proved that any such $G$ has an independent transversal. They further conjectured that the vertex set of $G$ can be decomposed into pairwise disjoint independent transversals. In the present paper, we resolve this conjecture approximately by showing that $G$ contains $n-o(n)$ pairwise disjoint independent transversals. As applications, we give approximate answers to questions of Yuster, and of Fischer, Kühn, and Osthus.

Sublinear Approximation Algorithms for Boxicity and Related Problems

Abstract:Boxicity of a graph G(V, E) is the minimum integer k such that G can be represented as the intersection graph of axis parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^k$. Cubicity is a variant of boxicity, where the axis parallel boxes in the intersection representation are restricted to be of unit length sides. Deciding whether boxicity (resp. cubicity) of a graph is at most k is NP-hard, even for k=2 or 3. Computing these parameters is inapproximable within $O(n^{1 - \epsilon})$-factor, for any $\epsilon >0$ in polynomial time unless NP=ZPP, even for many simple graph classes. In this paper, we give a polynomial time $\kappa(n)$ factor approximation algorithm for computing boxicity and a $\kappa(n)\lceil \log \log n\rceil$ factor approximation algorithm for computing the cubicity, where $\kappa(n) =2\left\lceil\frac{n\sqrt{\log \log n}}{\sqrt{\log n}}\right\rceil$. These o(n) factor approximation algorithms also produce the corresponding box (resp. cube) representations. As a special case, this resolves the question paused by Spinrad about polynomial time construction of o(n) dimensional box representations for boxicity 2 graphs. Other consequences of our approximation algorithm include $O(\kappa(n))$ factor approximation algorithms for computing the following parameters: the partial order dimension of finite posets, the interval dimension of finite posets, minimum chain cover of bipartite graphs, threshold dimension of split graphs and Ferrer's dimension of digraphs. Each of these parameters is inapproximable within an $O(n^{1 - \epsilon})$-factor, for any $\epsilon >0$ in polynomial time unless NP=ZPP and the algorithms we derive seem to be the first o(n) factor approximation algorithms known for all these problems.

Abstract:We give approximation algorithms for the edge expansion and sparsest cut with product demands problems on directed hypergraphs, which subsume previous graph models such as undirected hypergraphs and directed normal graphs. Using an SDP formulation adapted to directed hypergraphs, we apply the SDP primal-dual framework by Arora and Kale (JACM 2016) to design polynomial-time algorithms whose approximation ratios match those of algorithms previously designed for more restricted graph models. Moreover, we have deconstructed their framework and simplified the notation to give a much cleaner presentation of the algorithms.

Abstract:Minimizing a sum of simple submodular functions of limited support is a special case of general submodular function minimization that has seen numerous applications in machine learning. We develop fast techniques for instances where components in the sum are cardinality-based, meaning they depend only on the size of the input set. This variant is one of the most widely applied in practice, encompassing, e.g., common energy functions arising in image segmentation and recent generalized hypergraph cut functions. We develop the first approximation algorithms for this problem, where the approximations can be quickly computed via reduction to a sparse graph cut problem, with graph sparsity controlled by the desired approximation factor. Our method relies on a new connection between sparse graph reduction techniques and piecewise linear approximations to concave functions. Our sparse reduction technique leads to significant improvements in theoretical runtimes, as well as substantial practical gains in problems ranging from benchmark image segmentation tasks to hypergraph clustering problems.
