Our results generalize the work of Wang and Xia for bounded domains in the hyperbolic space (Xia and Wang in Math Ann 385(1–2):863–879, 2023), and Szegö–Weinberger inequalities in rank-1 symmetric spaces obtained by Aithal and Santhanam (Trans Am Math Soc 348(10):3955–3965, 1996).

Abstract:We first investigate the lower bound for higher eigenvalues λ _i of the Laplace operator on a bounded domain and obtain a sharp lower bound. Then, we extent this estimate of the eigenvalues to general cases. Finally, we study the eigenvalues Γ _i for the clamped plate problem and deliver a sharp bound for the clamped plate problem for arbitrary dimension.

Abstract:In this paper, by mainly using the rearrangement technique and suitably constructing trial functions, under the constraint of fixed weighted volume, we can successfully obtain several isoperimetric inequalities for the first and the second Dirichlet eigenvalues, the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue of the Witten-Laplacian on bounded domains in space forms. These spectral isoperimetric inequalities extend those classical ones (i.e. the Faber-Krahn inequality, the Hong-Krahn-Szegő inequality and the Szegő-Weinberger inequality) of the Laplacian.

Abstract:We verify that if M is a compact minimal submanifold with boundary in a Cartan–Hadamard manifold N, then $$\sum \nolimits _{i=1}^{k}\lambda _i\ge \frac{2n\pi }{e}k^{\frac{n+2}{n}}{{\,\mathrm{vol}\,}}(M)^{-\frac{2}{n}}$$, where $$\lambda _i$$ is the ith Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian on M. This provides an evidence for that the generalized Pólya conjecture is true. We also prove that if M is a complete and non-compact minimal submanifold in a Cartan–Hadamard manifold N, then $$\gamma _n N_\alpha (V)\le \int _M(V-\alpha )_{-}^{n/2}(x)dx$$, where $$N_\alpha (V)$$ is the number of eigenvalues($$\le \alpha $$) of the Schrödinger operator $$-\Delta +V$$ on M and $$\gamma _n$$ is an explicit positive constant depending only on n.

Abstract:We prove Li-Yau-Kröger-type bounds for Neumann-type eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator on bounded domains in a Euclidean space. We also prove sharp estimates for lower order eigenvalues of a biharmonic Steklov problem and of the Laplacian, which directly implies two sharp Reilly-type inequalities for the corresponding first nonzero eigenvalue.

Abstract:In this paper, by imposing suitable assumptions on the weighted function, (under the constraint of fixed weighted volume) a Brock-type isoperimetric inequality for Steklov-type eigenvalues of the Witten-Laplacian on bounded domains in a Euclidean space or a hyperbolic space has been proven. This conclusion is actually an interesting extension of F. Brock's classical result about the isoperimetric inequality for Steklov eigenvalues of the Laplacian given in the influential paper [Z. Angew. Math. Mech. 81 (2001) 69-71]. Besides, a related open problem has also been proposed in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish several new Lyapunov-type inequalities for two classes of one-dimensional quasilinear elliptic systems of resonant type, which generalize or improve all related existing ones. Abstract:For smooth bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}$, we prove upper and lower $L^2$ bounds on the boundary data of Neumann eigenfunctions, and prove quasi-orthogonality of this boundary data in a spectral window. The bounds are tight in the sense that both are independent of eigenvalue; this is achieved by working with an appropriate norm for boundary functions, which includes a `spectral weight', that is, a function of the boundary Laplacian. This spectral weight is chosen to cancel concentration at the boundary that can happen for `whispering gallery' type eigenfunctions. These bounds are closely related to wave equation estimates due to Tataru. Using this, we bound the distance from an arbitrary Helmholtz parameter $E>0$ to the nearest Neumann eigenvalue, in terms of boundary normal-derivative data of a trial function $u$ solving the Helmholtz equation $(\Delta-E)u=0$. This `inclusion bound' improves over previously known bounds by a factor of $E^{5/6}$. It is analogous to a recently improved inclusion bound in the Dirichlet case, due to the first two authors. Finally, we apply our theory to present an improved numerical implementation of the method of particular solutions for computation of Neumann eigenpairs on smooth planar domains. We show that the new inclusion bound improves the relative accuracy in a computed Neumann eigenvalue (around the $42000$th) from 9 digits to 14 digits, with little extra effort.

Abstract:We generalize a classical inequality between the eigenvalues of the Laplacians with Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded, planar domains: in 1955, Payne proved that below the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian there exist at least $k + 2$ eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian, provided the domain is convex. It has, however, been conjectured that this should hold for any domain. Here we show that the statement indeed remains true for all simply connected planar Lipschitz domains. The proof relies on a novel variational principle.

Abstract:} In this article, we put forward a Neumann eigenvalue problem for the bi-harmonic operator $\Delta^2$ on a bounded smooth domain $\Om$ in the Euclidean $n$-space ${\bf R}^n$ ($n\ge2$) and then prove that the corresponding first non-zero eigenvalue $\Upsilon_1(\Om)$ admits the isoperimetric inequality of Szeg\"o-Weinberger type: $\Upsilon_1(\Om)\le \Upsilon_1(B_{\Om})$, where $B_{\Om}$ is a ball in ${\bf R}^n$ with the same volume of $\Om$. The isoperimetric inequality of Szeg\"o-Weinberger type for the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue of the even-multi-Laplacian operators $\Delta^{2m}$ ($m\ge1$) on $\Om$ is also exploited.

Abstract:About ten years ago, Schmuckenschläger proved that the lowest eigenvalue of Dirichlet Laplacian for the intersection of two balls (i.e., convex, symmetric and compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with non-empty interior) is less than the sum of the lowest eigenvalue for each. His arguments rely on Kac's formula, the log-concavity of Gaussian measures, the symmetry of balls and Lieb's classical result for the intersection of two domains. In this note we revisit Schmuckenschläger's proof and propose a direct and elementary Lieb-free approach to these inequalities.

Abstract:Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a bounded domain and let $\lambda_1, \lambda_2, \dots$ denote the sequence of eigenvalues of the Laplacian subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider inequalities for $\lambda_n$ that are independent of the domain $\Omega$. A well--known such inequality follows from the Berezin--Li--Yau approach. The purpose of this paper is to point out a certain degree of flexibility in the Li--Yau approach. We use it to prove a new type of two-point inequality which are strictly stronger than what is implied by Berezin-Li-Yau itself. For example, when $d=2$, one has $ 2 \lambda_n + \lambda_{2n} \geq 10 \pi n/|\Omega|.$
