Abstract:Complete non-ambiguous trees (CNATs) are combinatorial objects which appear in various contexts. Recently, Chen and Ohlig studied the notion of leaf permutation on these objects, and proposed a series of nice conjectures. Most of them were proved by Selig and Zhu, through a connexion with the abelian sandpile model. But one conjecture remained open, about the distribution of a natural statistic named determinant. We prove this conjecture, in a bijective way.

Abstract:We study three combinatorial models for the lower-triangular matrix with entries $t_{n,k} = \binom{n}{k} n^{n-k}$: two involving rooted trees on the vertex set $[n+1]$, and one involving partial functional digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$. We show that this matrix is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. We then generalize to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,z)$ that count improper and proper edges, and further to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,\mathbf{\phi})$ in infinitely many indeterminates that give a weight $y$ to each improper edge and a weight $m! \, \phi_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $\mathbf{\phi}$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

Abstract:It is well-known that when a positively expansive dynamical system is invertible then its underlying space is finite. <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://C.Morales" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> has introduced a decade ago a natural way to generalize positive expansiveness, by introducing other properties that he called positive $n$-expansiveness, for all $n \ge 1$, positive $1$-expansiveness being identical to positive expansiveness. Contrary to positive expansiveness, positive $n$-expansiveness for $n>1$ does not enforce that the space is finite when the system is invertible. In the present paper we call finitely positively expansive dynamical systems as the ones which are positively $n$-expansive for some integer $n$, and prove several results on this class of systems. In particular, the well-known result quoted above is true if we add the constraint of shadowing property, while it is not if this property is replaced with minimality. Furthermore, finitely positively expansive systems cannot occur on certain topological spaces such as the interval, when the system is assumed to be invertible finite positive expansiveness implies zero topological entropy. Overall we show that the class of finitely positively expansive dynamical systems is quite rich and leave several questions open for further research.

On Positive Solutions of a Delay Equation Arising When Trading in Financial Markets

Abstract:We consider a discrete-time, linear state equation with delay which arises as a model for a trader's account value when buying and selling a risky asset in a financial market. The state equation includes a nonnegative feedback gain $\alpha$ and a sequence $v(k)$ which models asset returns which are within known bounds but otherwise arbitrary. We introduce two thresholds, $\alpha_-$ and $\alpha_+$, depending on these bounds, and prove that for $\alpha < \alpha_-$, state positivity is guaranteed for all time and all asset-return sequences; i.e., bankruptcy is ruled out and positive solutions of the state equation are continuable indefinitely. On the other hand, for $\alpha > \alpha_+$, we show that there is always a sequence of asset returns for which the state fails to be positive for all time; i.e., along this sequence, bankruptcy is certain and the solution of the state equation ceases to be meaningful after some finite time. Finally, this paper also includes a conjecture which says that for the "gap" interval $\alpha_- \leq \alpha \leq \alpha_+,$ state positivity is also guaranteed for all time. Support for the conjecture, both theoretical and computational, is provided.

Abstract:We give a transparent algebraic formulation of our pictorial approach to the reflection positivity (RP), that we introduced in a previous paper. We apply this quantization to the 2+1 Levin–Wen model to obtain 1+1 anyonic/quantum spin chain theory on the boundary, possibly entangled in the bulk. The reflection positivity property has played a central role in both mathematics and physics, as well as providing a crucial link between the two subjects. In a previous paper we gave a new geometric approach to understanding reflection positivity in terms of pictures. Here we give a transparent algebraic formulation of our pictorial approach. We use insights from this translation to establish the reflection positivity property for the fashionable Levin–Wen models with respect both to vacuum and to bulk excitations. We believe these methods will be useful for understanding a variety of other problems.
Positivity Bounds in Scalar Effective Field Theories at One-loop Level

Abstract:Parameters in an effective field theory can be subject to certain positivity bounds if one requires a UV completion that obeys the fundamental principles of quantum field theory. These bounds are relatively straight forward at the tree level, but would become more obscure when loop effects are important. Using scalar theories as examples, we carefully exam the positivity bounds in a case where the leading contribution to a forward elastic amplitude arises at the one-loop level, and point out certain subtleties in terms of the implications of positivity bounds on the theory parameter space. In particular, the one-loop generated dimension-8 operator coefficients (that would be positive if generated at the tree level), as well as their $\beta$-functions are generally not subject to positivity bounds as they might correspond to interference terms of the cross sections under the optical theorem, which could have either sign. A strict positivity bound can only be implied when all contributions at the same loop order are considered, including the ones from dim-4 and dim-6 operator coefficients, which have important effects at the one-loop level. Our results may have important implications on the robustness of experimental tests of positivity bounds.

On the stability and shadowing of tree-shifts of finite type

Abstract:We investigate relations between the pseudo-orbit-tracing property, topological stability and openness for tree-shifts. We prove that a tree-shift is of finite type if and only if it has the pseudo-orbit-tracing property which implies that the tree-shift is topologically stable and all shift maps are open. We also present an example of a tree-shift for which all shift maps are open but which is not of finite type. It also turns out, that if a topologically stable tree-shift does not have isolated points then it is of finite type.

Abstract:In order to determine the extinction probability of a Markovian binary tree, it is necessary to find the minimal nonnegative solution of a quadratic vector equation. We apply the modified Newton–Shamanskii method for solving the equation. We show that the sequence of vectors generated by the modified Newton–Shamanskii method is monotonically increasing and converges to the minimal nonnegative solution of the equation. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness of our method.
Ergodic theorem for branching Markov chains indexed by trees with arbitrary shape

Abstract:We prove an ergodic theorem for Markov chains indexed by the Ulam-Harris-Neveu tree over large subsets with arbitrary shape under two assumptions: with high probability, two vertices in the large subset are far from each other and have their common ancestor close to the root. The assumption on the common ancestor can be replaced by some regularity assumption on the Markov transition kernel. We verify that those assumptions are satisfied for some usual trees. Finally, with Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo considerations in mind, we prove when the underlying Markov chain is stationary and reversible that the Markov chain, that is the line graph, yields minimal variance for the empirical average estimator among trees with a given number of nodes.

Abstract:This paper investigates a series of optimization problems for one-counter Markov decision processes (MDPs) and integer-weighted MDPs with finite state space. Specifically, it considers problems addressing termination probabilities and expected termination times for one-counter MDPs, as well as satisfaction probabilities of energy objectives, conditional and partial expectations, satisfaction probabilities of constraints on the total accumulated weight, the computation of quantiles for the accumulated weight, and the conditional value-at-risk for accumulated weights for integer-weighted MDPs. Although algorithmic results are available for some special instances, the decidability status of the decision versions of these problems is unknown in general. The paper demonstrates that these optimization problems are inherently mathematically difficult by providing polynomial-time reductions from the Positivity problem for linear recurrence sequences. This problem is a well-known number-theoretic problem whose decidability status has been open for decades and it is known that decidability of the Positivity problem would have far-reaching consequences in analytic number theory. So, the reductions presented in the paper show that an algorithmic solution to any of the investigated problems is not possible without a major breakthrough in analytic number theory. The reductions rely on the construction of MDP-gadgets that encode the initial values and linear recurrence relations of linear recurrence sequences. These gadgets can flexibly be adjusted to prove the various Positivity-hardness results.

Around the positive graph conjecture

Abstract:A graph $H$ is said to be positive if the homomorphism density $t_H(G)$ is non-negative for all weighted graphs $G$. The positive graph conjecture proposes a characterisation of such graphs, saying that a graph is positive if and only if it is symmetric, in the sense that it is formed by gluing two copies of some subgraph along an independent set. We prove several results relating to this conjecture. First, we make progress towards the conjecture itself by showing that any connected positive graph must have a vertex of even degree. We then make use of this result to identify some new counterexamples to the analogue of Sidorenko's conjecture for hypergraphs. In particular, we show that, for $r$ odd, every $r$-uniform tight cycle is a counterexample, generalising a recent result of Conlon, Lee and Sidorenko that dealt with the case $r=3$. Finally, we relate the positive graph conjecture to the emerging study of graph codes by showing that any positive graph has vanishing graph code density, thereby improving a result of Alon who proved the same result for symmetric graphs. Our proofs make use of a variety of tools and techniques, including the properties of independence polynomials, hypergraph quasirandomness and discrete Fourier analysis.

Umbel convexity and the geometry of trees

Abstract:For every p ∈ ( 0 , ∞ ) , a new metric invariant called umbel p-convexity is introduced. The asymptotic notion of umbel convexity captures the geometry of countably branching trees, much in the same way as Markov convexity, the local invariant which inspired it, captures the geometry of bounded degree trees. Umbel convexity is used to provide a “Poincaré-type” metric characterization of the class of Banach spaces that admit an equivalent norm with Rolewicz's property (β). We explain how a relaxation of umbel p-convexity, called infrasup-umbel p-convexity, plays a role in obtaining compression rate bounds for coarse embeddings of countably branching trees. Local analogues of these invariants - fork p-convexity and infrasup-fork p-convexity - are introduced, and their relationship to Markov p-convexity and relaxations of the p-fork inequality is discussed. The metric invariants are estimated for a large class of Heisenberg groups, and in particular a parallelogram p-convexity inequality is proved for Heisenberg groups over p-uniformly convex Banach spaces. Finally, a new characterization of non-negative curvature is given.

Abstract:A simple condition is given that is sufficient to determine whether a measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to a Gaußian measure on the space of distributions is reflection positive. It readily generalises conventional lattice results to an abstract setting, enabling the construction of many reflection positive measures that are not supported on lattices.

Abstract:In this article we consider several probabilistic processes defining random grapha. One of these processes appeared recently in connection with a factorization problem in the symmetric group. For each of the probabilistic processes, we prove that the probability for the random graph to be a tree has an extremely simple expression, which is independent of most parameters of the problem. This raises many open questions.

Positivity properties of scattering amplitudes

Abstract:We investigate positivity properties in quantum field theory (QFT). We find that planar Feynman integrals in QFT, as well as many related quantities, satisfy an infinite number of positivity conditions: the functions, as well as all their signed derivatives, are non-negative in a specified kinematic region. Such functions are known as completely monotonic (CM) in the mathematics literature. A powerful way to certify complete monotonicity is via integral representations. We thus show that it applies to non-planar integrals possessing a Euclidean region, to cosmological correlators, as well as to certain stringy integrals. Motivated by Positive Geometry, we investigate positivity properties in planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We present evidence, based on known analytic multi-loop results, that the CM property extends to several physical quantities in this theory. This includes the (suitably normalized) finite remainder function of the six-particle maximally-helicity violating (MHV) amplitude, four-point scattering amplitudes on the Coulomb branch, four-point correlation functions, as well as the angle-dependent cusp anomalous dimension. Our findings are however not limited to supersymmetric theories. It is shown that the CM property holds for the QCD and QED cusp anomalous dimensions, to three and four loops, respectively. We comment on open questions, and on possible numerical applications of complete monotonicity.

Abstract:We establish reflection positivity for Gibbs trace states defined by a certain class of Hamiltonians that describe the interaction of Majoranas on a lattice. These Hamiltonians may include many-body interactions, as long as the signs of the associated coupling constants satisfy certain restrictions. We show that reflection positivity holds on an even subalgebra of Majoranas.
