Abstract:We derive interior curvature bounds for admissible solutions of a class of curvature equations subject to affine Dirichlet data, generalizing a well-known estimate of Pogorelov for equations of Monge-Ampere type. For equations for which convexity of the solution is the natural ellipticity assumption, the curvature bound is proved for solutions with C-1,C-1 Dirichlet data. We also use the curvature bounds to improve and extend various existence results for the Dirichlet and Plateau problems.

Abstract:We consider the optimization problem $(P_{A})$ $\inf_{x\in X}\{f(x)+g(Ax)\}$ where $f$ and $g$ are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and $A$ is a linear operator from $X$ to $Y$. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugated functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality and the strong converse Fenchel duality of $(P_{A})$ are provided. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the stable Fenchel duality and for the total Fenchel duality are also derived.

Abstract:Using the convex process theory we study the convergence issues of the iterative sequences generated by the Gauss–Newton method for the convex inclusion problem defined by a cone C and a smooth function F (the derivative is denoted by F′). The restriction in our consideration is minimal and, even in the classical case (the initial point x0 is assumed to satisfy the following two conditions: F′ is Lipschitz around x0 and the convex process Tx0, defined by Tx0⋅=F′(x0)⋅−C, is surjective), our results are new in giving sufficient conditions (which are weaker than the known ones and have a remarkable property being affine-invariant) ensuring the convergence of the iterative sequence with initial point x0. The same study is also made for the so-called convex-composite optimization problem (with objective function given as the composite of a convex function with a smooth map).

Abstract:In this work, we study the asymptotic behavior of the free boundary of the solution to the exterior Bernoulli problem for the half Laplacian when the Bernoulli's gradient parameter tends to $0^+$ and to $+\infty$. Moreover, we show that, under suitable conditions, the perpendicular rays of the free boundary always meets the convex envelope of the fixed boundary.

Abstract:The present article is dedicated to proving convergence of the stochastic gradient method in case of random shape optimization problems. To that end, we consider Bernoulli's exterior free boundary problem with a random interior boundary. We recast this problem into a shape optimization problem by means of the minimization of the expected Dirichlet energy. By restricting ourselves to the class of convex, sufficiently smooth domains of bounded curvature, the shape optimization problem becomes strongly convex with respect to an appropriate norm. Since this norm is weaker than the differentiability norm, we are confronted with the so-called two-norm discrepancy, a well-known phenomenon from optimal control. We therefore need to adapt the convergence theory of the stochastic gradient method to this specific setting correspondingly. The theoretical findings are supported and validated by numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper proves comparison principles for elliptic PDE involving the Finsler infinity Laplacian, a second-order differential operator with discontinuities in the gradient variable arising in $L^{\infty}$-variational problems and tug-of-war games. The core of the paper consists in proving generalized cone comparison principles. Among other consequences, these results imply that, for any Finsler norm $\varphi$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, a function $u$ is a $\varphi$-absolutely minimizing Lipschitz extension if and only if it is a viscosity solution of the $\varphi$-infinity Laplace equation, settling a longstanding question in the $L^{\infty}$-calculus of variations. The proofs combine new geometric constructions with classical notions from convex analysis.

Abstract:We present a new duality theory for non-convex variational problems, under possibly mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The dual problem reads nicely as a linear programming problem, and our main result states that there is no duality gap. Further, we provide necessary and sufficient optimality conditions, and we show that our duality principle can be reformulated as a min–max result which is quite useful for numerical implementations. As an example, we illustrate the application of our method to a celebrated free boundary problem. The results were announced in Bouchitté and Fragalà (C R Math Acad Sci Paris 353(4):375–379, 2015).

Abstract:We study the regularity and comparison principle for a gradient degenerate Neumann problem. The problem is a generalization of the Signorini or thin obstacle problem which appears in the study of certain singular anisotropic free boundary problems arising from homogenization. In scaling terms, the problem is critical since the gradient degeneracy and the Neumann PDE operator are of the same order. We show the (optimal) $C^{1,\frac{1}{2}}$ regularity in dimension $d=2$ and we show the same regularity result in $d\geq 3$ conditional on the assumption that the degenerate values of the solution do not accumulate. We also prove a comparison principle characterizing minimal supersolutions, which we believe will have applications to homogenization and other related scaling limits.

Abstract:We study the exact effect of the anisotropic convexity of domains on the boundary estimate for two Monge-Ampère Equations: one is singular which is from the proper affine hyperspheres with constant mean curvature; the other is degenerate which is from the Monge-Ampère eigenvalue problem. As a result, we obtain the sharp boundary boundary estimates and the optimal global Hölder regularity for the two equations.

Abstract: Simplicial, piecewise-flat discretizations of manifolds provide a clear path towards curvature analysis on discrete geometries and for solutions of PDE's on manifolds of complex topologies. In this manuscript we review and expand on discrete exterior calculus methods using hybrid domains. We then analyze the geometric structure of curvature operators in a piecewise-flat lattice.

Abstract:We prove a strong form of the comparison principle for the elliptic Monge-Ampere equation, with a Dirichlet boundary condition interpreted in the viscosity sense. This comparison principle is valid when the equation admits a Lipschitz continuous weak solution. The result is tight, as demonstrated by examples in which the strong comparison principle fails in the absence of Lipschitz continuity. This form of comparison principle closes a significant gap in the convergence analysis of many existing numerical methods for the Monge-Ampere equation. An important corollary is that any consistent, monotone, stable approximation of the Dirichlet problem for the Monge-Ampere equation will converge to the viscosity solution.

Abstract:The faces of a convex set owe their relevance to an interplay between convexity and topology that is systematically studied in the work of Rockafellar. Infinite-dimensional convex sets are excluded from this theory as their relative interiors may be empty. Shirokov and the present author answered this issue by proving that every point in a convex set lies in the relative algebraic interior of the face it generates. This theorem is proved here in a simpler way, connecting ideas scattered throughout the literature. This article summarizes and develops methods for faces and their relative algebraic interiors and applies them to spaces of probability measures.

Abstract:Convexity and weak closeness of the set of Phi-superharmonic functions in a bounded Lipschitz domain in R-n is considered. By using the fact of that Phi-superharmonic functions are just the solutions to an obstacle problem and establishing some special properties of the obstacle problem, it is shown that if 0 satisfies Delta(2)-condition, then the set is not convex unless Phi(r) = Cr-2 or n = 1. Nevertheless, it is found that the set is still weakly closed in the corresponding Orlicz-Sobolev space.

Abstract:We provide a new approach to studying the Dirichlet-Neumann map for Laplace's equation on a convex polygon using Fokas' unified method for boundary value problems. By exploiting the complex analytic structure inherent in the unified method, we provide new proofs of classical results using mainly complex analytic techniques. The analysis takes place in a Banach space of complex valued, analytic functions and the methodology is based on classical results from complex analysis. Our approach gives way to new numerical treatments of the underlying boundary value problem and the associated Dirichlet-Neumann map. Using these new results we provide a family of well-posed weak problems associated with the Dirichlet-Neumann map, and prove relevant coercivity estimates so that standard techniques can be applied.

Differentiable structure ensures that many of the basics of classical convex analysis extend naturally from Euclidean space to Riemannian manifolds. Without such structure, however, extensions are more challenging. Nonetheless, in Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded above (but possibly positive), we develop several basic building blocks. We define subgradients via projection and the normal cone, prove their existence, and relate them to the classical affine minorant property. Then, in what amounts to a simple calculus or duality result, we develop a necessary optimality condition for minimizing the sum of two convex functions.

Abstract:The present paper provides two necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to the exterior Dirichlet problem of the Monge-Ampère equation with prescribed asymptotic behavior at infinity. By an adapted smooth approximation argument, we prove that the problem is solvable if and only if the boundary value is semi-convex with respect to the inner boundary, which is our first proposed new concept. Along the lines of Perron's method for Laplace equation, we obtain the threshold for solvability in the asymptotic behavior at infinity of the solution, and remove the $C^2$ regularity assumptions on the boundary value and on the inner boundary which are required in the proofs of the corresponding existence theorems in the recent literatures.
