Abstract:A three-dimensional model of polydisperse reactive sedimentation is developed by means of a multilayer shallow water approach. The model consists of a variety of solid particles of different sizes and densities, and substrates diluted in water, which produce biochemical reactions while the sedimentation process occurs. Based on the Masliyah-Lockett-Bassoon settling velocity, compressibility of the sediment and viscosity of the mixture, the system of governing equations is composed by non-homogeneous transport equations, coupled to a momentum equation describing the mass-average velocity. Besides, the free-surface depicted by the total height of the fluid column is incorporated and fully determined through the multilayer approach. A finite volume numerical scheme on Cartesian grids is proposed to approximate the model equations. Numerical simulations of the denitrification process exemplify the performance of the numerical scheme and model under different scenarios and bottom topographies.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly discusses the application of a multi-layer shallow water model in the process of multi-dispersed reactive settling. In the study, a three-dimensional model was developed, which considers the suspension of solid particles of different sizes and densities in water and their biochemical reactions with solutes when sinking due to gravity. The coupling system of the non-uniform transport equation and momentum equation is established based on the sedimentation velocity of Masliyah-Lockett-Bassoon, compressibility of sediments, and viscosity of the mixture. The model also includes the height of the free surface, which is fully determined through the multilayer approach. To approximate the model equations, a finite volume numerical scheme is proposed in the paper, combining the HLL-type path-conservative numerical method and upwind flux approximation to handle substrates. The main objective of the paper is to extend the one-dimensional reactive settling model to a three-dimensional multi-dispersed case using multi-layer shallow water approach. Unlike the one-dimensional model that only requires the mass balance equation, the three-dimensional model needs to consider the momentum equation to include the viscous stress tensor of the mixture. Finally, the authors establish a three-dimensional multi-dispersed reactive settling model that couples convection-diffusion-reaction transport equations and fluid equations, and design a numerical scheme to approximate these equations. The performance of the model is demonstrated through numerical simulations of the denitrification process of activated sludge under different scenarios and bottom topographies.
