Abstract:Understanding the environmental impact of professional activities is becoming paramount in current times, especially within sectors that historically have had significant resource utilisation, such as High Energy Physics (HEP) and related fields. The young High Energy Physicists (yHEP) association launched the Know your footprint (Kyf) campaign to evaluate the CO$_\text{2}$-equivalent emissions generated by HEP-related research. This study delves into the carbon footprints associated with four distinct categories: Experiments, tied to extensive collaborations with substantial infrastructure; Institutional, representing the resource consumption of research institutes and universities; Computing, focusing on simulations and data analysis; and Travel, covering professional trips such as to conferences, meetings, and workshops. The findings in this assessment are integrated into a tool for self-evaluation, the Know-your-footprint (Kyf) calculator, which allows colleagues to assess their personal and professional footprint, and optionally share their data with the yHEP association. The aim of the Kyf campaign is to heighten awareness, foster sustainability, and inspire the community to adopt more environmentally-responsible research methodologies.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This article focuses on the issue of personal carbon footprint for researchers in high-energy physics and related fields. With increased awareness of environmental impact, especially in resource-intensive fields such as high-energy physics, understanding and quantifying the environmental impact of professional activities has become crucial. The Young High-Energy Physicists (yHEP) Association has launched a campaign called "Know Your Footprint" (Kyf) to assess the carbon dioxide equivalent emissions related to high-energy physics research. The study is divided into four categories: experiment, institution, computation, and travel. The experiment category includes emissions from large research infrastructures; the institution category represents resource consumption in research institutes and universities; the computation category focuses on emissions generated from simulations and data analysis; and the travel category covers emissions from professional trips such as conferences and workshops. These data are consolidated into a self-assessment tool called the Kyf calculator, which allows researchers to assess their personal and professional carbon footprint and selectively share data. The goal of the Kyf campaign is to raise awareness, promote sustainability, and encourage the community to adopt more environmentally friendly research practices. The paper provides a detailed description of the data sources and calculation methods used to calculate the carbon footprint of high-energy physics researchers, along with an example footprint. By quantifying current emissions, this research helps identify areas that require urgent action and suggests possible starting points for reducing carbon footprint.
