Abstract:We continue a study of the relations between two consequences of the Continuum Hypothesis discovered by Waclaw Sierpinski, concerning uniform continuity of continuous functions and uniform convergence of sequences of real-valued functions, defined on subsets of the real line of cardinality continuum.

Abstract:We consider a (finite or infinite) family of closed convex sets with nonempty intersection in a normed space. A property relating their epigraphs with their intersection's epigraph is studied, and its relations to other constraint qualifications (such as the linear regularity, the strong CHIP, and Jameson's ($G$)-property) are established. With suitable continuity assumption we show how this property can be ensured from the corresponding property of some of its finite subfamilies.

Abstract:Abstract Let be a subset of a Hilbert space. We prove that if is such that for all and all non‐negative that add up to one, then for any 1‐Lipschitz , with , there exists a 1‐Lipschitz extension of such that the uniform distance on between and is the same as the uniform distance on between and . Moreover, if either or is convex, we prove the converse: We show that a map that allows for a 1‐Lipschitz, uniform distance preserving extension of any 1‐Lipschitz map on a subset of also satisfies the above set of inequalities. We also prove a similar continuity result concerning extensions of monotone maps. Our results hold true also for maps taking values in infinite‐dimensional spaces.

Abstract:We provide answers to a question brought up by Erdős about the construction of Wetzel families in the absence of the continuum hypothesis - a Wetzel family is a family $\mathcal{F}$ of entire functions on the complex plane which pointwise assumes fewer than $\vert \mathcal{F} \vert$ values. To be more precise, we show that the existence of a Wetzel family is consistent with all possible values $\kappa$ of the continuum and, if $\kappa$ is regular, also with Martin's Axiom. In the particular case of $\kappa = \aleph_2$ this answers an open question asked by Kumar and Shelah. In the buildup to this result, we are also solving an open question of Zapletal on strongly almost disjoint functions. We also study a strongly related notion of sets exhibiting a universality property via mappings by entire functions and show that these consistently exist while the continuum equals $\aleph_2$.

Abstract:The equivalence of spectral convergence and Benjamini-Schramm convergence is extended from homogeneous spaces to spaces which are compact modulo isometry group. The equivalence is proven under the condition of a uniform discreteness property. It is open, which implications hold without this condition.

Abstract:We show that many spaces that look like the half~line~$\halfline=[0,\infty)$ have, under~$\CH$, a Čech-Stone-remainder that is homeomorphic to~$\Hstar$. We also show that $\CH$ is equivalent to the statement that all standard subcontinua of~$\Hstar$ are homeomorphic. The proofs use Model-theoretic tools like reduced products and elementary equivalence; rather than constructing homeomorphisms we show that the spaces in question have isomorphic bases for the closed sets.

Topology and its Applications

Abstract:The result of J. R. Kline and R. L. Moore (1919) says that a compact subset of the plane homeomorphic to a subset of the reals lies on the arc. Motivated by this result, we give a purely topological characterisation of compact sets of the reals. This allows us to reduce investigations of Cantorvals to properties of countable linear orders and to show, applying the Mazurkiewicz–Sierpiński Theorem (1920), that there exist continuum many non-homeomorphic L -Cantorvals.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 3, Page 2863-2914, June 2024. In this article, we derive conditions for the existence of solutions to state-constrained continuity inclusions in Wasserstein spaces whose right-hand sides may be discontinuous in time. These latter are based on a fine investigation of the infinitesimal behavior of the underlying reachable sets, through which we show that up to a negligible set of times, every admissible velocity of a continuity inclusion can be approximately realized as the metric derivative of a solution of the dynamics, and vice versa. Building upon these results, we are able to establish necessary and sufficient geometric conditions for the viability and invariance of stationary and time-dependent constraint sets which involve a suitable notion of contingent cones in Wasserstein spaces, and presented in ascending order of generality. We then close the article by exhibiting two prototypical examples of constraint sets appearing in applications for which one can compute relevant subfamilies of contingent directions.

Abstract:Since Kurt G(o|¨)del and Paul Cohen showed that the Continuum Hypothesis was independent to the axiomatic system of set theory ZFC,there was a lasting debate between Formalism and Platonism on the continuum problem.In this paper,we try to argue that recent progress about the CH made by Hugh Woodin is a great support to the point view of Platonism.On the other hand,we treat these progress as a work under the G(o|¨)del's Program,hence,as a philosophical point of view,Platonism is also a driving force for the more and more deeply understanding of the universe of sets.
Continuum polymer measures corresponding to the critical 2d stochastic heat flow

Abstract:We construct continuum directed polymer measures corresponding to the critical 2d stochastic heat flow (2d SHF) introduced by Caravenna, Sun, and Zygouras in their recent article [Inventiones mathematicae 233, 325--460 (2023)]. For this purpose, we prove a Chapman-Kolmogorov relation for the 2d SHF along with a related elementary conditional expectation formula. We explore some basic properties of the continuum polymer measures, with our main focus being on their second moments. In particular, we show that the form of their second moments is consistent with the family of continuum polymer measures, indexed by a disorder strength parameter, having a conditional Gaussian multiplicative chaos distributional interrelationship similar to that previously found in an analogous hierarchical toy model.

Was Ulam right? II: Small width and general ideals

Abstract:We continue our study of Sierpinski-type colourings. In contrast to the prequel paper, we focus here on colourings for ideals stratified by their completeness degree. In particular, improving upon Ulam's theorem and its extension by Hajnal, it is proved that if $\kappa$ is a regular uncountable cardinal that is not weakly compact in L, then there is a universal witness for non-weak-saturation of $\kappa$-complete ideals. Specifically, there are $\kappa$-many decompositions of $\kappa$ such that, for every $\kappa$-complete ideal $J$ over $\kappa$, and every $B\in J^+$, one of the decompositions shatters $B$ into $\kappa$-many $J^+$-sets. A second focus here is the feature of narrowness of colourings, one already present in the theorem of Sierpinski. This feature ensures that a colouring suitable for an ideal is also suitable for all superideals possessing the requisite completeness degree. It is proved that unlike successors of regulars, every successor of a singular cardinal admits such a narrow colouring.

Abstract:In [11], Mioduszewski characterized inverse sequences of polyhedra for which their inverse limits are homeomorphic. In this article, we obtain a more general characterization: we characterize inverse sequences of arbitrary compact metric spaces and continuous single-valued functions for which their inverse limits are homeomorphic. In our approach, set-valued functions are used instead of continuous single-valued functions in almost commutative diagrams. Using this characterization we give an alternative proof that the Brouwer-Janiszewski-Knaster continuum and the pseudo-arc are circle-like continua.

Abstract:Given a Polish group $G$, let $E(G)$ be the right coset equivalence relation $G^\omega/c(G)$, where $c(G)$ is the group of all convergent sequences in $G$. We first established two results: (1) Let $G,H$ be two Polish groups. If $H$ is TSI but $G$ is not, then $E(G)\not\le_BE(H)$. (2) Let $G$ be a Polish group. Then the following are equivalent: (a) $G$ is TSI non-archimedean; (b)$E(G)\leq_B E_0^\omega$; and (c) $E(G)\leq_B{\mathbb R}^\omega/c_0$. In particular, $E(G)\sim_B E_0^\omega$ iff $G$ is TSI uncountable non-archimedean. A critical theorem presented in this article is as follows: Let $G$ be a TSI Polish group, and let $H$ be a closed subgroup of the product of a sequence of TSI strongly NSS Polish groups. If $E(G)\le_BE(H)$, then there exists a continuous homomorphism $S:G_0\rightarrow H$ such that $\ker(S)$ is non-archimedean, where $G_0$ is the connected component of the identity of $G$. The converse holds if $G$ is connected, $S(G)$ is closed in $H$, and the interval $[0,1]$ can be embedded into $H$.

Abstract:We provide the following result and its discrete equivalent: Let $f \colon I^n \to \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ be a continuous function. Then, there exist a point $p \in \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ and a compact subset $S \subset f^{-1}\left[\left\{p\right\}\right]$ which connects some opposite faces of the $n$-dimensional unit cube $I^n$. We give an example that shows it cannot be generalized to path-connected sets. Additionally, we show that the $n$-dimensional Steinhaus Chessboard Theorem and the Brouwer Fixed Point Theorem are simple consequences of this result.

Abstract:We consider the minimization property of a Gagliardo-Slobodeckij seminorm which can be seen as the fractional counterpart of the classical problem of functions of least gradient and which is related to the minimization of the nonlocal perimeter functional. We discuss continuity properties for this kind of problem. In particular, we show that, under natural structural assumptions, the minimizers are bounded and continuous in the interior of the ambient domain (and, in fact, also continuous up to the boundary under some mild additional hypothesis). We show that these results are also essentially optimal, since in general the minimizer is not necessarily continuous across the boundary.
