Abstract:This PhD thesis elaborates on a problem raised by Schmidt in 1967. We study Diophantine exponents for subspaces, which generalize the irrationality measure for real numbers. We construct subspaces with prescribed exponents and demonstrate properties of algebraic independence among certain exponents.

Abstract:This paper uses W. M. Schmidt's idea formulated in 1967 to generalise the classical theory of Diophantine approximation to subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Given two subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^n$ $A$ and $B$ of respective dimensions $d$ and $e$ with $d+e\leqslant n$, the proximity between $A$ and $B$ is measured by $t=\min(d,e)$ canonical angles $0\leqslant \theta_1\leqslant \cdots\leqslant \theta_t\leqslant \pi/2$; we set $\psi_j(A,B)=\sin\theta_j$. If $B$ is a rational subspace, his complexity is measured by its height $H(B)=\mathrm{covol}(B\cap\mathbb{Z}^n)$. We denote by $\mu_n(A\vert e)_j$ the exponent of approximation defined as the upper bound (possibly equal to $+\infty$) of the set of $\beta>0$ such that for infinitely many rational subspaces $B$ of dimension $e$, the inequality $\psi_j(A,B)\leqslant H(B)^{-\beta}$ holds. We are interested in the minimal value $\mathring{\mu}_n(d\vert e)_j$ taken by $\mu_n(A\vert e)_j$ when $A$ ranges through the set of subspaces of dimension $d$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that for all rational subspaces $B$ of dimension $e$ one has $\dim(A\cap B)<j$. We show that if $A$ is included in a rational subspace $F$ of dimension $k$, its exponent in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is the same as its exponent in $\mathbb{R}^k$ via a rational isomorphism $F\to\mathbb{R}^k$. This allows us to deduce new upper bounds for $\mathring{\mu}_n(d\vert e)_j$. We also study the values taken by $\mu_n(A\vert e)_e$ when $A$ is a subspace of $\mathbb{R}^n$ satisfying $\dim(A\cap B)<e$ for all rational subspaces $B$ of dimension $e$.

Abstract:The Subspace Theorem due to Schmidt (1972) is a broad generalisation of Roth's Theorem in Diophantine Approximation (1955) which, in the same way as the latter, suffers a notorious lack of effectivity. This problem is tackled from a probabilistic standpoint by determining the proportion of algebraic linear forms of bounded heights and degrees for which there exists a solution to the Subspace Inequality lying in a subspace of large height. The estimates are established for a class of height functions emerging from an analytic parametrisation of the projective space. They are pertinent in the regime where the heights of the algebraic quantities are larger than those of the rational solutions to the inequality under consideration, and are valid for approximation functions more general than the power functions intervening in the original Subspace Theorem. These estimates are further refined in the case of Roth's Theorem so as to yield a Khintchin-type density version of the so-called Waldschmidt conjecture (which is known to fail pointwise). This answers a question raised by Beresnevich, Bernik and Dodson (2009).

Abstract:The parametric geometry of numbers of Schmidt and Summerer deals with rational approximation to points in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We extend this theory to a number field $K$ and its completion $K_w$ at a place $w$ in order to treat approximation over $K$ to points in $K_w^n$. As a consequence, we find that exponents of approximation over $\mathbb{Q}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ have the same spectrum as their generalizations over $K$ in $K_w^n$. When $w$ has relative degree one over a place $\ell$ of $\mathbb{Q}$, we further relate approximation over $K$ to a point $\boldsymbol{\xi}$ in $K_w^n$, to approximation over $\mathbb{Q}$ to a point $\Xi$ in $\mathbb{Q}_\ell^{nd}$, obtained by extension of scalars, where $d$ is the degree of $K$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. By combination with a result of Bel, this allows us to construct algebraic curves in $\mathbb{R}^{3d}$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, of degree $2d$, containing points that are very singular with respect to rational approximation.

Abstract:Let $\theta\in\mathbb{R}^d$. We associate three objects to each approximation $(p,q)\in \mathbb{Z}^d\times \mathbb{N}$ of $\theta$: the projection of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d+1}$ to the hyperplane of the first $d$ coordinates along the approximating vector $(p,q)$; the displacement vector $(p - q\theta)$; and the residue classes of the components of the $(d + 1)$-tuple $(p, q)$ modulo all primes. All of these have been studied in connection with Diophantine approximation problems. We consider the asymptotic distribution of all of these quantities, properly rescaled, as $(p, q)$ ranges over the best approximants and $\epsilon$-approximants of $\theta$, and describe limiting measures on the relevant spaces, which hold for Lebesgue a.e. $\theta$. We also consider a similar problem for vectors $\theta$ whose components, together with 1, span a totally real number field of degree $d+1$. Our technique involve recasting the problem as an equidistribution problem for a cross-section of a one-parameter flow on an adelic space, which is a fibration over the space of $(d + 1)$-dimensional lattices. Our results generalize results of many previous authors, to higher dimensions and to joint equidistribution.

We propose a model for studying Diophantine approximation in an arbitrary totally bounded metric space where the rationals are replaced with a countable hierarchy of "well‐spread" points, which we refer to as abstract rationals. We prove various Jarník–Besicovitch type dimension bounds and investigate their sharpness.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective algebraic variety over a number field $k$ and $P$ in $X(k)$. In 2007, the second author conjectured that, in a precise sense, if rational points on $X$ are dense enough, then the best rational approximations to $P$ must lie on a curve. We present a strategy for deducing a slightly weaker conjecture from Vojta's conjecture, and execute this strategy for the full conjecture for split surfaces.

Abstract:In the following we construct spaces of dimension $(n\pm \varepsilon)$ lying in the neighborhood of $\mathbb{Z}^n, \mathbb{Z}^n$ in the context of the $(n-\varepsilon)$-expansion. We provide means and criteria to deform the spaces of integer dimension into this neighborhood. We argue that the field theoretic models living on these deformed spaces are the continuation of the models defined on the corresponding integer valued spaces. Furthermore we perform the continuum limit of subgraphs of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ having non-integer dimension to the corresponding (fractal) subspaces of $\mathbb{Z}^n$. We make sense of a fractal volume measure like $d^{(n-\varepsilon)}x$.

Abstract:In Diophantine approximation, the notion of singular vectors was introduced by Khintchine in the 1920's. We study the set of singular vectors on an affine subspace of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Abstract:We establish a quantitative approximation formula of the Lyapunov exponent of a rational function of degree more than one over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ that is complete with respect to a non-trivial and possibly non-archimedean absolute value, in terms of the multipliers of periodic points of the rational function. This quantifies both our former convergence result over general fields and the one-dimensional version of Berteloot--Dupont--Molino's one over archimedean fields.

Abstract:We extend the parametric geometry of numbers (initiated by Schmidt and Summerer, and deepened by Roy) to Diophantine approximation for systems of $m$ linear forms in $n$ variables, and establish a new connection to the metric theory via a variational principle that computes fractal dimensions of a variety of sets of number-theoretic interest. The proof relies on two novel ingredients: a variant of Schmidt's game capable of computing the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of any set, and the notion of templates, which generalize Roy's rigid systems. In particular, we compute the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular systems of linear forms and show they are equal, resolving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss and Margulis, as well as a question of Bugeaud, Cheung and Chevallier. As a corollary of Dani's correspondence principle, the divergent trajectories of a one-parameter diagonal action on the space of unimodular lattices with exactly two Lyapunov exponents with opposite signs has equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions. Other applications include quantitative strengthenings of theorems due to Cheung and Moshchevitin, which originally resolved conjectures due to Starkov and Schmidt respectively; as well as dimension formulas with respect to the uniform exponent of irrationality for simultaneous and dual approximation in two dimensions, completing partial results due to Baker, Bugeaud, Cheung, Chevallier, Dodson, Laurent and Rynne.

Inhomogeneous Diophantine Approximation on $M_0$-sets

Abstract:We prove new quantitative Schmidt-type theorem for Diophantine approximations with restraint denominators on fractals (more precisely, on $M_0$-sets). Our theorems introduce a sharp balance condition between the growth rate of the sequence of denominators and the decay rate of the Fourier transform of a Rajchman measure. Among the other things, this allows applications to sequences of denominators of polynomial growth. In particular, we infer new inhomogeneous Khintchine-Järnik type theorems with restraint denominators for a broad family of denominator sequences. Furthermore, our results provide non-trivial lower bounds for Hausdorff dimensions of intersections of two sets of inhomogeneously well-approximable numbers with restraint denominators.

Abstract:We deduce Diophantine arithmetic inequalities for big linear systems and with respect to finite extensions of number fields. Our starting point is the Parametric Subspace Theorem, for linear forms, as formulated by Evertse and Ferretti \cite{Evertse:Ferretti:2013}. Among other features, this viewpoint allows for a partitioning of the linear scattering, for the Diophantine Exceptional set, that arises in the Subspace Theorem. Our perspective builds on our work \cite{Grieve:points:bounded:degree}, combined with earlier work of Evertse and Ferretti, \cite{Evertse:Ferretti:2013}, Evertse and Schlickewei, \cite{Evertse:Schlickewei:2002}, and others. As an application, we establish a novel linear scattering type result for the Diophantine exceptional set that arises in the main Diophantine arithmetic inequalities of Ru and Vojta \cite{Ru:Vojta:2016}. This result expands, refines and complements our earlier works (including \cite{Grieve:2018:autissier} and \cite{Grieve:points:bounded:degree}). A key tool to our approach is the concept of \emph{linear section} with respect to a linear system. This was defined in \cite{Grieve:points:bounded:degree}. Another point, which we develop in this article, is a notion of logarithmic \emph{twisted height functions} for local Weil functions and linear systems. As an additional observation, which is also of an independent interest, we use the theory of Iitaka fibrations to determine the asymptotic nature of such linear sections.

Abstract:We prove a Diophantine approximation inequality for closed subschemes on surfaces which can be viewed as a joint generalization of recent inequalities of Ru-Vojta and Heier-Levin in this context. As applications, we study various Diophantine problems on affine surfaces given as the complement of three numerically parallel ample projective curves: inequalities involving greatest common divisors, degeneracy of integral points, and related Diophantine equations including families of S-unit equations. We state analogous results in the complex analytic setting, where our main result is an inequality of Second Main Theorem type for surfaces, with applications to the study and value distribution theory of holomorphic curves in surfaces.

Inapproximability of Sparsest Vector in a Real Subspace

Abstract:We establish strong inapproximability for finding the sparsest nonzero vector in a real subspace. We show that it is NP-Hard (under randomized reductions) to approximate the sparsest vector in a subspace within any constant factor (or almost polynomial factors in quasipolynomial time). We recover as a corollary state of the art inapproximability for the shortest vector problem (SVP), a foundational problem in lattice based cryptography. Our proof is surprisingly simple, bypassing even the PCP theorem. We are inspired by the homogenization framework from the inapproximability theory of minimum distance problems (MDC) in integer lattices and error correcting codes. We use a combination of (a) \emph{product testing via tensor codes} and (b) \emph{encoding an assignment as a coset of a random code in higher dimensional space} in order to embed non-homogeneous quadratic equations into the sparsest vector problem. (a) is inspired by Austrin and Khot's simplified proof of hardness of MDC over finite fields, and (b) is inspired by Micciancio's semi-derandomization of hardness of SVP. Our reduction involves the challenge of performing (a) over the reals. We prove that tensoring of the kernel of a +1/-1 random matrix furnishes an adequate product test (while still allowing (b)). The proof exposes a connection to Littlewood-Offord theory and relies on a powerful anticoncentration result of Rudelson and Vershynin. Our main motivation in this work is the development of inapproximability theory for problems over the reals. Analytic variants of sparsest vector have connections to small set expansion, quantum separability and polynomial maximization over convex sets, all of which cause similar barriers to inapproximability. The approach we develop could lead to progress on the hardness of some of these problems.
