Abstract:In this paper, we study the critical metrics for quadratic curvature functionals involving the Ricci curvature and scalar curvature in the space of Riemannian metrics with unit volume. For these functionals, Einstein metrics are always critical metrics. However, a converse problem is not always true. Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider Cartan–Hadamard manifolds (i.e., simply connected, complete, of non-positive sectional curvature) whose negative Ricci curvature grows polynomially at infinity. We show that a number of functional properties, which typically hold on manifolds of bounded curvature, remain true in this setting. These include the characterization of Sobolev spaces on manifolds, the so-called Calderón–Zygmund inequalities and the -positivity preserving property, i.e., . The main tool is a new class of first- and second-order Hardy-type inequalities on Cartan–Hadamard manifolds with a polynomial upper bound on the curvature. In the last part of the manuscript we prove the -positivity preserving property, , on manifolds with subquadratic negative part of the Ricci curvature. This generalizes an idea of B. Güneysu and gives a new proof of a well-known condition for the stochastic completeness due to P. Hsu.

Failure of curvature-dimension conditions on sub-Riemannian manifolds via tangent isometries

Abstract:We prove that, on any sub-Riemannian manifold endowed with a positive smooth measure, the Bakry-Émery inequality for the corresponding sub-Laplacian implies the existence of enough Killing vector fields on the tangent cone to force the latter to be Euclidean at each point, yielding the failure of the curvature-dimension condition in full generality. Our approach does not apply to non-strictly-positive measures. In fact, we prove that the weighted Grushin plane does not satisfy any curvature-dimension condition, but, nevertheless, does admit an a.e. pointwise version of the Bakry-Émery inequality. As recently observed by Pan and Montgomery, one half of the weighted Grushin plane satisfies the RCD(0,N) condition, yielding a counterexample to gluing theorems in the RCD setting.

Abstract:In this note, we continue the investigation of a projective Kähler manifold M of semi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature H. We introduce a new differential geometric numerical rank invariant which measures the number of linearly independent truly flat directions of H in the tangent spaces. We prove that this invariant is bounded above by the nef dimension and bounded below by the numerical Kodaira dimension of M. We also prove a splitting theorem for M in terms of the nef dimension and, under some additional hypotheses, in terms of the new rank invariant.
On Kähler manifolds with non-negative mixed curvature

Abstract:In this work, we investigate compact Kähler manifolds with non-negative or quasi-positive mixed curvature coming from a linear combination of the Ricci and holomorphic sectional curvature, which covers various notions of curvature considered in the literature. Specifically, we prove a splitting theorem, analogous to the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem, for complete Kähler manifolds with non-negative mixed curvature containing a line, and then establish a structure theorem for compact Kähler manifolds with non-negative mixed curvature. We also show that the Hodge numbers of compact Kähler manifolds with quasi-positive mixed curvature must vanish. Both results are based on the conformal perturbation method.

Abstract:We apply the Riemannian Penrose inequality and the Riemannian positive mass theorem to derive inequalities on the boundary of a class of compact Riemannian 3-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature. The boundary of such a manifold has a CMC component, i.e., a 2-sphere with positive constant mean curvature; and the rest of the boundary, if nonempty, consists of closed minimal surfaces. A key step in our proof is the construction of a collar extension that is inspired by the method of Mantoulidis-Schoen.
New Rigidity Results for Critical Metrics of Some Quadratic Curvature Functionals

Abstract:We prove a new rigidity result for metrics defined on closed smooth $ n $-manifolds that are critical for the quadratic functional $ \mathfrak{F}_{t} $, which depends on the Ricci curvature $ Ric $ and the scalar curvature $ R $, and that satisfy a pinching condition of the form $ Sec > \epsilon R $, where $ \epsilon $ is a function of $ t $ and $ n $, while $ Sec $ denotes the sectional curvature. In particular, we show that Bach-flat metrics with constant scalar curvature satisfying $ Sec > \frac{1}{48} R $ are Einstein and, by a known result, are isometric to $ \mathbb{S}^{4} $, $ \mathbb{RP}^{4} $ or $ \mathbb{CP}^{2} $.

Abstract:We consider the moduli space of a class of critical metrics on compact manifolds that includes extremal Kähler metrics. We show that under the conditions of volume and diameter bounds, Ln2 curvature bounds, and Sobolev constant bounds, this Moduli space can be compactified by including orbifolds with finitely many orbifold points. In dimension >4 these orbifold points are C∞ Riemannian orbifold points, and in the 4 dimensional extremal Kähler case, they are also of class C∞.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that in a three-manifold with finitely many expansive ends, such that each end has a neighborhood where the curvature is bounded above by a negative constant, the Dirichlet problem at infinity is solvable, and hence that such manifolds posses a wealth of bounded non constant harmonic functions (and thus, Liouville's theorem does not hold). In the case of infinitely many expansive ends, we show that if each end has a neighborhood where the curvature is bounded above by a negative constant, then the Dirichlet problem at infinity is solvable for continuous boundary data at infinity which is uniformly bounded. Our method is based on a result that does not require explicit curvature assumptions, and hence it can be applied to other situations: we present an example of a metric on an end with curvature of indefinite sign (no matter how long we go along the end) for which the Dirichlet Problem at Infinity is solvable with respect to that end. We also present a related result in the case of surfaces with a pole which generalises a celebrated criteria of Milnor.

Abstract:A recent theorem of Diverio–Trapani and Wu–Yau asserts that a compact Kähler manifold with a Kähler metric of quasi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature is projective and canonically polarized. This confirms a long-standing conjecture of Yau. We consider the notion of –quasi-negativity, generalizing quasi-negativity, and obtain gap-type theorems for in terms of the real bisectional curvature and weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature. These theorems are also a generalization of that results by Zhang-Zheng (arXiv:2010.01314v4 ) and Chu-Lee-Tam (Trans Am Math Soc 375(11):7925–7944, 2022).

Abstract:We demonstrate that $n$-dimension closed Einstein manifolds, whose smallest eigenvalue of the curvature operator of the second kind of $\mathring{R}$ satisfies $\lambda_1 \ge -\theta(n) \bar\lambda$, are either flat or round spheres, where $\bar \lambda$ is the average of the eigenvalues of $\mathring{R}$, and $\theta(n)$ is defined as in equation (1.2). Our result improves a celebrated result (Theorem 1.1) concerning Einstein manifolds with nonnegative curvature operator of the second kind.

Abstract:In 2014, Gromov vaguely conjectured that a sequence of manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature should have a subsequence which converges in some weak sense to a limit space with some generalized notion of nonnegative scalar curvature. The conjecture has been made precise at an IAS Emerging Topics meeting: requiring that the sequence be three dimensional with uniform upper bounds on diameter and volume, and a positive uniform lower bound on MinA, which is the minimum area of a closed minimal surface in the manifold. Here we present a sequence of warped product manifolds with warped circles over standard spheres, that have circular fibres over the poles whose length diverges to infinity, that satisfy the hypotheses of this IAS conjecture. We prove this sequence converges in the W 1 , p sense for p < 2 to an extreme limit space that has nonnegative scalar curvature in the distributional sense as defined by Lee-LeFloch and that the total distributional scalar curvature converges. This paper only requires expertise in smooth Riemannian Geometry, smooth minimal surfaces, and Sobolev Spaces. In a second paper, requiring expertise in metric geometry, the first two authors prove intrinsic flat and Gromov–Hausdorff convergence of our sequence to this extreme limit space and investigate its geometric properties.

Abstract:We show that any real Kahler Euclidean submanifold f : M-2n --> R2n+p with either non-negative Ricci curvature or non-negative holomorphic sectional curvature has index of relative nullity greater than or equal to 2n - 2p. Moreover, if equality holds everywhere, then the submanifold must be a product of Euclidean hypersurfaces almost everywhere, and the splitting is global provided that M-2n is complete. In particular, we conclude that the only real Kahler submanifolds M-2n in R-3n that have either positive Ricci curvature or positive holomorphic sectional curvature are products of n orientable surfaces in R-3 with positive Gaussian curvature. Further applications of our main result are also given.
