Abstract:We prove a number of results to the general effect that, under obviously necessary numerical and determinant constraints, "most" morphisms between fixed bundles on a complex elliptic curve produce (co)kernels which can either be specified beforehand or else meet various rigidity constraints. Examples include: (a) for indecomposable $\mathcal{E}$ and $\mathcal{E'}$ with slopes and ranks increasing strictly in that order the space of monomorphisms whose cokernel is semistable and maximally rigid (i.e. has minimal-dimensional automorphism group) is open dense; (b) for indecomposable $\mathcal{K}$, $\mathcal{E}$ and stable $\mathcal{F}$ with slopes increasing strictly in that order and ranks and determinants satisfying the obvious additivity constraints the space of embeddings $\mathcal{K}\to \mathcal{E}$ whose cokernel is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}$ is open dense; (c) the obvious mirror images of these results; (d) generalizations weakening indecomposability to semistability + maximal rigidity; (e) various examples illustrating the necessity of the assorted assumptions.

Abstract:A conjecture of Voisin states that two points on a smooth projective complex variety whose algebra of holomorphic forms is generated in degree 2 are rationally equivalent to each other if and only if their difference lies in the third step of the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In this note, we formulate a generalization that allows for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles of higher degree, at the expense of looking deeper in the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In the first half, we provide evidence in support of this conjecture in the case of abelian varieties and projective hyper-Kähler manifolds. Notably, we give explicit criteria for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles on moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces, generalizing that of Marian-Zhao. In the second half, in an effort to explain our main conjecture, we formulate a second conjecture predicting when the diagonal of a smooth projective variety belongs to a subalgebra of the ring of correspondences generated in low degree.

On the prime ends extension of unclosed inverse mappings

Abstract:We consider mappings that distort the modulus of families of paths in the opposite direction in the manner of Poletsky's inequality. Here we study the case when the mappings are not closed, in particular, they do not preserve the boundary of the domain under the mapping. Under certain conditions, we obtain results on the continuous boundary extension of such mappings in the sense of prime ends. In addition, we obtain corresponding results on the equicontinuity of families of such mappings in terms of prime ends.

Abstract:We prove two theorems on the vanishing of Ext over commutative Noetherian local rings. Our first theorem shows that there are no Burch ideals which are rigid over non-regular local domains. Our second theorem reformulates a conjecture of Huneke-Wiegand in terms of the vanishing of Ext, and highlights its relation with the celebrated Auslander-Reiten conjecture. We also discuss several consequences of our results, for example, about the rigidity of the Frobenius endomorphism in prime characteristic p and a generalization of a result of Araya.

Abstract:We study $cd(M,N):=\sup\{j:H^j_{m}(M,N)\neq0\}$, and we prove the following over $AB$-rings: $cd(M,N)<\infty$ iff $cd(M, N)\leq2 dim R$. For locally free over the punctured spectrum, we present the better bound, namely $cd(M, N)<\infty$ iff $cd(M, N)\leq dim R,$ and show this is sharp for maximal Cohen-Macaulay, and prove that this detects freeness of $M$. We present some explicit examples to compute $cd(M, N)$. Now, suppose $R$ is only Cohen-Macaulay and of prime characteristic equipped with the Frobenius map $\varphi$. We show for some $n\gg 0$ that $cd(^{\varphi_n}R,M)<\infty$ iff $id_R(M)<\infty.$ This presents some criteria on regularity. Also, some vanishing results on $Ext^i_R(^{\varphi}R,-)$ are given, where $(-)\in\{R,^{\varphi}R\}$. We determine conditions under which the vanishing $Ext^i_R(^{\varphi}R,-)$ of restricted many $i$-th, implies the vanishing of all.

Abstract:Collisionless energy absorption in 1D nanoplasma layer is considered. Straightforward classical calculation of the absorption rate in action-angle variables is presented. In regular regime the result obtained is the same as in [Zaretsky <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>., 2004], but deeper insight is possible now due to the technique used. Chirikov criterion of the chaotic absorption regime is written out. Collisionless energy absorption rate in nanoplasma layer is calculated in stochastic regime.

Monodromy and vanishing cycles for complete intersection curves

Abstract:We compute the topological monodromy of every family of complete intersection curves. Like in the case of plane curves previously treated by the second-named author, we find the answer is given by the $r$-spin mapping class group associated to the maximal root of the adjoint line bundle. Our main innovation is a suite of tools for studying the monodromy of sections of a tensor product of very ample line bundles in terms of the monodromy of sections of the factors, allowing for an induction on (multi-)degree.

Abstract:According to Berezin and Faddeev, a Schrödinger operator with point interactions –Δ + is any self-adjoint extension of the restriction of the Laplace operator to the subset of the Sobolev space . The present paper studies the extensions (realizations) invariant under the symmetry group of the vertex set of a regular m -gon. Such realizations H B are parametrized by special circulant matrices . We describe all such realizations with non-trivial kernels. А Grinevich–Novikov conjecture on simplicity of the zero eigenvalue of the realization H B with a scalar matrix and an even m is proved. It is shown that for an odd m non-trivial kernels of all realizations H B with scalar are two-dimensional. Besides, for arbitrary realizations the estimate is proved, and all invariant realizations of the maximal dimension are described. One of them is the Krein realization, which is the minimal positive extension of the operator .

Abstract:We prove the following vanishing theorem. Let M be an irreducible symmetric space of noncompact type whose dimension exceeds 2 and M ≠ SO 0(2, 2)/SO(2) × SO(2). Let π: E → M be any vector bundle. Then any E-valued L 2 harmonic 1-form over M vanishes. In particular we get the vanishing theorem for harmonic maps from irreducible symmetric spaces of noncompact type.

Abstract:This is a short report on our new vanishing theorems for projective morphisms between complex analytic spaces. We established a complex analytic generalization of Kollár's torsion-freeness and vanishing theorem for analytic simple normal crossing pairs. Although our results may look artificial, they have already played a crucial role for the study of minimal models in the complex analytic setting.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a field and $E$ an extension of $F$ with $[E:F]=d$ where the characteristic of $F$ is zero or prime to $d$. We assume $\mu_{d^2}\subset F$ where $\mu_{d^2}$ are the $d^2$th roots of unity. This paper studies the problem of determining the cohomological kernel $H^n(E/F):=\ker(H^n(F,\mu_d) \rightarrow H^n(E,\mu_d))$ (Galois cohomology with coefficients in the $d$th roots of unity) when the Galois closure of $E$ is a semi-direct product of cyclic groups. The main result is a six-term exact sequence determining the kernel as the middle map and is based on tools of Positelski. When $n=2$ this kernel is the relative Brauer group ${\rm Br}(E/F)$, the classes of central simple algebras in the Brauer group of $F$ split in the field $E$. The work of Aravire and Jacob which calculated the groups $H^n_{p^m}(E/F)$ in the case of semidirect products of cyclic groups in characteristic $p$, provides motivation for this work.

Perverse sheaves on varieties with large fundamental groups

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.

Counterexamples to the Kotani-Last Conjecture for Continuum Schrödinger Operators via Character-Automorphic Hardy Spaces

Abstract:The Kotani-Last conjecture states that every ergodic operator in one space dimension with non-empty absolutely continuous spectrum must have almost periodic coefficients. This statement makes sense in a variety of settings; for example, discrete Schrödinger operators, Jacobi matrices, CMV matrices, and continuum Schrödinger operators. In the main body of this paper we show how to construct counterexamples to the Kotani-Last conjecture for continuum Schrödinger operators by adapting the approach developed by Volberg and Yuditskii to construct counterexamples to the Kotani-Last conjecture for Jacobi matrices. This approach relates the reflectionless operators associated with the prescribed spectrum to a family of character-automorphic Hardy spaces and then relates the shift action on the space of operators to the resulting action on the associated characters. The key to our approach is an explicit correspondence between the space of continuum reflectionless Schrödinger operators associated with a given set and the space of reflectionless Jacobi matrices associated with a derived set. Once this correspondence is established we can rely to a large extent on the previous work of Volberg and Yuditskii to produce the resulting action on the space of characters. We analyze this action and identify situations where we can observe absolute continuity without almost periodicity. In the appendix we show how to implement this strategy and obtain analogous results for extended CMV matrices.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring, and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$-module. In this paper, we present some results concerning to vanishing of $\operatorname{Ext}$ and finite injective dimension of $\operatorname{Hom}$. Additionally, we extend these results in terms of finite $C$-injective dimension of $\operatorname{Hom}$. We also investigate the consequences of some of these extensions in the case where $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $C$ is a canonical module for $R.$ Furthermore, we provide positive answers to the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ such that $\mathcal{I}_C\operatorname{-id}_R(\operatorname{Hom}_R(M,R))<\infty$ or $M \in \mathcal{A}_C(R)$ with $\mathcal{I}_C \operatorname{-id}_R(\operatorname{Hom}_R(M,M))<\infty$. Moreover, we derive a number of criteria for a semidualizing $R$-module $C$ to be a canonical module for $R$ in terms of the vanishing of $\operatorname{Ext}$ and the finite $C$-injective dimension of $\operatorname{Hom}$.

Abstract:Let $-\im\Lie_\T$ (essentially Lie derivative with respect to $\T$, a smooth nowhere zero real vector field) and $P$ be commuting differential operators, respectively of orders 1 and $m\geq 1$, the latter formally normal, both acting on sections of a vector bundle over a closed manifold. It is shown that if $P+(-i\Lie_\T)^m$ is elliptic then the restriction of $-\im\Lie_\T$ to $\Dom\subset \ker P\subset L^2$ yields a selfadjoint operator $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom:\Dom\subset\ker P\to \ker P$ with compact resolvent ($\Dom$ is specified carefully). It is also shown that, in the presence of an additional hypothesis on microlocal hypoellipticity of $P$, $-\im\Lie_\T|_\Dom$ is semi-bounded. These results are applied to CR manifolds on which $\T$ acts as an infinitesimal CR transformation which are then shown to yield versions of Kodaira's vanishing theorem.

Abstract:Given a bounded constructible complex of sheaves $\mathcal{F}$ on a complex Abelian variety, we prove an equality relating the cohomology jump loci of $\mathcal{F}$ and its singular support. As an application, we identify two subsets of the set of holomorphic 1-forms with zeros on a complex smooth projective irregular variety $X$; one from Green-Lazarsfeld's cohomology jump loci and one from the Kashiwara's estimates for singular supports. This result is related to Kotschick's conjecture about the equivalence between the existence of nowhere vanishing global holomorphic 1-forms and the existence of a fibre bundle structure over the circle. Our results give a conjecturally equivalent formulation using singular support, which is equivalent to a criterion involving cohomology jump loci proposed by Schreieder. As another application, we reprove a recent result proved by Schreieder and Yang; namely if $X$ has simple Albanese variety and admits a fibre bundle structure over the circle, then the Albanese morphism cohomologically behaves like a smooth morphism with respect to integer coefficients. In a related direction, we address the question whether the set of 1-forms that vanish somewhere is a finite union of linear subspaces of $H^0(X,\Omega_X^1)$. We show that this is indeed the case for forms admitting zero locus of codimension 1.
