Abstract:We prove the following sharp Sobolev inequality on the circle $$\int_{\mathbb{S}^1} [4(v')^2 - v^2] \mathrm{d} \theta \geq - \frac{4\pi^2}{\int_{\mathbb{S}^1} v^{-2} \mathrm{d} \theta},$$ with the equality being achieved when $v^{-2} (\theta) = \frac{k\sqrt{1-\alpha^2}}{1+ \alpha \cos(\theta - \theta_o)}$where$k>0$, $\alpha \in (-1,1)$, $\theta_0 \in \mathbb{R}$. If $v$ vanishes somewhere on the circle, then $$4 \int_{\mathbb{S}^1} (v')^2 \mathrm{d} \theta \geq\int_{\mathbb{S}^1} v^2 \mathrm{d} \theta.$$ The basic tools to prove the inequality are the rearrangement inequality on the circle and the variational method. We investigate the variational problem of the functional $\mathcal{F}[v] = \int_{\mathbb{S}^1} [4(v')^2 - v^2] \mathrm{d} \theta$ under the constraint $\int_{\mathbb{S}^1} v^{-2} \mathrm{d} \theta = 2\pi$. An important geometric insight of the functional $\mathcal{F}$ is that it is invariant under the Lorentz group, since $\mathcal{F}[v]$ is the integral of the product of two null expansions of a spacelike curve parameterised by the function $v^{-2}$ in a lightcone in $3$-dim Minkowski spacetime. The global minimiser of $\mathcal{F}$ under the constraint is simply given by the spacelike plane section of the lightcone. We introduce a method which combines the symmetric decreasing rearrangement and the Lorentz transformation. This method isnot confined to the scope of this paper, but is applicable to other Lorentz invariant variational problems on $\mathbb{S}^{n}, n \geq 1$. As an example, we sketch a proof of the sharp Sobolev inequality on $\mathbb{S}^n, n\geq 3$ by this method.

Abstract:We establish a sharp Sobolev trace inequality on the Siegel domain $\Omega_{n+1}$ involving the weighted norm-$W^{2,2}(\Omega_{n+1}, \rho^{1-2[\gamma]})$. The inequality is closely related the realization of fractional powers of the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group $H^n=\partial \Omega_{n+1}$ as generalized Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators associated to the weighted poly-sublaplacian, generalizing observations of Frank--González--Monticelli--Tan.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the sharp $k$-th order Sobolev inequalities in the hyperbolic space ${\H}^n$ for all $k=1,2,3,\cdots$. This gives an answer to an open question raised by Aubin in [5, p.$\;$176-177] for $W^{k,2}({\H}^n)$ with $k>1$. In addition, we prove that the associated Sobolev constants are optimal.

We prove there exists some $ B \in \mathbb{R} $ depending only on $ (M, g) $, $ m $, and $ n $ such that for all $ u \in H_m^2(M) $, $$ \lVert u \rVert_{2^\#}^2 \leq K(m,n) \int_M (\Delta^\frac{m}{2} u)^2 dv_g + B \lVert u \rVert_{H_{m-1}^2(M)}^2 $$ where $ 2^\# = \frac{2n}{n-2m} $, $ K(m,n) $ is the square of the best constant for the embedding $ W^{m,2}(\mathbb{R}^n) \subset L^{2^\#}(\mathbb{R}^n) $, $ H_m^2(M) $ is the Sobolev space consisting of functions on $ M $ with $ m $ weak derivatives in $ L^2(M) $, and $ \Delta^\frac{m}{2} = \nabla \Delta^{\frac{m-1}{2}} $ if $ m $ is odd. This inequality is sharp in the sense that $ K(m,n) $ cannot be lowered to any smaller constant. This extends the work of Hebey-Vaugon and Hebey which correspond respectively to the cases $ m=1 $ and $ m=2 $.

Conformally Covariant Boundary Operators and Sharp Higher Order CR Sobolev Trace Inequalities on the Siegel Domain and Complex Ball

Abstract:We first introduce an appropriate family of conformally covariant boundary operators associated to the Siegel domain ${\mathcal U}^{n+1}$ with the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ as its boundary and the complex ball $\mathbb{B}_{\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$ with the complex sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}$ as its boundary. We provide the explicit formulas of these conformally covariant boundary operators. Second, we establish all higher order extension theorems of Caffarelli-Silvestre type for the Siegel domain and complex ball. Third, we prove all higher order CR Sobolev trace inequalities for the Siegel domain ${\mathcal U}^{n+1}$ and the complex ball $\mathbb{B}_{\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$.In particular, we generalize the Sobolev trace inequalityfor $\gamma\in (0, 1)$ in the CR setting by Frank-González-Monticelli-Tan to the case for all $\gamma\in (0, n+1)\backslash \mathbb{N}$. The family of higher order conformally covariant boundary operators we define are naturally intrinsic to the higher order Sobolev trace inequalities on both the Siegel domain ${\mathcal U}^{n+1}$ and complex ball $\mathbb{B}_{\mathbb{C}^{n+1}}$. Finally, we give an explicit solution to the scattering problem on the complex hyperbolic ball. More precisely, we obtain an integral representation and an expansion in terms of special functions for the solution to the scattering problem.

Conformally Covariant Boundary Operators and Sharp Higher Order Sobolev Trace Inequalities on Poincaré-Einstein Manifolds

Abstract:In this paper we introduce conformally covariant boundary operators for Poincaré-Einstein manifolds satisfying a mild spectral assumption. Using these boundary operators we set up higher order Dirichlet problems whose solutions are such that, when applied to by our boundary operators, they recover the fractional order GJMS operators on the conformal infinity of the manifold. We moreover obtain all related higher order trace Sobolev inequalities on these manifolds. In conjunction with Beckner's fractional Sobolev inequalities on the sphere, we obtain as an application the sharp higher order Sobolev trace inequalities on the ball.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain new upper bounds for the Lieb-Thirring inequality on the spheres of any dimension greater than $2$. As far as we have checked, our results improve previous results found in the literature for all dimensions greater than $2$. We also prove and exhibit an explicit new upper bound for the Lieb-Thirring inequality on $SO(3)$. We also discuss these estimates in the case of general compact Lie groups. Originally developed for estimating the sums of moments of negative eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, these inequalities have applications in quantum mechanics and other fields.

Abstract:We prove a family of sharp multilinear integral inequalities on real spheres involving functions that possess some symmetries that can be described by annihilation by certain sets of vector fields. The Lebesgue exponents involved are seen to be related to the combinatorics of such sets of vector fields. Moreover we derive some Euclidean Brascamp--Lieb inequalities localized to a ball of radius $R$, with a blow-up factor of type $R^\delta$, where the exponent $\delta>0$ is related to the aforementioned Lebesgue exponents, and prove that in some cases $\delta$ is optimal.

Abstract:There are two Rellich inequalities for the bilaplacian, that is for $\int (\Delta u)^2dx$, the one involving $|\nabla u|$ and the other involving $|u|$ at the RHS. In this article we consider these inequalities with sharp constants and obtain sharp Sobolev-type improvements. More precisely, in our first result we improve the Rellich inequality with $|\nabla u|$ obtained recently by Cazacu in dimensions $n=3,4$ by a sharp Sobolev term thus complementing existing results for the case $n\geq 5$. In the second theorem the sharp constant of the Sobolev improvement for the Rellich inequality with $|u|$ is obtained.

Abstract:We establish a new family of the critical higher order Sobolev interpolation inequalities for radial functions as well as for non-radial functions. These Sobolev interpolation inequalities are sharp in the sense that they use the optimal quadratic forms of the sharp Hardy-Rellich inequalities and cover the Sobolev critical exponents. Our results extend those studied by Dietze and Nam in [15] for the first order derivative case to higher order setting. The well-known Pólya-Szegö symmetrization principle and the nonlinear ground state representation play an important role in the work of [15]. To overcome the absence of the Pólya-Szegö principle and the nonlinear ground state representation in the higher order case, our proofs rely on the Fourier analysis and a higher order verion of the Talenti comparison principle. We also study a new version of the critical Hardy-Sobolev interpolation inequality involving the critical quadratic form of the Hardy inequality and Lorentz norms. Our critical Hardy-Sobolev interpolation inequality complements the result of Dietze and Nam in [15].

Abstract:We establish a uniform Sobolev inequality for Kähler metrics, which only require an entropy bound and no lower bound on the Ricci curvature. We further extend our Sobolev inequality to singular Kähler metrics on Kähler spaces with normal singularities. This allows us to build a general theory of global geometric analysis on singular Kähler spaces including the spectral theorem, heat kernel estimates, eigenvalue estimates and diameter estimates. Such estimates were only known previously in very special cases such as Bergman metrics. As a consequence, we derive various geometric estimates, such as the diameter estimate and the Sobolev inequality, for Kähler-Einstein currents on projective varieties with definite or vanishing first Chern class.

Abstract:We determine the sharp constants for the fractional Sobolev inequalities associated with the conformally invariant fractional powers $\mathcal{L}_{s}(0<s<1)$ of the sublaplacian on H-type groups. From these inequalities we derive a sharp log-Sobolev inequality by considering a limiting case and a sharp Sobolev trace inequality. Abstract:One may define a trilinear convolution form on the sphere involving two functions on the sphere and a monotonic function on the interval $[-1,1]$. A symmetrization inequality of Baernstein and Taylor states that this form is maximized when the two functions on the sphere are replaced with their nondecreasing symmetric rearrangements. In the case of indicator functions, we show that under natural hypotheses, the symmetric rearrangements are the only maximizers up to symmetry by establishing a sharpened inequality.

Abstract:We consider the Euler-Lagrange equation of Sobolev trace inequality and prove several classification results. Exploiting the moving sphere method, it has been shown, when $p=2$, positive solutions of Euler-Lagrange equation of Sobolev trace inequality are classified. Since the moving sphere method strongly relies on the symmetries of the equation, in this paper we use asymptotic estimates and two important integral identities to classify positive solutions of Euler-Langrange equation of Sobolev trace inequality under finite energy when $1<p<n$.
