Abstract:We investigate the finite groups $G$ for which $\chi(1)^{2}=|G:Z(\chi)|$ for all characters $\chi \in Irr(G)$ and $|cd(G)|=2$. We obtain some alternate characterizations of these groups and we obtain some information regarding the structure of these groups.

Abstract:We investigate the finite groups $G$ for which $\chi(1)^{2}=|G:Z(\chi)|$ for all characters $\chi \in Irr(G)$ and $|cd(G)|=2$, where $cd(G)=\{\chi(1)| \chi \in Irr(G)\}$. We call such a group a GVZ-group with two character degrees. We establish bijections between the sets of characters of some groups obtained from a GVZ-group with two character degrees. Additionally we obtain some alternate characterizations of a GVZ-group with two character degrees and we construct a GVZ-group having the character degree set $\{1,p\}$.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:If $G$ be a finite $p$-group and $\chi$ is a non-linear irreducible character of $G$, then $\chi(1)\leq |G/Z(G)|^{\frac{1}{2}}$. In \cite{fernandez2001groups}, Fernández-Alcober and Moretó obtained the relation between the character degree set of a finite $p$-group $G$ and its normal subgroups depending on whether $|G/Z(G)|$ is a square or not. In this paper we investigate the finite $p$-group $G$ where for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ with $G'\not \leq N$ either $N\leq Z(G)$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$ and obtain some alternate characterizations of such groups. We find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n+1}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $N\leq Z(G)$, then $cd(G)=\{1, p^{n}\}$. We also find that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with nilpotency class not equal to $3$ and $|G/Z(G)|=p^{2n}$ and $G$ satisfies the condition that for any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ either $G'\not \leq N$ or $|NZ(G)/Z(G)|\leq p$, then $cd(G) \subseteq \{1, p^{n-1}, p^{n}\}$.

Groups with a Fixed Character Degree

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $d$ be the degree of an irreducible character of $G$ such that $|G|=d(d+e)$ for some $e>1$. Consider the case when $G$ is solvable, $d$ is square-free, and $(d,d+e)=1$. We wish to explore an equivalent condition on $G$ when $d\in\text{cd}(G)$. We show that if $d\in\text{cd}(G)$ then there is a sequence of congruences relating the prime power factors of $d+e$ to the product of prime factors of $d$ such that the product of the moduli in this sequence of congruences is $d$. Moreover, the argument will hold in both directions.

Abstract:A classical theorem on character degrees states that if a finite group has fewer than four character degrees, then the group is solvable. We prove a corresponding result on character values by showing that if a finite group has fewer than eight character values in its character table, then the group is solvable. This confirms a conjecture of T. Sakurai. We also classify non-solvable groups with exactly eight character values.

Abstract:Let $\chi$ be an irreducible character of a group $G.$ We denote the sum of the codegrees of the irreducible characters of $G$ by $S_c(G)=\sum_{\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)}{\rm cod}(\chi).$ We consider the question if $S_c(G)\leq S_c(C_n)$ is true for any finite group $G,$ where $n=|G|$ and $C_n$ is a cyclic group of order $n.$ We show this inequality holds for many classes of groups. In particular, we provide an affirmative answer for any finite group whose order is divisible by up to 99 primes. However, we show that the question does not hold true in all cases, by evidence of a counterexample.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined as the integer ${\rm cod}(\chi)=|G:\ker\chi|/\chi(1)$. It was conjectured by G. Qian in [13] that, for every element $g$ of $G$, there exists an irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$ such that ${\rm cod}(\chi)$ is a multiple of the order of $g$; the conjecture has been verified under the assumption that $G$ is solvable ([13]) or almost-simple ([11]). In this paper, we prove that Qian's conjecture is true for every finite group whose Fitting subgroup is trivial, and we show that the analysis of the full conjecture can be reduced to groups having a solvable socle.

Abstract:For a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined by $\textrm{cod}(\chi)=|G:\textrm{ker}(\chi)|/\chi(1)$, where $\textrm{ker}(\chi)$ is the kernel of $\chi$. In this paper, we show that if $H$ is a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type or a projective special linear group and $G$ is any finite group such that the character codegree sets of $G$ and $H$ coincide, then $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group, let Irr ( G ) be the set of all complex irreducible characters of G and let cd ( G ) be the set of all degrees of characters in Irr(G). Let ρ(G) be the set of all primes that divide some degrees in cd(G). The character degree graph Δ(G) of G is the simple undirected graph with vertex set ρ(G) and in which two distinct vertices p and q are adjacent if there exists a character degree r∈cd(G) such that r is divisible by the product pq . In this paper we obtain a necessary condition for the character degree graph Δ(G) of a solvable group G to be eulerian. We also prove that every n – 2 regular graph on n vertices where n is even and n≥4 is the character degree graph of some solvable group. In the last part of the paper we give a bound for the number of Eulerian character degree graphs in terms of number of vertices.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $\text{Irr}(G)$ denote the set of the irreducible complex characters of $G$. An element $g\in G$ is called a vanishing element of $G$ if there exists $\chi\in\text{Irr}(G)$ such that $\chi(g)=0$ (i.e., $g$ is a zero of $\chi$) and, in this case, the conjugacy class $g^G$ of $g$ in $G$ is called a vanishing conjugacy class. In this paper we consider several problems concerning vanishing elements and vanishing conjugacy classes; in particular, we consider the problem of determining the least number of conjugacy classes of a finite group $G$ such that every non-linear $\chi\in\text{Irr}(G)$ vanishes on one of them. We also consider the related problem of determining the minimum number of non-linear irreducible characters of a group such that two of them have a common zero.

Abstract:Let N be a normal subgroup of a finite group G and consider the set cd(G|N) of degrees of irreducible characters of G whose kernels do not contain N. A number of theorems are proved relating the set cd(G|N) to the structure of N. For example, if N is solvable, its derived length is bounded above by a function of |cd(G|N)|. Also, if |cd(G|N)| is at most 2, then N is solvable and its derived length is at most |cd(G|N)|. If G is solvable and |cd(G|N)| = 3, then the derived length of N is at most 3.

In this paper, we show that the set of codegrees of $\Sy_4(4), \U_4(2)$, $\Sy_4(q)\ (q \geq 4)$, $\U_4(3)$, ${}^2\F_4(2)'$, $\J_3$, $\G_2(3)$, $\A_9$, $\J_2$, $\PSL(4,3)$, $\McL$, $\Sy_4(5)$, $\G_2(4)$, $\HS$, $\ON$ and $\M_{24}$ determines the group up to isomorphism.

The 2-character theory for finite 2-groups

Abstract:In this work, we generalize the notion of character for 2-representations of finite 2-groups. The properties of 2-characters bear strong similarities to those classical characters of finite groups, including conjugation invariance, additivity, multiplicativity and orthogonality. With a careful analysis using homotopy fixed points and quotients for categories with 2-group actions, we prove that the category of class functors on a 2-group $\mathcal G$ is equivalent to the Drinfeld center of the 2-group algebra $\mathrm{Vec}_{\mathcal G}$, which categorifies the Fourier transform on finite abelian groups. After transferring the canonical nondegenerate braided monoidal structure from $\mathfrak Z_1(\mathrm{Vec}_{\mathcal G})$, we discover that irreducible 2-characters of $\mathcal G$ coincide with full centers of the corresponding 2-representations, which are in a one-to-one correspondence with Lagrangian algebras in the category of class functors on $\mathcal G$. In particular, the fusion rule of $2\mathrm{Rep}(\mathcal G)$ can be calculated from the pointwise product of Lagrangian algebras as class functors. From a topological quantum field theory (TQFT) point of view, the commutative Frobenius algebra structure on a 2-character is induced from a 2D topological sigma-model with target space $\lvert \mathrm{B} \mathcal G \rvert$.

Abstract:For a finite group $G$, we denote by $c(G)$, the minimal degree of faithful representation of $G$ by quasi-permutation matrices over the complex field $\mathbb{C}$. For an irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined as $\cod(\chi) = |G/ \ker(\chi)|/ \chi(1)$. In this article, we establish equality between $c(G)$ and a $\mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}$-sum of codegrees of some irreducible characters of a non-abelian $p$-group $G$ of odd order. We also study the relation between $c(G)$ and irreducible character codegrees for various classes of non-abelian $p$-groups, such as, $p$-groups with cyclic center, maximal class $p$-groups, GVZ $p$-groups, and others.
