Abstract:Divisibility sequences are defined by the property that their elements divide each other whenever their indices do. The divisibility sequences that also satisfy a linear recurrence, like the Fibonacci numbers, are generated by polynomials that divide their compositions with every positive integer power. We completely characterize such polynomials in terms of their factorizations into cyclotomic polynomials using labeled Hasse diagrams, and construct new integer divisibility sequences based on them. We also show that, unlike the Fibonacci numbers, these non-classical sequences do not have the property of strong divisibility.

Abstract:In this work we extend our study on a link between automaticity and certain algebraic power series over finite fields. Our starting point is a family of sequences in a finite field of characteristic $2$, recently introduced by the first author in connection with algebraic continued fractions. By including it in a large family of recurrent sequences in an arbitrary finite field, we prove its automaticity. Then we give a criterion on automatic sequences, generalizing a previous result and this allows us to present new families of automatic sequences in an arbitrary finite field.

Abstract:Linear second order recursive sequences with arbitrary initial conditions are studied. For sequences with the same parameters a ring and a group is attached, and isomorphisms and homomorphisms are established for related parameters. In the group, called the {\it sequence group}, sequences are identified if they differ by a scalar factor, but not if they differ by a shift, which is the case for the Laxton group. Prime divisors of sequences are studied with the help of the sequence group $\mod p$, which is always cyclic of order $p\pm 1$. Even and odd numbered subsequences are given independent status through the introduction of one rational parameter in place of two integer parameters. This step brings significant simplifications in the algebra. All elements of finite order in Laxton groups and sequence groups are described effectively. A necessary condition is established for a prime $p$ to be a divisor of a sequence: {\it the norm (determinant) of the respective element of the ring must be a quadratic residue $\mod p$}. This leads to an uppers estimate of the set of divisors by a set of prime density $1/2$. Numerical experiments show that the actual density is typically close to $0.35$. A conjecture is formulated that the sets of prime divisors of the even and odd numbered elements are independent for a large family of parameters.

On the Recursive Behaviour of the Number of Irreducible Polynomials with Certain Properties over Finite Fields

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the field with $q$ elements and of characteristic $p$. For $a\in\mathbb{F}_p$ consider the set \begin{equation*} S_a(n)=\{f\in\mathbb{F}_q[x]\mid\operatorname{deg}(f)=n,~f\text{ irreducible, monic and} \operatorname{Tr}(f)=a\}. \end{equation*} In a recent paper, Robert Granger proved for $q=2$ and $n\ge 2$ that $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|= 0$ if $2\nmid n$ and $|S_1(n)|-|S_0(n)|=|S_1(n/2)|$ if $2\mid n$. We will prove a generalization of this result for all finite fields. This is possible due to an observation about the size of certain subsets of monic irreducible polynomials arising in the context of a group action of subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ on monic polynomials. Additionally, it enables us to apply these methods to prove two further results that are very similar in nature.

New Behavior in Legal Decompositions Arising from Non-positive Linear Recurrences

Abstract:Zeckendorf's theorem states every positive integer has a unique decomposition as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. This result has been generalized to many sequences $\{a_n\}$ arising from an integer positive linear recurrence, each of which has a corresponding notion of a legal decomposition. Previous work proved the number of summands in decompositions of $m \in [a_n, a_{n+1})$ becomes normally distributed as $n\to\infty$, and the individual gap measures associated to each $m$ converge to geometric random variables, when the leading coefficient in the recurrence is positive. We explore what happens when this assumption is removed in two special sequences. In one we regain all previous results, including unique decomposition; in the other the number of legal decompositions exponentially grows and the natural choice for the legal decomposition (the greedy algorithm) only works approximately 92.6\% of the time (though a slight modification always works). We find a connection between the two sequences, which explains why the distribution of the number of summands and gaps between summands behave the same in the two examples. In the course of our investigations we found a new perspective on dealing with roots of polynomials associated to the characteristic polynomials. This allows us to remove the need for the detailed technical analysis of their properties which greatly complicated the proofs of many earlier results in the subject, as well as handle new cases beyond the reach of existing techniques.

Abstract:An upper bound is established for certain exponential sums on the rational points of an elliptic curve over a residue class ring $\mathbb{Z}_N$, N=pq for two distinct odd primes p and q. The result is a generalization of an estimate of exponential sums on rational point groups of elliptic curves over finite fields. The bound is applied to showing the pseudorandomness of a large family of binary sequences constructed by using elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Z}_N$.

Abstract:International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we present a generic construction of [math]-ary sequences with period [math] based on the Euler quotient modulo [math], where [math] and [math] are odd primes satisfying that [math] divides [math] and [math] is any prime less than [math]. The minimal polynomial and the linear complexity of the proposed sequences are determined in most cases under the assumption that [math]. The result shows that each of the sequences has large linear complexity.

Abstract:We study the set $\mathcal{L}_{F}$ of all $F$-vector spaces $L(P)$ where $P$ is monic and splits over $F$ and $L(Q)$ denotes the set of linear recurrence sequences over $F$ with characteristic polynomial $Q$. We show that $\mathcal{L}_{F}$ can be endowed with two structures of graded commutative semiring. This study allows us to obtain, in compact forms, the polynomial $P,Q\in F[X]$ such that $L(P)=\prod_{i=1}^{m}L(P_{i})$ and $L(Q)=L(P_{1})\ast\cdots\ast L(P_{m})$, where $P_{1}, \ldots, P_{m}$ are any monic polynomials over $F$.

Abstract:The focus of this paper is to better understand the coexistence of rigidity, weak mixing, and recurrence by constructing thin sets in the product of countably many copies of the finite cyclic group of order q. A Kronecker-type set K is a subset of this group on which every continuous function into the complex unit circle equals the restriction, to K, of a character in the group's Pontryagin dual. Ackelsberg proves that if, for all q > 1, there exists a perfect Kronecker-type set generating a dense subgroup, then there exist large rigidity sequences for weak mixing systems of actions by countable discrete abelian groups. Ackelsberg shows the existence of such sets for prime values of q, while we construct them for all q > 1.

Abstract:We prove that there is a one to one correspondence between the following three sets: idempotent functions on a set of size $n$, complete exceptional sequences of linear radical square zero Nakayama algebras of rank $n$ and rooted labeled forests with $n$ nodes and height of at most one. Therefore, the number of exceptional sequences is given by the sum $\sum\limits^n_{j=1}\binom{n}{j}j^{n-j}$.

Abstract:Let $Q$ be the matrix $\displaystyle \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}$ in $GL_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ where $\mathbb{F}_q$ is a finite field, and let $G$ be the finite cyclic group generated by $Q$. We consider the action of $G$ on the set $\mathbb{F}_q \times \mathbb{F}_q$. In particular, we study certain relationships between the lengths of the non-trivial orbits of $G$, and their frequency of occurrence. This is done in part by investigating the order of elements of a product in an abelian group when the product has prime power order. For $q$ a prime and $b=1$, the orbits correspond to Fibonacci type linear recurrences modulo $q$ for different initial conditions. We also derive certain conditions under which the roots of the characteristic polynomial of $Q$ are generators of $\mathbb{F}_q^\times$. Examples are included to illustrate the theory.

Abstract:Let $\cU$ be the multiplicative group of order~$n$ in the splitting field $\bbF_{q^m}$ of $x^n-1$ over the finite field $\bbF_q$. Any map of the form $x\rightarrow cx^t$ with $c\in \cU$ and $t=q^i$, $0\leq i<m$, is $\bbF_q$-linear on~$\bbF_{q^m}$ and fixes $\cU$ set-wise; maps of this type will be called {\em standard\/}. Occasionally there are other, {\em non-standard\/} $\bbF_q$-linear maps on~$\bbF_{q^m}$ fixing $\cU$ set-wise, and in that case we say that the pair $(n, q)$ is {\em non-standard\/}. We show that an irreducible cyclic code of length~$n$ over $\bbF_q$ has ``extra'' permutation automorphisms (others than the {\em standard\/} permutations generated by the cyclic shift and the Frobenius mapping that every such code has) precisely when the pair $(n, q)$ is non-standard; we refer to such irreducible cyclic codes as {\em non-standard\/} or {\em NSIC-codes\/}. In addition, we relate these concepts to that of a non-standard linear recurring sequence subgroup as investigated in a sequence of papers by Brison and Nogueira. We present several families of NSIC-codes, and two constructions called ``lifting'' and ``extension'' to create new NSIC-codes from existing ones. We show that all NSIC-codes of dimension two can be obtained in this way, thus completing the classification for this case started by Brison and Nogueira.
Uniform Recurrence in the Motzkin Numbers and Related Sequences mod $p$

Abstract:Many famous integer sequences including the Catalan numbers and the Motzkin numbers can be expressed in the form $ConstantTermOf\left[P(x)^nQ(x)\right]$ for Laurent polynomials $Q$, and symmetric Laurent trinomials $P$. In this paper we characterize the primes for which sequences of this form are uniformly recurrent modulo $p$. For all other primes, we show that $0$ has density $1$. This will be accomplished by showing that the study of these sequences mod $p$ can be reduced to the study of the generalized central trinomial coefficients, which are well-behaved mod $p$.
