Abstract:Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is playing an important role in signal processing. This paper proposes a FFT -specific approximate multiplier design to improve the energy efficiency. The approximate multiplier is based on the approximated twiddle factor and compressor to reduce the energy during partial product accumulation. Instead of complex arithmetic operations, the design can achieve reduced power consumption and hardware cost with limited error.

Abstract:Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is a key digital signal processing algorithm that is widely deployed in mobile and portable devices. Recently, with the popularity of human perception related tasks, it is noted that the requirements of full precision and exactness are not always necessary for FFT computation. We propose a top-down approximate Floating-Point FFT design methodology to fully exploit the error-tolerance nature of the FFT algorithm. An efficient error modeling of the configurable approximate multiplier is proposed to link the multiplier approximation to the FFT algorithm precision. Then an approximation optimization flow is formulated to maximize the energy efficiency. Experimental results show that the proposed approximate FFT can achieve up to 52% Area-Delay-Product improvement and 23% energy saving when compared to the exact FFT. The proposed approximate FFT is also found to cover almost 2X wider precision range with higher energy efficiency in comparison with the prior state-of-the-art approximate FFT.

Abstract:A fast algorithm,based on theoretical analysis for optimizing approximate kernel function and radix-2 DIT-FFT structure,is proposed to implement DFT,which improves the dynamic range of FFT by using high order approximation to kernel function without trigonometric operation,and extremely decreases computational complexity through DFT decomposition and butterfly computation found on the DIT-FFT algorithm.Theoretical analysis and experimental results verify its efficiency,and DSP hardware operation validates its rapidity.Those inherent capabilities of the algorithm allow its applications to a wide class of problems with the advantage of computational simplicity.

Abstract:The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is a central tool for image and video coding because it can be related to the Karhunen-Loève transform (KLT), which is the optimal transform in terms of retained transform coefficients and data decorrelation. In this paper, we introduce 16-, 32-, and 64-point low-complexity DCT approximations by minimizing individually the angle between the rows of the exact DCT matrix and the matrix induced by the approximate transforms. According to some classical figures of merit, the proposed transforms outperformed the approximations for the DCT already known in the literature. Fast algorithms were also developed for the low-complexity transforms, asserting a good balance between the performance and its computational cost. Practical applications in image encoding showed the relevance of the transforms in this context. In fact, the experiments showed that the proposed transforms had better results than the known approximations in the literature for the cases of 16, 32, and 64 blocklength.

Abstract:The Arithmetic Fourier Transform (AFT) is a number-theoretic approach to Fourier analysis which has been shown to perform competitively with the classical FFT. In this paper, 2-D AFT algorithm using same method is developed on the basis of I-D AFT algorithm. The analysis of the complexity and the architecture of the 2-D AFT algorithm shows that 2-D AFT can also perform compititivly with the classical 2-D FFT in terms of comlexity and speed. Finaly, a computer simulation shows the correction of this algorithm.
Fast Computation of the Discrete Fourier Transform Square Index Coefficients

Abstract:The $N$-point discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is a cornerstone for several signal processing applications. Many of these applications operate in real-time, making the computational complexity of the DFT a critical performance indicator to be optimized. Unfortunately, whether the $\mathcal{O}(N\log_2 N)$ time complexity of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) can be outperformed remains an unresolved question in the theory of computation. However, in many applications of the DFT -- such as compressive sensing, image processing, and wideband spectral analysis -- only a small fraction of the output signal needs to be computed because the signal is sparse. This motivates the development of algorithms that compute specific DFT coefficients more efficiently than the FFT algorithm. In this article, we show that the number of points of some DFT coefficients can be dramatically reduced by means of elementary mathematical properties. We present an algorithm that compacts the square index coefficients (SICs) of DFT (i.e., $X_{k\sqrt{N}}$, $k=0,1,\cdots, \sqrt{N}-1$, for a square number $N$) from $N$ to $\sqrt{N}$ points at the expense of $N-1$ complex sums and no multiplication. Based on this, any regular DFT algorithm can be straightforwardly applied to compute the SICs with a reduced number of complex multiplications. If $N$ is a power of two, one can combine our algorithm with the FFT to calculate all SICs in $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{N}\log_2\sqrt{N})$ time complexity.

Abstract:The Fourier transform is approximated over a finite domain using a Riemann sum. This Riemann sum is then expressed in terms of the discrete Fourier transform, which allows the sum to be computed with a fast Fourier transform algorithm more rapidly than via a direct matrix multiplication. Advantages and limitations of using this method to approximate the Fourier transform are discussed, and prototypical MATLAB codes implementing the method are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce low-complexity multidimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT) approximations. Three dimensional DCT (3D DCT) approximations are formalized in terms of high-order tensor theory. The formulation is extended to higher dimensions with arbitrary lengths. Several multiplierless $8\times 8\times 8$ approximate methods are proposed and the computational complexity is discussed for the general multidimensional case. The proposed methods complexity cost was assessed, presenting considerably lower arithmetic operations when compared with the exact 3D DCT. The proposed approximations were embedded into 3D DCT-based video coding scheme and a modified quantization step was introduced. The simulation results showed that the approximate 3D DCT coding methods offer almost identical output visual quality when compared with exact 3D DCT scheme. The proposed 3D approximations were also employed as a tool for visual tracking. The approximate 3D DCT-based proposed system performs similarly to the original exact 3D DCT-based method. In general, the suggested methods showed competitive performance at a considerably lower computational cost.

Abstract:Based on the definition of the Fourier transform in terms of the number operator of the quantum harmonic oscillator and in the corresponding definition of the fractional Fourier transform, we have obtained the discrete fractional Fourier transform from the discrete Fourier transform in a completely analogous manner. To achieve this, we have used a very simple method based on the Vandermonde matrices, to obtain rational and irrational powers of the discrete Fourier transform matrices.

Abstract:We discuss the advantages of using the approximate quantum Fourier transform (AQFT) in algorithms which involve periodicity estimations. We analyse quantum networks performing AQFT in the presence of decoherence and show that extensive approximations can be made before the accuracy of AQFT (as compared with regular quantum Fourier transform) is compromised. Abstract:This paper introduces a collection of scaling methods for generating $2N$-point DCT-II approximations based on $N$-point low-complexity transformations. Such scaling is based on the Hou recursive matrix factorization of the exact $2N$-point DCT-II matrix. Encompassing the widely employed Jridi-Alfalou-Meher scaling method, the proposed techniques are shown to produce DCT-II approximations that outperform the transforms resulting from the JAM scaling method according to total error energy and mean squared error. Orthogonality conditions are derived and an extensive error analysis based on statistical simulation demonstrates the good performance of the introduced scaling methods. A hardware implementation is also provided demonstrating the competitiveness of the proposed methods when compared to the JAM scaling method.

Abstract:Single-radix fast Fourier transforms(FFT) require digit-reversion before the in-place computations.For the sake of speed enhancement of conventional digit-reversion algorithms,we bring out four propositions,and propose a novel digit-reversion algorithm for single-radix FFT based on a look-up table.By accessing a look-up table,the algorithm reduces the number of cycles,simplifies the process computing the inverse value and enhances the speed.The table size is independent of the number of FFT points.Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is significantly better than the others when the radix is 2 and the compution time is only 20% that of the conventional algorithm and at more 15% more than that of the existing algorithm based on look-up tables when the radix is greater than 2.

Abstract:In order to compute the Fourier transform of a function $f$ on the real line numerically, one samples $f$ on a grid and then takes the discrete Fourier transform. We derive exact error estimates for this procedure in terms of the decay and smoothness of $f$. The analysis provides a new recipe of how to relate the number of samples, the sampling interval, and the grid size.

Abstract:By combining the thin QR decomposition and the subsampled randomized Fourier transform (SRFT), we obtain an efficient randomized algorithm for computing the approximate Tucker decomposition with a given target multilinear rank. We also combine this randomized algorithm with the power iteration technique to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. By using the results about the singular values of the product of orthonormal matrices with the Kronecker product of SRFT matrices, we obtain the error bounds of these two algorithms. Finally, the efficiency of these algorithms is illustrated by several numerical examples.

Abstract:Nonuniform Fourier Transform (FT) has a variety of applications such as medical imaging, radio astronomy and the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Over the last few years, several algorithms have been developed for computing the nonuniform FT based on interpolating an oversampled fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In this paper, we present a different approach, in which an approximation method to the complex exponentials via Legendre polynomials is combined with FFT to compute the nonuniform FT. Simulation results show that the proposed method has a good performance over the others.

Abstract:In this paper, a high accuracy and low-complexity fixed-point inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) based on AAN's fast algorithm is proposed for the approximation of the real IDCT. The proposed transform can be implemented with 16-bit multiplication and 24-bit addition operations. A common factor extraction algorithm is used to obtain a new set of real factors of IDCT whose integer approximations can be implemented with few arithmetic operations. A two-stage scale approach is proposed for constraining the dynamic range to a narrow range in scale part. The experimental results show that the proposed transform has significantly higher accuracy than the thresholds of IEEE1180-1190. The results of the proposed IDCT implemented into the decoder of MPEG-2 also show that the fixed-point IDCT achieves higher performance.
