Abstract:A low cost design for elementary function approximation based on piecewise quadratic interpolation to support singleprecision floating-point data,that can be able to complete the approximation to the reciprocal,squarer root,squarer root reciprocal,exponential,trigonometric and other elementary functions is presented.The traditional computation of quadratic polynomial needs one squarer,two multiplications and three additions.But this design only needs two Multiply And Accumulate(MAC) operations by the deformation of quadratic polynomial,and can complete the computation by reusing the MAC architecture.In the result,the design can reduce 56% of the computing area and save 17.5% cost of hardware in total,though the entire approximation operation takes two clock cycles to complete.

Abstract:Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is a key digital signal processing algorithm that is widely deployed in mobile and portable devices. Recently, with the popularity of human perception related tasks, it is noted that the requirements of full precision and exactness are not always necessary for FFT computation. We propose a top-down approximate Floating-Point FFT design methodology to fully exploit the error-tolerance nature of the FFT algorithm. An efficient error modeling of the configurable approximate multiplier is proposed to link the multiplier approximation to the FFT algorithm precision. Then an approximation optimization flow is formulated to maximize the energy efficiency. Experimental results show that the proposed approximate FFT can achieve up to 52% Area-Delay-Product improvement and 23% energy saving when compared to the exact FFT. The proposed approximate FFT is also found to cover almost 2X wider precision range with higher energy efficiency in comparison with the prior state-of-the-art approximate FFT.

Abstract:Approximate computing is a promising alternative to improve energy efficiency for IoT devices on the edge. This work proposes an optimally approximated and unbiased floating-point approximate multiplier with runtime configurability. We provide a theoretically sound formulation that turns multiplication approximation to an optimization problem. With the formulation and findings, a multilevel architecture is proposed to easily incorporate runtime configurability and module execution parallelism. Finally, an optimization scheme is applied to improve the area, making it linearly dependent on the precision, instead of quadratically or exponentially as in prior work. In addition to the optimal approximation and configurability, the proposed design has an efficient circuit implementation that uses inversion, shift and addition instead of complex arithmetic operations. When compared to the prior state-of-the-art approximate floating-point multiplier, ApproxLP [30], the proposed design outperforms in all aspects including accuracy, area, and delay. By replacing the regular full-precision multiplier in GPU, the proposed design can improve the energy efficiency for various edge computing tasks. Even with Level 1 approximation, the proposed design improves energy efficiency up to 122× for machine learning on CIFAR-10, with almost negligible accuracy loss.

Abstract:The reciprocal function, 1/x, is important for many real-time algorithms. It is used in a large variety of algorithms from areas ranging from iterative estimation to machine learning. Many of these algorithms are iterative in nature and require the online computation of the reciprocal. Such an iterative structure often prevents effective use of pipelining for implementation of the reciprocal. For this reason, a reciprocal algorithm requiring only a low amount of clock cycles is desired. Many real-time algorithms, often being of approximate nature, can tolerate the use of only an approximate solution of the reciprocal. For this reason, we present a low complexity non-iterative approximation of the reciprocal function. This approximation can be calculated using only combinatorial logic. We present synthesis results showing that the proposed approach can be implemented with low area requirements at high clock frequencies. We analytically describe the error of the approximation and show that by optimizing a constant value used in the approximation, different variants with different error behaviors can be obtained. We furthermore present performance results of application examples that, when using our proposed method, show only negligible performance degradation compared to when using the exact reciprocal function, demonstrating the versatility of our proposed approach.

Abstract:Floating-point arithmetic performance determines the overall performance of important applications, from graphics to AI. Meeting the IEEE-754 specification for floating-point requires that final results of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square root are correctly rounded based on the user-selected rounding mode. A frustrating fact for implementers is that naive rounding methods will not produce correctly rounded results even when intermediate results with greater accuracy and precision are available. In contrast, our novel algorithm can correct approximations of reciprocal, division and square root, even ones with slightly lower than target precision. In this paper, we present a family of algorithms that can both increase the accuracy (and potentially the precision) of an estimate and correctly round it according to all binary IEEE-754 rounding modes. We explain how it may be efficiently implemented in hardware, and for completeness, we present proofs that it is not necessary to include equality tests associated with round-to-nearest-even mode for reciprocal, division and square root functions, because it is impossible for input(s) in a given precision to have exact answers exactly midway between representable floating-point numbers in that precision. In fact, our simpler proofs are sometimes stronger.

Abstract:Transcendental functions are commonly used in many fields such as nonlinear functions of artificial neural networks (ANNs). Due to nonlinearity of these functions, hardware implementation of the functions faces many challenges. Some methods cannot control the approximation accuracy beforehand, or they cannot approximate target functions accurately and efficiently. Other methods can only approximate a particular function without generality. A universal piecewise linear (PWL) approximation method is proposed to solve the problems existing in the above methods. In this paper, a general piecewise linear (PWL) approximation method with controllable maximum absolute error for transcend-ental functions is proposed. The method has the self-adaptive capability to choose the smallest number of segments under the constraint of a controllable maximum absolute error. Therefore, it requires fewer segments and incurs less hardware overhead. Moreover, it can approximate any transcendental functions and does not rely on any properties of the target function. Comparing our work with other methods used in three transcendental functions, including the sigmoid, hyperbolic tangent, and logarithmic function, our method improves the approximation accuracy by 4.5 times, 2.1 times, and 1.3 times, respectively; in addition, our method is more efficient and it reduces the circuit area by 49.9, 22.4, and 28.5, respectively.

Abstract:We describe a computing method of the computable (or constructive) real numbers based on analysis of expressions. This method take precision estimate into account in order to get a better algorithm than Menissier-Morain's method, which is also based on the representation of constructive reals. We solve two problems which appear in exact real arithmetic based on the representation of constructive reals. First, by balancing every item's precision in the expression, we can avoid unnecessary precision growth. Second, by distributing different weights to different operations, we can make sure that complex operations do not waste much time when to compute the whole expression. In these ways, we finally get a more efficient and proper method than prior implementations.
On approximation to a real number by algebraic numbers of bounded degree

Abstract:In his seminal 1961 paper, Wirsing studied how well a given transcendental real number $\xi$ can be approximated by algebraic numbers $\alpha$ of degree at most $n$ for a given positive integer $n$, in terms of the so-called naive height $H(\alpha)$ of $\alpha$. He showed that the infimum $\omega^*_n(\xi)$ of all $\omega$ for which infinitely many such $\alpha$ have $|\xi-\alpha| \le H(\alpha)^{-\omega-1}$ is at least $(n+1)/2$. He also asked if we could even have $\omega^*_n(\xi) \ge n$ as it is generally expected. Since then, all improvements on Wirsing's lower bound were of the form $n/2+\mathcal{O}(1)$ until Badziahin and Schleischitz showed in 2021 that $\omega^*_n(\xi) \ge an$ for each $n\ge 4$, with $a=1/\sqrt{3}\simeq 0.577$. In this paper, we use a different approach partly inspired by parametric geometry of numbers and show that $\omega^*_n(\xi) \ge an$ for each $n\ge 2$, with $a=1/(2-\log 2)\simeq 0.765$.

Effective Quadratic Error Bounds for Floating-Point Algorithms Computing the Hypotenuse Function

Abstract:We provide tools to help automate the error analysis of algorithms that evaluate simple functions over the floating-point numbers. The aim is to obtain tight relative error bounds for these algorithms, expressed as a function of the unit round-off. Due to the discrete nature of the set of floating-point numbers, the largest errors are often intrinsically "arithmetic" in the sense that their appearance may depend on specific bit patterns in the binary representations of intermediate variables, which may be present only for some precisions. We focus on generic (i.e., parameterized by the precision) and analytic over-estimations that still capture the correlations between the errors made at each step of the algorithms. Using methods from computer algebra, which we adapt to the particular structure of the polynomial systems that encode the errors, we obtain bounds with a linear term in the unit round-off that is sharp in manycases. An explicit quadratic bound is given, rather than the $O()$-estimate that is more common in this area. This is particularly important when using low precision formats, which are increasingly common in modern processors. Using this approach, we compare five algorithms for computing the hypotenuse function, ranging from elementary to quite challenging.

Abstract:We present a rational approximation for rapid and accurate computation of the Voigt function, obtained by residue calculus. The computational test reveals that with only $16$ summation terms this approximation provides average accuracy ${10^{- 14}}$ over a wide domain of practical interest $0 < x < 40,000$ and ${10^{- 4}} < y < {10^2}$ for applications using the HITRAN molecular spectroscopic database. The proposed rational approximation takes less than half the computation time of that required by Weideman's rational approximation. Algorithmic stability is achieved due to absence of the poles at $y \geqslant 0$ and $ - \infty < x < \infty $.

Abstract:Modern floating-point multipliers perform rounding in compliance with the IEEE 754 standard. Since rounding is on the critical path, high-speed rounding algorithms are used to increase the performance for floating-point multiplication. To achieve high performance with minimum increase in hardware, existing rounding algorithms generate two consecutive values in parallel, and compute the rounded product using these values. This paper presents a novel IEEE rounding algorithm which generates two nonconsecutive values in parallel to compute the rounded product. Synthesis results for double precision operands show that the proposed algorithm has approximately 24–41% less delay than previous high-speed rounding algorithms presented elsewhere. The verification of the new algorithm is also presented in a simple and straightforward manner.

Abstract:This paper proposes a low-complexity method and architecture to compute the logarithm of complex numbers based on coordinate rotation digital computer (CORDIC). Our method takes advantage of the vector mode of circular CORDIC and hyperbolic CORDIC, which only needs shift-add operations in its hardware implementation. Our architecture has lower design complexity and higher performance compared with conventional architectures. Through software simulation, we show that this method can achieve high precision for logarithm computation, reaching the relative error of 10(-7). Finally, we design and implement an example circuit under TSMC 28nm CMOS technology. According to the synthesis report, our architecture has smaller area, lower power consumption, higher precision and wider operation range compared with the alternative architectures.

Abstract:In this article, we show new effective approximation measures for the shifted logarithm of algebraic numbers which belong to a number field of arbitrary degree. Our measures refine previous ones including those for usual logarithms. We adapt Pade approximants constructed by M. Kawashima and A. Poels in the rational case. Our key ingredient relies on the Poincare-Perron theorem which gives us asymptotic estimates at every archimedean place of the number field, that we apply to decide whether the shifted logarithm lies outside of the number field. We use Perron's second theorem and its modification due to M. Pituk to handle general cases.

Abstract:Debugging accumulation of floating-point errors is hard; ideally, computer should track it automatically. Here we consider twofold approximation of an exact real with value + error pair of floating-point numbers. Normally, value + error sum is more accurate than value alone, so error can estimate deviation between value and its exact target. Fast summation algorithm, that provides twofold sum of x[1]+...+x[N] or dot product x[1]*y[1]+...+x[N]*y[N], can be same fast as direct summation sometimes if leveraging processor underused potential. This way, we can hit three goals: improve precision, track inaccuracy, and do this with little if any loss in performance.

Abstract:We propose a general methodology and reconfigurable architecture for computing AB-like functions in the complex field. CORDIC and the parabolic synthesis approximation method help the proposed method to be flexible to adjust the precision and complexity of computation. The proposed architecture is reconfigurable to adapt to different functions. The MATLAB test results show that our calculation method’s average relative error is the order of 6×10-5. The synthesis report under TSMC 28nm CMOS technology shows that the proposed design has an area consumption of 7149.86μm2 at the frequency of 1 GHz and the power consumption is 2.0935 mW.
Unitary rational best approximations to the exponential function

Abstract:Rational best approximations (in a Chebyshev sense) to real functions are characterized by an equioscillating approximation error. Similar results do not hold true for rational best approximations to complex functions in general. In the present work, we consider unitary rational approximations to the exponential function on the imaginary axis, which map the imaginary axis to the unit circle. In the class of unitary rational functions, best approximations are shown to exist, to be uniquely characterized by equioscillation of a phase error, and to possess a super-linear convergence rate. Furthermore, the best approximations have full degree (i.e., non-degenerate), achieve their maximum approximation error at points of equioscillation, and interpolate at intermediate points. Asymptotic properties of poles, interpolation nodes, and equioscillation points of these approximants are studied. Three algorithms, which are found very effective to compute unitary rational approximations including candidates for best approximations, are sketched briefly. Some consequences to numerical time-integration are discussed. In particular, time propagators based on unitary best approximants are unitary, symmetric and A-stable.
