Abstract:In [5] and [19], the authors gave anomaly cancellation formulas for the gauge groups E8,E8*E8. In this paper, we mainly deal with the case of gauge group E8*E8*E8. Using the E8*E8*E8 bundle, we construct some modular forms over SL2(Z). By these modular forms, we get some new anomaly cancellation formulas of characteristic forms.

Abstract:In this paper we show that both of the Green-Schwarz anomaly factorization formula for the gauge group E 8 × E 8 and the Hořava-Witten anomaly factorization formula for the gauge group E8 can be derived through modular forms of weight 14. This answers a question of Schwarz. We also establish generalizations of these factorization formulas and obtain a new Hořava-Witten type factorization formula.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the elliptic genus in [10] by the gauge group E_8 and the gauge group E_8*E_8. Then we prove that the generalized elliptic genus are the weak Jacobi forms. Using these elliptic genus, we obtain some SL_2(Z) modular forms and get some new anomaly cancellation formulas of characteristic forms for almost complex manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, by combining modular forms and characteristic forms, we obtain general anomaly cancellation formulas of any dimension. For $4k+2$ dimensional manifolds, our results include the gravitational anomaly cancellation formulas of Alvarez-Gaum\'e and Witten in dimensions 2, 6 and 10 (\cite{AW}) as special cases. In dimension $4k+1$, we derive anomaly cancellation formulas for index gerbes. In dimension $4k+3$, we obtain certain results about eta invariants, which are interesting in spectral geometry.

Abstract:Recently Freed and Hopkins [11] proved that there is no parity anomaly in M-theory on pin(+) manifolds in the low-energy field theory approximation, and they also developed an algebraic theory of cubic forms. Earlier Witten [33] proved the anomaly cancellation for spin manifolds by introducing the E-8-bundle technique. Motivated by the cubic forms and the anomaly cancellation formulas of Witten-Freed-Hopkins, we give some new cubic forms on spin, spinc(e), spin(omega 2) and orientable 12-manifolds respectively. We relate them to eta-invariants when the manifolds are with boundary, and mod 2 indices on 10 dimensional characteristic submanifolds when the manifolds are spinc or spin(omega 2). Our method of producing these cubic forms is a combination of (generalized) Witten classes and the character of the basic representation of affine E-8. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we define a generalized elliptic genus of an almost complex manifold with an extra complex bundle which generalize the elliptic genus in [10]. This generalized elliptic genus is a generalized Jacobi form. By this generalized Jacobi form, we can get some SL(2,Z) modular forms. By these SL(2,Z) modular forms, we get some interesting anomaly cancellation formulas for an almost complex manifold . As corollaries, we get some divisibility results of the holomorphic Euler characteristic number.

Abstract:We propose a novel modular anomaly equation for the unflavored Schur index in the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills theory. The vanishing conditions overdetermine the modular ambiguity ansatz from the equation, thus together they are sufficient to recursively compute the exact Schur indices for all SU(N) gauge groups. Using the representations as MacMahon’s generalized sum-of-divisors functions and Jacobi forms, we then prove our proposal as well as elucidate a general formula conjectured by Pan and Peelaers.
Cancelling mod-2 anomalies by Green-Schwarz mechanism with $B_{μν}$

Abstract:We study if and when mod-2 anomalies can be canceled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism with the introduction of an antisymmetric tensor field $B_{\mu\nu}$. As explicit examples, we examine $SU(2)$ and more general $Sp(n)$ gauge theories in four and eight dimensions. We find that the mod-2 anomalies of 8d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $Sp(n)$ gauge theory can be canceled, as expected from it having a string theory realization, while the mod-2 Witten anomaly of 4d $SU(2)$ and $Sp(n)$ gauge theory cannot be canceled in this manner.

Abstract:By some SL(2, Z) modular forms introduced in [4] and [10], we construct some modular forms over SL2(Z) and some modular forms over {\Gamma}^0(2) and {\Gamma}_0(2) in odd dimensions. In parallel, we obtain some new cancellation formulas for odd dimensional spin manifolds and odd dimensional spin^c manifolds respectively. As corollaries, we get some divisibility results of index of the Toeplitz operators on spin manifolds and spin^c manifolds .

Abstract:Generating functions of BPS indices, counting states of D4-D2-D0 black holes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIA string theory and identified with rank 0 Donaldson- Thomas invariants, are examples of mock modular forms. They have a quite complicated modular anomaly expressed as a sum over three different types of trees weighted by generalized error functions and their derivatives. We show that this anomaly can be significantly simplified, which in turn simplfies finding the corresponding mock modular generating functions.

Abstract:The structure of the moduli space of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories is analyzed from an algebraic geometric viewpoint. The connection between the fundamental fields of the ultraviolet theory, and the gauge invariant composite fields of the infrared theory is explained in detail. The results are then used to prove an anomaly matching theorem. The theorem is used to study anomaly matching for supersymmetric QCD, and can explain all the known anomaly matching results for this case.

Abstract:The classification of topological phases of matter in the presence of interactions is an area of intense interest. One possible means of classification is via studying the partition function under modular transforms, as the presence of an anomalous phase arising in the edge theory of a D-dimensional system under modular transformation, or modular anomaly, signals the presence of a (D+1)-D non-trivial bulk. In this work, we discuss the modular transformations of conformal field theories along a (2+1)-D and a (3+1)-D edge. Using both analytical and numerical methods, we show that chiral complex free fermions in (2+1)-D and (3+1)-D are modular invariant. However, we show in (3+1)-D that when the edge theory is coupled to a background U(1) gauge field this results in the presence of a modular anomaly that is the manifestation of a quantum Hall effect in a (4+1)-D bulk. Using the modular anomaly, we find that the edge theory of (4+1)-D insulator with spacetime inversion symmetry(P*T) and fermion number parity symmetry for each spin becomes modular invariant when 8 copies of the edges exist.
